Chapter Three: The Escape of Stan Shunpike Three in the morning was far too early for this. Harry stubbed his toe on the leg of the table, as he made his way to the back door of his house, the wards having told him that there was a group of his aurors awaiting him on the other side. He opened it, wand out and eyes wary of just what could possibly be so important that they would come here now. Ginny had refused to even get up and find out, so he had crept down the stairs as quietly as possible and refrained from lighting his wand for fear of waking the babies, when their mother was upstairs sleeping, and he was likely to be going out and not be able to comfort them. Over the last few years, Ginny had become less and less attached to her own children, leaving Harry to tend to broken bones (Albus), bruised feelings (Lily) and wet nappies (Obviously, the twins). He had shifted her duties into his schedule as best he could, taking over as mother to the three older children, while being one for his newborns. Work had taken a back seat at first, but now that he had hired a day-nurse, he was back to it full force. Or, it was back to him, even in the small of the night, or morning. Teddy Tonks Lupin stood in front of the two others, the only one not afraid of bursting into his godfather’s house at this hour to tell him the news. Harry motioned them forward, as he adjusted his robe over his pajamas. Teddy stepped in and the others followed reluctantly. “Do you want some tea?” Harry offered, feeling the cold come in through the open door. It may have been summer, but it was still cool in the middle of the night. “Naw. We just thought we should report this immediately. We got the two Flints, but Stan got away. He must have had help somewhere. He got a hold of a portkey, and that was it. We don’t even have any leads.” Teddy said as he sat down, his movements telling the tale of his body’s exhaustion. Harry knew the three had done their best, and he couldn’t expect more from his top team. “Go home and get some sleep. I will call you if anything new comes up. Go on and get home to your wife and daughter. I’m sure that Victoire will have a nice draught ready for you and some stern words for me, as well.” Harry told him with a slap to his shoulder and a big, forced smile. Teddy rose and pushed his team out of the door, hoping he hadn’t caused his boss, and godfather, too much trouble. Harry poured himself a cup of tea, too concerned by the news to go back to sleep. Stan Shunpike was not a very good wizard, in fact he was hardly even dangerous enough to keep in Azkaban in the first place, but Teddy was right in assuming he’d had help, if he had managed to escape and throw off Harry’s best team. Marcus and his brother were likely only lucky recipients of the freedom that had been planned for the pimple marked wizard that had fooled so many in his guise as the knight bus conductor. He had led more muggle-borns to their death by turning them in to the death eaters, while they were using his bus to escape, and then pretending to be under imperious curse the whole time. Harry ran a hand through his thinning hair, still unruly after all these years, and tried to think of who would benefit from the freedom of the greasy man after all these years. It was maddening that there seemed to be something he was forgetting, something that lay just out of reach in his tired mind. He sat there, at the table in his cozy kitchen, sipping his tea as he considered the possible places to search for the missing death eater. Stan was a creature of habit, this he had read in the reports just yesterday, and therefore would be likely to return to several of his favorite hang-outs. There weren’t many that were still in existence, over twenty years of peace had insured this, and so the options were even less varied. He didn’t have the paperwork here, but he remembered a few off hand, and one of them was not far from his home, here in Godric’s Hollow. Harry checked on the twins, noted the time and wrote a note for Ginny as well as one for Agatha, their day-nurse. He dressed quickly, wearing his field clothes and packing a special bag for the hunt. He was actually feeling pumped at the thought of doing some field work and as early as it was, none of the other aurors would begrudge him the chance. In less than an hour, he had everything ready and was mounting his broom in the front yard of his house, pushing off and disabling the night wards just long enough to allow himself passage. Once he was airborne, he redid them and headed off into the night, or early morning, actually. Thank you, to the only person brave enough to at least rate this story. I know it starts slow, but the beginning is important to the story. Next chapter will bring Harry and Draco into contact, so that should give it a boost. Please, read AND review. Thank you, again.
