“Underneath His Skin”
Chapter 3
Note: I believe from here on out, the point-of-views will change between Harry and Draco.
----^^----^^----^^----^^----
Everything seemed to be in slow motion; Hermione screamed out Harry’s name and ran to his side, while Ron was speechless as he looked around himself. The crowd was horrified at what had just happened, and they were anxiously looking at the two lifeless bodies. Ron cursed out loud and ran to Harry. When he and Hermione rolled Harry over, he wasn’t breathing or reacting to Hermione and Ron’s shouts. Ginny fell to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably out of fear and sadness.
Pansy was in tears; she rolled Draco over and saw that he wasn’t breathing. She screamed out his name once more, before falling onto his chest. Blaise tugged at Draco’s shirt collar, desperately trying to wake him up. The crowd finally realized that they have witnessed two young wizards die before their very eyes. Some were crying over the apparent loss, while others were in pure shock. Hermione tugged at Harry one last time, before burying herself into Ron’s chest. Ron was still in shock as he took Hermione into his arms. He couldn’t believe that Harry was dead; his best friend was dead. He continued to look at the lifeless body, frantically thinking of a way to try and bring him back. However, he knew full well that you couldn’t bring the dead back. Ginny finally reached Harry’s side and tried her hardest to not cry as much, but her attempt failed and she fell onto Harry’s chest, crying as hard as before, and clinging onto his school robes.
Then, a familiar voice came from the crowd. Ron looked up and saw Luna approach the scene. He expected her to be crying or in shock, however, she appeared to be distracted by something in the air. Ron looked up too, but saw nothing but the stone ceiling. He looked back at her, and she continued to trail the invisible object with her curious eyes down from the ceiling, and straight to Harry’s body. That’s when Luna walked over to Ginny and reached for her trembling shoulders. She tried to lift Ginny up, but the sobbing girl tightened her grip onto Harry’s robes, not wanting to leave him.
“It’s okay, Ginny,” Luna’s soothing voice seemed to calm everyone in the corridor.
Ginny slowly lifted her head up, and saw that Luna was smiling.
“C’mon, get up,”
Ginny was hesitant, but she slowly lifted herself off of Harry. The crowd grew curious with Luna’s actions, so they quieted down and waited. Hermione and Ginny kept their eyes on Harry, while Ron glanced back at Luna, who’s gaze was following another invisible object from the ceiling to Draco’s body. The crowd kept switching their attention from Harry to Draco, not sure of what to expect. Ron was starting to get frustrated, but then he thought about the photo album from last night and remembered that Luna could see spirits. He felt hesitant to ask her, but he knew that it was important,
“Luna,”
She turned to him.
“Did… did you see them. Their… spirits?”
The young girl tilted her head to the side before answering.
“Their spirits looked like bright lights. I couldn’t see any facial features or anything like that, but they seemed to be in a hurry to get back; like there was something they didn’t want to leave behind. That usually happens, but I’ve never seen one return back to its body. Looks like Harry isn’t ready to leave just yet,”
Ron and Hermione looked at each other, and then down at Harry. Ginny’s sorrowful tears slowly turned into tears of joy as she waited for Harry to wake up. Blaise and Pansy overheard this, and so they sat back and waited for Draco to wake up as well. Crabbe and Golye both kneeled down on the other side of their leader, and anxiously searched for any sign of life in the Slyherin blonde. The whole corridor seemed to have quieted down as they all eyed the fallen wizards…
----*^*^*----
Ow, that hurt… big time.
Harry gasped, taking in a long, deep breath. He heard the distant voices again, but this time, they sounded exhilarated. He slowly rolled over onto his knees and elbows, attempting to pick himself up, but then he felt two people grab him by his arms to help him stand up
----*^*^*----
Draco gasped for air, coughing at the immediate pain that had surged from his chest to his whole body. He heard distant cheers and some close range voices from his side. He quickly rolled over onto his elbows and knees, taking in deep breaths before attempting to stand. He felt two people run to each side of him,as they lifted him up onto his stiff legs.
----*^*^*----
The crowd continued to cheer loudly at the revived boys, but all Harry could hear at the moment were some ringing in his ears. His vision was a bit blurry, but he managed to stand on his own. He turned around and saw the distant figure standing up too. He rubbed his face with his hands, and then realized something.
“Where’s my glasses?” He asked.
His vision slowly sharpened and he saw the pug-faced Pansy standing beside him, looking confused.
“Gl-glasses?”
Harry shuddered. He saw that Blaise, Crabbe and Goyle were closely accompanying him, and so he darted his attention back to the figure across his way, and saw Ron, Ginny and Hermione smiling happily at the brunette next to them.
“Wait…” Harry slowly walked toward the group, confused about why they left him with Draco’s friends.
However, he stopped short as he watched the brunette slowly turn around…
-----*^*^*-----
Draco’s vision was blurry. He rubbed his hand against his face for a second, and then a certain redhead handed him a pair of spectacles.
“Here you go, mate!”
Draco scorned at the familiar voice, which sounded just like Ronald Weasley. He grunted, and instinctively put the glasses on. After being able to see again, he slowly turned around to face his attacker. He was expecting Ron or Harry Potter to be standing before him… however; he didn’t see any of them. Instead, he saw himself – the reflective image of his evenly parted, blonde hair, his piercing silver eyes, his light skinned face… Draco gasped and stepped back, feeling like he was going to faint…
----*^*^*----
Harry gasped. The brunette wasn’t a stranger… it was HIM. Harry was staring at himself, speechless, and even more confused. He saw his body step back, obviously it had the same frightened reaction as he did. Harry stared intently at his own green eyes that were behind his initial spectacles, and then as his dark hair, and then at his own face. Feeling very light-headed at the sight of himself, he closed his eyes and shook his head, hoping that he was just seeing things.
