Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
AN: Thanks to everyone who read and Reviewed or Rated. I love this story, so far. I've got some fun stuff planned and it should move rather quickly. I hope no one is disappointed in the way it's going, but I have to set up some stuff, before the good parts come along. Enjoy!
moodysavage: Malfoy's motivations will come with the story, so I don't want to give away too much here. Neville will find his way into the story, in his own good time. Patience.
Janna: I hate to put children in the middle of their parent's problems. I blame JK Rowling, for her part by writing the epilogue.
Green_eye_lover: I have no feelings for Ginny, whatsoever. I just never felt Rowling established their love in her story, so I go out of my way to get around it. Here's your second course, so enjoy.
Hotflower901: Thank you. Hope this meets previous expectations.
unneeded: the curse had many effects, that one seems to be a side thing. Malfoy men never seemed to be able to express their feelings toward one another. Here is one of those changes in the WW that I warned you about, so no blaming Draco for it, Kay?
Chapter Three: Return to England
Arthur Weasley woke to an intense need. He rushed about his morning rituals, leaving before Molly had even woke up and skipping her hearty morning meal. He arrived at his office and searched his paperwork for the legal papers he remembered from the day before.
It was a bit of sticky legislation that he knew had to be snuck in early if he was to make sure that it passed into Wizarding law without debate. He was Minister for Merlin's sake, he would make things right and make sure that the Pure-Bloods didn't ever gain rule over this world again. No future Dark Lord would ruin his world while Arthur was in charge.
The bill was laid out before him, just a few addendums to make that would ensure it was leak-proof. His family would be fine, he could make them the first to be re-certified under the new regime. That would make the arbiters think before accusing him of favoritism. He put his quill into the ink well and signed the document, blotting his signature with the official Ministry tool. This would take a lot to overthrow and the Wizangamut would try for months to undo it, but by then he would have managed to work the most troublesome families into a frenzy.
Arthur sighed as he sat back and picked up his wand. "Miss Bones? Could you come in here, please?" he called to his new young secretary.
Susan entered and crossed to the Minister's desk. "You called me, Minister Weasley?" she asked.
"Yes. I have this document to file. Would you take it to records, please? Make it fast, it's very important."
Susan took the rolled up parchment and nodded, rushing out of the office and into the lifts. She made no detours as she delivered the Minister's declaration to its proper department. Once there, it went into the files and the law became part of the Wizarding Legal System. She was on her way back to the office when the effects of the law began to flow out to the population. It didn't effect her, because Susan's wedding was scheduled for later that summer.
The law, which negated all marriages to currently living couples, until they underwent a purification ritual to prove that the union was based on natural love, not potions, spells or contractual obligations, was intended to rip apart Pure-blood families and force them to flounder until they could fight it, or find another that they loved. It was the masterpiece of Justin Finch-Fletchely, after he was thwarted from marrying a woman because of her family's blood purity stance.
Under the conditions of the law, all marriages were void until the purification was done and all children conceived would be considered bastards until it was finished. It would take months for this to go through, and in the meantime, no babies would be conceived by the more pure families, on the chance that an heir would be born suspect. It also regulated all future marriages until the couple could prove that they were in love, and wanted the union.
Ginny was coiled up next to Oliver when she felt the odd wrenching of her magical core. It wasn't a bad feeling, but it was somewhat rejuvenating. She felt safe and free, like she hadn't felt for so long, since childhood in fact. She snuggled closer, pressing her belly up to the back of her lover and noting the way it felt where they touched.
She had told Oliver of her condition, that she was carrying his baby, and thought she could convince Harry that it was his, but the Falmouth Falcons' player had told her that the best thing for everyone was to come clean. They would go to Harry, when he came home, and confess everything. Maybe they could salvage what was left of their lives and try to come to better terms in the future. It was the best they could hope for and then the baby could know who its true parents were. She had her doubts, but then she had a lot of those lately.
Fleur was nursing her latest child, Louis, and her thoughts were heavy. She and Bill had lost something, and she was sure it was her fault. She had wanted children so badly, that she had gotten pregnant as often as her body was able, and now Bill seemed to avoid her whenever he was home. It was as if she were no longer attractive to him, Veela blood notwithstanding.
When he returned, she was going to try to prove to him that she was still the girl he'd married and that was when the law's effects struck her.
Her body lurched with the force of it, and the tiny boy in her arms jumped as well. It was as if her creature blood was thrown into a fit of primal surge. She suddenly felt a need so strong that she couldn't even think about what she had to do. She rushed to the floo and called out to her sister-in-law, who was having her own appocolyptic experience, at the time.
