A/N Thank the muses, they like this story. I will probably be writing consistantly up until the end of the Sorting, then my well of current ideas will dry up. If I happen to drill a new idea well, I will continue. Anyways, here we go!
I turn to see the unfortunately familiar face of one Ron Weasley. Behind him were three other redheads whom I can safely assume are his brothers.
"Can I help you?" I ask with a raised eyebrow.
"Yeah, you can. I plan to beat the bloody hell out of you and Malfoy here, so you can help me by taking your beating," Weasley sneered.
Vincent, Gregory, and Draco stood up and walked out in the cooridor with me.
"Is that a fact? Well, you will find that to be a little difficult, seeing as we outnumber you. We also are likely smarter, faster, and stronger than you. Do you really want to push this issue? Especially before the school year even starts?" I question politely.
With a wordless growl he launches himself at me. I sidestep and slap his back, propelling him into a compartment door. He rights himself and trys again. Once again, I sidestep, only this time I put a foot out and trip him. Every time I sidestep him, he gets angrier and angrier. Draco, Greg, and Vince were standing by watching the proceedings with mild interest. They all knew my reflexes and were just waiting. The redhead makes one more lunge at me. I was getting bored with this. I grab his arm as he nears me, and I twist it behind his back.
"I am faster than you will ever be, just quit trying. You will never hit me and in this position if you continue to struggle you will break your own arm. Are you done?"
Weasley was behaving like an enraged animal. Sick of his bellowing I slam my forhead against the back of his skull and knock him out. I look around and realize we had a crowd. When they realized that the fight was over, they all cheered. At least until an annoyed Sly peeks his head out of my shoulder bag and hisses grumpily. I look at his brothers with a raised eyebrow. They just stand there looking sheepish, and one couldn't stop looking anxiously at Sly. I look pointedly at Draco and walk into the compartment. Not more than a couple seconds behind me, Draco turns on his heel and follows. Vince and Greg follow him. I slide the door closed and decide to ignore everyone on the other side of it.
"So what was that about?" Vince asks, absently petting Sly.
"Long story short, Weasley tried to start something with Draco earlier in the summer. I stepped in, got punched. I shoved him away and told him to stay away from my friends. He has vowed retribution against me for not being able to beat Draco to a bloody pulp. What you have just seen was his idea of exacting revenge," I explain simply.
"I see," Greg says shortly.
"Yes. We should get ready. We should be there before long, and we don't want to have to rush," I say wearily.
All three of them nod, and start pulling their robes on. I coax Sly back into his bag, and slip into my own robes. A few moments later the snack cart rolls by, and we all get a few snacks to munch on before we get to the school.
"Oh, this is going to be a fun year at school. Classmates, studies, and annoying red heads. Oh, my!" Draco mutters sarcastically.
I nod my head at him.
"We can handle the idiot. The rest will be a breeze,"
We sit in silence, each lost in our own thoughts for the rest of the ride. Before long we feel the train start to slow down, and finally stop. We all stand and make our way back off the train. We are greeted by a downpour and an insanely large man waving a lantern around.
"Firs' Years! Firs' Years over here!"
"Guess we follow him," Draco drawls with some contempt.
Crabbe, Goyle, and I just shrug and follow Draco.
The giant man leads all the first years to these rickety looking little boats with lanterns on them.
"Are these even sea worthy?" Draco leans close to ask me.
"I guess," I shrug.
With a doubtful look, Draco climbs as gracefully as possible, which isn't all that gracefully at all. I climb in after him. Once we are all seated the giant man roars 'Forward!' and all the boats move as one. The boats slide soundlessly across the water, and the castle comes into view. I have been inside some impressive structures, but this surpasses them all. We sit in stunned silence as we slowly draw closer to the castle. With a small bump the boats come to a stop at the opposite shore of the lake. With a short scramble we disembark the crafts and start walking quickly towards the huge castle doors. We are all freezing cold and shivering. We had all just gotten under the cover of the castle when the doors opened. A stern looking witch stood there, eyeing us all as we dripped on the floor. With a muttered spell and a wave of her wand we are all magically dry again. I sigh, happy to be warm again.
"Hello. My name is Professor McGonagall. You have already met out Gameskeeper, Rubeus Hagrid. Welcome to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please follow me so we can get you sorted into your Houses. There are four Houses here at Hogwarts. They are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin," the stern witch, Professor McGonagall, greets us.
