Three weeks had passed since his arrival at Hogwarts for the beginning of fourth year. It had been three weeks since Albus Potter had become infatuated with his best friend. Even though it was unexplainable, he still felt guilty of thinking about his best mate as anything more than just a friend. Yet every time Scorpius smiled, or ran his hand though his hair, Albus’ stomach did leaps. He was beginning to hate himself for having feelings like this for Scorpius.
“Hi Albus!” A voice said beside him. He tore his eyes away from the blond eating eggs across from him and discovered that Emily Ponce, a fellow Ravenclaw stood to his left. “Do you mind if I sit with you?” She asked sweetly, her large dark eyes going wide. Albus simply nodded and the girl took her seat next to him. “I’m sorry I haven’t had any time to talk to you this year! I really missed you over the summer Potions Buddy!” She began right away. Because of the alphabetical order of their last names they had been paired as potions partners for the past three years. Albus was fond of Emily, she was a kind and genuine girl, but once she began to speak she almost never stopped.
Albus managed to blurt out a quick “Yeah, um missed you too…” before Emily began to rant about her summer trip to Germany. It was not soon before Albus had gone back to staring at Scorpius who was deeply involved in a conversation with a good looking boy beside him. This slightly annoyed Albus, why did Scorpius need to talk to other boys beside his best friend? And why does he have to wear that gorgeous smile while talking about Quidditch to another boy?
“Albus?” His name once more brought him back to reality. It appeared that Emily was waiting for him to answer a question. “Well what do you think? Is it a good idea?” She asked again with a toothy grin not even comparable to Scorpius’.
“Ah, yeah, sounds good to me.” He replied thinking she was probably asking something about potions class.
“Great! I’ll meet you outside the Great Hall at six! See you then Albus!” She stood up and practically skipped to her group of friends at the other end of the table. Once she got there she was greeted with excitement and a bunch of girls saying “Awh that’s soo cute!”
“Wow. Mate, I did not know you liked Emily enough to go on a date with her.” Scorpius said grinning.
“I don’t. I was not even…”
“It’s alright Al. Don’t worry about it. We can reschedule our exploring for another day. It’s not every day that a pretty girl asks a guy out on a date.” He said laughing, adding the last knowing full well that Emily, although a charming girl, was far from pretty.
Albus could have kicked himself. He had been looking forward to spending the day with Scorpius exploring all the places in the castle they had already found. Now, because he was too busy to pay attention to her, he was stuck going on a date with Emily. “I’m sorry Scor, really I am.”
“I already said it was alright Al.” He replied. But there was something in his eyes that said differently, of perhaps it was wishful thinking on Albus’ part. “I guess I will just go to the pitch with David. He has a new broom that he wants to try out.” At the thought of Scorpius spending the day with David at the Quidditch pitch, Albus’ inner beast roared. He did not like the idea of his best friend alone with one of the best looking boys in the entire school. Not to mention that David was also a 6th year and nearly as popular as James, which was definitely saying something.
“Oh okay then.” Albus replied sounding a bit more annoyed than he had intended. “I hope you have a great time.” He stood up and left the table where an astonished Scorpius remained seated with a look of total confusion.
As soon as he reached the common room, Albus threw himself on the bed and smashed his face into his pillow. Why did he have these feelings for Scorpius that just did not seem to go away? Why did it matter so much to him if Scorpius wanted to spend time with another boy? There was always the possibility that he was gay, but he had never been attracted to another boy except for Scorpius. For that matter, he had never been attracted to anyone else but Scorpius. Was he just so infatuated with the blond that he could not even notice attractions to others?
If it had been anyone other than his best friend Albus may have made a move, but the thought of losing Scorpius totally was almost enough to stop his heart. “I will go with Emily on this date, and see if I can’t feel at least something for her…” Albus thought to himself, resolved to forget his feelings for Scorpius, or at least put them at bay.
At when it reached the time for Albus to leave for his date he left without even a word to Scorpius who had been studying in the common room, waiting for David to meet him. He simply left and made his way down to the great hall.
Emily had already been waiting for him. It appeared as if she had attempted to dress to impress. She had a shirt on that exposed a large amount of her chest, tight blue jeans, and makeup that accentuated her already large eyes. “Hi. You look nice.” He said awkwardly as he approached her. She immediately blushed.
“Thanks so much Albus!” she said, her toothy grin exposed, “You don’t look too bad yourself.” She added. Albus found this statement slightly amusing as he had not even brushed his hair that day and was wearing the same clothes he had on at dinner. “I was thinking that maybe we could go for a walk along the lake.” She paused and waited for his approval. Before he had time to complete his nod, she grabbed his hand and led him outside and towards the lake.
It was a beautiful evening, and in the dim light he had to admit the makeup Emily was wearing made her appear attractive. Her hand fit nicely in his as they strode the distance of the lake. They had moderately good conversation during which she actually allowed him space to speak. The sound of animals and insects rusting along the lawn seemed like natural and calming music. It was the making of a wonderful night, and this Albus was certain. Yet, he did not feel any inspiring passions toward her, not even anything beyond thinking that her face looked nice. But when he looked away from her, he imagined it was Scorpius’ hand he was holding, Scorpius who was telling him about a trip to Germany, and Scorpius who was laughing at his lame jokes.
He felt bad using Emily as an unknowing substitute for Scorpius, but she seemed happy just to be there with him. If giving one silly girl what she wanted would save his friendship with Scorpius, what would the harm be?
Just as Emily began another rant about how awful her class schedule was for the term, Albus’ thoughts drifted off to his best friend. What was he doing with David? Was he having fun? Was he giving him that gorgeous smile?
“Would you like to sit?” She asked him gesturing toward a spot by the lake.
“Yeah, sure.” He responded with a fake smile.
“Well, did you have a good time tonight?” She asked flipping her hair behind her shoulder in what Albus guessed was an attempt to be alluring.
“It was nice.” He lied.
“I’m glad.” She responded leaning in closer to him. “I had a nice time too.” Before Albus could comprehend what was happening, Emily leaned over and began to kiss him. Instantly he thought of Scorpius. How would it feel to have Scorpius kissing him as Emily was right now? Soon he began to imagine that she was in fact Scorpius. Albus put his hand on the back Emily’s neck, just as he had imagined doing to his friend so many times over, and deepened the kiss.
When they finally pulled apart the imaginary Scorpius was gone, and once more before him was the real Emily. “Wow.” She said breathlessly. “That was better than I dreamed.” With a smile she leaned back with her hands on the grass.
Albus on the other hand was at a loss for words. Even while making out with another person, all he could think about was Scorpius. His plan to forget his feelings for his best friend had failed. The only option left now to save his friendship was to simply deny those feelings, an option that Emily could come in useful for. As long as she was content with just being in his presence, he was content with pretending she was Scorpius.
Before Emily could start to talk again, Albus put his lips to hers, closed his eyes, and summoned his imaginary Scorpius.
Review! Let me know what you think. I know is slow… but it will only make it sweeter when things fall into place. Promise.
