Chapter Three
When James entered their shared room that night, the lights were already turned off. Albus was lying on the mattress with his eyes closed. He had to be sleeping.
James thought about waking him up for a moment – an aguamenti-charm might have been a good idea – but then he changed his mind. Ally would be even angrier at him if he did that. Although James didn't quite understand why his brother had been angry in the first place, it was better not to push his luck. So, he undressed quietly and got into bed. He thought of the small feast their mother would make for Halloween dinner the next day and his mind drifted off, filled with roastbeef and pumpkin pie.
...Until he heard a sound that pulled him sharply back into th present.
Albus was crying.
It wasn't loud. In fact, the boy was trying quite successfully to stifle the noise. But once James had caught onto it, the sounds were unmistakable.
He reached for the wand on his bedside table and breathed "Lumos". Light penetrated the darkness. Albus, his face turned away from James, froze. The noise stopped – apparently, he was holding his breath.
"Ally?" James whispered cautiously.
His brother was silent for a moment, then he said almost sharply: "Go back to sleep, James."
James blinked in astonishment. His little brother ordering him around? That wasn't possible. That shouldn't be possible. After all, he was the older one.
"No," he said defiantly.
He climbed out of bed and kneeled next to the mattress. Gently, he touched Albus' shoulder. It jerked away from his hand. "Leave me alone," Albus hissed.
"Ally," James almost whined. "Don't cry! It will be alright. Everything will be okay, I know it!"
"Oh yeah. You know it. Everything's always alright for you," Albus said bitterly.
"Hey!" James protested. "That's not true! I've been in trouble loads of times!"
Albus laughed hollowly. "Yeah. Trouble. This is a different thing, James."
"Well, it might be a bit more serious, but honestly, what can they do to you for it?"
"They can forbid me to see Scorpius," said Albus sharply.
"Well here, yes. But not at school!"
Albus suddenly sighed. "You don't really understand this, do you?"
James huffed indignantly. Of course he understood. Albus had a boyfriend that his parents didn't like. So what? Who knew how long such a relationship would last, anyway? And with a Malfoy of all people!
"This is our last year at Hogwarts," Albus explained. "We'll take our NEWTS, and then we're out of there. We've already found ourselves a nice flat in-"
"What?" James stared. "A flat? Are you telling me... you'll... move in together or something?"
"Not something. We're moving in together."
"But," James was searching for words, "but. But! That's many months away from now! How do you even know you're still going to be, well, together?"
"Oh, we've made it through the last three years quite well, I don't think this last one is going to be a problem, really."
Now James was completely at a loss for words. It seemed that the only thing he was capable of was repeating what his brother had said. "Three years? You've been together for three years?"
Albus nodded, massaging his temples with his eyes closed. "Had our anniversary the week before last," he mumbled.
James suddenly understood what Albus had meant. This was serious. Albus was serious about the Malfoy boy. It wasn't a matter of weeks or months, a bit of fun, like his own girlfriends during school time had been. Albus planned to spend time with that boy even after they left Hogwarts.
"Wow," he breathed.
"We've been planning this for more than a year," Albus said miserably. "Introducing each other to our parents in our seventh year holidays, and then being open about it in school for the last term. That way, people will be used to it when we leave Hogwarts and we can move to our flat and live happily ever after." He sighed. "Of course, that depended a great deal on our family's support. We've both been saving up money, but obviously, it's not enough. Scorpius' father is almost definitely going to disown him when he finds out, but I was hoping that at least our parents-" He broke off.
"I mean," he started again, "I don't want to leave our family, but... if I have to choose between that and leaving Scorpius..."
"You would choose that boy over our family?" James said incredulously. "Over us?"
"Over everything," Albus said simply. "I was just really hoping it wouldn't come to that."
James gulped. "Wow," he said again.
They were silent for a while.
"Hey," James said suddenly, "if you've been together for three years, you were already when I was in my last year of Hogwarts!"
"Yeah," Albus grinned sheepishly. "It was much harder back then. With you always sneaking around... And you've done me the greatest favour by leaving me the invisibility cloak and the Marauder's Map, I can tell you that."
"But – how come I never found out? How come nobody ever found out?"
"Well, we've always tried to keep it secret. Not because we wanted to, mind, but because," he huffed, "we are who we are. If anyone had found out, it would have become public immediately. That would have meant our parents knowing, too. And, really, we didn't want to be disowned before finishing school."
"Come off it," James tried a weak grin, "our parents aren't going to disown you."
"Hmm. Maybe not, no. But it's hard to tell. Look at how they reacted to me being friends with Scorpius. What would they do if they knew we were boyfriends? That we want to live together?" Albus shook his head thoughtfully. "I really hope they won't chuck me out. But even if our parents don't – for Scorpius, that's a very real possibility. His dad loathes ours more than the other way around, you know?"
James grinned. "It's hard to think of our dad as loathing anyone, isn't it?"
