Chapter Three:
It was the latest possible moment Harry and Tom could pack. Harry was right. Tom thought We are not going home. We are leaving it. Not at all anxious to be leaving the comfortable beds, the old stone walls that still seemed warm and the delicious food and drink that appeared magically at the tables in the great hall, Tom and Harry had both left packing for later.
They had spent the majority of the day hiding away from peers Tom would hardly miss in order to spend their last day at Hogwarts walking the beautiful grounds, sitting a little closer than usual in the common room and visiting the rooms they knew best.
They did take a small amount of time to say a proper goodbye to old Horace Slughorn and make his hourglass sand spin faster for the last time until their return, by Harry's request.
Tom sighed, putting his last pair of robes back into his trunk and looked over at Harry, who was done packing and now perched on the edge of his bed.
"It's not over." Harry reminded Tom with a small smile.
"I suppose I only feel complete when I'm facing constant challenges." Tom admitted, taking a seat on his second-hand trunk.
"Yeah" Harry replied "I can tell." he stood up and crossed to where Tom was sitting on his newly closed trunk. "But you have a new challenge... One I think is a little more interesting than a bit of potions homework." He locked lips with Tom passionately. Tom had anticipated this move just as Harry had stood and now responded with fervor.
In order to gain some amount of control over the kiss Tom would have had to stand. This was ridiculous. Instead he nearly denied Harry entry as the boy attempted a tongue kiss. Harry broke the kiss with a worried gaze. "What's the matter?" he asked.
Tom raised his eyebrow, standing. "Nothing." He reached out and took Harry's chin in one hand and closed the kiss again. To his surprise Harry closed his eyes and kissed back, though somewhat hesitantly. Tom let the emotion rush through him. He tried for a stronger kiss and Harry matched his forcefullness. Tom probed experimentally with his tongue and Harry granted him the wish he hadn't given to Harry.
Tom could feel his mind going blank again. His hands reached, seemingly on their own, into Harrys robes at his chest. Harry broke the kiss suddenly for a second time. "Calm down..." he whispered to Tom, but seemed unable to follow his own rule.
Harry flung himself into another hard kiss and Tom was barely ready for it. He was almost knocked back in the force of it, but righted himself and pushed Harry harshly down on the bed. Harry bucked up as Tom's leg found it's way between his.
There was the sudden noise of the door opening and suddenly Harry and Tom were on opposite sides of the room. In panic Tom had darted back to his dresser and was now "checking he hadn't missed anything" He was surprised but not at all upset that Harry had also reacted immedietly to the sudden danger and was under his bed "looking for a missing sock or something." Lestrange came in.
"You two haven't packed?"
"As you can clearly see," Tom began, very annoyed at this intrusion, "We are done packing and have the common sense to make sure we haven't missed anything."
Lestrange looked taken aback and Tom couldn't blame him. He was always calm, always cool, always polite and always charismatic. He immediately corrected himself. "My apologies, Lestrange....I...."
"Tom and I are a little on edge." Harry filled in. "About going back."
"Ugh I don't blame you." Lestrange said. "No problem Tom. I would die in your position. Muggles all summer and nothing you can do to keep them away. Why is it illegal to curse them in the first place? I'd invite you to my place, but we'll be gone all summer anyway..."
Tom could tell Harry was becoming increasingly uncomfortable with Lestrange. Every time the boy opened his mouth he had some silly comment to make, and they nearly always had to do with how wonderful he was just because he was pureblood. Tom was sick of it. He was half, and apparently that didn't make him too tainted to be Lestrange's friend.
W-what? Why am I even bothered by this? Muggles are fools! Looking magic directly in the eye without noticing. Forcing themselves to forget any abnormality in there stupid little lives. But....Harry didn't like it. Tom silently denied this sudden interest in all that made Harry unhappy and tried to ignore Lestrange, but his mind wouldn't let him.
He and Harry were both half, and both talented. Was it so strange for this to happen? Several wonderful students who were half or less, after all, were cookie-cut Ravenclaws and members of the Slug Club. Slughorn had never been wrong about a student, to his knowledge. If he said “You'll go far,” they went far.
But Harry saved him the trouble of correcting Lestrange. “I think you're forgetting that I'm half blood.” He pointed out. It didn't even have a hint of a challenge in it, but Lestrange took it as one anyway.
Lestrange sneered. “You don't have to wear it on your sleeve, Potter.”
Tom turned with speed that surprised even himself. “Lestrange!” He said in a commanding voice. “There is no need to give my friends any attitude. Now get out, before I hex you.”
