I put the last of my newly bought clothes into a box. Jeans, skirts, blouses, shirts, dresses, shoes, robes, sweaters so on and so on- I must have bought enough for five people. Even in my old life I had spent a lot of money on material goods. I stacked up one box on top of another. Slowly, I levitated the two stacked boxes and carried 2 large ones on hand and held my wand in the other.
On three separate occasions I nearly hit some students passing by. Then I reached the stairs. "Oh great, this will be fun," I thought to myself.
"There you are. Would you like some help.... Eileen?" a man's voice said in front of the levitating boxes. I looked down at their feet but saw nothing but black robe.
"Severus? Is that you?" I asked, "I can't see you past these boxes."
"Yes," he said and took the two large boxes I was carrying.
I continued to levitate the stacked boxes because I wouldn't be able to see anyways if I had carried them.
"Thank you so very much," I said.
He studied me carefully, "Why didn't you just use your wand to transport them to your room?" He eyed the wand I was holding.
"Oh, posh posh!" I said "You know what I've noticed, Severus?"
"Hmm?" he said and turned to go down the stairs holding my boxes. I followed him.
"I've noticed that everyone around here uses magic for EVERYTHING. I mean once in a while, I understand. But everytime there is a mess, or something small like that, they use their magic. Honestly, it's like no one has hands anymore," I said showing him my hands and causing the boxes to move around in the air.
"Yes, it's an unfortunate thing," he stated.
I stomped my feet, "well. I refuse to do that. I refuse to depend on magic for everything."
"Wonderful," he said.
"Am I boring you, Severus?" I asked cocking my head to the side and looking at him, making sure he knew I was looking at him.
He gave me a sideways glance, "Of course not."
"So why aren't you saying anything?" I asked.
"But I have. I am right now," he said smootly.
I sighed, "you don't speak much do you? Or is it because you don't know me that well?"
"I speak as needed," he says then puts my boxes down on an armchair. We had reached my new room without me even realizing it.
I looked around. Where we were standing was a sort of den, on the far left and far side of the room was a large burgandy sofa that stretched from one wall to another. One large single window was on the far side of the wall, currently covered by a large white sheer curtain. There was a plain rectangular coffee table and a large rug underneath covering almost the entire floor. A fireplace was across from the sofa and already aflame. Candles hung on every wall, but besides that the room was bare of decoration.
I set down the boxes I was carrying beside the others. Directly to my right was a door that lead to my bedroom, again with one single window covered in sheer white curtains. There was a large mahogany dresser with matching wardrobe and two night stands on each side of the bed. The four poster bed was in the center against the wall, the bed had been made with white sheets, white pillow cases, and a large white fluffy comforter, all made out of silk- a stark contrast from all the mahogany woods, but I must say very elegant.
"The Headmaster wanted to see you," Severus said from behind me, still standing by the doorway in the den.
"Oh, I see. So that's why you were looking for me?" I asked taking the boxes, one by one, and putting them in the room.
"Yes," he said a short reply. He inched closer to the door leading back into the hallway.
"Alright, then," I said and nodded.
He looked at me for a second longer then turned to leave. I ran after him and grabbed his arm before he had a chance to get to the hallway.
"Severus," I said still holding on to his arm. He looked down at my hand, but said nothing, instead looked at me plainly and waited.
"Ummm... Where are we?" I asked. I had not paid attention to where I was going when I was carrying the boxes and truth be told I didn't even realize I didn't know where I was going even before I packed. It was only through following Severus that I ended up in my new room at Hogwarts.
He looked at me amusingly with a slight curve at one corner of his mouth, "In the dungeons."
"Ah!" I said and pointed at the window, "that explains why the windows are so high up on the walls."
"Is that all?" he asked looking bored as ever.
"No," I said realizing I still held on to his arm, but did not let go, "how do I get to his office?"
He sighed, "follow me." As he turned my hand let go of his arm and I followed after him quickening my short strides to keep up.
In the hallway were a few doors, I had never been in this part of the castle before. At the end of the hall was a door which we went into and there was a small narrow room with a spiral staircase made of dark metal.