The doors open of their own accord to reveal a huge hall lit by floating candles and lined with long tables under a House flag, one line of tables for each house. In the front of the hall sits another line of tables where several adults sit, presumably the teachers and Headmaster. The entire hall is packed with people. Professor McGonagall walks to the teacher's table and comes back with a four legged stool. A short wizard with a shock of white hair sits a battered, frayed, and very dirty hat on the stool. The wide brim opens as if the hat is taking a breath, and with a clear voice (can a hat have a voice?) started to sing.
"Oh you may not think me pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.
There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
if you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends.
So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!"
"Hannah Abbot!" Professor McGonagall calls out.
Hannah walks forward, and the hat is placed on her head.
"HUFFLEPUFF!" the hat screams.
Hannah walks to the table that was waving her over.
One by one every kid walked forth to get Sorted. Bones, Susan turns out to be a Hufflepuff. Boot, Terry goes into Ravenclaw. Brocklehurst, Mandy also goes into Ravenclaw. Brown, Lavender goes into Gryffindor. Bulstrode, Milicent goes into Slytherin. Corner, Michael goes into Ravenclaw. Crabbe, Vincent of course goes into Slytherin. Finnigan, Seamus goes into Gryffindor. Goldstein, Anthony goes Ravenclaw. Goyle, Gregory also, of course, goes into Slytherin. Granger, Hermione goes into Gryffindor. Greengrass, Daphne goes into Slyterin. Longbottom, Neville goes into Gryffindor. I am almost falling asleep on my feet, lulled by the repetition, when Draco's name is called.
I pay closer attention when Draco comes up in line. The hat barely touches his blonde hair before it screams. "Slytherin!!" Draco walks off proud, his father is going to be very happy with him. I zone out a little as the rest of the kids are sorted before me. There were four behind me, and five in front of me.
McDougal, Morag goes into Ravenclaw. Theodore Nott is put in Slytherin. I know of him through Draco, he is a rather quiet guy but nice enough. Pansy Parkinson goes into Slytherin as well. I also know of her, she is a total bitch and both Draco and I give her a wide berth. A set of twins are up next. One, Parvati Patil, goes into Gryffindor. Her sister, Padma Patil, goes into Ravenclaw. I am next.
"Snape, Abraxus!" Professor McGonagall calls for me finally.
I step up to the hat and she puts it on my head.
"Hmmm, you are quite the interesting one, aren't you? Harry Potter is your true name, but Sparrow is who you are. Your true parents were Gryffindors, but your Father is a Slytherin. Head of House in fact. You have double loyalties, where to put you? Where do you think?" the hat whispers to me.
"I don't remember my true parents, and have no loyalties to them. All of my friends are in Slytherin, and my father is the Head of House. I would like to be in Slytherin, if you would be so kind," I whisper back.
"So polite, thats what I like about you properly brought up children. You know respect," the hat whispers.
From atop my head it screams "Slytherin!"
I walk over to where Draco, Greg, and Vince were waiting for me. Each of them nod slightly to me. Some would think this as a cold greeting, but I could see the warm welcome and excitement in their eyes. One more Gryffindor is Sorted, Dead Thomas; and one more Ravenclaw, Lisa Turpin. Finally the red headed terror is Sorted. I had no doubt where he would go, and I wasn't wrong. He got Sorted in with the rest of the hotheaded Gryffindors. Blaise Zambini finished off the Sorting for this year's new students.
The Headmaster stands and motions for silence. The entire hall quiets for him.
"Thank you. Welcome to another year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You all seem to be hungry, so dig in!" He waves his hands and food magically appears.
Those of us raised in homes with house elves aren't that surprised. We could hear ooohs and aaaahs from other tables. With a barely supressed eye roll Draco and I start filling our plates. We all eat until we can't eat anymore and are relaxing on our seats.
"Now that we are all full and sleepy I think it is a good time to sing the school song before bed. One, two, three!" and he launches into song.
"Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts,
Teach us something, please,
Whether we be old and bald
Or young with scabby knees,
Our heads could do with filling
With some interesting stuff,
For now they're bare and full of air,
Dead flies and bits of fluff,
So teach us things worth knowing,
Bring back what we've forgot,
Just do your best, we'll do the rest,
And learn until our brains all rot"
Most of the kids sing along, not all in tune, but with enthusiasm.
"Well done, well done. Well off to bed with you. Prefects, bubble bugs, balderdash, pig snout, and wattlebird,"
"That man is insane," Draco slowly drawls.
I nod sleepily and follow him as he follows the prefects.
A/N Well, what do you think of the Sorting? One comment, I believe the First Years are given towels or blankets after the trip across the lake in the first book. I figured a spell would be so much more efficient. School song, Sorting Hat song, and full list of student names researched from HP-Lexicon.org and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
