Hermione smelt something. Her heart began to race, and the thirst she felt multiplied. She ran towards it. It was taking her over, yet she still kept a grip on reality due to his presence. She knew he was following her, and she didn't mind. It was soothing. The source of the smell was getting clearer.
She ran faster and finally found it. There was someone hiking out in these woods. Without even thinking Hermione launched herself at him, biting his neck. She drank it in, loving the texture and taste. What used to smell metallic, now smelt like a nectar sent straight from the gods.
The one thing Hermione didn't expect was how good it would feel. Drinking blood was almost enough to send her over the edge. It was heavenly. She didn't think she'd ever want to stop. She could smell him near her again, but she didn't pay much attention. She was focused on feeding.
Snape placed his hand on Hermione's shoulder. She didn't acknowledge it. He tighten his grip. "Hermione, you'll kill him." Hearing those words snapped her out of it. She dropped the unconscious body and horror washed over her as she realized what she had done. "I..." Snape simply nodded. "It's all right Hermione. You didn't kill him. He won't remember. You're fine." He reassured her. She nodded.
"I feel full, yet still thirsty. Grrrrr." Hermione looked around, searching for something else. She smelt another creature and ventured towards it. It was a deer. "Can I?" she asked Snape for permission. He nodded, "You won't have to hold back." She nodded, feeling her mouth became painfully dry at the sight of her next meal. She lunged and caught it swiftly, sinking her teeth into she began to feed. It wasn't as good on the human, but it would definitely do just fine. She finished then wiped her mouth with her hand.
"I'm all set for now Professor. What should I do? Or we do?" She asked, unsure of what was going to happen.
Snape shifted uncomfortably for a moment. "Hermione, call me Severus. You're no longer my student." She nodded and said his name. "Severus." It practically rolled off her tongue perfectly. Smiling, Hermione took a step toward him. She cocked her head. "Why aren't you afraid of me?" She asked, genuinely curious.
Severus smiled, "I've seen darkness and evil my entire life. I am not afraid."
Hermione's face fell. "So I'm evil? I'm darkness?" She was hurt. Dumbledore said there was still a chance for her, for her soul. But Severus now was making it sound like she would be lost forever. Which was it?
Severus shook his head, "I don't know. I suppose you can be whatever it is you choose. Your opinion would reflect on your beliefs of death and the afterlife. I, for one, don't believe."
Hermione contemplated this. She knew she had a soul. She learned that while growing up as a good little Christian girl. But Christians don't believe in magic, so where did that leave her? Was she really soulless? Lost to wander the earth for all eternity. She hoped not. She'd be terribly lonely.
"Severus, can I have my wand?" she asked him. He looked unsure then handed it to her. She tried casting a patronus charm, but it failed. Frustrated, she tried again. Still nothing. Hermione was on the verge of hysterics. Her magic wasn't working!
"Hermione, calm down." Severus spoke before she completely lost it. "Your human memories aren't strong enough anymore. You'd need a new memory of happiness." She frowned. "Try something else, one not based off emotions." He suggested.
Hermione nodded and said "Langlock!" Snape was shocked when he found his tongue was now glued to the roof of his mouth. What a cheeky witch he thought, smiling. After a moment, she muttered "Finite Incantatem."
Snape took in a deep breath. "Using one of my own spells on me." He laughed. "You caught my surprise. Good job." He was indeed impressed. She performed the spell he invented perfectly.
Hermione looked around, "So what now?" Snape contemplated for a moment before answering. "Well, I know Dumbledore wants us to spend the summer together so we can hone your skills, but unfortunately I have some matters I need to discuss. Will you be able to survive the summer alone? You can stay either at your home or the castle. I'll be back three weeks before Term starts back up. If you have problems, you can be sure to floo or owl me."
Hermione nodded, trying not to show her disappointment. She thought she would get to know him better so they could become friends, but he was just leaving her, on her own, to deal with all of this. How could he betray her? Hermione simply nodded her head, "Thanks Professor Snape. See you then." With that, she apparated back to her parents home.
Her parents.. She had to go find them, give them back their memories. But maybe they were better off not knowing about her. She decided she would find them tomorrow, and see them for herself. If they looked happy.. she wouldn't let herself get in the way. Her parents would probably blame themselves for what she did, and she didn't want them to bear that burden.
Hermione spent the day cleaning up her parents home, especially her room. She tried to remember what it had been like living her, but the memories were still a bit fuzzy. She remembered important things, the specific memories that shaped her into who she was, but other than that, it was mostly a blank. After that it was dark out. Hermione knew she didn't need to sleep anymore, but decided she would give it a go.
About twenty minutes later, she gave up on that feat. To try and pass the time Hermione popped in a DVD she found in her living room. The Notebook was always worth a good cry. She figured since she couldn't cry it'd be no big deal. Wrong again. Hermione was in hysterics shaking. That film broke her heart, even when it no longer beat.
After walking around the house, flipping through her books, and listening to music. Hermione decided it was time she would get ready to find her parents. She already had their address. She took a deep breath before deciding she would set off.
