Draco and Severus were packed up and ready to go the night before they were expected to floo to Hogwarts. Harry as always had to pack his trunk in a hurry. Chloe the house-elf helped him out quite a bit in the process. Draco had to suppress a laugh when Harry nearly flew across the house to find his favorite shoes. They had appeared to be missing and when Harry summoned them, they didn’t come. He finally gave up and transformed the pair he was wearing into the other pair. It would have to do for now.
Flooing directly into Harry’s teachers quarters, Draco’s jaw nearly dropped. The walls were made of deep brown wood panels. Just stepping out of the fireplace was a tan leather couch and chairs all around a coffee table. Two end tables sat on each side of the couch with lamps. While looking out of the fire to the left was a big bookshelf that looked empty at the moment. Draco knew soon enough that Severus would have it filled with books from the library.
Behind the living room area opened up to a kitchen with the same dark wood that matched everything else in the room. An island bar separated the two rooms; two barstools would soon become three to accommodate the room’s occupants. Just out from the kitchen was a small dining table with again two chairs that would become four when the room adjusted to the wizards staying there. A low chandelier hung above the dining table four candles with big open bulbs lit the area.
Beyond the kitchen opened up into a study which would resemble the nook at their home. The room was a half of an octagon so there was a door straight ahead, and one to each the left and right walls. The sanded walls were decorated with paintings that separated the doors. Harry knew behind each door would be bedrooms that resembled their home; each also had a bathroom too.
The trunks that had been in the living room had magically appeared at the end of each owners bed, Draco was the only one surprised by how nice the room was. He had expected a single room with one bed that would have to extend for two more to fit. A small stove and sink and a table, maybe a tiny bathroom and desk shoved in the corners. He had never expected the extravagance of the room. Harry smiled at the Slytherins shock.
Severus grumbled to himself and made his way to his personal bedroom, he was almost sure that he would be very unpleased being here. He no longer had full access to the dungeons.
“We’ll have to add on a few rooms of course but its home for the extent of my teaching. I have no clue where I can fit a potions lab for Snape and a personal sitting room for you Draco.
“I could help with that.” Draco spoke up; Severus turned around and faced the blond. If there was a chance he could have his potions back then he would listen. “My wardrobe is my height from the top of my head to my feet; it doesn’t even have legs so someone could just step right into it. Well I did that purposely. As a kid all of my clothes wouldn’t fit in it so my parents transformed it. If you were to step into my wardrobe you would be in a big closet. The spell can be used to fit any standards, like with potions it could be charmed so the room wouldn’t let out any of the fumes and such from Severus’ brewing.”
“That’s brilliant Malfoy.” Harry gave him a wide smile and turned to Snape. “Would you be satisfied with that if I can duplicate the wardrobe and put one in your room?”
“It could be pleasing if done correctly.” Snape’s voice rattled Harry a little. He didn’t know why but somehow he had expected his old potions teacher to maybe at least be on friendly terms with him. But then again he was the older man’s guardian now; he could understand how that could be awkward for the Wizard.
“Draco do you know the spell to create the room?” Draco nodded and headed into his bedroom, he carried out two small wardrobes in his palm seconds later. Draco silently proceeded to lead them into Severus’ room; he placed the wardrobe down and turned it to its full size. Severus was taller than he so Draco made it a little taller to fit the man’s height.
“Okay so what do you want the room to look like, get the image in your head and close your eyes. Now remove the memory and place it in the jar connected to the handle.” Snape did so. “Okay now go on and step in.”
Just looking inside when Severus opened the door Harry saw a room that matched the wood paneling in the rest of their rooms but also had plush carpeting. Two tables were in the middle of the table and many cabinets lined the walls full of empty vials and bottles waiting to be filled.
“Of course you will have to get the ingredients and the equipment but the rest looks fine.” Draco noticed just past the tables was a desk that matched with a stuffed chair. Severus would have fun decorating this, the Slytherin just knew it. “Your turn.”
Draco turned to Harry and led him to his own room. He copied the same motions with Harry as he had with Severus and when Harry opened the wardrobe door a beautiful sight met his eyes. Harry had chosen deep green couches and dark wood. On one wall were a ton of bookshelves, in the middle of the room was a pensive and cabinet that resembled Dumbledore’s. Each of the walls had a house banner as well as many pictures of Harry’s life; including the portrait of his parents, Harry had chosen a wooden floor and in the corner sat a wood rocking chair with a cushion in it. A desk was angled just in front of the shelves.
