Chapter 3
Every evening was more or less the same routine, sans the sex. They would eat in silence and then Severus would have to sit in the stomp that was the ottoman, idle, while Harry read the paper and his mail. Then Harry would get up and go to his room leaving Severus seated on the stomp. Apparently Potter grew tired of seeing him just sit there and a week later showed up with knitting needles and yarn. He tossed it to Severus and told him he was to knit a blanket for his baby. Severus looked at him befuddled. He did not have a remote idea of how to knit. He never even saw his mother knit. He looked at the yarn that was already wrapped in a ball with no directions attached to it. Potter was not budging, his gaze not leaving the Potions Master.
“Mr. Potter, I am sorry to inform you that I do not know how to knit.”
“You are a smart bastard. I am sure you can figure it out.”
Severus took a deep breath and closed his eyes. When he felt he could speak without showing his emotions he said, “If you could, please, provide me with some directions…”
“And why would I do that?”
But Severus had no answer to that question so kept his silence.
“You will figure it out, and as an incentive, you will receive ten with the ruler in each hand every night that passes and you have not made progress.”
Severus valued his hands and was determined to keep them safe, but try as he may he could not keep the tread on the needles. Harry was oblivious to his plight. He simply read his paper and mail without paying any attention to Snape but when he got up to leave he turned and looked at Severus.
“Let’s see then.”
Severus’ needles were empty.
“No progress, Accio ruler,” and from the library came a wooden ruler that landed on Harry’s outstretched hand.
Severus did not wait for the order and bowing his head he extended out his hands.

The routine was interrupted the following night when the floo flared up revealing Kingsley’s face. Permission was granted and Kingsley came through with Draco by his side.
“Kingsley.”
“Harry,” was the salutations offered.
Draco went to approach his former head of house but Harry cut him off by standing in front of Snape. Kingsley called Draco; who immediately went to stand by his guide.
“How can I help you?” asked Harry not offering his guest a seat.
“I was hoping we could talk about our roles as guides. I do not know if you are aware but there are marked ones that are being mistreated…”
“Kingsley, I hope you are not here to gain sympathy for the marked ones. I could care less what happens to them.”
“Harry, some are being starved.”
Severus could feel Harry tensing up; Shacklebolt had obviously struck a chord.
“Why come to me? Shouldn’t you be going to the ministry?”
Kingsley snorted, “The Ministry, when have you known the Ministry to do its job? Harry some of your classmates are being tortured as we speak.”
“Slytherins.”
“Does that make it right? Does it Harry?”
“Look I have my own set of problems…”
Harry was interrupted by Kreacher bringing in a tray with tea. Harry had no other choice but to ask his guest to sit. Draco sat by Kingsley’s feet on the floor. Harry felt the urge to ask Snape to sit by his feet and show the same level of submission as Malfoy was displaying but there was no need for it because Severus followed suit and sat by his feet.
Kingsley took the offered cup and thanked the elf. Then he looked at Harry and continued his line of thought, “Harry, will you be denying Severus food or a clean bed to sleep in?”
Harry was upset that he was being cornered in his own home.
“I will never deny anyone food,” he said not really looking at his boss.
“But if you don’t help those that are defenseless then aren’t you in fact denying them nourishment?”
“Look, Kingsley, there is really nothing I can do. You know that as an Auror I have vowed to protect the Ministry,” he said thinking that he had surely put an end to the situation.
But Kingsley looked at him and smiled, “Yes, and I wonder what would have been the outcome of the war if Alastor, Tonks, the Longbottoms and I would have taken that stand and turned our backs on the Order?”
Harry looked at him but had no reply.
“Then to the second matter that brings me here, Severus Snape.”
“Snape is totally my responsibility and no one else is to get involved.”
“Harry, I feel the need to warn you. There are those in the ministry that are not turning their backs on the Marked Ones. They have asked some of us Aurors to patrol the homes of the Guided Ones that are suspected of abuse. Now my question to you my friend is; do I need to place an Auror in front of your residences?”
Harry looked into Kingsley’s eyes. He did not know what to make of all this. Was he trying to get him to join some kind of secret organization? But who were they protecting; Death Eaters? That could not be; could it?
“I am sorry, Kingsley, but it seems to me that you are trying to recruit Aurors in the defense of Death Eaters,” prodded Harry.
“No, Mr. Potter, to the best of my knowledge, all the Death Eaters are in Azkaban,” answered Kingsley.
Harry grabbed a fist full of Snape’s hair and raised his face up to Kingsley, “What do you call this?”
In a heartbeat, Kingsley was standing with his wand pointed at Harry.
“What exactly are you going to do with that wand Kings? Are you going to kill the savior of the Wizarding world in order to defend this sorry excuse for a wizard?”
“LET GO OF H I M,” roared the man towering over Potter.
“Snape, do you think that Kingsley should risk going to Azkaban to defend your sorry arse?” still holding on to Severus’ hair.
Severus took a deep breath, “Please, Mr. Shacklebolt, please put your wand away,” pleaded the wizard from the floor.
