Chapter 3 – The Headmasters Office
Professor McGonagall turned to her class that was in an uproar ever since the girl popped into existence in her Transfiguration classroom. At the moment several small yellow canaries flittered about the room. It seems one of the students thought it would be funny at this point in time. They were clearly mistaken. Oh, she wasn’t angry but it certainly was not the time for even the smallest of pranks. Thankfully the lesson was almost complete; she wanted to find out more about this Ashleigh Grey.
“Attention.” She said sharply. The class immediately turned to her giving her their full attention, the canaries disappeared.
“As class was almost complete before our guest’s intrusion, you are all dismissed. I expect you all to have your essays on Animagus forms at the beginning of next class.”
The class, excited at getting out a mere fifteen minutes early, chattered excessively. There were three students in particular however that were curious for different reasons.
“You don’t think she was sent here by You-Know-Who, do you?” Ron asked a bit terrified.
Hermione just stared at him for a moment. When she finally did answer, it was with a quiet calmness that indicated she had rolled over many possibilities before she spoke.
“I don’t think he would, mainly because she seems to be a Muggle. And did you listen when she spoke…”
Ron cut her off saying, “Yeah, I kind of like that American accent,” with a sloppy grin.
Hermione looked as if she was about to breathe fire. Harry saw this as his cue to break up a lovers quarrel before it got heated.
“I don’t think that’s what she meant mate.” He said as they continued down the hall way.
“It most certainly was not. No, she said that ‘one minute I was outside in the rain at the Ruins and the next I’m here.’ Time turners can transport you through time but cannot move your location. Meaning that Hogwarts must have fallen sometime in the future.” She said with a grave look on her face.
Harry and Ron were speechless. They of course hadn’t even thought of that. Harry had been too busy thinking of why she had come, who had sent her, and why she looked so much like himself. It was almost uncanny, well except for her eyes. Her eyes are hazel where as his are green. But the features and hair color were almost exact to his own. He wondered if she was a relative of his or even a child. After all she was from the future.
Ron on the other hand had only stared at the newcomer with wonderment in his eyes. Sure, he was dating Hermione but that didn’t mean he couldn’t appreciate another female. It’s not as if he would actually act on it. He would never do that to Hermione, he loved her. Besides, it took long enough for them to get together in the first place. After six years he wasn’t about to muck up just because he liked this girl’s American accent, he did have more sense that that.
Harry looked chest fallen. “If Hogwarts falls, I guess that means Voldemort wins.”
“Not necessarily.”
“Hermione what are you going on about. Of course that’s what it means, what else could it mean. I mean, if I won the castle would have been restored wouldn’t it?” He asked, frustration filling his voice.
“Harry, listen. I know that is probably what happened in the future but we may be able to change the outcome. That girl may be able to provide us information that will help us win the war. It’s not like she’s going to run into herself any time soon. I’m sure Dumbledore will see it the same way.”

“Now, Miss Grey. I must ask you to recount everything that happened that lead you here.”
“Well, I was vacationing in Scotland with two of my friends from college. Our main reason for coming here to begin with was to see the Ruins. It was the most fascinating subject in our European History class. I mean, the mystery behind it alone is enough to interest anyone. While I was looking through the Ruins I came to a room that’s ceiling half exposed the sky. There was a dark cabinet against the far wall; it looked as if it had been cherry, now that I think about it. There was a mythical bird with extremely large plumage coming out of its rear carved into it. I searched the cabinet and found what you told me was the time turner. I couldn’t take my eyes off of it, like something was pulling me to it. It was strange. I walked back outside and I spun the dials…almost as if I was in a trance. I didn’t recall how I had gotten back outside when it started raining. I got extremely dizzy; everything started to move in rapid succession around me. I sat down, put my head down and closed my eyes to make the nausea go away. When I felt the rain stop, I was sitting on the floor of that class room with a bunch of kids staring at me.”
“What do you know about the Ruins, as you call them?”
As Ashleigh opened her mouth to answer, a ball of flames erupted to Dumbledore’s right. Letting out a high pitched scream she jerked back into the chair afraid of what was happening. After a moment the ball of flames turned into a large red bird that had the longest and most full red and gold plumage she had ever seen. She gasped as she realized that this was the bird depicted on that cherry cabinet. She looked at Dumbledore for an explanation.
Dumbledore smiled at the bird, a twinkle in his blue eyes. It looked almost as if he was communicating with it. He then turned to her and regarded her slightly.
“I apologize for the interruption. This is Fawkes, my Phoenix. I can already see you have made the connection between him and the cabinet you found. Do not let him frighten you, Phoenixes’ are truly wonderful creatures and perfectly harmless. The ball of flame you witnessed was only his method of travel.”
Ashleigh looked uncertain but answered with an “Oh.”
“Now would you please continue what you were saying?” He asked as Fawkes settled on his perch.
“Oh…Yeah. Well not much is known about it even though it was found almost forty years ago. It just appeared out of nowhere, strange really. They named it the Ruins only because there were no records found that could give clue to who had owned it. It is considered as one of the biggest mysteries of the world, right up there with Stonehenge and the Grand Canyon. And, well that’s about it. Not much is it?”
“No my dear, but it is enough for me to change my tactics.” He stated cryptically.
“What do you mean?” She had the feeling that he wouldn’t tell her and she was correct.
“That, my dear, will have to wait for another time.”
“Okay, I have one question and I need you to answer me truthfully.” She paused and took a deep breath. “Will I be able to go home?”
Dumbledore had a sad look in his normally bright blue eyes as he answered her with the one word he knew she did not want to hear. “No.”
She nodded her head in understanding, expecting that answer after what he had said about only being able to travel back in time and not forward.
“Now I must do one test, to see if you are truly a Muggle…”
“Muggle?”
“It means non-magical folk, or if you have some repressed magic in you. To do this, I will need a small drop of your blood.”
