Harry squinted into the fire as he sat in Snape's quarters, contemplating everything that the Council had said to him. What intrigued him the most was this whole "mate" thing, and more importantly, what was required of a mate? If having sex is on the menu then they can just forget it! Knowing that he wouldn't be able to rest with all of these curious questions in his head, Harry took a glance over at Snape, who didn't exactly look open to questions.
"So, er, could you explain this mating thing a little better?" Harry questioned adjusting the black-rimmed glasses on his nose as he did.
Snape looked up from the book he had been reading and raised an eyebrow, "What don't you understand?"
"Well... what sort of relationship do you have to have with your mate? I mean, is this an intimating relationship or a swapping of blood?" Harry questioned, feeling a bit awkward mentioning anything intimate with Snape of all people.
The Potions Master marked the page that he was on and then closed his book, "The relationship can be whatever you want it to be. Some are intimate, and some are purely business. Just because someone is chosen as your mate doesn't mean that you have to hop into bed with them, it just means that they are the one chosen to share their blood once a month, or more if you want."
Harry couldn't help but ask, "So, er, who's your mate?" He'd already figured out that it was Lucien Vontae but he was hoping the Potions Master would talk a bit about his relationship.
"Lucien Vontae is my mate, and from the expression on your face I know you're wondering what our relationship is like." Snape paused as if he were going to stop there and leave Harry in suspense, "Not that it is any of your business but since you're learning about being a vampire I suppose I'll share. For me, being Lucien's mate is completely business, we share blood once a month, and that's that. For Lucien, however, he'd rather see the relationship take a more physical turn.
"So what do you do?" Harry asked, wondering how to handle the situation if it were to arise between him and whomever would be his mate.
Severus shrugged as he reopened his book, "I give in to him sometimes." And that was that, no more said.
Harry sat quietly for a few minutes, running Severus' words over in his mind, "So what if you don't want the mate that the Council gives you?" Because Harry knew that he wouldn't want anyone the Council suggested.
"Then it's tough luck. There's only one way to get a different mate and that's by winning a wizard's duel. For example, if you for some ironic reason wanted Draco as your mate, you would have to challenge his partner to a wizarding duel and if you won and Draco agreed you two would become mates instead." Snape explained.
"Has anyone ever done that before?" Harry wondered.
Severus shook his heads, "Not since I've been at the Eternal House. Most people just take whomever the Council hands to them." The Potions Master could already tell that Harry was going to be an exception to this, "Just be careful, Potter, you may be the Savior of the World but all of the vampires in the Eternal House have more experience than you with their powers."
"Yeah, I know, and I didn't say that I was going to challenge anyone, I was just curious." Harry said before standing, "I need to go to the library." Grabbing his bag he left the dungeons and headed immediately for the Gryffindor Tower where he had to politely knock on the frame, which made him feel incredibly alienated from his Housemates.
Colin Creevy opened the door and after snapping a few photos, Harry convinced him to go and get Hermione. The witch came to the doorway and smiled when she saw Harry, "Hey, how're you?"
"I'm all right; can we go to the library? I need your help." Harry said, grinning at the look on Hermione's face because Harry never went to the library except for when he was working to solve a problem.
"Of course." The pair traveled through the corridors quickly, able to travel the course to the library with their eyes closed. Hermione could probably find it with her feet shackled and walking backwards.
When they were seated in a far corner of the library Harry finally told Hermione what he needed, and even though Hermione quirked an eyebrow at first, she eagerly went into research mode as she began pulling book after book from the shelves and laying them on the table.
Harry smiled; it was always good to have Hermione on his side.

"This is ridiculous." Harry muttered as he stood in the Common Room that he and Snape shared and waited for Draco to show up. They had to have meetings, two nights a week, so that Harry could learn the proper etiquette of an Eternal House aristocrat.
Without warning a voice spoke behind him, "Nervous, Potter?"
Turning around Harry glared at the blonde as he smirked, "Not in the least. Let's just get this over with."
Draco raised a hand, "I agree, but, since we are in the same vampire house, I suppose we can call a truce for the time being." Really, they had the rest of eternity to bicker and fight.
"Fine." Harry agreed, sitting down on the couch.
"Ah, rule number one, never sit before you've invited and seated your guest." Draco said and watched as Harry rolled his eyes, stood and then motioned to a chair. Inclining his head in polite acceptance, Draco sat down in the chair that was indicated, and then studied Harry as he sat down.
"Second, never slouch, you're shoulders should always be straight, your legs either crossed or side-by-side, never sprawled everywhere like a slob." Draco said, giving examples as he said each one.