Draco had chosen an outdoor theme to his wardrobe this time. It sort of resembled the outside of their back yard with the patio but instead of shrubs they were replaced with flower beds along the walls, bricks at the bottom separating the ground so when they were watered it wouldn’t spill out and would only go in the dirt. Instead of a cement slab though the ground was made of large flat stones and there was no umbrella or table. In its place sat two very comfortable looking chairs, a torch matching the others around the room, in-between them for light. One wall looked like the outside of their house out back and it was lined with book cases of his own, as well as a small work table to the left hand side of the door. The wardrobe entrance literally looked like a glass door just like at the cottage.
“Okay so now that this is finished we need to meet with McGonagall for your schedule and paper signing.” Harry motion for the blond to follow him through the portrait and out into the hall. Draco was mildly surprised that their portrait door led out into the main hallway down the third floor corridor. “All teachers’ doors are down this hall, except for the heads of houses.” Harry clarified.
“Good to know.” Draco followed Harry to McGonagall’s office.
“Feather falls.” Harry spoke to the statue of the witch, she immediately started spinning. Minerva had turned Dumbledore’s old office into her own.
“Ah, Mr. Potter. Mr. Malfoy. I wondered when I would be seeing you.” Minerva gave Draco an appraising look. Draco shied back a little and stepped behind Harry.
“We’re here to get his schedule and deal with the papers.” Harry didn’t like the look the witch was giving his charge and stepped a little more to the left so Draco was fully behind him.
“I see,” Minerva grabbed the record book and magically moved words from it to a blank sheet of paper; Harry knew the paper had to do with the classes Draco would have to complete to pass his eighth year. “Mr. Malfoy you will find that you must catch up in all of your classes by the end of the semester or you will be failed.”
Harry also didn’t like the tone in her voice. “I have already explained this to him Mini. He knows his responsibilities and is ready to get right to it.”
“I see,” She repeated and handed the paper over to Harry. He looked it over and made sure everything that was needed on it was actually there. He handed it back to Draco and passed the quill Mini had just handed him. Draco signed on the line and handed it back, Harry signed it as well and gave it to the head mistress. “Many people will not be pleased with this arrangement Mr. Potter; you should expect some heat coming your way, you as well Malfoy.”
“He knows what to expect. But I take it you will do your job and keep him safe while he is within the castle grounds.” Harry crossed his arms over his chest. Minerva went to charming another blank paper.
“I will do what I can but there is no guarantee.” She stated handing Harry Draco’s schedule and turning to her bookshelf.
“If he gets hurt on your watch believe me when I say there will be hell to pay from both you and the ministry.” Minerva kept herself facing away from them.
“Please see to it that the door closes behind you.” Harry grabbed ahold of Draco’s arm and pulled him out of the room.
No one said anything until they were in the safety of their rooms. “If she refuses to watch over your safety I will take action.”
Severus looked up from the book he had his nose buried in and studied the two men. Harry looked agitated and on edge. Draco was scared and pale. Harry led the Slytherin over to the couch and sat him down. He summoned a glass of water from the kitchen and gave it to him.
“She would let me get hurt wouldn’t she?” Draco murmured his eyes on the half empty glass in hand. Severus straightened up and set his book aside on the table. Draco was worried about being harmed, why?
“I have no clue what she will allow when it comes to you.” Harry sighed, rubbing his forehead, elbows resting on his knees. He looked very much like a bored child.
“Minerva would let her students get away with anything concerning an ex-Death Eater. It would be smart to stay in a group you trust Draco. If you cannot find one I will accompany you if necessary.” Snape hated the thought of becoming Draco’s shadow but if he had to, to keep him safe he would.
“You could use my invisibility cloak if you need Snape.” Harry let out a sigh and leaned back.
“It would be significantly easier that way but I can’t imagine my days will be joyful.” Snape remarked, he grabbed the book he had been reading and took it to the bookshelf. As Draco had suspected, it was filled to the brim with books.
“If anything happens to you I will take it to the ministry and Minerva doesn’t want that with how slack she has been on the students lately.” Harry also stood and made his way to the kitchen. He raided the fridge and pantry and finally settled on some fried chicken, friend potatoes and fried, battered squash. Of course the meal would be oily but he rarely ever made anything fattening. “I talked to one of the shops in Diagon Alley. They would be willing to purchase different types of potions from you if you will brew for them Snape. You don’t have to or anything but I figured you would like something to keep you busy while here.”
