III.
The next several months were much the same. Bill retreated to Charlie's the day before the full moon and returned home the morning after. It felt so much safer for everyone, and by retreating before his nerves overcame him, he didn't risk hurting Fleur again. He hated imposing on his brother, but there was no one else he could bear to turn to, and Charlie assured him it was no imposition at all. He liked spending time with Bill. They hardly ever got to since they'd left school and moved out of the Burrow. He said it was 'just like old times'. Bill knew that was bullshit. If it was like old times, he wouldn't be having nervous breakdowns on the cabin floor.
'That's an exaggeration though,' he conceded. He hadn't had a fit like that first moon again. He did get tense and awkward and blurt out thoughts better left private, but now that he knew what to expect it wasn't quite so...okay, it was still pretty pathetic, but at least he knew his temporary lapses in sanity were just that – temporary. And if he had to be an emotional mess in front of someone, he could think of no one he'd rather know all of his worst fears and most humiliating indiscretions than his first and favorite brother.
Charlie never judged him for even the most unflattering thoughts. It was an unexpected relief to have someone who knew all his strengths and weaknesses and liked him anyway. Spending time with his brother was such a small thing, but it made the world seem so much better a place, that he saw no harm in it. First it was the full moon, but then he would invite Charlie for a drink on his night off, and that drink somehow became setting a third place at the dinner table twice a month. He hadn't thought anything of it. Charlie was family, and Fleur had never complained. She was the type to complain about everything she didn't like, so he just figured she didn't mind.
'When did I start calling it 'complaining'?' He used to think of it as 'making her opinions known' and thought it was cute, but really, it was the same thing, wasn't it?
And that dinner in the middle of the week somehow leaked into take away on Friday night. Sometimes, they watched films, but most of the time, it was just sitting in front of the fire, talking. Charlie would tell hilarious stories about the dragons and his coworkers, and they would reiterate old stories at each other from school that always seemed to start with the phrase, 'Hey, do you remember...?' And they would laugh and laugh. The first few times, Fleur had joined them, but Bill supposed it was all just a little too macho to keep her attention for long. He hadn't given it much thought after that. So when she stormed down the stairs in a rage, he was utterly boggled.
Charlie climbed out of the floo. "I come bearing food," he declared playfully as he set fish, chips, & beer on the coffee table. "Don't say I never got'cha nothin'," he joked.
"Charlie, you're early," Bill smiled, pulling his brother into an amiable embrace. At least, he thought it was amiable. The firm tap of his wife's blasted heels didn't seem to have the same opinion, nor the way she declared, "He is 'ere, again?!"
Bill turned and blinked at her. It didn't take a genius to see that she was furious, he just couldn't understand why. The woman was an enigma, one he'd resigned himself to accepting he would never solve. "Fleur, what...?"
Fleur stomped her foot petulantly. "Why is he 'ere again, Bill?!" she demanded.
"He's my brother, and he has a Saturday off of work. Of course he's here," Bill answered, honestly perplexed. Why was she making a big deal out of this? Charlie was always coming by. He practically lived with them.
"Your other brothers do not visit nearly this often and zey live in ze same country!" she demanded as the two men exchanged looks of bewilderment. "It eez always Charlie zis and Charlie zat. Charlie Charlie Charlie. Who eez more important to you? Moi? Or Charlie?" she demanded.
"Fleur, calm down," Bill said in his best soothing voice. Was she feeling neglected? It was true that he'd been rather busy with things lately. What things, now that he thought of it, he wasn't entirely certain, but he was sure they were important.
"I will not calm down!" she declared. "Who eez more important to you, William? Moi? Or Charlie?"
"Uh, did I come at a bad time?" Charlie asked, but was utterly ignored for his efforts to quash the awkwardness of being the subject of an argument as if he weren't in the room.
"Fleur, that's enough," Bill tried to be firm, but the woman just wasn't having it. She wanted an answer, and she wanted it now. It didn't matter that it wasn't even a sensible question.
"Answer!" she insisted thickly.
"Why should I?" Bill snapped. "What you're asking makes no sense."
"It makes perfect sense!" Fleur demanded. "I am your wife, but when do you look at me? When do you touch me? It is always Charlie Charlie Charlie! If Charlie is so special, then why ever marry me?!"
Bill was honestly starting to wonder the same thing. When she was slamming doors and stomping around and demanding he answer senseless questions, he couldn't seem to find much to love in his dear wife. "You're being ridiculous!" he declared.
"Ridi—ridiculous! And is it not ridiculous that you spend more time with your brother who lives in a foreign country than your wife who shares your bed? Is it ridiculous to want to know where I stand?! If ze Death Eaters caught us and you could only save one, who would you choose? Would it be him, or me? It would be him, yes?! Tell me!"
"Don't ask questions you won't like the answer to," Bill snarled back, unable to check his own words now that tempers had flared so high.
"Say it!" Fleur demanded. "Admit it!"
"Yes, okay! Of course I would choose Charlie! He's family and I love him! You're just...!" Bill stopped himself from saying 'an annoying French twat who thinks she's the centre of the universe', but only barely.
Fleur screamed in rage and disapparated before anyone could say another word. A deadly silence descended on the house. Charlie tried not to be happy. Bill was fighting with his wife. He shouldn't be happy that it didn't look like there could be any coming back from such a fight. But he was happy. He was happy because Bill had chosen him. It was in a fit of anger, but he was the one who was most important to Bill. He couldn't help letting that tiny sun trapped in his breast shine, just a little. He managed to keep it on the inside, but it was hard. "Bill, you okay?"
Bill shook his head, but it wasn't clear whether that was a no, or just Bill's way of trying to clear his cluttered thoughts. After a pronounced delay, he told Charlie, "...I think we're going to need more beer."