Draco looked up in disbelief into his Guide’s eyes. They both were shock to see that a wizard like Severus Snape had submitted so fast and so willingly. But Kingsley was not about to allow it.
“Potterrr!” warned Kingsley.
“Mr. Shacklebolt, please, I assure you I am in no pain. Please, do not complicate this more than need be. Please,” Severus begged from the floor with his neck stretched to alleviate the pull on his hair.
“I will not stand here and see you abuse your power over a man that has no way to defend himself,” said the dark man through gritted teeth.
Harry decided that he had no desire to upset Kingsley and let go of Snape’s hair. Kingsley looked at Harry and put away his wand expelling a puff of breath.
“Thank you, Mr. Potter,” he said extending his hand to Draco to help him up from the floor. “We are leaving,” he informed Draco and then knelt next to Severus.
“I know that there is little I can do to help you Severus Snape, but do be assured that I will do everything and anything I can to help you; my friend,” he said cupping Severus hands in his and smiling tenderly.
“Mr. Shacklebolt, I assure you I am in no need of being rescued. I have committed crimes; crimes that must be paid for,” said Severus with the conviction of man that believes every word he utter.
Kingsley was about to enter the floo when he stopped and squared his shoulders and rose to his full height. He turned to Harry, “Can I ask a favor of you?”
Harry simply shook his head in consent.
“I promised Draco that he would see his professor and speak to him. I know I had no right, but I have never broken my promise. Can you please give them five minutes alone?” he said in a voice so humble it was hard to believe the words were coming from the tall muscular man.
Again, Harry simply nodded his assent.
“Can you show me that famous computer of yours? This way they can have some time alone.”
Harry took out his wand and whipped it in the air. An hourglass appeared out of thin air and turned starting the sand on its course.
“Snape, when the five minutes are up you are to leave the room. Is that understood?”
Severus nodded and Harry and Kingsley were on their way to the library door. No sooner were they out of earshot, Draco approached his professor.
“Professor, how are you?”
“Mr. Malfoy, I…”
“Draco, please,” corrected the former student.
“Mr. Potter wants me to address everyone in a formal matter.”
“Who gives a rat’s arse?”
But when he saw his former professor bow his head he understood that the professor did care.
“I am sorry, Sir.”
There was an awkward silence when Draco realized that he was wasting valuable time.
“Does he really feed you?”
“Yes, as much as I can eat and Kreacher, the house elf, has provided me with a comfortable resting place.”
“So that means you sleep on the floor.”
Severus looked at him with curiosity.
“You would have said a comfortable bed- not ‘resting place,’” cleared the blond.
“It is comfortable, never the less.”
“Is there anything I can get or do for you?”
Severus looked at the knitting utensils that lay on the floor.
“Not unless you know how to knit,” said the Potions Master trying to make light of the situation.
“No, but believe me, Kingsley has ways of helping us. I will tell him and he will find a way to help you.”
“Mr. Malfoy, I was jesting. You must keep him away from here. We would not want things to get ugly between him and Mr. Potter.”
“Don’t worry Professor; Kingsley knows what he is doing. He is a wicked one; that one. Your Guide didn’t have a chance in hell.”
Severus was pleased to see Draco so well. He was obviously being treated with kindness.
“Are you with… child?” asked Severus with red cheeks.
“Yes, Kingsley could not wiggle his way out of that one, but for what I have heard he tried his best to make it as painless as possible for me. Professor, you have no idea how scared I was, but Kings made the guards leave the room and he soothed me as best as possible. Mind you, I was a wreck. I was so scared. I kept on thinking he would kill me if he penetrated me and yes it was painful.” Here Draco paused as if reliving the mentioned event. “To this day, he tries to make it up to me. He is doing a good job. Professor, no one has ever treated me like he does. He really cares about my feeling... I think… I believe… I am in love with him.”
“Merlin has been kind enough to let me see at least one of my students in good care...”
The last speck of sand fell and Severus was moving towards the kitchen door.
“Take care, Draco, may Merlin guide your path,” Severus said as he vanished through the door.
***
“Snape!”
Severus took a deep breath. He guessed that Draco and Kingsley had left and it was now time to pay the piper. He stood up from the chair next to the fireplace and walked through the door to the sitting area. He found the young Gryffindor staring into the fireplace. When he turned he had the knitting needles and yarn in hand.
“No progress; yet again,” and lifting his wand, “accio ruler.”
Severus stood before the Gryffindor and held his hands out.
“Aren’t you forgetting something?”
Severus took a deep breath and went down on his knees. The now customary ten whacks were given.
“Go upstairs,” he barely whispered.
Severus shut his eyes in dismay. He could easily take double the beating but what awaited him upstairs was something he truly dreaded. But alas, this was his punishment and he had promised himself that he would endure it. If Merlin himself had denied him the right to die he would need to find peace. These were the thoughts that accompanied him on his way up to the chamber of punishment.
A/N I know it is short but last chapter was very long. I was going to divide that one but it would have been a strange cut in the story line.
Thanks to all those who reviewed.
Wow! Deserving made the top ten most review in the past 7 days. That only took two chapters. Esclavitud took eleven before it made the list. Thanks.
