Harry had fervently hoped that the entire situation would simply vanish. He felt that if he ignored it, then it wasn't real. Unfortunately his theory was proven completely wrong.
"Potter." Harry softly cursed at the voice behind him. Malfoy. Harry forced himself to turn around, his jaw clenched.
"What do you want, Malfoy?" The sneer on that pale and pointed face turned into an amused smirk.
"A response to my proposal. It is tradition Potter. A reply is required." Harry scowled, folding his arms across his chest.
"Malfoy, you can stop your stupid game right now. I'm not playing it, so you can drop the act."
Draco's smirk simply widened, those grey eyes narrowed cunningly in a way that made Harry more than a little uncomfortable, though he would never admit it.
"Whose playing, Potter? You'd make an excellent addition to the Malfoy line. True, you are a half blood, but your fame should take care of that."
Harry clenched his hands into fists, unable to control his temper.
"Fuck you, Malfoy!" Harry hissed through gritted teeth, unaware that they were now practically nose to nose, Draco's smug face right in front of his own.
Draco chuckled a bit too coldly at that, snapping Harry out of his anger for a moment.
"Sorry, that's not allowed…yet."
That last word was as good as a promise the way the Slytherin had said it, and it was whispered into Harry's ear in a voice that was too breathless and intimate.
Harry jerked away and was most certainly about to yank out his wand when someone snapped,
"Potter! Malfoy! Inside now, and five points from both Gryffindor and Slytherin." Harry turned to find Snape standing behind them, his face a little less masked than normal.
And had he just taken points from Slytherin? Now Harry might have to reconsider whether this was really such a bad day after all. Draco slid past Harry, smirk still on his face.
Then he looked up at Snape with an expression a tad too smug and said,
"Of course professor. I was simply discussing with Potter the courtship legalities. Has he given you an answer, sir?"
Those obsidian eyes narrowed but Snape's voice did not change, his tone still one of silk and venom.
"That is none of your business, Mr. Malfoy. Take your seat."
Draco nodded and did so, but not before he had caught Harry's eye and smiled at him, the way a snake might smile before it ate its prey.
Snape turned back to Harry, who had been attempting to move past the man as well. Harry really didn't want to discuss this whole courtship business anymore.
Unfortunately he found his path still blocked and was forced to look up, hating how nervous he must have looked. "Potter, as loathe as I am to be saying this, Mr. Malfoy is correct.
It is tradition, and even you cannot avoid the issue forever. If there has been no reply by ten o'clock this evening, you may rest assured I will come looking for one."
On that less than spectacular note, Snape swept into the classroom, leaving Harry no choice but to follow the man.
There were sounds of muffled snickers around him, which Harry ignored; it wasn't as if he didn't deal with that sort of thing all the time anyway.
He found his seat between Hermione and Ron and sunk into his chair until all that was visible was his head and shoulders. When Snape turned away, he whispered,
"Please, just send me to Voldemort now." Hermione glared at him as best she could while still paying attention to what Snape was saying.
"Harry, don't say things like that. You have to keep your head. If you end up with Malfoy, that's what could very well happen,"
Hermione hissed at him, her brown eyes furrowed with concern. Harry looked at her incredulously.
"Oh come off it. You don't have to worry about that. Trust me Hermione, Snape might be a bastard, but he's still better than Malfoy."
When Hermione didn't reply Harry noticed that the rest of the room had gone silent and everyone's eyes were now on them.
Snape had not even bothered to turn around, instead saying as he continued to write,
"Detention Mr. Potter, my office, seven o'clock."
