Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
A/N: So this is the last chapter that will be setting up Draco’s part. In the next chapter look for more Draco/Hermione interactions.
Reriddle: Sorry about the spillover, I hate when that happens in a story I am reading, I had double checked before posting but it didn’t show up on my screen but it may be b/c I have a widescreen laptop.
Atlantean_Diva: I always like it when people portray Hermione as a lighter person, I’m definitely not going to change her character completely but I don’t think she would come out of a war which her priorities in the same order as when she went in. Also, I’ll try to keep the wordiness in check; I tend to be that way while talking too, lol.

The meeting went quickly and soon Hermione was dismissing everyone.
“You coming?” Ginny asked from the doorway.
“Yeah, I’ll be along in just a minute.” Hermione replied gathering her things together. “I just need to speak to Malfoy”
“You want us to stay with you?” Ron asked, eyeing the head boy. “You know, just in case he tries something.” She opened her mouth to answer but was cut off by Draco.
“You do realize that we will be living together? You will eventually have to leave her alone with me.” Draco sneered. As head boy and girl, Hermione and Draco would be sharing a common room with their dorms off to the sides.
“I swear, if you do anything to…”Ron began.
“What am I going to do to her? Seriously Weasley, I’m not about to be expelled or give you the pleasure of seeing me lose my title for a pleasure I’m sure would be fleeting.”
Ron opened his mouth but before he could say anything Hermione grabbed his arm and dragged him out of the compartment. “Let’s go find Harry” she said, “He’s probably still with Dean and Seamus talking about Quidditch”
“Oh yeah” Ron said excitedly, “Can you believe that Seamus thinks that John Pitlick from the Harpies is a better chaser than the Cannon’s chaser?”
“The sheer nerve of some people” Hermione said soothingly while rolling her eyes towards Ginny and gently leading Ron out the door.
The trio rejoined Harry and the other Gryffindor 7th years in their compartment and sure enough they were still discussing Quidditch.
“That was fast” Harry stated.
“Yeah, Hermione is going to be a great head girl” Ron replied, “Draco didn’t do anything but sit there”
“Well I would have talked to him about that if you hadn’t decided I couldn’t take care of myself around him and started a fight’ Hermione said.
After six years of being around the two of them, Seamus, Dean and Neville could sense their fights and began to edge towards the door. Before Ron could reply however, Harry stepped in. “Did you know that Neville’s grandmother used to babysit the father the Cannons seeker?”
Successfully diverted from the argument Ron turned around to face Neville and began to interrogate him about the personal habits of the seeker.

Draco leaned his head back against the cushion after the others left the head compartment. He briefly considered getting up and going back to where his friends were gathered but decided it wasn’t worth the energy. Pansy had taken up with Nott over the summer and the two were sickeningly in love and had no problem displaying that love in front of everyone. Crabbe and Goyle didn’t care to discuss anything other than their future plans of opening a magical fix-it shop. While not the most intellectual duo they fortunately seemed to have found their niche. Give them a broken magical object, from damaged cameras to faulty Rememberalls and they’d have it back in working order in no time. Unfortunately for everyone else, the excitement of finally being good at something had not yet worn off and it was all the two were interested in discussing.
And Blaise? Well Blaise, while normally the quiet, reserved Slytherian, seemed to be in just as foul a mood as Draco himself. Not that Blaise had any right to be so pissy. He wasn’t the one having trouble sleeping. It wasn’t as though it was difficult to fall asleep, oh no, as tired as he was that was no problem. It was the dreams he had that were the problem. Dreams of searching, searching and more searching. Trying to find Her, that one girl who was supposed to make his life full and complete. Dreams that often left him more fatigued then when he went to bed. It had been this way all summer, ever since his 17th birthday, the day his Veela half had woken.
Not many people knew or even suspected as such. There were some rumors floating around in the older pureblood families but that’s all they were. Male Veela traits didn’t’ present themselves often. It was only every five generations that that the sons’ Veela sides would awaken so by the time it came around a couple hundred years had gone by since the last one and all that was left were stories.
These stories weren’t very highly regarded as fact since in the past many of the older families would lie and say they had Veela blood in them. For thousands of years it was considered a mark of prestige and power to be able to claim such. It meant that your family was more closely linked to the Earth’s magic, not just a user of magic but a source of it as well.
It had only been in the past few generations, since the rise of Voldermort and the pure-blood fanatics, that having Veela ancestors became something to be ashamed of, something to hide, for no other reason than survival.
Looking out the window Draco gave a great sigh of relief. Thankfully that git had been taken care of by Potter and his do-gooder gang just in time. He had started to worry that he would have to put himself at risk and actually take part in the war. He had seen what it had done to his parents, the only people apart from his godfather who knew what he was to become. It was why they had joined with Voldermort to begin with. Keep your enemies close and all that, find out what he had planned in an effort to undermine it. Slytherians were very good at self-preservation. They knew a losing battle, there was no way Voldermort would ever have won: he wanted too much, asked too much of his followers, punished too harshly, and rewarded too stingily. The only ones who would have never opposed him were the ones that were too scared of him, and they would have turned tail at the first sign of an actual fight.
But now it was over and done with and he could start a more important task, finding his mate. After all, a male Veela without his mate was an incomplete being. Unlike female Veelas who could find an acceptable mate fairly easily, suitable mates for male Veelas were almost as rare as male Veela's themselves.
Not that it was anything like the stories about Veelas and their mates. Historically it was believed that it was some unseen force such as destiny or fate that pulled the two halves together. It was only within the last twenty years or so that they began to learn differently. It was a Muggleborn who figured it out actually, the son of an American scientist, who turned out to be the mate of a female Veela. His sister incidentally became the mate of a male Veela. Not raised to believe in coincidence he began to research.
DNA and genetics were not things that the magical world were familiar with at the time but it seemed to be a key ingredient in what made a person an acceptable Veela mate. Since Voldermort's reach had not yet spread to the Americas, several Veelas had come forward to assist with the research. It appeared that many mates, particularly the female mates, shared certain genetic traits. It was now believed that the Veela half can instinctually tell which females will be best suited to create powerful progeny with. These specific DNA markers seemed to be rare but not so rare that is could entirely explain why mates seemed to be so scarce. They soon discovered that even if the woman had the genetic traits necessary, the Veela half would not be drawn to her unless there was something about her that would draw the wizard half as well. Basically not only did a woman need to have a genetic predisposition to being a mate, they had to have either physical or personality traits (usually both) that the wizard found attractive. Essentially she had to please two men which was obviously a mix that was quite rare.
Many male Veelas would fail to find such a mate. In these situations it wasn’t as if a Greek tragedy was taking place, the wizard didn’t slowly become more and more despondent until they finally died of a broken heart. Merely the Veela half would retreat again, going deep within and leaving behind a wizard that was more or less ordinary.
Ordinary was not something Draco Malfoy was willing to settle for.
