Chapter 3
Heading up to the headmaster's office, Harry had to fight to keep from grinning like an idiot. Feast was over and it was almost time to head to the train to go home. Already, his stuff was packed and waiting with his friends down in the entrance hall. Hedwig had been released and was told to head to Grimmauld Place. She had actually seemed pleased with that. Now all he had to do was pick up Sirius as Snuffles and they were ready. This he was looking forward to! Twenty-four hours with the Dursleys then he was done with them and a summer of fun was in the offing! There was also the fact that with that bond forming, something that he was now certain the feelings he was dealing with was from, the fact that he got to be close to Sirius rather than just talk to him through the mirror every night, he was stoked for this to happen!
After giving the password to the gargoyle, Blood Pops, he rode the stairs to the top then, before he could knock on the door, Dumbledore told him to come in. Opening it, the first thing his eyes found was Sirius, making him grin. Without even thinking about it, he walked over to the man and hugged him. He grinned even bigger when he felt the older man hug him back. After they broke it off, he couldn't wipe it off his face. Remembering where he was, he looked at Dumbledore and waited.
Blue eyes twinkling, the older wizard nodded to the Harry, smiling slightly. “All ready, Harry?”
“Yes, sir,” Harry told him, leaning against Sirius.
Holding up the harness Sirius was going to wear, Dumbledore stepped in front of the desk. “As soon as Sirius changes, we need to put this on. It'll protect him from anyone thinking something is off. Also, as his nickname is well known, you need to call him something else.”
“I'll call him Snuffles,” Harry said with a nod.
“Good name,” Dumbledore said with a nod. “Now, when you get to King's Cross, Tonks and Kingsley are going to meet you there. You're going to take a Ministry car to the Dursley's. Tomorrow, when the twenty-four hours are up, Sirius is just going to Apparate you to Grimmauld Place. If there is any problem at all, get a hold of Arabella. She has a way to get in contact with us and we'll get there as fast as we can. Alright?” He asked, looking back and forth between the two of them. Seeing them both nod, he motioned for Sirius to change. When the big bear-like dog was standing there, he put the harness on him and handed the leash part to Harry. Before motioning them to leave, he said, “Be careful, both of you.”
“We will, sir,” Harry said with a grin. Looking down at Sirius, he said, “Come on, Snuffles, let's go find Ron and Hermione.”
Giving a bark, tail wagging, Sirius led the way out of the office.
Sitting on the train, watching the scenery pass by, Harry had pretty much tuned out what everyone was talking about. The topics stayed to the mundane or a discussion about what happened at the Ministry, nothing serious or that he needed to pay attention to. Harry was ignoring it for the most part unless someone asked him a direct question. Instead, he leaned against Snuffles and petted him softly. For the first time since coming back through the veil, he felt completely relaxed and the 'voices' he was hearing were dampened slightly. Because he was so close to the beings that were in the compartment with him, the ‘voices’ were there and worse than with most of the others he knew, but he found if he was touching Sirius, it seemed to dampen them a bit. That he liked. Honestly? They were really getting to him, making it hard for him to concentrate on anything when they were loud or there were lots of them around.
After the snack cart had gone through and Ron and Hermione had returned from their prefect rounds, they settled into the compartment with them. Harry could see that they both had plenty of questions for him, especially Hermione as she had just gotten out of the hospital wing the night before and he had been in bed by then, but they didn't ask because Luna and Neville were there. Instead, they kept things to just general talk about what had gone on. Rather than participate, Harry just leaned against Sirius, letting his eyes drift shut. He was more comfortable than he had been since coming back through the veil and he wanted to enjoy it!
