CHAPTER THREE
I had no sooner reached my desk when the door was flung open and Bellatrix came rushing in. "So, who is he? Come on, come on, spill!" she said with excitement.
"Severus Snape, he's the new boss." I tried to keep my voice normal but irritation had crept in as I said the words aloud.
"What's wrong? You didn't mess up already did you?"
"Thanks for the vote of confidence! No! It's just..."
"Oh for Pete's sake spit it out woman!" Bellatrix rounded on me.
"It's just that he was the jerk in the elevator and now he's my boss. I have to take his orders, run around after him all day and, and, and I'm having lunch with him later."
Bellatrix burst out laughing. "I'm sorry, but of all the people in the city you get that hot hunk of meat as your boss."
"Bellatrix, are you forgetting how much of a jerk he is? Only a little while ago you were telling me to report him and to knee him in the groin if he tried any funny business again." Of course, I couldn't tell her the thoughts that had been running through my head as I watched him walk away. The look on her face would be priceless and she would never let me live it down. She was an infamous match maker but her ways were well, let's just say, unconventional.
"He is hot though," she chirped as she winked and twirled out the room, flopping her report on my desk as she went.
I picked up the report, shook my head at her and slouched back in my chair. The clock ticked noisily above my head, causing me to look up every few minutes. 11:28, 11:34, 11:46, 11:59... tick, tick, tick. As the second hand reached twelve Severus rapped on the door and gave a small cough. "Ready?" he asked. I picked up my bag, threw my phone inside and nodded back at him as I stood up and walked around to greet him.
We didn't say a word after that until we reached the elevator. "Where are we going?" I asked a tad apprehensive about getting back in an elevator with him.
"The Italian around the corner has a nice view and food, not to mention the coffee is exquisite." He smiled warmly as the doors opened and ushered me in. Standing, arms by his side, his legs crossed, he lazily leant back and waited on the doors re-opening at the bottom. As soon as they slid apart I made to get out but he grabbed me. His hand encircled my wrist. "I'm not going to hurt you." He lowered my wrist and brushed his hand down the side, which I found rather inappropriate, I might add. I mean seriously, what was wrong with the man? One minute he is charming, the next sleazy. Ugh, how was I going to last the next hour in his company without wanting to bitch slap him?
I took a deep breathe and walked out into the dampened street. The sun was trying to break through but even that seemed like a challenge today. Only another few hours till I can go home and fall into bed, I told myself. The walk was pleasant enough, the air though damp was relatively warm and I could see the Italian restaurant just ahead. As we reached the entrance, Severus being gentlemanly, opened the door and went inside letting it swing shut on me. Jerk! I pulled it open and went to the table where he had sat down and scowled at him. "Thanks," I said through gritted teeth as the waitress came over, a bottle of red in her hand and showed it to him.
"Perfect," he said smiling at her and took the bottle. "I took the liberty of ordering while you were dallying. You don't mind do you?"
"Not at all," I replied, painting a smile on my face and taking a drink from the glass. Oh boy, it had some kick to it. Quickly I downed the rest. A little numbing would be perfect to deal with your sorry ass, I wanted to say but bit my tongue. Best to be professional in these circumstances and if I could get him talking about his agenda quickly maybe I would have time for a little shopping before heading back to the office. I'd had my eye on a beautiful pink dress and matching coat that hung in a nearby boutique and if I was lucky it would still be there after lunch. "So, what do you require from me?" I asked.
"No, no, no." Severus shook his head. "We eat first, then discuss business." The silence was almost painful. He just sat there watching, his eyes trailing across my body. I fidgeted in my seat. He sneered in victory. Well, if his intention was to make me uncomfortable, at any rate. As we ate the last remnants of the meal and finished the bottle, he pulled out his diary. "This is yours. Memorize it and follow it to the letter. I expect you to perform for me as well as you did for your previous boss and for you to always come when I need you. Is that perfectly clear?"
I jerked back. Did I just hear right? Oh hell no, I was not going to be his slave to command! "Excuse me Mr Snape, I will..."
"Great, now I will see you tomorrow bright and early with my coffee. Milk and two sugar, and call me Severus." He stood up, threw a few notes on the table and left before I could say another word.
What had just happened? I went over it in my head. At no point did I give him the impression I was to be treated with such contempt. That arrogant... my fingers wrapped tightly around the leather binding of the diary. I looked down. Printed in gold leaf was my name. I flicked it open finding today's date and skimmed over the next days schedule. Well, he might be a prize git, but by the look of it tomorrow was going to be a nice day. A couple reports were needed for completion, a few phone calls to clients to set up meetings but that was it. It was certainly a lighter schedule than I was used to. I stood and left, noting that he had at least paid for the entire meal.
The dress that had been hanging in the shop window was gone when I looked in. I crossed my fingers. Maybe the person was just trying it on, in which case there was still hope. "May I be of assistance?" a bubbly blonde asked as she bounced across to meet me.
"The dress," I pointed to where it had hung, "you wouldn't still have it by any chance?"
"I'm sorry, it was sold this morning. We do have another similar dress if you would like to see it," she offered.
"Thanks, but no. I kind of had my heart set on that one but it wasn't meant to be," I said feeling deflated. Slumping out the shop, I headed back to work.