Harry eyed the way Draco was sitting and imitated the position, "Like this?"
Draco ran a criticizing eye over Harry's figure, "Yes, exactly like that. Whenever you're in the House or in the presence of an Upper-level vampire, you should sit just like that. Obviously you should always address them as Lord, Lady, or any other term of respect just as long as you use one."
The blonde aristocrat went on like this for a couple of hours until Harry was sure he couldn't possibly learn anything more.
"Okay then, Potter, I suppose that's it for the night, I'll see you Thursday." Draco walked towards the fire, and in a mysterious fashion he disappeared into the flames.

Harry ran a hand down his soft, black leather pants, his stomach filled with butterflies as he waited for Snape to dress so they could go to the Eternal House. It had been a week and now it was time for him to learn just who the Council had decided to be his mate. Harry had tried to pry it out of Snape all week, but the man wouldn't budge a bit, only to say that as Harry's mentor he wouldn't let Harry get stuck with an ugly mate. Like that makes me feel better. Harry thought with a roll of his eyes.
Snape excited his room, wearing an outfit very similar to Harry's except that the crystal tear drop phial around his neck was filled with ruby red blood. Of course, Harry thought that Snape looked much better in his vampire clothing because the jerkin fitted his trim waist and broad shoulders very nicely.
"Well, I see your eager to get to the House tonight." Snape said with a smirk as left his room to find Harry waiting for him. Really, Snape decided, the vampire clothing done a world of good for the boy's looks. The black leather fitted a quidditch-toned body, brilliant green eyes, and off course the shaggy black hair that was constantly falling forward into his eyes. Very nice indeed. Snape concluded.
Harry rolled his eyes, "Yeah, that's it all right." He said sarcastically as he and Snape walked out of their rooms and left the castle. I'll have to get Draco to teach me that vanishing thing that he did.
Arriving at the Eternal House, Harry followed Snape in as he had done before, and just as before people looked up from their conversating to watch the pair walk past and down to the Council chambers. Walking in to the Council room, Harry once again stood before the table as Severus took his seat beside of Lucien Vontae.
"It is good to see you again Harry, and as I promised before we have found the perfect mate for you." Master Chesek motioned, and Blaise Zambini walked up beside of Harry.
This was the moment that Harry had been waiting for. He and Hermione had looked up everything he would need, and Hermione had said that she would be with him in spirit if not in physicality.
"I am sorry for the inconvenience, Master Chesek, and while I am grateful to the Council for taking time to consider a mate best suited to me, I would like to challenge this decision." It had taken Harry and Hermione hours to find the appropriate way to word his opposition to his mate.
Master Chesek raised an eyebrow, completely surprised that Harry would choose to try and defy the Council’s choice, but it was within the young vampire's rights to do so, "And whom would you like to challenge?"
This was the part that Harry dreaded most, because he hadn't discussed any of this with Snape and he could see the surprise in Severus' eyes even if the man's face was completely placid, "I would like to challenge Lucien Vontae."
The gasp that went around the Council would have been humorous were the situation not so serious. Everyone knew that with this challenge Harry Potter was asking Severus Snape to be his mate, and if Severus' face didn't show surprise before, it did after Harry's declaration.
Master Chesek frowned, "Harry, you do realize that by doing this you are always challenging Lucien's position as House Champion? And that if, in the unlikely event, you should win you would request Severus Snape to be your mate?"
Harry nodded, "I understand."
The smug look on Lucien's face made it plain to see that the House Champion wasn't the least bit worried by Harry's challenge. Lucien wasn't the Champion for nothing, the man was highly skilled and knew how to use his power to do the most damage.
"All right then. Vincente, if you would, please draw a ward around the Council table, we don't want to be hit by any stray spells or jinxes." Chesek said as Lucien removed his overcoat, drew out his wand, and came around the table to face Harry.
Harry removed his long black coat and set it aside, the silver studded sleeves of his jerkin winking wickedly in the light as he drew his wand. Harry and Lucien faced each other, bowed politely, and then took ten steps away, both waiting for the command to begin the duel. When Harry felt as though it would never come he suddenly heard Chesek order the command, and before Harry could turn around he felt pain explode in his back. As Lucien was an older and more experienced vampire his speed was a great deal faster than Harry's, but Harry had a plan. Ducking low, to avoid another jinx, Harry spun around, his green eyes following the lightening quick moves of the vampire. Lucien Vontae, House Champion, was known in the textbooks for his great speed and agility, it was said, however, that he was extremely limited in the area of mind control. Hermione had found that some vampires excelled in mind powers while others had close to none at all.