While leaning against Sirius, he dozed off but was woken up when Neville asked about his summer plans and Sirius had nudged him with his nose. Opening his eyes, he was about to answer when the door to the compartment slid open. Looking up, he gave an internal sigh when he saw Malfoy standing there flanked by Crabbe and Goyle. He had hoped that the stupid ferret would see it was prudent to leave them alone for once, but it didn't appear that way. Sitting up straight, making sure to grab his wand, he listened to the familiar refrain of insults that were starting. However, they were cut off by a deep growl from Snuffles. Before Harry could say anything, Sirius hopped off the bench then walked over to the door and growled, baring his teeth, fur bristling. Now, Harry doubted that his godfather would do anything to Malfoy because of his age but he said, “Malfoy, get out here.”
Sneering, though more pale than before because of the massive dog that was standing in front of him, Malfoy took a step back then said, “Get him under control before I hex him then report him to the Ministry as a dangerous animal, Potter!”
“Report him all you want, you git,” Ron told him, arms folded over his chest, grinning slightly. “Look at his harness, Malfoy. He's a Ministry approved service animal given to Harry to protect him. I wouldn't mess with him if I were you. I'm sure you've heard what these kind of dogs can do to a person that is messing with the beings they are supposed to protect.”
Eyes flickering to the harness, Malfoy saw the seal of the Ministry on it and backed away more. Raising his wand, he said, “Ministry approved or not, if it comes at me, it's hexed!”
“Then get out of here,” Hermione sniffed. “He's only reacting to your presence and how you're acting. If you leave he won't bother you.”
Remembering the dog he had seen on the platform before the start of term, Malfoy narrowed his eyes. Quickly, he cast the animagus reveal spell that he had been taught by his father, sure this was Black once more. However, when it didn't have any effect and the results came back negative then the dog growled louder, taking another step closer to him, he backed away before sneering at the beings in the compartment. Sticking his nose in the air, he, trailed by his two goons, then headed down the corridor.
After Hermione got up and shut the door, Sirius came back over then hopped onto the seat once more, leaning back against Harry.
Petting Sirius, he just grinned, shaking his head, listening to the others laugh about Malfoy's reaction. Leaning against Sirius, Harry let his eyes drift shut again. While doing that, he could have sworn he heard Sirius say something about how that would teach the younger Malfoy to mess with him and automatically replied, very softly so that no one else could hear, “It won't work for long. He'll just dream up another way to go about it as all.”
Startled, Sirius' head whipped Harry's direction and he gave a soft bark to get his attention. When Harry opened his eyes, Sirius thought, “Harry, can you hear me?”
Startled, Harry's eyes widened when he 'heard' it then nodded before glancing around to make sure no one else caught on to what was happening. They all were laughing, joking about Malfoy and weren't paying attention to anything coming from his direction. Brow furrowing, Harry thought, “Can you hear me, Sirius?”
Staring at his godson, stunned, Sirius thought back, “Yeah, I can! Damn! This is new!”
Rubbing his eyes in a tired way, Harry groaned softly then shook his head. “Oh yeah, more strangeness we don't need in this! It's bad enough as it is without more being tossed in!” He thought at Sirius.
Nuzzling Harry's head with his own, Sirius thought back, “Yeah, it's strange, that's for sure. It could prove useful though, think of it that way! When we get home tomorrow, we can start looking it up. Remus will be able to help. It has to be the bond. Only thing I can think of. You haven't had this with anyone else, have you?”
“No! And it just started with you!”
“Yeah, that is probably because it's the first time we've been together, as in touching and such, since the whole thing happened,” Sirius thought to him. “That would explain it, I think. However, just to make sure, see if you can't get through to Hermione or something. I don't think it'll work as I believe it's just between us, but I want to make sure.”
Nodding, Harry tried to direct a thought message to Hermione, who was deep in a conversation with Ginny about something or other but it didn't seem to be getting through to her no matter how hard he concentrated. After a few minutes, he thought, “Nope, not working.”
“Didn't think so,” Sirius thought back. “Nothing to worry about, I don't think. We'll look into it but it's either part and parcel of the bond or whatever it is that's coming for you. I'm guessing the bond, but we'll take a look and see what we can find. Either way, it's probably a good thing, even if it's only me that can pick it up.”
