Chapter Three:
“So why the seduction, mate?” Ron asked as they all sat around the large galley table. His brothers hooted, but Ginny hushed them with a look. Harry sent her a grateful smile.
“He’s very pretty.”
“He’s the Malfoy heir, Harry. This can’t be a good idea.” Ron looked firm on this, but Harry knew it stemmed from friendship and not jealousy.
“He is, but he’s apparently not an important heir.” Their captain placed a missive down on the table and everyone leaned in close to look at it.
Captain Potter,
While I would agree that you have managed to capture my son, let me assure you that he is not irreplaceable. As we speak, my new bride has just confirmed that she is already with child. As Draco has proven to be a weakness in the Malfoy line, I cannot justify paying such a huge sum for him. Therefore, I ask only that, should you choose to kill him, do so in a manner that will not bring shame upon the Malfoy name. It is a lot to ask, I am aware, but all the same, I would be willing to pay you a small sum should you make it look like an accident.
Regretfully Yours,
Lord Lucius Malfoy
Fred let out a long, low whistle, his brows nearly lost in his hairline as he ran a hand through his bleached out russet hair. His twin settled back in his seat, an unnaturally serious expression wiping clear any signs of merriment.
Ginny’s look of maternal outrage was to be expected; no matter who the person, to be shown such a level of callousness as this meant that even Draco had earned her motherly care. And Ginny motherly was even scarier than Mrs. Weasley when she thought one of her brood was in mortal danger. Ron scooted his chair away, his face full of disbelief while Seamus and Dean pushed their mugs towards the center of the table. Neville, Luna and Hermione seemed to understand Harry’s motivation, but only Neville showed any sign of outward concern. He took a contemplative sip of his ale and leaned forward with his arms crossed. “Harry, are you sure you’re not doing this because you pity him? He won’t thank you for that later.”
“Heh. He’s pretty enough that falling for him wouldn’t be a challenge, not by a long shot. I wanted him the moment I saw him, even before I realized it was Pettigrew’s ship that had overtaken Malfoy’s schooner.”
“Malfoy has a schooner?” Ron cut in, incredulous.
“Pettigrew,” Fred and George snarled together. Ginny’s lips pulled back to expose her teeth and Hermione had a fleeting image of those very teeth ripping open the previously named man’s throat. She shook her head to clear away the image.
Harry shot Ron an irritated look. “No, actually, it belongs to his friend Blaise Zabini and they were out together. Blaise bailed the minute he saw Pettigrew’s sails, which means he knew what was coming and didn’t want to sit around and watch.”
“Pettigrew, again. The rat bastard!” Seamus’ thick Irish brogue filled the room and he lapsed into Gaelic as he continued to curse the man. “Don’t ye worry, ‘Arry,” he ground out when he calmed down. “We’ll help ye track that arse down and slit ‘im from gullet to gizzard.”
“So then how long are we plannin’ on stayin’ at Hogwarts?” Dean had pulled out his long knife and was using it to clean his nails. His ebony skin gleamed in the candlelight while the whites of his eyes and teeth stood out in stark contrast. Though he was hardly the only person on the crew to have had a rough childhood, as an escaped slave, the bounty on Dean’s head was only marginally smaller than Harry’s. It had allowed them to form a quick kinship.
“I’d like to stay a fortnight or two. It’s late autumn now, which means it’ll be cold in the castle. Remus’ bones don’t fare well in this weather, which means Sirius is pretty much on his own for the upcoming harvest. I’d like to stick around long enough to help him out with that.”
“Not gonna settle down yet, ol’ man?” There was laughter in Seamus voice, but his eyes still held a dangerous glint. Not an uncommon reaction when Pettigrew’s name was mentioned.
Pettigrew had almost single-handedly taken down the rebellion by giving Prince Regent Voldemort the location of Harry’s parents and many others. The traitor had been knighted in turn and was almost untouchable due to the sheer number of guards he kept close at hand. A number, Harry reminded himself that was only a small fraction of the guard ordered to protect the Prince Regent at all costs.
“No, not yet. Not with the rebellion slowly reforming. The young mot Remus was seeing a while back, Nymphadora, has been relaying messages all this time. She wrote to tell me that with the old leader gone, the rebellion has been looking to me.”
“You’re going to take up Dumbledore’s mantle, Harry? Isn’t that dangerous?” Hermione looked worried as she spoke, and Ron wrapped an arm around her slender shoulders before pulling her in close.
“It isn’t that we don’t want to be a part of this, Harry; we truly do. But we’re only so many.”
“You can count-”
“On us, Harry-”
“To do whatever you need.”
“Thank you, Fred, George.” Harry eyed his two best friends, the unwavering emerald gaze missing nothing. “So then, Hermione, when are you due?”
Gin squealed with delight while the brunette pressed her hands to heated cheeks. “Shush, all of you! I’m not very far along, Harry; only a few weeks or so. We didn’t want to say anything just in case, but Ron’s been so overprotective of me lately.” She looked embarrassed to be saying it, but Harry knew she secretly loved the attention.
“Well, it’s good that Hannah will be there, then. She’s been a midwife for... nine years, now? Since she was 15, I believe. She’s birthed over a hundred babies at least and not a single unsuccessful one in the lot. She’s got two of her own, as well.” He smiled fondly as he thought of the two rascals he didn’t see nearly enough.
“If you’d settle down, Harry, you could have a household full of children yourself.”
“Gin, love, the world isn’t ready for another me quite yet.” A shadow passed over his features. “I can honestly say I won’t be bringing any children into this world while there’s still a bounty on my head. For now, I’ll simply settle for tidying it up a bit. I’ve got to do what I can for my prospective goddaughter or godson.”
“Too bad ye’ve no way to change his lineage, ‘Arry. With a father like Ron, he’s doomed!” Seamus laughed into his tankard even after the man in question delivered a hearty blow.
“That’s enough all of you! You’ll be in your cups soon enough and then who will man the ship? Sirius won’t be forgiving if his ship sinks on your lot’s watch!” With a thump of her fist to the table, Gin broke up the group and sent them off to their designated stations. Only she and Harry remained when the door closed and she turned a mock-lustful gaze on him.
“I’d ask if ye want to have a go, Harry my love, but even I can see you’ve got naught but blond hair and eyes the color of a pretty, sterling blade in your head.”
Harry sighed and scrubbed his hands over his face. “I’ve been asked by young Malfoy’s father to see that his son and heir suffer a life-threatening accident. What kind of father does that?”
“The kind who values money and title over flesh and blood. You would never do such a thing, love,” Gin soothed.
Harry glared at her over the top of his hands. “I’m not daft, Gin, so I don’t need you telling me what I already know.” He didn’t have time to react before she’d boxed his ears. “Bloody hell!”
“There, now I’ve knocked some sense into you. Why don’t you go rest? Or better, maybe you should go check up on our prisoner.”
Harry let himself out, the sound of Gin’s cheerful whistling following him down the stairs to Draco’s door. He paused with his hand outstretched then pulled it back. ‘No, I’ll let him think over what I’ve said already before I make another move.’
