A/N: Updates coming slowly. Moving house. But thank you for reviewing.
To the slumbering Severus Snape the clock tower tolling out its single bell at an hour past midnight did not wake him. And due to the heavy wool curtains drawn tightly around his four poster bed the blinding light that filled the room failed to wake him. It wasn’t until his nightstand was upended and the things upon it were scattered across the floor that he bolted up in his bed.
Severus strained to hear. An intruder had broken into his house. A very clumsy intruder. Sitting up in his bed, he turned the duvet down from his torso and reached with a trembling hand to draw back the curtain. He had nothing to defend himself with but if the intruder was as thick as he was clumsy then perhaps he would need little more than his words.
“Blimey, what a dump,” a voice muttered.
Severus paused. That voice, somewhere in the dim and faded region of his memory he recognized that voice. He hesitated, hoping the voice would sound again, perchance allowing him to place a face to the intruder.
“Oh, bugger. Not here. Please, Merlin, not here.” The voice said.
Severus’s brows pinched inward and he glared menacingly through the wool. With one swift movement he thrust the curtain open and growled.
“Yep. Here.” Said James Potter.
Severus was seething. Anger did not begin to cover the emotion and no cutesy Broadway song about loathing would even come close to the utter distaste and disdain he held at that exact moment for the ghost of the man that stood before him. “Potter.” He growled. “Get out.”
“It figures,” the ghost of James sighed. “My first saintly assignment would be you.” The younger wizard’s hair was askew, as messy as it had been when they had been boys at school. A soft angelic glow made him appear fuzzy but it provided the only light in the room. “Well, Snivellus— though I suppose it be preferred that I refrain from calling him that,” he said to an unseen being somewhere above his head. “Severus,” the ghost of James corrected himself. “I am here to—”
“You may be dead but deaf you are not, Potter. Get. Out.” He spat. With quick hands, Severus drew the curtains closed around his bed once more. He forced his head back against his pillow and squeezed his eyes shut tight.
“You know, you’re only making this difficult.” The spectre had appeared beside him in his bed.
“Bah!” he shouted and fumbled in his bedclothes for a moment before he was able to free himself from the sheets and leap from the bed. “Humbug! Get out!” he yelled.
The ghost of James Potter sighed. “Look, I’ve got a job to do, and you’re it, so you might as well cooperate. The sooner you do the sooner I can leave and make us both happy.”
Severus was silent for a moment. The very notion that James Potter, the bane of his school days existence was now appearing to him in spectral form was unnerving to say the least. It took every ounce of self restraint he had not to start blasting hexes and curses at the ectoplasmic figure before him.
“Right then, no further protests?” asked James.
Severus said nothing, continuing to glare at him.
James tried not to sigh too audibly. “Well I am the spirit of Christmas past. Your Christmas pasts, in particular. And I’m here to show you that once upon a time in a land far far away you did know happiness and that it’s not too late for you to know happiness again.”
“This is absurd!” Severus spat. “Get out.”
“We’re back to that again, are we?” James rolled his eyes. He was warned that his first assignment was going to be difficult but this isn’t how he had imagined it. “Listen, I’ve got to take you on a journey, and I don’t really care if you like it or not. But we’ve got to go, I’ve only got so much time before the next one arrives. So let’s skip the pleasantries, Snivelly, we know there aren’t any to be had, and get to it, alright?”
Severus hissed. “What in Merlin’s Beard makes you think I’m going anywhere with you? Divine journey or otherwise?”
“Look,” said James rather pointedly. “All that St. Potter stuff? Turns out it was pretty accurate and now I’m doing the good for humanity stuff in the afterlife, so just shut it and let’s get going before someone comes along, upends you and your underpants have another show, shall we?” he smirked a little too evilly for someone meant to be doing good in the afterlife.
It was hardly an agreement, the grunt that was issued from Severus’ lips, but the memory triggered by the spectre’s words was hardly inviting for further defiance. He made no move to approach the ghost, nor to dispel him.
“Fine, we’ll do it the hard way,” muttered James. Before a protest could arise from Severus’ mouth, the ghost of James had surged forward and took hold of Severus’ hand. At once a blinding light flushed through the room and in an instant they were gone.
