For the next month, the tension around the school was almost palpable. Aurors came to investigate what had happened to Draco and question the students. It was utterly nerve wracking when they would ask to see students in the middle of classes and the whispered conversations they were always having with teachers. The fourth floor corridor had been roped off for weeks as the Aurors investigated the classroom that Draco had been attacked in.
It was incredibly hard to continue with classes when something like that was going on in the background. Harry almost didn’t bother with trying. The Slytherins were seething constantly and the other houses were giving them as wide a berth as possible to avoid being lashed out at. A number of Hufflepuffs had become the scapegoats for the snakes’ anger and ended up in hospital wing for hexes and a few minor injuries. After that happened a few times, the other houses started going places in groups so as to not be cornered and lashed out at.
After a very long month, the Aurors were forced to leave without finding out who had attacked Draco. There simply hadn’t been anyone around to find out, all the portraits had been asleep in their frames, and there was no physical evidence that they could find. It certainly didn’t help that Draco reportedly didn’t know who’d attacked him. That rumor had spread like wildfire through the school and when the Aurors had to leave without finding the culprit it was assumed to be true. That did absolutely nothing to ease the fear among the students.
Knowledge that there could still be a rapist walking around in Hogwarts led to quite a few new security measures. The head of houses did head counts at curfew every night and then the common rooms were essentially locked down, ensuring that no student was alone in the corridors without protection. Trips to the village were now supervised as well and much like in third year, teachers were constantly on the prowl for anyone doing something that might lead to some heinous act. Snape was particularly bad about it.
The Potions Master seemed to be in a true rage over what had happened to his favorite student. He was taking points and giving detentions out so often it was practically a given that someone had detention that morning with Snape. All evening detentions had been moved to morning as yet another precautionary measure. For once he didn’t immediately focus in on Harry. Snape seemed to be looking for Draco’s attacker and dismissed Harry as a possibility immediately, though now he didn’t seem to be able to find a suitable replacement to punish. Oh, certainly he gave Harry several scoldings and took off hundreds of points, but he saved most of his venom for other ‘problem students’. Harry wouldn’t put it past the man to be using detentions to interrogate students for information or confessions.
Harry tried his best to let Snape and the other teachers and the Aurors figure out what happened to his greatest rival. But every time he remembered the last time he’d seen Draco. There had been such an unfamiliar look on the Malfoy Heir’s face it was stuck in Harry’s memory permanently. He’d seen so much raw pain there it had almost jumped through the air and carved out Harry’s own chest. He’d never expected to see something like that on Draco’s face and had been utterly unprepared for it. Nobody deserved to be in that much pain. Draco might have been a complete prat but he hadn’t deserved to be raped and left passed out in a classroom.
Harry fought the urge to try and figure out who’d done such a horrible thing, but found himself unable to do so. He couldn’t leave something like that alone no matter how many times he tried to talk sense into himself. That was how he found himself making a list of everyone in school that Draco got on the wrong side of. Harry instantly realized that he was probably the one who Draco fought the most with but since he certainly hadn’t done something so horrible he crossed his own name off immediately. With his own name off the list it still left an unfortunate number of names of people that Draco often clashed with. With his list in mind, Harry set to trying to find out who had attacked Draco.
It didn’t take long for Harry to realize that he had absolutely no real way of figuring it out though. A few people he could cross off the list fairly easily, Neville and Ron were scratched off immediately since Harry knew they’d been in the dorm all night. He crossed off all the girls since Draco had been attacked by another bloke. But almost everyone else he was having problems being sure didn’t attack Draco. He knew that another boy wasn’t even in school at the moment after a potion’s accident sent him to St. Mungos, so he was crossed off the list too. But that was about all he could do without asking questions. He didn’t figure people would be too keen to answer his questions about it though so Harry had to figure out how to find out who it could have been without being too blunt about it. Not his strongest suit to be certain.
Hoping that somehow the Aurors had missed something, Harry decided to go investigate the classroom himself. He knew that the room hadn’t been cleaned up because it was still roped off. He snuck out of his room using his broom and invisibility cloak with absolutely no trouble whatsoever.
He couldn’t help but be nervous as he snuck through the corridors to the fourth floor and down the hall to the proper classroom. He checked to be sure nobody was around on the Maurader’s Map before unlocking the door. Harry slipped inside the classroom and shut the door behind him as silently as possible. His eyes widened at the sight in front of him.
