As Celia stood amid Weasleys Wizard Wheezes she heard a silken drawl coming from behind her. "What's that?" the voice said.
Celia turned to see the blond haired boy Scorpius staring at her. "I'm not a THAT Scorpius" she rounded on him.
"Not you, you dolt, that!" he said pointing at the snake wrapped around her shoulders.
"Oh, sorry. This is Tiny. Professor Longbottom said I could have her as my pet. Isn't she beautiful?" She raised her hand and stroked its head.
"Maybe that means you'll be going into Slytherin." He eyed the snake and raised his hand to join her in stroking the tiny beast.
Celia looked at him puzzled. "Slytherin?"
"It's one of the houses at Hogwarts. There are four of them. All my family have been Slytherins. It's the best house."
Rose snickered beside him. "No it's not! Everyone knows the best house is Gryffindor, where the brave of heart go."
Scorpius sneered. "Sure, if all you have is brawn and no intellect!" He turned to Celia again. "As I was saying, there are four houses. Slytherin, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. Nobody wants to be a Hufflepuff!" He shook at the thought. Celia giggled at him. "We'll be getting the train up to Hogwarts tomorrow. You're welcome to join me in my carriage if you like, unless you'd rather sit with Rose." He eyed her carefully. "Anyway, check out Hogwarts A History, you'll see why Slytherin house is the best." He dipped low, turned and left.
"I think you have an admirer" Rose said, watching his retreat.
Celia smiled. "Maybe the love potion wasn't necessary after all then" she winked and tittered as Rose led her across to her father. "Actually, I think he was more curious about Tiny." The thought of someone admiring her was ridiculous. How could they? Winner of the Miss Lollipop Universe, that was her. Still it did play at the edges of her thoughts. Could her appearance be changing slightly? she was so familiar with her looks that perhaps she couldn't see the changes that were beginning to take place. Nah, wishful thinking.
"Dad this is Celia, Celia, Mr Weasley" Rose said.
"Nice to meet you Mr Weasley." Celia stuck out her hand to shake his but he grabbed her into a tight embrace.
"Call me Ron. I'm sure we'll be seeing a fair bit of each other. I could teach you a few spells to get rid of that prat if you'd like" he said eyeing Scorpius .
"Ronald don't you dare!" Hermione said appearing out of nowhere.
Ron's ears turned slightly red as he grinned widely and mumbled under his breath "furnunculus" and made a small swish and flick action with his fingers.
Hermione rolled her eyes. "You are incorrigible."
OoO
Neville dropped Celia off at The Leaky Cauldron. "I'll pick you up at ten. That'll give you enough time to get ready before catching the train." He nodded once and opened the door to her room. Yawning, Celia entered it and threw her parcels down. "Goodnight Celia" Neville said as he closed the door behind her.
Exhausted, she crossed to her bed and flopped down, not bothering to get changed. She doubted if she would have the energy to do so anyway. Closing her eyes she let the dark take hold behind her eyelids. Blond hair, mischievous smile. She turned on her side. "There are four houses at Hogwarts" a voice in her head said. She tossed several more times. Each time, something new would pop into her mind. It wasn't all that surprising since entering her new life she had side-along apparated with her Professor, met a nice family and befriended the daughter Rose, got a pet which her mother would never have allowed, got her very own wand and on top of all that she was going to be an apprentice for the wandmaker. Ahhh! There was no way she was going to get any sleep.
As her eyes flew open she reached for one of the parcels. From the feel of it she could tell that it contained her books and proceeded to tear the wrapping off. She noticed at the foot of her bed was a trunk which she was suddenly grateful for considering she'd just shredded the wrapping and would have had to carry the books loose otherwise. Oops. Note to self, think before you act. Grabbing the books that she wanted from the pile she decided that now would be a good time to pack everything away. It would give her more reading time and she'd be able to have a long lie in. Leaning across the bed she grabbed the trunk. In it she placed her cauldron, books and quills, a few vials, a telescope, a set of scales, and her clothes. She left out her wand, A History Of Magic and The Standard Book Of Spells. With everything packed away she closed the trunk and climbed into bed.
Being new to this life she wanted to learn everything she could and began reading. She found it fascinating that so many witches and wizards had been living right under her nose and she never knew. She flipped the pages, gleaning titbits about famous witches and wizards. There was one wizard she found herself constantly laughing at. "He would have been a right character" she thought as she read the article on Albus Dumbledore.
She closed the book and stretched out her hand, wrapping her fingers around the ebony wood. If felt wonderful to hold, as though somehow her body had been longing for it and was finally awarded with its grace. With her other hand she grabbed the book of spells and flipped it open. There were all sorts of spells from knockback jinxes to wand lighting ones and as it was already fairly dark she thought it prudent to try and learn that one first.