“Have they a contract ready?” Harry nodded and used his wand to summon the contract that had been delivered a few days back. Harry had forgotten all about it until he saw Snape’s new lab. The contract went immediately to Severus and the man looked it over. It had all the types of potions that were expected of him if he signed on the dotted line.
“Do you have a quill?” Severus never took his eyes off the paper.
A cup full of quills and an ink bottle appeared in front of him. Severus quickly dipped the quill and signed the paper. It immediately disappeared from his grasp. He knew that it would wind up in the hands of the shop owner so he didn’t worry about it.
When dinner was done all three of them sat around the table. Harry looked at the two males interacting with one another in a joking manor. Draco took a bite of food and groaned out at the flavor; never had he even tasted anything this good. Even from home where all the food was the finest out there.
“This is strange.” Draco mumbled when they had finished the meal. “I am use to sitting at a large table with twenty chairs in between me and my parents who sat at the opposite end.”
“You had to eat like that all the time? In a formal dining area I mean?” Draco nodded picking up his plate and taking the other two to the sink as well. He began to rinse them when Harry spoke again. “You never ate at a small table where you didn’t have to practically yell for everyone to hear you?”
“Not until I was at your home.” Draco admitted, putting the dishes and silverware on a drying wrack.
“What do you prefer the close confines of a small table or the open space with the large?” Harry asked, he grabbed a glass out of the cupboard and poured himself a drink. Neither man noticed Severus slowly making his way out of the room so he wasn’t a disturbance. Draco and Harry needed time alone to bond and Severus knew it.
“Honestly I like the small table better. Like you said I had to yell across it to be heard over my parents bickering. I felt as if I were an outsider watching them from afar instead of their son.” Draco turned from the sink and leaned back against the counter. His eyes raked over Harry very slowly. If the other man noticed he didn’t say anything about it.
“Good, I would hate to have to extend our little table. I rather like them small as well.” Harry filled up his glass again when he realized he had drunk all the Butter Beer inside it. He offered a glass to Draco and the blond took it easily.
“This place does need some minor changes to it.” Draco commented looking around the kitchen. “Maybe a few flower pots or something.”
“You like flowers don’t you?” Draco could tell that Harry was genuinely curious and not making fun of him like others had in the past.
“It’s part of my nature.” Draco smiled, he knew that Harry wouldn’t understand what he meant but the smile he got in return made him want to explain it, and that’s how he had wound up in Severus lab with him later on that night.
“How can I help you Draco?” Severus looked up from the cauldron.
“I got the urge to tell him earlier Sev.” Draco sat down on a bench next to where Snape was working.
“Why haven’t you Draco? You are under his care now and he has a right to know that he is your mate, he needs to know about your Veela inheritance so he can prepare for it.” Severus stirred the contents in the caldron.
“What if he doesn’t accept me Severus, I don’t even think he’s gay.” Draco grabbed one of the nearby cauldrons and filled it with water. He began adding a few ingredients that Severus had packed with him when he had taken the contents of his old lab from his old home.
“Only stir it three times each way or it will turn out to be a nasty result.” Severus informed as he watched his ex-student make a headache relieving potion. “Fate wouldn’t match you with an unfit Mate Draco. You are meant to be with Harry and Fenrir Greyback.”
A silence filled the room while the Slytherins brewed together. A thought plagued Severus to the point of admission.
“Greyback’s crimes were severe Draco. Two days ago in Azkaban he killed a witch in the temporary holding cell. He is to be given the Dementors Kiss at the end of the week. He is only staying that long so the ministry can contact his pack and set up a new alpha.” Severus informed the younger man, he saw how Draco’s shoulders tensed. “If you have any hope of surviving your mate’s death, you need the comfort of your other mate. You will have to tell Harry before then or I’m afraid you will freak even the boy who lived out, with your shrieks of pain.”
Draco didn’t respond to what Snape had said. He knew he would have to tell Harry sooner or later but he would have rather it have been later. Harry had been nice to him and he didn’t want the Gryffindor to feel pressured to be with him because of Draco’s inheritance. He had to be optimistic in this type of situation or Draco knew he would lose it. “Maybe after Fenrir’s execution, fate will pick a more compatible mate for me. One who won’t try to eat me?”
“Maybe Draco, but remember you need to tell Harry what is going on. Add a little more leaf ash and stir it two more times.” Severus instructed when he saw Draco reaching for the wrong ingredient. “Boil it for three minutes and then put store it in vials.”
“That I can control.” Draco murmured to himself; he used the next few minutes as a distraction, maybe if he didn’t think about telling Potter, he wouldn’t feel like he was hiding something from the wizard.
