The next few days for the seventh years was some of the most hectic and stressful, wizarding exams and even the yule ball during the triwizard tournament paling in comparison to the frantic emotions experienced by the students of the upper years. Even best friends such as Ron, Hermione, and Harry were wary to be seen together in mixed company, fearing rumors of engagements. Many seventh year girls suddenly appeared much more glamorous and well mannered as they attempted to impress a potential husband while others seemed to group together to avoid male attention.
In the meantime, the headmistress was working with muggleborn and even half blood students who had no wizarding guardians to put together a binding contract for their marriages. While some topics such as actions of a sexual nature were awkward to speak of to a former professor, those whose parents were drafting the contracts had it a bit worse. No child wants to discuss in detail those things but in order to get the contract to their specifications it had to be done.
Hermione furtively walked up to the headmistress' door and knocked quietly. She knew she inevitably had to write up a contract of her own because even Ron had his completed due to his mother's influence. No books in the library were of any help either so the last hope for her was to talk to Mcgonagall. The grey-haired woman opened the door and upon seeing her guest allowed a small smile to appear on her wrinkled face.
“Come on in then and we shall make sure the best witch of the year gets a respectable contract” the headmistress said, moving out of the way for the Gryffindor to enter the office. Hermione sat down delicately in the chair offered to her and smoothed out her skirt nervously. She had so many questions she wanted answered about this whole situation and this may be the only chance she got to have her inquiries responded to. Seeing the glint in the young girl's eyes the headmistress opened with allowing Hermione to ask any questions she so wished before they began constructing the marriage contract.
“How are these contracts fulfilled? How do we know what the other person's includes? What if you don't like your current options? What if someone wants to marry you who you don't want to marry? What if you don't fall in love with the person? What if no one wants to marry me....” Hermione said in a rush and then quieted, a single tear falling down her cheek. Mcgonagall handed her a tissue and she wiped her eyes and blew her nose before clutching the crumpled white square in her hands.
“As for your questions there are of course answers although some may not be what you wish to hear. How each contract is fulfilled depends on what is written in the contract, for example some may only require a binding magical ceremony however others, such as the case in many pureblood families, requires a male heir before the contract is complete. Either way even if the contract is complete it does not mean the marriage can be ended, taking up the offer of one's contract means that the two are stuck together until the death of one spouse. Another reason why on occasion in pureblood families why so called accidental deaths are common. As for knowing what the other person's includes, one may ask the person themselves or their magical guardian, you dear that would be me since I am writing up your contract, and upon that request the contract must be presented. After yours is complete I shall give you an authentic copy in case this event occurs. As for is someone wants to marry you who you don't want to marry it all depends on your other options. If you have multiple suitors choose the one who you would be most happy with however if you only have the one it may be your only chance to fulfill your contract and I would advise you take it and have a civil marriage rather then face the punishment of not being a married woman by the end of the year. Same thing with the matter of love. Much like an arranged marriage this is for the good of both husband and wife so it is wise to make the best of the situation even if love is not a factor. As for if no one wanting to take up your contract, I have it on good accounts that the number of seventh year students is even this year, eight of each gender. Unless a man would rather do jail time then be married to the smartest witch in the year then I do not think you have any reason to worry. They do of course if you decline their offer and sentence the both of you to the punishment should no others be available. I know this is a lot to take in but it is the simple fact of the matter. Now then, are you ready to draft up your contract?”
“Yes,” Hermione said quietly and Mcgonagall reached in her desk for the forms required. It truly was a lot to handle emotionally and mentally even for her. Setting her jaw, she tossed her tissue in the waste basket and sat up straight. She was strong, she could handle writing the damn contract even if the events following it she was not prepared for.
“Now for the first most important aspect of the contract- finances. Since you are a muggleborn you are pretty much broke in the wizarding world until you obtain a job after graduation. With your scores I do not think this will be an issue at all however the contract requires you to state a desired amount you wish your future husband to be capable of using to support you,” Hermione's jaw dropped at the archaic sentiment of that aspect but the headmistress continued. “Knowing you to be such an nonjudgmental person I would advise to still complete this section however to a smaller amount then most women would, simply put the amount that would allow the man to be able to offer housing, food, and other basic necessities since you will not be able to provide these until you first get paid. Is this acceptable?” Begrudgingly, Hermione nodded, she hadn't really thought about it but without this contract section she would potentially be homeless. She didn't need someone with large amounts of money, for Merlin's sake she dated Ron for the most of the last year and his financial status was irrelevant to her. In this type of situation however that small promise was important, and in that moment she knew she could trust her former head of house to protect her in the little ways such as that through this contract, even if it resulted in her being wed to someone she didn't love.
The rest of the appointment went without hitch apart from a large amount of blushing when the topic of sex was addressed. Finally, each and every section was filled out to Hermione's standards and the headmistress began the complicated spells and charms to turn the paper draft into a legal magical document. When that was done all the girl had to do was sign it and use one of the few lawful forms of blood magic- a drop of blood onto the paper beside her name to ensure that it truly was Hermione Jean Granger signing the contract. Quickly, Hermione signed and then took the sterilized needle Mcgonagall had been working on as she waited. Hermione breathed in deeply and pushed the metal into her index finger. Wincing at the small pinprick she held her finger over her signature until a bead of red splashed on the page, making the entire thing glow a brilliant blue. It was complete. Now what followed was all dependent on the choices made by the seventh year boys for they would show how many, if any, choices Hermione had for completing her contract.
