“So let me see if I understand you correctly,” Dolores Umbridge said in her sickly sweet tone as she set her tea on her desk. She was speaking to the student-hated caretaker, Argus Filch. “You believe Mr Potter is regularly sleeping with Miss Granger within the school grounds because your cat told you she can smell that Miss Granger is with child?”
“That's exactly it, Ma'am,” Filch smirked proudly. Said cat, Mrs Norris, was wrapped in his arms purring as he scratched her head. “Haven't caught them in the act yet, but, mark me, when I do, the pair of them will be expelled faster than you can say 'Dungbomb'.”
“That's if it is true,” Umbridge cut in. “Though it does explain some of Mr Potter's behaviours, we are still going off the... words of an animal.”
“My Mrs Norris isn't some animal. Are you my sweet?” He cooed to the purring cat. Her large lamp yellow eyes seemed to smile at him before turning with a glare towards Umbridge.
“Be that as it may, we would need solid evidence before bringing this news into the public and seeing to the proper punishments delivered.”
“I bet Weasley knows,” Filch offered after moment's thought.
“Weasley? The one in the same year as them?”
“Yes, Ma'am. Those three were as thick as thieves since their first year. Kind of strange he's not around them this year, isn't it?”
“Yes. Very curious, indeed. Though it may be argued Mr Weasley simply has enough sense to see through Mr Potter's lies.”
Filch chuckled, “Not Weasley; he's Potter's faithful lap dog. The only other time he's left was when Potter's name came out of the goblet last year 'cause he was jealous. And that didn't last a month. It's almost Halloween and he's still not talking to either of them.”
“I see,” Umbridge paused with a thoughtful expression. “I will be having a word with Mr Weasley after Monday's class. Until I get the evidence I need to expel Mr Potter and his little girlfriend, I need you to remain quiet unless you catch them disrobed together. Not a word to anyone, do I make myself clear?”
“Of course, Miss,” Filch nodded.
“Very good,” she smiled. “Now, is there anything else you wish to speak to me about?”
“No Ma'am.”
“Then I'll ask you to please leave so I can retire to my chambers.”
“Of course, Ma'am. Have a good night,” with that, he left the dolly covered office.
Alone, Umbridge thought to herself. She recalled the events of just the other day, when she had told Miss Granger she should be reading her course work instead of that book from the library. It was enough the girl had the gull to claim she had read and memorized the whole text already, but then Potter spoke out stating Granger was smart enough to teach... something she- Dolores Umbridge- could not do. The nerve! The ungrateful whelp thinking he knew better when she- like her beloved Minister Fudge- was just trying to undo the poison lies Dumbledore had placed into his young mind. Lies instilled post-trauma from Cedric's death. But... perhaps... she had been going about things all wrong.
Umbridge's eyes grew wide as new thoughts began to form. According to Rita Skeeter, Miss Granger had been in a relationship with Harry Potter as well as Victor Krum. Now, those at the Ministry knew all too well that anything written by Skeeter should be taken with a grain of salt. But what if Granger and Potter really had been in a secret affair? What if, while grieving for Cedric Diggory, they let their hormones get the better of them and took comfort from each others' bodies? It could even have happened some time before then. Kids would be kids, after all... and Potter and Granger did seem to think themselves above school rules. So then when it was discovered Miss Granger is with child- assuming Filch was correct- Dumbledore could be using the baby and Miss Granger's schooling as blackmail to have Golden Boy Potter lie about that night. Which begged the question, just how far along was Miss Granger?
In the words of Filch, 'Weasley knows'. Having been their friend for years, they would naturally have told him the first opportunity they had. Goodness, he was likely number one on their list as the baby's future Godfather. Mr Weasley would naturally be uncomfortable that his friends would be unwed parents, having been raised in proper pure-blood society. The scandal would come to light eventually; glamours could hide a pregnant belly, but not a whole baby. So when the truth became known, all associated with the pair would be looked down on just as equally as Potter and Granger themselves. No, she did not blame the boy for distancing himself from them.