"What is it, Fleur?" Hermione asked.
"Can you come and watch the children for me? It's an emergency." she said and Hermione agreed. Within minutes, the muggle-born witch was coming through and Fleur was gone. Hermione held little Louis, as Victoire and Dominique came in from their play.
"Where's Mama?" The eldest asked.
"She had some errands to run. Don't worry. Auntie Hermione is here to take care of things."
The children shrugged and left, as Hermione put Louis to bed and went about preparing lunch for the others. Her own feelings made her numb, as she had felt the lurching just before Fleur had called and was now stumbling around trying to figure out what had happened.
Lucius and Narcissa were in the middle of some very important potions brewing when they felt the snap of their marriage like a cut lifeline. They turned to each other and gasped, realizing too quickly what had happened and unsure of what it meant. Lucius hugged his, well – his love, and pet her hair gently. "I'll tell Draco. He'll know what to do."
The former Malfoy patriarch found his son, he took a deep breath due to what that meant for now, in the formal sitting parlor, with Astoria Greengrass. He cleared his throat and waited as they concluded the visit and his son bid the girl goodbye. He turned back to his father and tilted his head. Lucius stepped forward and took another deep breath.
"Something has ended the marriage bond between your mother and I. I beleive it could only be an official act, possibly in retribution to our family. It may effect your standing as head of the family, but it will definitely be a detriment to us all."
"I'll find out about it immediately." Draco said and the older man sighed.
"We'll be in the potions lab. You'll tell us as soon as you know?" he asked and Draco nodded. The man left and Draco went to his desk to write to his solicitors.
In Africa, the effects of the law were not as strong, but both men felt them, just the same. It was fifteen hours before the portkey would activate and they were feeling as if their foundations had snapped. Bill was already out of sorts, from the realization of his ancestor's liability. The law made him into the unfocused lost soul that Harry was forced to deal with until they could return home.
When the portkey was nearly ready, Harry had arranged their things, strapped them to their backs and was holding Bill on his lap, like a child that needed his mother. The small porcelain box, a strangely fragile thing to make into a portkey, was in his hand and he held Bill's hand over it with his other. The magic took them, sending them home where who knew what would greet them.
They landed on the lawn of Malfoy Manor, a heap of bruised and confused wizards that got up and brushed themselves off. Harry patted Bill's back and said, "Are you alright?" but got only a nod of answer. He led them into the house, hoping to find Lucius is a good mood.
Said Malfoy was waiting in his office, sitting behind a desk and glaring at three vials of potions in front of him, as if they were the fault of all his worries. He looked up when the two arrived and smiled fondly. "Ah, Misters Weasley and Potter. I was expecting you. Come in, won't you? I'm sorry that I can't offer you something, but our house elves, you understand. And Cissy is otherwise occupied."
"It's okay, Mr. Malfoy. We just came to deliver your property." Harry said and Bill reached into his pack and pulled out the vase. It was unharmed by their arrival, thanks to the special properties of the pack, and looked like the priceless heirloom that it was. He placed it on the desk, as Lucius moved the vials out of the way and Bill stepped back.
"Perfect. It's just as the family history describes it. Did you know it was a birthday present from the emperor of China, to my great-grandfather?"
"Yes." Harry began but Bill cut him off.
"We know exactly what it is. It was found with this." he said as he handed Malfoy the parchment. Lucius read the letter and looked up, his eyes curious, but not angry. Bill went on. "I want to forego my part of the reward money, in partial retribution. My family is to blame. I can't take money for removing a curse that was their fault."
"That's nonsense. You didn't cast . . ."
"No, but I've profited from it." Bill finished.
"Mr. Malfoy. I'll forego my part as well. For my wife . . ." but Harry couldn't finish. "For Ginny Weasley." he said and that felt more natural.
"So, it's effected you, as well." Lucius said. "Very well. I'll be happy to pay you, but if you insist, I can only say that I am thankful for the return of this vase and the breaking of the ancient curse on my family. Now, if my son can solve the newest problem, then perhaps we can begin to move forward."
Harry and Bill left and headed to their respective homes. Bill to Shell Cottage, where he and Fleur had decided to make their permanent home, and Harry to the house in Godric's Hollow where he and Ginny had settled. Bill found Hermione there, at wits end and no Fleur to be found.
In Godric's Hollow, Ginny was waiting with a guilty looking Oliver Wood by her side.
