Also, if you find any faults in my writing, any mistakes, I'm sorry, I check the chapters several times before posting it, and they must have slipped through. Anyway, on with the story! Enjoy!
3. the first weekend
The first week has gone over quite easy. While all of us are settling into our new roles, the students have been doing the same.
Though the house rivalry has died down quite a bit in the last few years, two of the Slytherin fifth-years have taken to charming the robes of unsuspecting students a most fetching blend of green and silver. It’s just that which has me sitting in my office on a Sunday afternoon. Just marvelous. I strike an intimidating pose as the two boys cower before me.
“I am very disappointed in you two” For getting caught by Granger I add silently, but I’d better not tell them that.
“You two are Slytherins. Have you any idea what that means? You have the responsibility to uphold the reputation of Slytherin house, and you are doing a very poor job.”
For good measure, I sneer at them, sitting myself down on the corner of my desk. I marvel over the fact that I still tower over the boys. Sometimes I forget how tall I really am. It’s one of the drawbacks of hanging around Hagrid too much.
“But, headmaster…” One of them begins, but I cut him off with a wave of my hand.
“I do not want to hear it. Not if you do not wish to start this year with negative house points.”
I act as though I am pondering a suitable punishment for them, but secretly, I already know. I am not going to deal with something as trivial as this. I’ll let someone else deal with it. Now, who can I bug by sending two Slytherins over? Ah, right.
“I assign you both to a week’s detention with professor Potter. It might teach you something about inter-house communications.”
They gasp, and I am correct in my assumptions that Potter is not their favorite teacher. How could he be? He’s an idiot.
I am almost ready to dismiss them, but as I see two bright blue eyes twinkling at me from his frame, I think better of it.
“One more thing.” They look back up at me, frightened to the core.
“If I hear of you two being caught again, I will be very angry indeed. You will show your professors respect, and you shall not retaliate, do you understand?”
They glance at each other. Apparently not. Let’s make it a little clearer.
“It means that if I hear of the both of you trying to retaliate during, say, supper, there will be serious consequences. Especially if it is against the professor who landed you in detention. Am I clear?”
The mischievous glint in their eyes as they quickly glance each other’s way before answering me tells me I am.
“Yes, Headmaster.” they chorus. Good. I wave a hand in the general direction of the door.
“Dismissed” and their gone.
The moment the door shuts behind them, I slump a little. I am afraid to look up, to see myself in the mirror. I am not ready to see his twinkle in my eyes yet.
I move to stand by my window. I have a great liking for windows. It was the only thing I missed in my dungeons, though I had several enchanted windows looking out over the grounds, and one with a view of the lake, I always preferred real ones. There is nothing better than to drink your first cup of tea in the warmer months, sitting on the windowsill, looking out over the grounds. I like it. Especially right before sunrise, when the grounds are deserted and the world is slowly waking up. I have to like it. It’s the only fresh air I’ll get on my happiest days, when I spend the rest of my waking hours hanging over a steaming cauldron. I do not need a lot to be happy. It’s just a shame most of those happy moments are sullied by the appearance of some idiotic student. Or colleague.
The day outside looks beautiful, and I imagine it is. It means every student who is able will be outside. Oh happy day. I’ll be in the dungeons, brewing.
I pull the door open, scowl in place and ready to move across the castle, robes billowing behind me. To my surprise, I am stopped by a young woman in my doorway, hand raised to knock. I stare intently at the hand until it is lowered.
“Professor Granger” I sneer. I can just see my nice afternoon in the labs flying out the window. Damn.
“Headmaster” She nods at me and ducks into the room through the gap between me and the door. Oh you have just got to be kidding me. I sigh, and close the door behind her.
“Miss Granger, I do not believe I have invited you into my office. Do tell, why are you here?”
As I turn around I notice her rummaging through my liquor cabinet. I can feel the annoyance bubbling up inside of me, but I am determined not to let her spoil a good day. I do not have nearly enough of them.
After pouring herself a drink, which makes me frown, it’s barely three in the afternoon, she holds a second glass out to me. I take it, I’ll decide later if I’m actually going to drink it.
She lets herself sink into a chair near the hearth.
“I have a problem.” She says. I snort.
“Indeed”
She shoots me a withering glance. It’s good. It’s not mine, but it’s close.
“I am serious, Severus.” I cringe at the use of my first name, but I do not correct her. If I know anything about this girl, fighting her presence will only result in having to deal with her longer. I merely want her to leave.
“I have a problem, and only you can help me.”
Bugger. I’ll take the alcohol. Lowering myself onto my desk, which I am sure will soon enough start to exhibit prints of my backside, I take a large gulp of the vile stuff she poured me, and I raise an eyebrow in question.
“I need you to promise me something first.” She says, and I shrug. Depends, doesn’t it?
“You can’t speak of anything which I am about to tell you, Severus, no one must know.”
Hmm, that sounds serious. I frown at her, all of the annoyance ebbing away. She has my interest. I push away from my desk and move to sit across from her in the second armchair, placing my elbows on my knees, leaning in.
“I promise”
She sighs, and seems to relax a little, settling herself a little further into the chair.
“I need some help with a potion.”
Well, yes, I guessed as much. I didn’t see her outside, though I did spot Potter and Remus among the students, and after she showed up in her brewing-robes, I got that. I can feel the corners of my mouth drawing themselves up into a perfect scowl.
She seems to be wasting my time.
“Actually, I need more help with getting one of the ingredients. And preparing it.” She sighs once more, giving in. “And using it, really. I just can’t do it.”
I can see the defeat shining brightly in her eyes. Leaning back into my chair, I smirk.
“And you think I can?”
Why, how flattering. I take another large gulp of my drink, and place the now empty glass on the table next to us. She nods.
“I have seen it among your ingredients. Which means you must have had a way of getting it. And seeing as it’s not there anymore, I suspect you know how to use it too.”
Right. Now I am bordering between curiosity about what it is the golden girl can’t get, and anger about her apparently breaking into my personal supplies. I opt for a stare. I am delighted she has the decency to look flustered under my gaze. Good. Summoning some more liquid into my glass, I take another sip.
“Moly” The alcohol burns as it makes its way down into my windpipe.
“What?” I manage between coughs. It takes a while before I get my breath back.
“You stupid girl! Have you any idea, any idea what it is you’re asking of me?”
She flushes and nods once more. I raise myself out of my seat and start pacing in front of her.
“What, pray tell, would you need such a thing for?”
The girl mumbles something, and I feel my anger flare.
“Speak up, witch.” I hiss. Her head snaps up, her honey eyes meet mine.
“I am working on a potion to protect a person from the cruciatus curse.”
I stop my pacing, and stare at her.
I must’ve stood there several minutes, unmoving, merely staring at her. My mind is whirling with all the possibilities, all the promises this ingredient gives her potion.
I should be jealous for her thinking of it, and I probably would’ve been if she hadn’t come to me for help. As it is, I can only applaud her decision to do so.
When I regain the use of my feet, I wrench my gaze away from hers and stalk over to the door to my chambers. I can feel her gaze following me out of the room, but I don’t really care to tell her what I’m about to do. I race through my quarters, gathering several things I need, and shrink them to fit inside my pockets. I might’ve dropped my own research years ago, I still have my notes and progress lying around.
Emerging back into my office, I walk straight to the door without looking at the girl who is anxiously awaiting my response. I open it, and bark out my command.
“Show me your notes.”