It was a thick web of lies all weaved by that foul old man, Dumbledore. Those poor children were facing a great enough burden to their futures without his manipulating. This needed to stop. The truth must find a way out... but how? Weasley may feel uncomfortable, but he had remained quiet this long, likely to protect those he still considered his friends. Potter and Granger themselves were out, because with the truth came Granger's expulsion. No matter what support the Ministry could provide- even allowing her to keep her wand- it would not be enough without OWLs. None would hire such a girl. She was lucky to be with Potter though; with a fortunate as great as theirs. Potter would not need a job, and they could still live privileged lives. So they really had no reason to send the world into a mass panic just to keep their secret other than selfishness. Maybe Granger was aiming to get her NEWTs to achieve a high standing place in society to change it to muggle like ways. Oh that would not do; not at all. Umbridge made a mental note to keep an eye on the girl. As for the teachers, they were all clearly supports for Dumbledore; with the exception of herself and Filch. She would need to find out what she could from the other students. It would take great care and subtly, but then again, she was the Ministers Undersecretary for a reason. Potter and Granger's future was of no concern to her.
Stewing away her ideas, Umbridge took out a quick quotes quill and some parchment. Pacing her room, she went about her weekly report to Fudge with quick notes on this new development and the plans she was setting in motion. She smiled to herself knowing soon she would have Dumbledore's job, and finally set the school on it's proper track.
~ scene break~
Down in the dungeons, hidden behind a secret wall, slipping just a small ways into the lake was the grand yet cold atmosphere of the Slytherin House. Much like with it's brother houses, the common room sat empty for it's many students had long since retired to bed. Yet, not all whom had gone to bed were asleep. Draco Malfoy, self proclaimed prince of Slytherin and nemesis of Harry Potter, lay awake staring at the ceiling. It was not the phantom ache in his arms where he had regrown bones vanished by Potter... using Lockhart's made-up spell, no less! No, that was not what was keeping the young blonde awake tonight. It was a nagging at the back of his mind from curiosity. His grey eyes momentarily turned once more the fancy lime green wrapped package with a silver ribbon and bow on the nightstand. His father had sent it to him earlier that day.
What was inside was a mystery to Draco. Though he wanted to open it, the letter marked “Read First” had instructed not to. Why? Because apparently the fabulous looking present was not for him. No, it was for that Gryffindor Mudblood he hated just as much as Potter. The letter had said within was something that was going to ruin Granger's life. All Draco had to do was make sure she opened it somewhere where everyone could see. Draco had already devised a plan to give it during the Halloween feast in three days time. He even had a little monologue worked out to make sure she accepted and opened it. In the meantime, he had to sit quiet wondering just like his fellow Slytherins what was in the package. So, he played the same game he had played every Christmas for as long as he could remember; name that gift. It was Lucius' way of ensuring Draco became cunning. He was given three clues, and one guess. If he was right or close, he could open it before the twenty-fifth. If he was wrong, he had to wait until Christmas day. He was always rather good at it, but this one puzzled him.
Clue one: It was not jinxed. He knew it was not or Lucius would have sent it directly to her anonymously.
Clue two: It had to be something humiliating for the Mudblood that would not get Draco into trouble for giving it to her. Something that Draco would surely have a laugh at seeing first hand.
Clue three: The gift itself. The box's dimensions made him think it was a thin book, but it was not firm under his grip. It was light; a little more than a feather. When he shook it, it barely moved, and made little sound.
Clothes. Either a top and bottom set, or just a shirt. Draco's excited bubble suddenly popped. Oh sure, it probably had some clever embarrassing saying on it, but it made for a rather weak prank. How was that suppose to ruin Granger's life? Maybe if she were a house-elf... May as well be considering her love for the creatures. Scoffing, Draco turned over away from the gift. Then his curiosity peeked again.
Unable to take it any longer, he jumped up from his bed and grabbed both the package and his wand. Eyeing his sleeping dorm mates, he closed the curtain around his four-post bed. He eyed the ribbon carefully, and used a small cutting spells to remove the ribbon and wrapping without non-reversible damage. Then, with boiling excitement, he peered into the box. A wicked grin marked over his face as he took in the gift. Re-wrapping it perfectly, Draco's joy and excitement was reaching new heights. He rather regretted opening it now, because he still had three days to wait before he gave it to Granger. Potter was going to love this.