“Harry?”
Harry quickly looked up at Hermione, who was looking directly at the brunette… at what was supposed to be him.
“Harry, you okay?” She asked.
Harry watched as the brunette quickly glanced at her, realizing that she was talking to him.
“Harry?! I’m not bloody Harry, are you blind!?”
Harry’s stomach felt like it had dropped straight to the floor.
If he’s not Harry… er, if he’s not me, then…
“Draco!” Harry heard Pansy call out.
“What?!” The brunette shouted back to her.
Harry thought he was going to faint again as he staggered backwards, only to be caught by Pansy.
“Draco, are you okay, what’s wrong?!” She frantically asked.
“He’s not Draco, I’M DRACO!” The brunette called out.
Everyone in the room went silent again. Ron’s eyes went wide as he frantically switched between the two rivals, not sure on what to believe at the moment. Hermione swallowed hard and held back a tear as she calmly said Harry’s name again, more to the open air this time.
“ ’mione,” Harry weakly said.
The young witch covered her mouth in disbelief, looking at the blonde Slytherin that had just uttered her nickname. She realized that Harry and Draco had somehow accidently-switched bodies. The crowd looked at the body of Harry Potter, who claimed to be Draco. They then turned to the flustered body of Draco Malfoy, who proved to be Harry Potter. Ron tried to approach his brunette friend, but Draco backed away in disgust.
“Stay away from me, you filth!”
Ron flinched at his own friend saying those words to him, which was something he knew that only Draco would do. He then turned to the blonde figure, who looked very confused and very scared. Ron tried approaching him, and saw that the blonde did not flinch, back away, or say anything insulting to him. Ron was afraid to, but he cleared his throat to try and speak to him.
“H-Harry?”
Harry smiled.
“Yes, it’s me Ron,”
Ron quickly backed away, not wanting to believe what he was seeing or hearing. Harry straightened himself up and glanced around at the gawking crowd. He then turned to Draco, who looked more annoyed than afraid of the predicament he was in. Harry took a step towards the group, but his friends and Draco shuddered a step back. He saw the tears streaming down both Hermione and Ginny’s face, and he wasn’t sure if it was because of him, or if they were there before.
“Guys, its me, Harry,” The blonde pleaded.
Ginny turned away form him and looked at the brunette, who gave her a disgusted look.
“What the hell are you looking at? Damn Weasley!” Ginny gasped and started to cry.
Harry stomped towards Draco and shoved him away from his friends.
“You bastard! How dare you insult my friends!” Harry yelled.
The whole crowd broke out into immediate gasps and astonishment. Ron couldn’t believe it, he just saw Draco standing up for Ginny… He understood now that his friend’s spirit was trapped inside the blonde… It was very hard to take in, and he wasn’t sure if he was actually dreaming the whole thing or not. Hermione wasn’t sure of what to do either. She remained stationed next to Ron, still not sure of who to protect - Draco, or Harry. She knew who as who by now, but seeing the boys in front of her made her mind try and believe that her friend is actually alive, and not trapped inside Draco’s body. She felt so confused and she felt like crying all over again. Harry couldn’t believe that he was confronting himself. He was standing before his very body; yet, he knew that the person who occupied his body now was Draco. He kept his mind on that fact, knowing that if he tried to come up with a different scenario, he would just faint right there in front of everybody. He watched his reflective image grin before him.
“Games over, Potter. Turn us back, now,” the words drawled out of the brunette’s mouth.
Harry angrily shoved him again.
“You think I did this?! I should blame you for this! You’re the one who attacked Ron when he wasn’t looking!”
“That was between me and that damn weasel, you had NO right to interfere!”
“HE’S MY FRIEND, I’D RISK MY OWN LIFE TO SAVE HIM, APPEARANTLY!” Harry yelled from the top of his lungs.
The two boys glared at each other, causing tension to fill the entire corridor again. Then, two professors finally appeared from the crowd.
“That’s enough! Break it up! Potter, Malfoy! You two are always fighting! Professor Snape, assist Mr. Malfoy to the Headmaster’s room, now! As for you Potter, you’re coming with me,”
Professor McGonagall reached for the brunette’s arm, but he violently shoved her hand away.
“Don’t touch me! You said Snape had to assist me!” He protested.
McGonagall looked stunned at Harry’s sudden behavior. Harry could feel Professor Snape grab his arm too, but he shoved him away as well.
“Professors, I can explain what is happening,” Hermione finally stepped forward.
“Ms. Granger?” McGonagall was now looking at Hermione for answers.
“Harry and Malfoy had a duel, I’m not sure which charm was used, but it seemed to have… knocked them out cold,”
The boys flinched at her quick statement, not sure if the last part was the truth or not.
“And when they woke up,” She continued, “they… they… they weren’t themselves. Somehow, Malfoy and Harry have switched bodies.”
The crowded stirred into action once again. Professor McGonagall glanced around, obviously not believing the story.
“Rubbish! There’s no such spell that can make one switch bodies with another,”
“But its true, Professor!” Ron cried out.
McGonagall completely ignored him.
“Snape, bring some Veritaserum to Dumbledore’s office. I want some honest answers from these two boys. Everyone, scatter! Go to dinner, now!”
Everyone started to depart the hallway, but Draco and Harry’s friends remained standing in their shocked positions, until McGonagall ordered them to move too. Harry and Draco were gabbed by their school robes and were led to Dumbledore’s office.