Lestrange stood, looking for a minute like he might fight back. But he must of read danger in Tom's eyes. He backed away slowly, as if facing a venomous snake. “Ever since you met Potter here” He jerked his head rudely at Harry “No one is good enough for you anymore.”
Tom smirked cooly “You, at least, were never good enough anyhow.” He took out his wand. “I've simply put up with you long enough.” Tom said dangerously. Lestrange backed out of the room.
“You didn't have to do that.” Harry said automatically, looking at that door and not Tom.
“But I did do it, didn't I?” Tom responded as if nothing else needed to be said.
“I could have done it myself if he threatened me.”
“He didn't need to go quite that far to piss me off. And you forget Harry- I'm half blood too. I know you figured it out before.”
“Hm?” Harry looked confused. “No...you told me.”
Tom paused. “Nonsense.” He said, looking at Harry. He didn't add: I'm not so foolish as to wear my impure blood on my sleeve in Slytherin house, like you are.

“No, you did.” Harry continued with a smile. “You said your muggle father left you. I sort of figured that's why you hated muggles...any of this ringing a bell...?”
Tom sighed. Yes. I told him, didn't I? Straight out? I suppose...I had nothing to loose....He is half himself..
“Come on.” Harry stood, seemingly unfazed by anything that had occurred in the last few minutes. “We'll be late for the announcing of the house cup.”
“Oh yes...the cup.” Tom stalled slightly. He had, after all, been interrupted during his favorite moment of the day. “Though obviously by points we've won.”
“Hey...don't ruin the moment.” Harry said jokingly.
The great hall was more cheerful than Tom currently felt when he arrived, taking his place in the seat closest he could find to Lestrange (who was avoiding his eye as much as possible) just to make a point. He nodded to professor Slughorn and began eating. Slytherin colors and large banners with snakes adorned the wall and ceiling. The Slytherin table was busy celebrating their obvious win.
He noticed immediately that Professor Slughorn had already drank a little too much and Professor Merrythought was having trouble keeping himself off the drink for the night as well. Professor Dumbledore, seated closest to Merrythought, was in what appeared to be a heated political discussion. Tom scowled. Why wouldn't this man just quit teaching and join the ministry already? Tom was sure he could get a fairly decent job, and rise very quickly as well. Not unlike Slughorn, he could recognize talent with ease.
Harry interrupted his thoughts. “Oh God, this treacle tart is so good.” He said at Tom's shoulder.
“It's your favorite.” Tom remarked, not thinking.
“What?”
Hm?”
“Come on, Tom.” Harry scolded slightly “Get into the mood of things. You act like....” He leaned in closer to whisper “You act like you don't want to be alone with me all summer.” Harry said seductively. Tom's heart skipped and he felt and interesting twitch in his lower regions.
“You know for a fact that isn't the case.” he said calmly to Harry. “But nonetheless, leaving Hogwarts is never a joyous occasion for me.”
“Let's make it one.” Harry said, regarding Tom with a serious eye.
Professor Dippet stood up and Harry pointed at him. Tom turned to face the staff table. “Thank you all for another excellent year at Hogwarts!” There was applause from all tables, though Tom realized some were weaker than others. He clapped politely next to an enthusiastic Harry. “I am proud to announce that the underclassmen testing this year was one of the top scores we have seen here at Hogwarts for the last two centuries!” Tom raised his eyebrow, impressed. A majority of the students, and especially the underclassmen, clapped enthusiastically.
“Wow.” Harry said. “I guess they don't know ours yet, though, do they?” Tom shook his head.
“We get them in the mail, I've heard.” He replied to Harry.
“That said: an extra congratulations to the Slytherin house, and their excellent grades, Quidditch team, and lack of rule-breaking.” The Slytherins applauded again, and some even stomped their feet in excitement. Tom's mouth quirked upward slightly in amusement. Harry was grinning and laughing next to him, clearly feeling the moment just as much as the other Slytherins. Tom gave him a full smile for his cute reactions to Professor Dippet's announcement.
“Especially our lack of rule-breaking, right?” Harry joked over the sound of the crowd. Tom laughed a little. He was, after all, right. Slytherin was notorious for disregarding the laws of the school. Tom hadn't caused any trouble this year, for one. Even if he had never been caught before, he was used to cause a few nasty incidents himself. Those who usually wear caught, however, had happened to stay out of trouble, or had gotten better at what they did, according to the house points counting.
