ANGER AND PLANS
Harry sighed contentedly against the warm, sweet-smelling chest as he released the light brown nipple he’d been sucking on and blinked his sleepy eyes as he looked up at his ‘Papa’ as the man called himself. The feelings, instincts and sensations of being a baby were so strange for his teenage mind. Before he’d even realized it, he’d attached himself to Papa’s nipple and began sucking. The feeding wasn’t too bad but Harry dreaded the diaper change that would inevitably happen. He was helpless and speechless and it was so wrong and embarrassing for his teenage mind.
When Harry had been in what he realized was Miguel’s womb, he had thought that maybe he was in a spirit world of some kind- a realm that contradicted the usual connotations where an empty void was filled with not feelings of despair and depression but feelings of warmth, love, and peacefulness. Harry had never imagined it was a gateway to a new world. He wondered if all babies thought like this, if all babies were reincarnated souls that lost their memory of who they had been over time. Yet, even though it was embarrassing, deep down he loved being held in someone’s arms and feeling all their love pouring into him. It… it was all he ever wanted that he was denied in another life.
“Tired already, little one?” Papa Miguel asked with a chuckle. His green eyes were soft and he was radiating contentment and comfort that Harry gladly accepted- despite the slight resemblance between Miguel and the awful Professor Lockhart.
“He’s actually been the most active newborn I’ve ever seen. He seems too interested in the world around him to stay asleep for long,” the man who delivered him said, gazing down at him in wonder and joy. The chubby man would normally have frightened him even when Harry was a teenager because his size invoked images of Dudley. However, the plump man exuded happiness, intelligence, and love that made Harry feel safe around him. “I suppose he gets that from you.”
Miguel’s eyes went wide with wonder. “Why would you assume that?”
“Unlike Lord Tulio, you are not content to stay still,” the chubby man replied with a kind smile. “Would you like any fruit?” A red object was held a few inches to Harry’s left. An apple maybe?
“Yes please,” Miguel said, removing one hand from around Harry to place the object in his mouth and Harry realized it was a tomato, a nice big juicy one that had juices and seeds running down his Papa beard. He reached for it with an arm he managed to get out of the swaddling and Miguel chuckled. “In a few months, Amado.”
“We shall have a feast to honor the fact that the Gods have decided to remain among…” the chubby man stated excitedly as he bit into a large roasted leg. Harry noticed the aura of his Papa change drastically to fear and sadness.
“Amado and I are staying but I do not know if Tulio is, Chief,” Miguel corrected with sadness.
The chief’s smile vanished. “What? But surely if you and your child are staying, Lord Tulio will as well.”
Harry found himself in tears as the sadness escalated. Miguel snapped out of it and stared down at him with wide green eyes. “What’s wrong Amado? Are you alright?”
“Perhaps he needs a diaper change,” the chief suggested and held out his arms. Miguel quickly placed Harry in the comfort of the chief’s wide arms. To Harry’s embarrassment, the chief took him out the swaddling and checked his makeshift diaper as Harry tried to kick him away. “Not just yet,” the chief pronounced with a chuckle before swaddling him again and handing him back to his Papa.
“THERE YOU ARE!” a voice screeched from a source Harry could not see. It was too loud and he humiliated himself further by crying louder.
“Tulio, you’re frightening the baby,” Miguel said as he held Harry close to him and made shushing noises.
“Lord Tulio, welcome to my home. Will you join…”
“Frightening the baby?” Tulio repeated with anger, ignoring the chief as he came in to Harry’s sight range. Tulio’s hair was in disarray, tangled and sticking up. “I’ve just spent the last hour and a half looking for you to make sure that baby is okay. Don’t tell me I’m frightening the baby!”
“Why wouldn’t he be okay?” Miguel asked with confusion.
“Because you’re always… you!” Tulio exclaimed with a wild hand gesture to Miguel that almost hit Harry.
“What’s that suppose to mean?” Miguel hissed out as he stood up to look Tulio in the eyes as much as possible. Harry did not like where this was going and his cries turned to whimpers.
“It means that you can barely take care of yourself,” Tulio hissed back. “So who in their right mind would trust you to be alone with a baby?”
Papa Miguel drew back like he’d been slapped. “Do you really think I would allow harm to come to my child?”
“You’re not responsible enough for a child, Miguel,” Tulio said, pinching the bridge of his nose with a sigh. “You should never have had one. We never should have had one in the first place.”
Harry stilled. It appeared the man who was his new father did not want him. Rejection was something he was used to but it did not hurt him any less. His new Papa was just as crushed. “How can you say that?” Papa Miguel asked in a low voice that was almost a whisper. Then his eyes began to blaze and Miguel said in an even, hateful voice, “Then you’ll be happy to know you can go back home all by yourself. Amado and I are staying here.”