Grinning a little, somewhat hiding his face in Sirius' fur so no one else saw it, he thought, “Yeah, it could come in handy, not to mention be fun!”
Chuckling, Sirius thought back, “That it could be! We could have a lot of fun with this!”
Curling up to Sirius, Harry rested his head on the soft fur that covered his godfather and shut his eyes once more, a small smile on his lips. Normally, since he wouldn’t see them for most of the summer, he would want to talk to his friends, but now all he wanted to do was be close to his godfather. It made him feel good and tingle. That was trumping everything else. Not to mention he was so relaxed that he thought he could easily fall asleep.
Sirius, too, was feeling something similar so he leaned against Harry and shut his eyes. He wouldn't nap, but he was content to just sit there. “Sleep, Harry, I'll wake you if anything happens.” He thought to his godson softly.
“Alright,” Harry thought back then sighed and started to drift off.
As was always the case when they stepped off the train at King's Cross, there was chaos. To Harry, it seemed worse than normal. He supposed, with what had happened at the Ministry, it was as though there seemed to be not only more family members milling around but Aurors as well, looking serious and keeping an eye on things, wands out.
Holding onto Sirius' harness, he pulled his trunk along behind him, keeping close to Hermione, Ginny and Ron. When they got to Mrs. Weasley, flanked by Fred and George, she fussed over all of them more than she normally did, making sure to give Harry a tight hug. Looking down at Sirius, she pursed her lips, something that told Harry she was less than pleased with the whole thing, but didn't say anything. Instead, she told them all to hang on and wait for the Aurors, trying to keep an eye on who was around them.
Quickly, Tonks and Kingsley, with a couple others Harry didn't know, came over to them. Though they had clothes the colors Aurors wore, they were dressed as Muggles with casual clothes on. Looking her normal self, hair as pink as ever, Tonks grinned at him, “Wotcher, Harry!”
“Hey, Tonks,” he grinned back.
After Kingsley said hello, he told him, “Alright, Harry, we got a car for you out front and ready to go. You ready?”
Nodding, Harry grabbed his trunk again and held onto Sirius' harness.
Taking the trunk from the young man, Kingsley said, “Let me handle this. You make sure to stay between Tonks and I no matter what. And hang on to the dog.”
Nodding, Harry clutched tightly to the harness and followed along. As they passed the Malfoy's he could see all of them eyeing the dog and Draco sneering but they said nothing. In fact, considering the look the Aurors with them were giving Lucius, the three of them looked slightly uncomfortable. That was something that made Harry want to grin but he didn't. Instead, he kept right on going, trying to make it look like he hadn’t glanced their way. Just before they reached the barrier, he waved to Hermione and the Weasleys, telling them goodbye then promising to write.
Once they passed through to the station itself, the two of them flanking him made sure they kept a hand on Harry while rushing him through to the outside. Right out front were a couple Ministry cars. Harry and Sirius were ushered into the front one in the back seat then were joined by Tonks and Kingsley once his trunk was stowed in the boot. As usual, the inside of the car was a lot bigger than what it looked on the outside and everyone could fit comfortably. Once they were all in, the car was off, easily sliding through traffic and seeming to move at a faster speed than the normal ones around them.
Leaning against Sirius, Harry petted him while talking quietly to Tonks and Kingsley. He was a little nervous about the Dursleys, and how they would react to this, but assumed everything had been smoothed over by now. If not, well, this was Sirius. He was more than capable of handling whatever they had to say on the topic. In fact, he was probably sure that it would be fun to watch!
When they finally slid into the driveway of Privet Drive, Harry felt the first stirrings of apprehension coming back. He knew, even if the Dursleys had agreed to this, they weren't going to be happy about it and would make a fuss once everyone was gone. That he didn't want to happen, especially with Sirius around. However, since he was home, he was going to have to deal with it. He just wondered how bad it was going to get was all. One never knew when it came to the parties that were going to be involved. Knowing Sirius, though, he knew his godfather would come out on top of the whole thing. The only thing he hoped was that hexes wouldn’t be involved.