Luckily for Harry, becoming a vampire had increased his mind power, and now Occlumency came to him easily, and it also made Harry wonder if it wasn't why Snape was so good at mind manipulation.
Raising his wand Harry merely thought the word Legilimens, and like a dam breaking beneath a flood he was inside Lucien's mind, locked in as he took control of the vampire's movements, and the Council watched in amazement as Lucien froze, the only movement being the blinking of his eyes.
Using a strong imperious curse, Harry made Lucien cast away his wand, and then Harry spoke the words through Lucien, "I forfeit."
The Council sat in amazement at how simple Lucien had fallen to Harry's imperious curse, but there was no mistaking that Harry had, indeed, outsmarted the older vampire and won the match.
Master Chesek raised a hand, "The winner, Harry Potter, new House Champion." The head of the house turned to Snape, "And Alchemist Snape, will you accept Msr. Potter's request to be his mate?"
All eyes turned to Severus who seemed to be in between a rock and a hard place. Harry for one was extremely nervous because he was seventy-five percent sure that Snape would say no, after all, they had loathed each other for years. Besides, Harry told himself, the only reason why I chose him was because he's my mentor and I can trust him.
As Harry released Lucien from the imperious the man turned his eyes on Severus, and for a moment Severus and Lucien locked eyes and then Severus made his decision, "I will accept Msr. Potter's request."
Harry gave a sigh of relief as Chesek, who seemed to be a little surprised by Snape's answer, declared that Snape was to be Harry' s mate and Lucien would now be mates with Blaise.
"If that is all, this meeting is adjourned." Chesek said, rising from his chair as the other members of the Council began to talk amongst themselves. Severus however, talked to no one, and Harry remained where he was, his eyes locked with Severus' as he wondered what the other man was thinking. If he didn't know that Snape was better with mind control he would try to find out.
Snape finally stood and walked over to Harry, "Well then, let's go."
And that was it. The only thing Snape said the entire time as they walked out of the Eternal House, past gaping vampires who were blown away by the news that Lucien had been beaten. It was only some hours later, while Snape and Harry were sitting in the common room that Snape finally spoke about what had happened.
"Why did you challenge Lucien?" Snape questioned, although he was really asking why Harry had wanted him as his mate.
"Because I didn't want Blaise Zambini for a mate, I couldn't trust him when he was in school, and I'm not going to start now." Harry replied, dodging Severus' real question.
"How do you know you can trust me?" Snape pointed out.
Harry looked up from the fire and studied Snape for a moment, "I just know I can. It's a gut feeling." Vampire instincts were rarely wrong.
Snape nodded, "Well then, I won't need this any more." Using the scourgio spell Severus cleaned Lucien’s' blood from his phial, "Tomorrow night we'll perform your first mating ritual." Snape said, feeling a bit weird that he would be placing his lip to the neck of Harry Potter. Although another part of his body assured him that it would be quite fine to do so.
"Okay.... I ... You're not mad that I challenge Lucien are you?" Harry wanted to know, thinking that perhaps Severus' didn't want to be his mate.
The man shrugged, "No, I'm not mad, I was actually a little impressed at your use of occlumency and the imperious curse. I see that mind control will be one of your vampire strengths." Snape had been impressed, but of course he figured that Granger had helped the Golden Boy out because Harry would never have figured that out on his own, not with the way Harry had hated occlumency in the past.
"Yeah, I suppose I was just lucky that Lucien is weak in mind control." Harry said.
"You would have beaten him either way." Snape replied, surprising Harry with this vote of confidence.
"But you said before that I should be careful of the older vampires because they are more experienced and powerful than I am." Harry pointed out, wondering where this sudden change of heart was coming from.
Snape nodded, "I know, I just wanted you to be prepared, but I never said that you couldn't or wouldn't win. I realized when you were made Triwizard Champion that there was more inside your head than bits of fluff, although I sometimes wonder if you use what you've got in there."
Harry narrowed his eyes at the backhanded compliment, "Thanks," he replied sarcastically, "I feel all warm inside now."
This little bit of humor cracked a smile, a small smile, on Severus face, "Don't go getting all mushy on me, Potter." Snape stood and without saying good night, or 'see ya' he left the room and went to bed.
Harry stayed up for a while longer, his eyes on the fire as he contemplated being mated to Severus Snape. He wondered if Severus would want an intimate mating-bond now that he wasn't mated to Lucien Vontae? Probably not. Harry concluded with a little chuckle.