"I don't know," Albus said slowly. "Remember when he came home from work that night in summer? After he'd arrested Borgin Junior? Or when he talks about those Dursleys?"
"Hmm. Alright. Maybe."
"Anyway, it's very unlikely Mister Malfoy will tolerate us together. Which is why we have kept it secret for so long."
"So, how did you manage?" James asked again.
"Oh, we keep apart in class and in the hallways. We only meet at night, once or twice a week. Usually in the Room of Requirement, where we can't be discovered, you know? And we simply don't tell anyone." Albus shrugged. "That's all there is to it, really."
"So, no one knows?" James felt vague relief. If nobody knew, then he shouldn't feel offended that he hadn't known, either.
"Professor Longbottom knows," Albus grinned suddenly. "He caught us behind the greenhouses in our fifth year."
"Ooooooh," James said, grinning too. "Doing what exactly?"
"Ah, you don't want to know that."
"Aww, come on," James whined. He wasn't sure if he really wanted to know. But the mere thought that Ally was doing anything that you could be caught doing, as in, you didn't want to be caught doing, was intriguing. His little brother. Wow.
Albus shrugged then. "I was blowing him," he said off-handedly.
"Told you you didn't want to know," he added upon seeing James' face.
That wasn't completely true, though. James didn't exactly want to picture Ally doing something like that (it was too late now, though), but he was also oddly curious. He'd never known a gay bloke before. The wizard community shunned them much more than muggles did, from what he knew about muggles. Perhaps because wizards were so few anyway that they depended on reproduction much more.
"So," he said, trying to sound casual. "You, er, you do that, then?"
"That and more," Albus grinned mischievously. "Honestly, what do you think we do when we meet late at night in the Room of Requirement?"
James didn't have an answer to that.
Albus' small outburst of good humour didn't live to see the morning. It was raining when he got up, matching his mood. He kept to himself most of the day. He didn't want to be seen skulking around – his parents would think he was trying to dissuade them, and he wasn't. Even though he thought it was completely unjust, he had to accept his parents' decision.
When dinner came, he couldn't avoid his family anymore. Not after having skipped breakfast, lunch, and tea. Ginny had made everything James had dreamed of the night before and Harry had needed to put an engorgio-charm on the table so that there was room enough for all the food.
Albus found no pleasure in the feast. Listlessly, he shifted the pumpkin pie on his plate around with his fork. He only wanted to get back into their room. Or even better, get back to Hogwarts where Scorpius was. But then he'd have to tell him the bad news... He hadn't even sent him an owl yet but he knew he had to, soon.
Ginny seemed intent on cheering her son up. "And just think of what a Christmas Dinner we'll have, Ally! Oh, we can have so much fun here, all of us together."
"I'm not coming here for Christmas," Albus interrupted her flatly. Ginny's fork lowered to her plate. "But Ally, you said you would," she said gently.
"No. I said I would come here with Scorpius. If he is not allowed here, I'll stay at Hogwarts with him." He stated these facts very calmly. There was no reason for defiance. He didn't want to start a fight, but neither did he want the issue to be less than absolutely clear.
"But..." Ginny said helplessly, "But, Ally!"
Harry looked from one to the other. "This is really important to you, isn't it, Albus?" he said softly.
Albus clenched his teeth and nodded. He felt that if he tried to speak, he'd burst into tears again at the unfairness of it. And he definitely wouldn't cry a second time in less than twenty-four hours.
Harry sent a glance at his wife. "You know, Ginny," he said gently, "if it matters so much to him, why shouldn't we invite his friend?"
Ginny sighed. "I don't know," she said hesitantly, "I just... it doesn't seem like a great idea, you know?"
Harry just continued to look at her.
She sighed again. "But," she said with a small smile and a tone of resignation, "if he's so important to Ally, then...-" The rest of her words was drowned in a cheerful whoop – not from Albus, but from James. They all looked round at him in astonishment.
"Sorry," he said sheepishly, scratching below his ear, " Just thought Mum was giving him permission."
"I believe she was," Harry smiled. "So, do you want... Scorpius here for Christmas too?"
James shrugged. "Yeah," he said. "He's close to Ally so he can't be that bad, can he?" He gave his brother a small wink. Albus felt a strong rush of gratitude for him. James might be blunt and thoughtless, but he did stick up for his little brother when it counted.
Harry cleared his throat. "Ginny, I think he's right. We should just trust Albus on this."
Ginny took a deep breath, looking like she was about to say something. Her husband and sons looked at her expectantly. She closed her mouth, then she huffed. "Oh, all right," she said, obviously trying to look annoyed, but with definite amusement in her eyes. "Tell your friend he's welcome to come here, Ally."
"Thanks, Mum," Albus said gratefully.
"Oh, I'm not doing that for you," she said grinning and reaching over to ruffle his hair, "I'm being selfish. I want to have all my family around me for Christmas this time."
