“Draco… Draco, wake up.”
Draco groaned in annoyance and sat up to rub his eyes with his hand. “What time is it?” he asked as he blinked in the bright light streaming through the windows. How on Earth was it still so bloody bright in the library after all this time? Did nobody ever change the enchantment to show nighttime instead of day?
“It’s about seven o’clock. I thought you might be hungry,” Zac said as he gestured to a plate of roasted chicken and potatoes sitting nearby. “There’s some water there in the pitcher beside you too. I’ve already eaten so go ahead and dig in.”
Draco nodded a little and sat up straight before rubbing his face. He wasn’t sure when he’d fallen asleep but the last thing he remembered reading was something completely inane and impossible to understand about something called ‘Slip Streaming’. Not wanting to give himself another headache, Draco turned his attention to the food in front of him. His stomach growled and he realized he really was starved. The Malfoy Heir wondered for a moment just how long it had been since he’d eaten but then dismissed the question in favor of rectifying the situation. As Draco slowly devoured the delicious food in front of him his eyes wandered over his companion again.
The paler man choked when he realized that Zac was taking notes and seemingly very much able to understand the dizzying terms and abstract ideas. “Can-,” he paused before continuing to clear his throat before he choked again, “Can you actually understand all this?”
Zac looked up for a moment, seemingly surprised. “Yes, of course. Can’t you? All this is probably ancient by your standards.”
Draco shook his head a little. “This is all lightyears ahead of what they teach at Hogwarts.”
Zac frowned some, his brow furrowed cutely in confusion. “What’s a ‘lightyear’?”
“Uh… well, I think it’s the distance light travels in a year through space or something like that…” Draco said uneasily. He wasn’t sure if he was even right. It wasn’t something he’d thought about all that much. He just knew it was an insanely large number or time or something… He probably should have chosen a different phrase.
Zac blinked. “And how far is that?”
Draco shrugged. “I’m not really sure. I just know it’s a lot.”
Zac studied him for a moment before sighing. “I see,” he murmured before shaking his head a little and pulling another book closer to himself. “I think I might have found something that can help you, Draco. Or… at least something I could modify to help you…”
The Malfoy Heir’s eyes widened. “You did? Already?” he asked in surprise. They’d only been searching for a day. If Zac could figure out a complex problem like that so quickly it was absolutely mind boggling that he hadn’t been born more than just a squib.
Hell, how could Granger, who hadn’t a spec of magic in her family before herself, be a witch and Zac, who was a genius and the son of a witch, not have magic? It didn’t make sense and Draco couldn’t help but feel as if the fates were far too cruel to do something like that. Zac shrugged a little and waved his hand off to the side in a gesture that Draco had never seen before. It was a weird fluttering of his fingers and a slight twist of the boy’s thin wrist that was rather elegant if dismissive. “It’s not really anything I did. I just found the spell. I can’t actually perform it and we’d have to adjust it some. Maybe make it into a full blow ritual…”
Draco blinked to bring his attention back to what Zac was talking about. “What kind of spell is it?”
“It’s a vision spell for seeing into the future. If you combine it with an Astral Displacement spell thought… you could displace yourself into the future… theoretically,” Zac said as he took a few more notes off to the side. “But I’d want to test it all out first. It’s tricky to combine spells and using an Astral Displacement spell on a living thing is always risky.”
“But you said you can’t perform it…” Draco prompted.
Zac paused in his writing and sighed. “No. I can’t. It’s too complex a spell for me to even hope to come up with a potion for. It would take decades for me to even start doing it. It would be far more effective to find someone who could actually do magic and get them to help.”
“What about your teachers?” Draco asked. “When are they getting back?”
Zac sighed. “I don’t think they are coming back, Draco…” Zac said softly. Draco was about to ask why when he suddenly realized the other man’s lip was trembling slightly. Zac lifted a hand to rest it against his forehead, partially blocking Draco’s view of his face. “The school was abandoned… they sent everyone home. But when I reached the crossroads that led to my village the Hunters were already there so I had to run. This was the only place I could think of to hide.”
“Who’re the Hunters?” Draco asked.
Zac looked up, pain twisting his features some. “They are Muggles who hunt us down and kill us for our ‘unnatural practices’. They don’t understand us and so they strike out… it wouldn’t normally be a problem to fight Muggles but there’s so many of them now and you can’t tell a Hunter from any other kind…”
“Why did the Professors send you all away? Wouldn’t it be safest for you all here?” Draco asked in utter confusion. He couldn’t comprehend Hogwarts being abandoned if there was a threat. The fact that it would be a fight to take it had always been a given in his mind. Besides, if Muggles were the enemy there was safety in numbers, which they would have had here. It just didn’t make sense.
“It would have been if it hadn’t been for what happened last Samhain…” Zac murmured. “Muggles got in… we still don’t know how. It was near midnight and they just flooded in and caught us all asleep…” Zac’s eyes grew distant and even more pained.
Draco felt terrible for prying. Clearly, it was a memory that Zac found horrendously painful. The dark haired beauty trembled some and his eyes stayed locked on nothing in the distance. Wanting to break his new friend out of his current state, Draco did the first thing that came to him. He reached over and grabbed a handful of hair by the base of Zac’s neck and pulled him forward to crush their mouths together.
Zac trembled even more as tears sprung up in his eyes to quickly overflow. Draco refused to lose to whatever Zac was remembering and pulled the other man closer. With all the confidence befitting the Heir of the Malfoy house, Draco pried Zac’s trembling lips apart to deepen the kiss. A soft whimper escaped Zac’s throat as his eyes finally closed and he laid a gentle hand on Draco’s chest. Draco continued the kiss, using every ounce of his skill to fight away whatever Zac was struggling with. His lips and tongue steadily tried to coax Zac to participate in the kiss even as Draco’s hand came up to gently brush the tears away.
Slowly, Zac began to kiss back and his trembling eased a little. Only when Draco was sure that Zac was fully in the present again did he break the kiss. Zac let out a shuddering sigh. “I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to-”
“It’s nothing,” Draco assured him. “Don’t worry about it. I’m sorry to have brought it up.” Zac opened his eyes again and Draco wasn’t surprised to see the utter vulnerability there in his dark eyes. Clearly, Draco had prodded a very deep wound that hadn’t scarred over yet. “Come on, Zac… It’s getting late. We should get some rest. We can figure out more in the morning.”
Zac hesitated for a moment before nodding and slowly getting up from his seat. He wrapped an arm around Draco’s waist to help the Malfoy Heir up but Draco wasn’t entirely sure that Zac didn’t need the support as well. It didn’t take long for the two of them to get to the changing door and Zac to use his special keys to get them to his room.
Zac closed the door again and helped Draco into the bed. But he didn’t have a chance to pull away before Draco gently pulled him down into the small bed as well. Zac didn’t protest and slipped under the covers with him. Draco could tell that Zac would go along with nearly anything right now but seeing the pain the other man was in kept him from pursuing too much. He slowly undid the buttons of Zac’s robes and slid them out of the way. It was impossible for Draco to not be aroused but the sight of the creamy soft skin being slowly exposed but he held back any attempts to arouse the other man.
Once Zac was free of his heavy robes, Draco wrapped his arms around him and pulled him close. Zac was trembling again as he curled up against Draco’s chest. Draco’s hand found it’s way into Zac’s dark hair and slowly began to stroke it back. “It’s alright,” he murmured gently. “Everything’s going to be fine, Zac. Don’t worry. You’re safe.”