Desks were shoved every which way and some were even overturned. One desktop was partially broken and the chairs were mostly knocked over. Harry could still see the faint pink of where there had been blood on the floor and he suddenly wished he’d thought up some other way to try and figure out who’d done this. He didn’t want to see how violent it had been. Harry’s hand tightened reflexively on his wand as he tore his eyes away from the drops of red that were still across the chalkboard and several desks.
Harry quickly turned away to slip back out of the room. It had been a stupid idea to go to the classroom. If the Aurors hadn’t found anything he certainly wouldn’t find anything. Just before he could step outside Harry heard talking nearby. His eyes widened and he moved away from the door as silently as he could. He slipped under the nearest desk so that if someone did come into the room they wouldn’t somehow walk into him. Just because he was invisible didn’t mean he couldn’t be ran into.
The minutes seemed to last hours. Harry glanced at the map and made certain that the way was clear again. He waited until he saw Filch leave the fourth floor entirely before crawling out from under the desk. Harry was just about to push himself up when he spotted something under the cupboard in front of him. He frowned and summoned it to him with his wand since it was too far under it to reach easily.
An empty potion vial flew into his hand and Harry stared at it in confusion for several moments. What on earth was a potion vial doing here? It wasn’t anywhere near the dungeons and therefore the potion labs but he couldn’t imagine it having anything to do with what happened to Draco. It was just a glass vial after all.
Harry turned the vial over in his hands a few times before pocketing it and getting to his feet. He would figure it out later if the vial had anything to do with what happened or not. He checked the map one last time before slipping out of the room and relocking it. Then he silently made his way out of the castle so he could fly himself up to his dorm in the tower again. Harry sighed in relief once he was back inside of his dorm. Though it hadn’t been a long trip it had been more nerve wracking than he’d thought it would be.
“Where’ve you been?”
Harry jumped at the sound of Ron’s whisper. “Ron! Don’t do that! Nearly gave me a heart attack…” he whispered back as he stuffed his invisibility cloak back in his trunk. “I just had something I had to check out.”
“Harry, mate, it’s too dangerous to be wandering around after dark by yourself,” Ron said. “You shoulda woke me up.”
“I was under the cloak the whole time. Plus I had the map,” Harry said as he pulled his trainers off.
Ron didn’t look terribly impressed by that. “Where did you even go?”
Harry considered not telling Ron but Ron was his best friend. Harry sighed and sat down on Ron’s bed. “I went to the fourth floor.” Ron looked lost for a second and then his mouth dropped.
“Harry are you nuts?” he demanded in a whisper. “Why in Merlin’s name would you go there?”
“I had to check it out,” Harry said. “I can’t explain it, I just had to go there…”
Ron gave him a look that screamed he thought Harry had lost his mind. “W-Why? Harry that entire corridor is blocked off.” Harry sighed some and ran a hand through his hair. “This isn’t one of your ‘saving people’ things is it?”
Harry frowned at that. “I don’t have a ‘saving people’ thing. I just had to make sure they didn’t miss anything.”
“Uh huh…” Ron said, sounding rather disbelieving. “And did they?”
“Well… I don’t know,” Harry muttered before pulling out the vial. “I found this under the cupboard. It could be nothing though.”
“Looks like trash someone forgot to throw out,” Ron offered. “Next time, could you at least tell me when you’re gonna disappear? I was worried about you.”
Harry smiled at his friend’s concern. “Sure. Sorry I worried you,” he said as he put the vial in his side drawer and then shed the rest of his clothes. “But I’m beat. I’ll see you in the morning.”
Ron yawned widely and nodded. “Yeah, ‘night Harry,” he said as he laid back down.
Harry muttered his own goodnight and slipped into bed. He put his glasses off to the side and did his best to get some sleep. It wasn’t easy though. He kept seeing flashes of Draco’s pain filled eyes and the discolored tiles on the floor of the classroom. No matter what he told himself, he couldn’t let this sort of thing happen without trying to help. Even if he couldn’t find anything out about who had hurt Draco, he could find some other way to help. He would find some other way to help. He just had to think of something.
With that in mind, Harry closed his eyes and forced himself to fall into an uneasy sleep. Just because Draco Malfoy was his greatest rival and usually a complete arse didn’t mean that Harry was going to turn his back on someone who would most likely need his help. It just wasn’t in Harry’s nature.