Getting out of the car with Sirius, Harry waited for Tonks and Kingsley to join him with his trunk. Though he could see several of the neighbors watching, obviously curious about the official looking cars, and Aunt Petunia peering out from behind a curtain, looking more sour than normal, he didn't move. When Kingsley and Tonks had his trunk, they walked him to the door. After ringing the bell, they waited.
Uncle Vernon answered, his face a reddish color, looking less than pleased. Glaring at Harry, he then looked down at the dog. Seeing the huge animal, his face grew redder. Glancing at the beings with him, he said nothing, waiting.
Nodding to Vernon, Kingsley said, “Everything is fine, no issues getting here. So, we'll be going.”
Not saying a word, Vernon just nodded again, peering around to see who was watching then stepped aside to let Harry and the dog in.
Handing over his trunk, Tonks said, “See you soon, Harry!”
Grinning slightly, Harry told both of them as he grabbed his trunk, “Thanks, Tonks and Kingsley, see you soon!” Then, making sure to keep hold of Sirius' harness, he led the dog inside while dragging his trunk behind.
Once inside and Vernon had shut the door, Harry stopped, waiting for what he knew was coming, glancing warily between Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon.
Standing there, glaring at his nephew, Vernon's mustache bristled out more than normal before he snarled, “Boy! I don't care what your lot says; there is no way that dog is staying in this house with you! It goes in the backyard until you leave! I will not have some mangy mutt in this house tearing things up!”
Hearing Sirius snarl in his mind, Harry let go of the harness, sure what was coming. Not saying a word, he just backed up. Since he wasn't touching his godfather, the 'voices' in his head were back full force. Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon's were saying mostly what was always said aloud to him. However, Dudley, who was in the doorway, looking at him, was confusing him. What he was hearing from his cousin was him silently telling his parents to shut up and leave him alone. Giving his cousin a quizzical look, he didn't say anything but wondered about that, confused by it.
After hearing another mental snarl from Sirius and a few swear words, Harry glanced down to see the harness drop onto the floor as his godfather transformed back into his normal self. Now he was sure that things were going to hit the fan.
Once he was fully transformed, Sirius pulled his wand then leveled it at Harry's aunt and uncle. Grinning slightly manically, he said, “Well, well, well... I've been waiting to meet you two for a long time now!”
Eyes widening, Petunia let out a soft shriek then covered her mouth, eyes bulging. Vernon went pale, the red flush almost draining away. Dudley, clutching his backside, slid over and hid behind his parents, cowering slightly, whimpering.
Grinning, dark eyes almost dancing, Sirius looked at Harry then said, “Why don't you introduce me to them, Harry?”
Unable to help himself, Harry chuckled slightly then said, “Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia, this is my godfather, Sirius Black.” That, of course, was met by a muffled cry from his aunt and his uncle going even more pale than before.
Taking a couple steps forward, wand still leveled at the two adults, Sirius said, tone a silken dagger, “I've been wanting to meet you two for a long time. You see, I'm well aware how you've treated Harry all these years. I'm gathering that you don't know that you've had people, our people, watching this house for a long time so I've heard all about the things you've done to him. I think, finally, it's time that we have a talk about that, don't you?” Taking another step closer, liking how the two were cringing, he snapped, “Your nephew isn't a freak! He isn't a servant either. Yet that's how you've treated him! His name is Harry, Vernon, not boy or whatever else you chose to call him. Nor is he a waste of space. In fact, I can almost guarantee that he's the only reason the three of you are still alive! If it wasn't for him, the wards around this house wouldn't be here and the ones that followed the being that killed Lily would be able to get to you. Though Albus apparently hasn't informed you of such things, the maniac that killed Harry's parents is back. As he's back and gathering his followers, his main target is going to be Harry. He's going to go after him any way he can. That includes going after those Harry is close to. As you are the last of his relatives, you have a big target painted on you.” Stopping, he waited for that to sink in.