He stepped onto the third stair and I went on the first, but we were still standing close together and now, instead of my head reaching to below his shoulder length, I was dwarfed only reaching up to his stomach. I looked up at him and gave him a small smile.
He looked down, "this stair leads to directly to the Headmaster's office." Then the stairs started to move up, just like the other one with the eagle.
"Severus, where do you sleep?" I asked out of nowhere.
"In my bedchamber," he said plainly.
I laughed, "I know THAT. But where in the castle?... I mean... professors stay here don't they? So where do the professors stay in the castle?" I blushed from embarrasment with my question- it was completely innappropriete to ask where one sleeps.
"Each professor's bedchamber is on the floor where their student's dormitories are. Mine is on the same hallway as yours," he said.
"Oh I see," I said. But before I could continue to talk, the stairs stopped and we reached my father's office.
Severus stepped off the stairs and proceeded to knock on the door which opened immediately. I followed him inside and we were greeted by my father, the Headmaster, who sat on his grand chair behind his grand desk. It was odd seeing my father like this, but it had always been his fate to become the great man he is now.
Severus pulled out of the chairs in front of the desk, and then sat on the other. A gentleman, I thought to myself and sat on the chair.
"Eileen, I have called you here to discuss an important matter," my father started. I looked at Severus who had full intentions of not going anywhere. My father must trust him very much to speak about our business in front of him. Well, if my father trusted him, then I would too.
"There is something you must know about the time period you have come to," he said. He continued to tell me about the war, about a dark wizard named Voldemort, about a boy named Harry Potter and about what role I would play in this war.
At the end of the long conversation, which was mostly with him talking, I had a throbbing headache. I sighed, "So what are you trying to tell me, Father? That after I had just escaped one danger, I am put into another?"
He reached out to me, but I lowered my head and looked down at my new shiny black shoes.
"You must do your best to not attract attention to youself, Eileen. If Voldemort every found out about you, then he would have another way to live. We have come to know the consequences of your position before, and now that we know, we can prevent any danger from taking form," my father said calmly.
"Excuse me, Headmaster," Severus said. "But what position are you speaking of?"
Severus didn't know. I looked at my father, he had not told him. Would he tell him now? Would he divulge my secret?
"All in due time, Severus," my father said to him. I sighed a breath of relief. I couldn't trust anyone with my life except my father. Severus frowned at his answer, but said nothing more.
The three of us made our way to dinner, the entire time my father talking about sweets and candies. I smiled remembering how he had always loved candies. But he seemed different, my father. He was older and wiser, but still seemed like a child at heart. Although I had lost my dear beloved daughter, I was glad that I still had my father.
During dinner, my father announce of my staying at Hogwarts. He told them my name and that I would be helping any first and second year students with potions if they needed it, and also that I was a trained nurse and would be helping Madam Pomfrey (Poppy) as well. He did not mention that I was his daughter. At first I was hurt, but then remembered that this was for my protection. No one could ever know that I was Albus Dumbledore's daughter; there would be too many questions about my young age and what I was doing at Hogwarts.
I chose to eat a simple dinner of spaghetti and sat to the left of my father with Severus on my other side. I leaned close to my father.
"Father, why can't I stay up in the tower with you? I'm sure there are other rooms I could occupy up there," I whispered to him.
He patted my shoulder, "You must call me Albus."
"Of course," I sighed, "so? About the rooms?"
"Eileen, I cannot always be there for you," my father, Albus, said.
"What does that have to do with anything?" I asked getting slightly annoyed. My father had always been straightforward before, but now it seemed he spoke cryptically in codes.
"If something were to happen, you need to be protected. Severus is my closest dear friend," he said and went back to eating showing that that was the end of our conversation.
After dinner and as everyone went into their own respective rooms and common rooms, Severus and I went down to the basement to our rooms. It turns out that Severus's room was right next to mine. I smiled at that and he raised his brow when he saw me staring at him as he opened his door.
"Professor Sprout is right beside yours," he said gesturing over to the door on my right. I nodded and went into my room, but not before I told him goodnight- he did not say anything back.
