Chapter Three- Numbness
It had been five days since Draco had woken up. Five days of endless questions that he wouldn’t answer. Everyday Snape, Dumbledore, or Madame Pomfery would bombard him with endless questions, like: ‘What happened?’ or ‘Do you know how this happened?’ and his favorite was, ‘Did you do this to yourself?’
Draco wanted nothing more than to laugh in their faces. How could they be so dumb and blind at what was lying right I front of their faces. How could they not get that he was beyond broken, that all he wanted to do was die, before ‘they’ could get to him again. The words of his dream self floated through his mind.
‘It is useless to pretend like someone will care about us, because no one does or will. We are the best kept secret, Draco. No one sees or hears our pain.’ Draco didn’t want to believe it, but looking into the eyes of the people around him, his heart sank. No one was coming to his aid, no one cared, and he was going to either end up back in ‘their’ hands, or he would have to try again; making sure to not fail once again.
“Draco?” Draco turned his head towards wall; he didn’t want to talk to Severus again. It was draining in an annoying and frustrating way. Draco, still being weak was tired easily and didn’t like to waste what energy he had left listening to his godfather pretend to care about him.
“Draco, I know you can hear me, stop acting like I am not hear, I find it rather frustrating.” Snape hated the words coming out of his mouth. They were cold spiteful words that he hoped would cause a reaction from the blond in the bed. To his disappointment, nothing happened. Draco didn’t move, didn’t speak, didn’t show any signs that the words penetrated his mind.
“Why, Draco? Why won’t you talk to me?” Snape had an idea of what had happened. The wounds he saw on the boy the nights past were to uniformed to be done on accident or as an attack from another student. But he couldn’t prove anything, wouldn’t dare bring it the blonds attention of what he thought incase he was unbelievably wrong.
Draco ignored the words spoken softly behind him. He didn’t want to hear the lies, to let someone give him false hope if there was none. He would have to try again; soon. He couldn’t take the constant bombardment of questions, the pain in knowing what was going to come when he went home. Draco felt the tears come, amazed at his ability to produce them after all the tears he had shed over the years. Why couldn’t anyone see the pain he was in?
“I’m here Draco, when you’re ready.” Draco almost laughed. He wouldn’t be here long enough to confide in him. Just as soon as he got out of this bed, he wouldn’t have to worry about anything anymore.
……………………………………………………………………………………….
Hermione hadn’t slept well since she had found Draco. All she could see when she closed her eyes was the blood, of his slumped over body, pale and skinny, bones sticky sickly out of this skin in angles any artist would have given their left foot to paint.
“Herms?” Hermione was jarred out of her thoughts and looked up to see the faces of Ron and Harry standing above her. The worried looks on their faces made Hermione wince. Quickly hiding her reaction, Hermione jumped off the common room couch and faced her worried friends.
“What’s up guys?” Harry looked questioningly at Hermione; he had been noticing her lost look lately. She looked off in space whenever she wasn’t interacting with other people, and even then she would sometimes drop out of conversation, getting a far off look in her eyes he knew all too well. Something was on her mind, and must be important or she wouldn’t have been this affected.
“We’re worried about you Hermione.” Ron spoke up. He had never seen Hermione like this. She looked tired all the time, she had even been lacking in classes that the teachers had been inquiring about her to himself and Harry this last week or so. Something had happened, and he had an inkling it had to do with the absence of one slimy git named Malfoy. Ever since the news of his hospitalization, Ron and Harry had noticed the shift in Hermione’s mood.
“Whatever for? I’m perfectly fine.” Hermione knew they didn’t believe her, she tried to walk around them, trying to change the subject, but Ron stepped in front of her blocking her path.
“Come on Hermione, we can see you aren’t fine.” Harry said, laying his hand on her shoulder. Hermione looked down, taking a large breath in, not sure if she should; or really wanted, to tell her friends of what had been on her mind.
“Does it have to do with that greasy git Malfoy?” Harry’s words made Hermione’s heart hurt. She knew that what she had been thinking wouldn’t go over well with her friends, but with the sudden heated words from Harry confirmed that she had to keep this private. Taking her pause as a confirmation, Harry went off.
“What did he do Herms? I can’t believe that even in the hospital he messes with people. Doesn’t he know when enough is enough?” Hermione shook her head and taking advantage of the two boys arguing, and moved past them; trying to keep the tears threatening to spill.
Hermione made her way down to the Great Hall, taking a seat a ways down from her fellow classmates and friends; she wasn’t in the mood to talk to anyone after the Harry and Ron debacle.
In her mind, Hermione could see the skinny and withdrawn Draco lying on the floor. Seeing the blood pooled around his body was like a reality check. It made Hermione think, for the past couple years, Draco had become less hateful and more quiet, secretive; haunted. She hadn’t realized the extent. Simply because she was happy she wasn’t hearing ‘mudblood’ ever other second. But the more Hermione thought of it, the more she realized that Draco hadn’t said that to her in a couple years; since before the war ended.
‘What other things have a not noticed?’ Hermione thought to herself. Disgusted with herself for not seeing what was right in front of her face, Hermione got up from the table without eating her food and left the hall, making her way to the Hospital wing.
Upon her arrival Hermione went straight to Madame Pomfrey’s office, not wanting to disturb her, but wanting information on Draco. Entering the office, Hermione saw that no one was there, so moving back out to the bedding area and started to look for the head healer. A whispered conversation to her left caught Hermione’s attention. As she was about to make her presence known, the words she heard stopped her.
“How is he Pomfery?” The voice could be none others then Professor Snape’s Hermione though. The next words made Hermione catch her breath.
“I’m afraid I don’t know Professor. He won’t talk, eat, and sleep. He lost so much blood when you brought him in. And-“ Pomfery hesitated on words Hermione didn’t know if she wanted to hear.
“What?” Snape demanded.
“It looked as if the cuts were self inflicted.” Hermione thought she was going to faint. What could be so bad that someone with everything would want to kill himself?
“No. You are wrong.” Snape’s words were short and sharp. You could practically feel the cold air radiating from the air around him. Hermione felt that she should introduce herself before something else happened and she was found listening to information she shouldn’t be.
“Madame Pomfery?” Hermione heard silence then the tall curtain in front of her moved and the elderly healer reveled herself. Before anything could be said, Snape followed behind and flounced out of the room with his robes flapping in the wind.
“Miss Granger. What are you doing here? You should be in classes.” Hermione blushed in embarrassment. Pomfery clucked before Hermione could say anything.
“You have five minutes, and then off to classes you go.” With that said, Pomfery went about her way to her office. Hermione nodded to no one and stood staring at the half closed curtain, uncertain of what she was going to say when she walked through them.
After a long, and deep, breath, Hermione made herself place one foot in front of the other and started to push aside the rest of the curtain. As the bed was slowly reveled, Hermione could tell that Pomfery’s words were true. One look at the occupant of the bed; you could see the dark black and purple bruises under his eyes from lack of sleep. His already thin face seemed to have caved in on itself. To Hermione he looked skeletal. She didn’t know how he could have been alive still from the look of him.
Taking the last steps toward the bed, Hermione slowly extended her hand, wanting for some unknown reason to place on top of Draco’s, which was listlessly lying on the bed by his side. Draco’s eyes were closed, but Hermione somehow knew that he was awake.
“Malfoy?”