“Last, but not least by any means, please have a wonderful and safe summer and enjoy the break! Thank you.” Professor Dippet sat, to more applause. Tom caught Dumbledore giving Harry a smile and a nod, which Harry naturally returned. Then the transfiguration professor went back to his desert plate and conversation.
Harry turned to Tom. “I can't wait to get to London, actually, Tom.” He said sweetly.
Tom smiled. “I do hope we have enough.” He said in a low voice. No one needed to know he and Harry were going to the Leaky Cauldron. They may invite themselves along. This was his time with Harry. His and his alone.
“I'm sure we will.” Harry said happily, if not a little more loudly than Tom cared for.
----
The Hogwarts Express seemed a tad more crowded than usual to Tom. Close proximity to others had never been his strong suit, though he pretended differently with surprisingly good manners. Harry seemed very comfortable, chatting away, trading cards with the others and eating chocolate frogs (again.)
Tom passed the time by looking at Harry closely, noticing and memorizing features in case the information came in handy while he and Harry were alone. Despite his frequent denials to a suspicious Harry and Transfiguration teacher, Tom's mind recently held almost nothing but desire to be close to Harry, especially physically.
Harry knew Tom was watching, he could tell, but ignored it. He acted very naturally under pressure, Tom noticed. Perhaps it comes from being at Durmstrang...or being...in the middle of a war, actually. Tom had just realized Harry was coming from a very hot part of the continent for Wizards. Of course, the muggles were also in a war of some sort, but this didn't interest Tom. But Gellert Grindelwald...there was an interesting subject. Harry hasn't mentioned this before...was this his real reason for attending Hogwarts instead now?
Tom saw Harry was looking at him expectantly.
“Are you alright?” He asked. Tom nodded quickly, pretending he hadn't been thinking anything interesting.
“Sorry- were you speaking? I was thinking about the political war in the northern part of the continent. ” Tom replied.
Harry smiled as his friends immediately began to voice various opinions on the subject. Apparently the subject is more interesting to them than it truly is to me. Thought Tom.
He caught Harry's eye again. “Well, I was.” He mouthed to Tom, who twitched his lips up in a small smile.
Lestrange interrupted the others. “Wait-Wait” He shouted over the crowd of interested and opinionated students. “I want to know.” Everyone quieted down.
“Er...” Harry began to Tom “The others were wondering if it would be alright if they dropped by to see us.”
“At the orphanage?” Tom spat the word, appalled that anyone had asked.
“No.” Harry said as if Tom had a few screws loose. “At the inn.”
Tom paused for not three seconds before replying “The inn?” Somehow he had to make this conversation turn around. No one was allowed to visit Tom and Harry in the inn, and he was a little peeved Harry had mentioned it at all. And the nerve of Lestrange after last afternoon!
Harry always seemed suspicious of Tom's intentions of getting them alone: was he really so daft as to invite the others or was he simply protecting himself from Tom's advances? Tom pushed these disturbing thoughts out of his head. Either way he couldn't allow it.
“The Leaky Cauldron.” Harry said, a little frustrated.
“Oh, the Leaky Cauldron. Harry, I said I wasn't going. You can stay alone if you like.” Tom said, trying for indifferent. Harry looked confused. I know you must be a legitamens. Use it, you fool. I don't want them to know!
“Oh.” Harry said blankly. The others stared at Tom.
“You're just going to go to the orphanage?” Lestrange asked mockingly. Tom ignored him and addressed Harry.
“Potter, you're the one who asked. I told you no. I don't know why you're on about it.” Come on, Harry. I obviously don't want them there....
“Must of forgot. Actually I don't have the money alone.”
“Well,” Lestrange offered “I'll be back a week before September 1st. Let's grab one then- just you and I.”
Tom visibly shivered with rage, but no one seemed to notice. “Uh..well, at that time I'll probably...be visiting my cousins.” Harry said. Though to Tom Harry was clearly improvising, the others seemed to buy this story. The room filled with “Too bads” and “Wish I could get one with yous” and “Too busy this summer to visit anyway, I supposes.” Tom suppressed a smile at the close call.
After this the boys began to grow weary of chat and moved their trunks down from the compartments as they neared King's Cross. The Hogwarts Express arrived just in time for the near end of Tom's patience. Harry took Tom's things down before his. Tom pretended to take no notice. They disembarked as a group and disbursed quickly to their relatives waiting on the platform.
Usually at this time Tom felt comfortable solitude settle in. But this time, he had Harry and the feeling was more of a comfortable companionship. He looked over at the handsome wizard beside him and thanked whatever was out there for the first time in his life. And thus they stepped into the muggle world alone but for each other.