She took the wand firmly yet gently in her hand and traced the shape in the air. It reminded her of a fast "and" sign and as she traced it around and around she thought "loo-mos." Her wand began to glow and before long her room was filled with a blinding light. "Yay, I did it, I did it!" she squealed. She wasn't sure if she would have got the pronunciation right had she spoken the spell but she had always been good at getting words right in her head.
By the time morning came she had tried out several more spells with varying degrees of success. Her favourite was a levitation charm. She had been having lots of fun with it for hours and hadn't realized the time until a knock on the door caught her attention. Peering at her watch it read 10:00 am. Yikes, where had the night gone? "Be there in a minute!" she yelled at the door.
"Don't take too long, you have a train to catch" Neville shouted back through the wood.
Celia quickly stripped and ran to the sink. She threw some water on her face before giving herself a quick wipe over. Satisfied that she was clean she grabbed fresh clothes and tossed everything else except her wand into the trunk.
"Ready?" Neville asked as she approached him with her trunk floating slightly ahead.
"Yep" she said barely containing her excitement. "Neville, Professor Dumbledore was at Hogwarts when you were there wasn't he?"
"Yes" Neville smiled.
"What was he like?"
Neville told her of the way he could command a room by just being in it and how he loved weird words and muggle sweets. How he had been someone you could rely on to keep a confidence and how he was loyal to the school, those who worked for him and those he watched over. He explained that there was a time when things were very dark and his reputation had been called into question but that he never wavered in his loyalty to the people. "Most of all" he said, "he believed in the power of love."
"He sounds really nice."
"He was. I think you would have liked him" Neville said.
In all the time he had been talking, Celia hadn't noticed that Neville had carried her trunk and that they had just walked through a solid wall. That is, until she was facing the steam train that said Hogwarts Express on the front and she looked back to see where she had just come from.
"It helps if you don't think about it" Neville said and winked at her.
"Celia! over here!" a shrill voice screamed along the platform.
Celia's eyes lit up as she spotted Rose running towards her.
Neville dipped into his pocket and pulled out a small handful of wizard money and a train ticket. "Here this'll get you some munchies for the train ride, hold onto your ticket and I'll see you when you get to Hogwarts." He handed her the trunk and gave her a gentle nudge towards Rose. Before she could protest Neville turned on the spot and headed back through the wall.
OoO
After waving to the Weasleys Celia turned and opened the carriage door. It was comfortable looking, not like the ones she was used to that were generally packed so tight that breathing was more an option than a necessity. This carriage was empty. It had a luggage rack above the long seats that sat opposite each other and the seat pads were soft looking, ideal for a long journey. She noted however, that there didn't appear to be anywhere she could plug in an adapter and as her ipod was almost out of battery she sighed. It wasn't like she listened to it very often but sometimes it helped her escape when the teasing got too much. She grabbed her trunk and hoisted it above her head. The higher she pushed it the more off balance she got until standing on her tiptoes, tongue sticking out the corner of her mouth, she toppled over.
Scorpius burst out laughing "Is that your favourite position?" he asked, holding onto his sides.
"You'd think, wouldn't you!" Celia giggled. It seemed that this was fast becoming her greeting card where he was concerned. Taking note she mentally added another spell to learn on her list of things to do.
"Here let me give you a hand." He reached down and gently taking her hand helped her to her feet. He grabbed the trunk and placed it on the rack. Turning, he smiled "Did you read Hogwarts A History?"
"No, I got distracted with another couple books. Rose has a copy though, so I'll borrow it to read on the way up."
Scorpius controlled his face. He felt disappointed that she wouldn't be riding with him but silently hoped that she would instead be joining his house. Technically he hadn't been sorted into it yet but it was fairly good odds that he would be a Slytherin. "Well enjoy your journey." He turned and gave Rose a small nod before departing for a carriage a couple doors down.
Teddy peered in as Rose took her seat by the window. "He's not harassing you is he?" He jerked his head in Scorpius direction.
"Not at all. Actually he was being very helpful, which reminds me, Rose can I borrow your Hogwarts A History book? I'd really like to know a little about the houses before we get to the school."
"Well if he gives you any trouble..."
"I'll deduct a thousand points from his house" Victoire winked. Teddy gave her a quick kiss, dipped his head and rushed off the train as the doors began to close and the train gave a loud honk. Bidding them goodbye, Victoire headed off to the prefects carriage.
With the train under way Celia slouched back and looked out the window. She wasn't sure what Hogwarts was like and the thought of not being in the same house as Rose filled her with dread.
"What you really need to know about the houses is this..." Rose said rousing Celia from her reverie, "Gryffindor is the best." Celia giggled as the carriage door slid open and a cute boy with unruly jet black hair sidled in.