“What!” Tulio yelled. “Fine! I’m tired of cleaning up after you!”
Harry wished he could be screaming as well. He truly was not meant to have a family. He’d been the cause of his first parent’s death and now he was the cause of his parent’s break up. He knew that Miguel would blame him and then he’d be alone again.
“Lord Tulio…” the chief began as he rose to his feet. “Perhaps we should…”
“Thanks Chief Tannabok but no. Thank you for the hospitality you and your people have shown… me… but I’m leaving for home in two days, with or without Miguel. Either way, we’re through.” Then he turned to leave, “Come on, Chel, we’re leaving.”
“Lord Tulio!” the chief shouted out in anger. “Are you just going to abandon your family!” The sound stopped, signaling Tulio had stopped but he did not respond. “Do not do something you regret.”
“Listen to him, Tulio,” a woman’s voice advised.
After several moments, there was a sigh.”I’m sorry, Miguel. I…”
Papa smiled tightly and approached Tulio where he stood. “I’m sorry as well, Tulio.” The sadness started to drain from Miguel and Harry’s whimpers stopped. Tulio’s arms came around to circle both of them but then Miguel said, “So, let’s forget about going back and stay here.” Tulio’s arms dropped and he grabbed Miguel’s arm.
“Chief, if you’ll excuse us.” Tulio said and pulled Papa out into the hallway. He glanced around to make sure no one was listening before he said, “Miguel, we have a plan. Remember the plan? We go back to Spain and live like kings. Besides, what would happen when they find out what we really are?”
“They… they would…”
“They would kill us Miguel. Carve out our hearts and throw them in that swirling water of death they call She… She…”
“Shebalba,” Miguel finished.
“Exactly!” Tulio said, shaking Miguel slightly. “Remember the little voice? Listen to the little voice Miguel. What’s it saying?”
Papa Miguel was silent. “That… we can’t stay here.”
“Good. Good.” Harry’s new father replied, petting Papa’s head like a dog. It was then that Harry realized Papa Miguel’s behavior was a lot like Sirius. Could his Papa be the reincarnation of his previous life’s godfather?
“But it’s also telling me we can’t go back to Spain.”
“Huh?”
“Think about it Tulio. If we went back to Spain, flashing gold like we plan, our throats will be slit in our sleep, if we’re not arrested first.” No. Not Sirius. Sirius never thought things through.
Tulio’s response was a grumble, “And now you decide to think?” He covered his eyes with his long fingers. “Fine. New plan.”
“Yes?” Miguel asked excitedly.
“We… We… We go to… Okay, I got nothing.”
Miguel sighed. “Then what are we going to do?”
“Take your horse and live in the Jungle,” Tulio suggested with a shrug of his shoulders. “Don’t worry. I’ll think of something.”
“Did it work?” Tzekel-Kan asked the guard who came before him, a wide grin splitting his face in two. He was positively giddy with the idea of Tannabok’s fat body being disassembled in a fit of rage. Lord Miguel may be compassionate but Lord Tulio was the very image of a perfect God- merciless and destructive.
“N…no…S…sir,” the guard stuttered, flinching away and closing his eyes.
“WHAT!” the High Priest yelled in outrage. Instead of cutting out the guard’s heart, Tzekel-Kan chose not to waste time and ran to the book shelf. There, Tzekel-Kan tossed one book after another to the ground. “Nothing here. Nothing here either. I have nothing on a son of the Gods!” He collapsed in a stone chair with a sigh and closed his eyes. “Surely there is something I can use to get Lord Tulio on my side once more and make that idiot Chief suffer.”
“Sir…” the guard began, “There is more…”
“Oh?”
“The Gods… they were talking about leaving the city…”
“I already know that!” Tzekel-Kan thundered. “The entire city know that!”
“Yes, but they’re not going home to the Spirit World.”
A book slipped from Tzekel-Kan’s hands in his surprise. “Then where are they going?”
“They don’t know but there is also tension between Lord Tulio and Lord Miguel over the baby. Before the Chief interfered, Lord Tulio said he was going back to the Spirit World… without Lord Miguel or the child.”
Tzekel-Kan was speechless for several minutes before he said, “Why?”
“From what I gathered, Lord Tulio does not trust Lord Miguel with the infant.”
The creepy smile returned once more to the High Priest’s face. “If it nearly happened once, it can happen again. Here’s the plan. You will sneak into the temple tonight and steal the child.”
“Me?”
“Of course,” Tzekel-Kan replied with a roll of his eyes. “I do not care what you do with it. The child is probably immortal anyway. Just get rid of it. The Gods will be outraged with the city and each other. Then the Age of the Jaguar shall begin. If he is not killed in the initial bloodshed, spread the rumor that Chief Tannabok was seen at the temple when the child was kidnapped.”
“Uh…as you wish Sir.”