Standing there, Harry watched his aunt begin to shake, her eyes growing wider, while his uncle seemed to grow paler with each passing moment. Dudley, cringing behind them, whimpered softly, shaking. As he took the whole thing in, Harry's brow furrowed. Though he could hear all three in his mind, Dudley was the only one he was paying attention to. His cousin, the being that had tormented him for so long, was apologizing, profusely. Nor did Harry think it was a case of doing it because of the wand and grown wizard that was present. It seemed, from what he was picking up, that his cousin realized that he had saved his life the year before when it came to the whole bit with the Dementors. In doing that, Dudley was seeing him in a different light. No, Harry wasn't going to do the whole cozy thing with Dudley, but he thought it was a step in the right direction. Quickly, he passed that along to Sirius.
Hearing Harry, Sirius gave a brief nod then said, glaring at the two adults, “Dudley, why don't you leave. This is a talk I want to have with your parents. My beef is with them. Go to your room or something. I won't involve you in this.”
Wide eyed, glancing at his mum and dad, Dudley then nodded before he quickly hurried up the stairs, vanishing into his room then shutting the door behind him.
Once he was sure Dudley was in his room, though certain he was listening, Sirius stepped closer to the others once more. Wand still leveled at them, he hissed, “For what you've done to my godson, I should hex you into oblivion. You would both deserve it, too!” Looking at Petunia, he snapped, “Harry is your sister's son! Your own blood! Your sister, if something would have happened to you, would never have harmed Dudley! She would have raised him right and loved him as if he were her own! Never once would she have thought about abusing or neglecting him just because she was jealous over something you had that she didn't. Nor would she have let James hurt him in any of the ways you've let Vernon do! Shame on you! You both disgust me! You knew what he was and what he would be able to do. There was also no way that you could quash the magic from him. In trying like you did, all you might have succeeded in doing was making him an angry young man that would eventually be able to wield magic without getting in trouble with the Ministry for it. Then he could come back and get revenge for all you've done to him.”
Stopping, he shot a deadly look at both of them then, seeing the frightened look on their faces as they glanced at Harry, he hissed, “Harry wouldn't though. He, despite how you treated him, doesn't want anything to happen to you. That sure as hell makes him better than either of you ever thought of being. I wanted him to just come with me this summer and not come back here so the wards stay up. There was no way I cared that those wards would come down, leaving you vulnerable. In fact, I was all for letting you deal with the consequences of it on your own. You should be thankful that wasn't up to me and that cooler heads prevailed with it when came to such things.” Lowering his wand, he said, “Now, this is what is going to happen...Harry and I are going to be here for twenty-four hours. That's all. We'll either be in his room or out somewhere. You will be leaving us alone. If fact, you're going to pretend that we don't exist. We won't bother you and you won't bother us. Understand?” When he saw them nod warily, looking frightened, he told them, “You will also not get the bright idea to call the cops on me. Trust me, it won't work. I'm more than capable of taking on Muggle police, even if there are a lot of them. If you try it, all that's going to happen is you're going to get caught in the middle of the whole thing. You don't want that and the neighbors will talk about it forever if you do.”
“Now, after the twenty-four hours are up, we'll be gone. You will then be getting your wish; your nephew will be gone from your life forever. I don't give a shite what happens to you after that. The Order will try to help you before the wards fall next summer. I would suggest, if you want to keep your miserable lives, that you let them do that. If not, it's no skin off my arse. It will be your choice. So, just stay away from us until we leave. Got me?” Seeing them nod once more, Sirius then turned to Harry and grinned. “Come on, Harry. Let's go up to your room.”
Nodding, Harry grabbed his trunk to lead the way.
After one last glare at the two, Sirius trailed his nephew. When they got to the staircase, he cast a Locomotor on the trunk then followed Harry up the stairs.