"I wondered where you had got to" Rose said smiling at the boy.
"James" he replied as if that explained everything.
Rose shook her head. "Albus this is Celia, Celia this is my cousin Albus it's his first year at Hogwarts too."
"Hi!" Celia said giving him a friendly smile.
"I was just telling Celia that the only house she'd want to be in is Gryffindor." Albus blanched at the words. "Oh Albus, just ignore James. He's only pulling your leg."
"I know but what if I am..." he gulped unable to finish the sentence.
"So, the houses are Slytherin and Gryffindor..." Celia started, trying to find out more and help poor Albus get a little colour back in his cheeks. Poor thing looked so scared.
"Yes, Slytherin, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. Each house values something particular. Gryffindor values bravery, daring, nerve and chivalry; Slytherin it's cunning, resourcefulness and ambition; Ravenclaw it's intelligence, knowledge and wit and Hufflepuff it's loyalty, fair play and hard work" she prattled off.
"Well I don't think Gryffindor is for me. I can't even watch horror movies without my teddy to cover my eyes" Celia said.
Rose burst out laughing. "Well the sorting hat" she looked at Celia's bewildered face, "it's been bewitched" she said. "When you get called up to the front to try it on it looks deep within you and decides. So, I wouldn't worry too much if you get scared at horror movies. It's what you are deep down that the hat sees."
Celia pondered for a moment. "Ravenclaw sounds nice. I wouldn't mind being seen as clever and it's not a bad thing to be ambitious and resourceful. All the houses sound really good to me."
Rose looked at her as though she had two heads while Albus looked questioningly at her. The way she described Slytherin made it sound not too bad if he did get put there regardless of what his father had said about being able to choose. He hoped it was true but was glad that he was no longer terrified at the prospect.
"Anything from the trolley?" the hostess called along the narrow corridor. Celia whipped out her money and looked at it befuddled. She had no idea what anything was or it's worth.
"Here, let me help." Albus nudged up and explained the money. "This one is a sickle" he said pointing a silver coin. "It's worth 29 knuts, that's the bronze ones and that gold one is a galleon. 17 sickles make a galleon. Do you want me to help you choose from the trolley?" he offered.
Celia nodded, grateful that she wouldn't make a complete fool out of herself. She didn't think she would ever get used to this new currency. An even 100 for every kind of coin in the muggle world made sense to her but the varying values of these made her head hurt to just think about.
She stood up and crossed to the trolley. There were all sorts of weird and wonderful sweets on it. There were chocolate frogs, Freddos were as close as she could relate though they had a collectors card inside of them from what the box said. That might be a good thing to collect, she mused. She bought a few frogs and had a look at the other delights on display. Berty Botts every flavour beans seemed like revels but in jelly bean form instead of chocolate, she bought a few of those and a few long jelly worms. Albus took the money from her and paid the witch to save her any embarrassment and then bought his own sweets and a couple pumpkin juices. All in all they had quiet a hoard between them.
"Be careful when you open the box" Rose said as they climbed back into their seats and dropped the goodies in the middle.
Celia looked at her with a puzzled look on her face. It was only a chocolate what did she think would "ohh!" she exclaimed as the frog leapt out the box and hopped away. Okay, not quite a Freddo. She picked up the box retrieving the card from within and looked at it.
"That's Severus Snape" Rose said peering over her shoulder. "Albus was named after him" she said. Celia eyed the man as he strolled into the picture and glared out. There was something about him that drew her to him. Maybe it was the eyes or the way he was dressed all in black and very devilish. Rose gaped at her. "Seriously Celia, you have got to get better taste in your men!" Celia blushed and put the card down noticing a small smirk cross Severus' face before he wandered out the picture to leave nothing but an empty frame.
They sat and ate and discussed what they thought Hogwarts would look like. Each as eager as the other, full of anticipation and excitement. After a while Rose stood up and stretched out. It was getting dark and she knew they would be arriving shortly at the station. "I think you should go get ready. We'll be pulling into Hogsmeade soon" she told them.
Celia eyed her trunk and stood up. "Let me" Scorpius said as he spotted her reaching up. Rose rolled her eyes.
"Thanks" Celia said and whipped out her uniform. She hurried out the carriage and headed along to the bathroom to change hoping she wouldn't drop anything down the toilet in her haste. She needn't have worried though, like everything in the wizarding world the bathroom had been adapted to their needs. It was wide enough to allow her to strip comfortably without having to squish up against the toilet and had a shelf that was suited to holding all of her uniform. There was even a special holder for her wand. She had never seen a bathroom like it, especially not on a train.
So far, being a witch was a very good decision.
