Sitting in his room late that night, Harry had the communications mirror Sirius had given him enlarged and it was something like 'stuck' to the foot board of his bed. This way, he didn't have to hold the thing or worry about it being so small that neither of them could see. It was one of the things, between the two of them, they had worked out the first couple nights he had it. Both of them really liked it and the conversations they had through it were now more like they were sitting in the same room together rather than something awkward the way it had been before. Along with that, Sirius had managed to come up with four very small owl statues that were basically warding stones. That meant that if Harry put them in the corners of his room, it not only created a ward around the thing that made it impossible to detect if any magic was used but kept all sounds from anyone that would pass by it. Though Harry had figured out some basic warding spells, this worked far better for him, making him relax about talking to Sirius.
Sprawled out on his bed, Harry had his laptop open and was trolling through his normal story sites for new uploads while talking to his godfather. In the week since first seeing Sirius, this had become the normal. Sirius, too, tended to do other things while they talked so it wasn't like they were just sitting there with nothing else to do. Knowing that his time with an internet connection was limited, something due to the fact that he had no idea when Dumbledore would decide to grant him a pardon and rescue him from this damned place, Harry was stocking up on all the stories he could find that he thought he would like. Later, as he started to read them, he could sort through them and junk the ones he didn't like. This was something he found worked well for him. It saved him the time of reading everything then downloading. Along with that, he had everything in case he decided it hadn't been worth downloading and want it later on. So, most of his time that he spent online, he spent snagging everything under the sun and sorting them later on. That worked well. Though the majority of what he grab was porn, he snatched normal stuff as well.
There were a couple sites starting to crop up on the web that dealt with stories out of copyright and you could download them for free. At this point, they were in their infancy, but there was still plenty on them he liked. Poe, Wells, Verne, things like that were stuff he snagged. Though old, they were always a great read that kept you interested, even if you'd read them before. As reading had always been an escape to him, he liked this. As they were always adding 'new' stories every day, he made sure to check to find some things he might like.
After starting a massive download of things from one of the Usenet newsgroups then beginning to print out some of his current 'favorites', Harry leaned over the side of the bed and snagged a bag of crisps from a box on the floor by his bed he kept food in. Tearing them open, he began to munch while settling back. Looking at the mirror, he followed along as Sirius talked about some pranks they had invented in school. Grinning, leaning back, he grabbed his open soda off the bedside table and took a sip. When his godfather was done, he commented, “With all you lot did in school, I’m surprised you had time to study, let alone pass!”
“Well, we did manage though I admit, other than Remus, we didn't do well.” Sirius laughed. “Honestly? Sometimes I wonder how James and I were accepted into the Auror program. We just managed to squeak in as it was. Remus was the bookworm and did well. The rest of us didn't.”
Shaking his head, Harry chuckled. “Yeah, I think I'm surprised there, too. I mean, it doesn't sound like you had much time for things like doing homework.”
“We made time here and there. Every so often Remus would get grumpy with us and we'd be forced to do something or he'd make our life a living hell. Sometimes I think that's the only reason we managed to get the OWLS and NEWTS we did. We had fun though! It's something that was great!” Sirius grinned.
Snickering, Harry shook his head again. “You're brilliant at magic so I imagine that's all that matters. Grades aren't a big thing anyway.”
“True! It's what you learn and how you apply it that matters, not the grade you eke out of something,” Black nodded. Stopping, he thought it over then said, hoping not to offend his godson, “I hear you're the same way. Severus says you're bloody brilliant and probably know more spells than most in the school, but your grades don't reflect that.”
“That's called letting everyone underestimate me,” Harry told him smugly. “I like it better that way. Let them think I'm a lazy git that's just average. I learn what I need then will do fine with the OWLS and NEWTS, but will be able to take care of myself.”
“I can completely understand that,” Sirius said with a nod. “As long as you know what you're doing, I don't see why, as long as you pass, that the grade matters.”
Snorting, Harry said, “It's not like I have anyone around that's going to complain about bad grades anyway. The Dursley's sure don't care. They wouldn't know what to even look at if I got my grades here. Nor would they care. The only thing they cared about when I was in school around here was that I didn't do better than Dudley. Beyond that, as long as I stay out of their way, they don't give a shite. Other than them, there isn't any family so I'm not worried about it. Hell, no one but me even looks at my grades.”
“I guess I didn't think about it that way,” Sirius sighed. “Remus said you did really well in his class, that you knew what you were doing. Not to mention being able to pull off the Patronus.” Stopping, Sirius looked down, scratching at his goatee, then asked, tone distracted, “What is your Patronus anyway? I think he mentioned something about it but I don't remember what it was. I never saw it, that's for sure.”
“Well, Professor Lupin was the best teacher we've had. The fake Moody was fine but, well, you know--” Harry shrugged. “And my Patronus is a Komodo dragon*. Big scary thing. I like it! Before you ask, that's a kind of monitor lizard. Huge thing.” Harry told him, grinning.
“I vaguely remember him saying it was some kind of lizard but couldn't remember what kind. What do they look like?” Sirius asked, looking into the mirror.
“Hard to describe, really. Most say they look like a modern dinosaur. Hell, some even call them that. You seen a Nile monitor?” When he saw Sirius nod, he continued, “It's similar to that only much bigger. They get to be like ten feet and about three hundred pounds. Massive thing. I'll find a good picture of one and print it out for you so you can see it. I think I can even find an encyclopedia article on them and snag that for you too. It'll give you a better feel for it. The Nile monitor isn't even close to how big the Komodo is.”
Trying to meld the images of what Harry was talking about, Sirius just shook his head then grinned, “Yeah, pictures would be good. Sounds massive though! Mean?”
“Let's just say that Hagrid would love one as a pet!” Harry laughed. “They are vicious top predators that don't even think twice about taking on a human.”
The Hagrid reference was enough to tell Sirius that the thing was not something you would want to mess with and he chuckled, shaking his head. “Seriously, Harry, sometimes I wonder how you got into Gryffindor. You just don't seem like the type. I mean, there is courage there, no doubt, especially since it takes a great deal to do what you have, not to mention realizing that you need to do things on your own. I would have thought, with what I know now, you would have gone elsewhere.”
“That whole thing was strange,” Harry told him, brow furrowed. “I mean, I get the Sorting Hat is an odd thing, don't get me wrong, but after talking to a few people, I think there was something up there.”
Looking at the mirror, Sirius asked, “What do you mean? Why don't you explain what happened and we'll see what we can come up with.”
“Well, you know what the thing is like. It was going over everything, talking, when it said I had plenty of courage but then it was yammering about Slytherin and how I had a great mind as well so I would do well in Ravenclaw. The debate seemed to be between the two of those with Slytherin leading. Finally, it did the whole 'well, I know what to do here' thing and just blurted out Gryffindor. It was strange. I mean, it didn't seem to even be thinking I should do the whole lion thing, more like between the Ravenclaw and Slytherin. I don't get it.”
Looking at the mirror, Sirius thought it over, not liking what he was thinking. Scrubbing a hand over his face, he shook his head then said, “Damn. That sounds hokey to me.”
“I thought so then and still do,” Harry said with a nod. “I mean, it didn't even much mention Gryffindor other than in the beginning but it puts me there when it went on more about Slytherin? Strange, that.”
“It is,” Sirius nodded. “Did you think you wanted to go into Gryffindor or something? I know that has an effect on the whole thing. It tends to take what you want into account and sticks you there.”
“No, I didn't. Hell, I didn't care where it stuck me at that point. Now, well, with what I know I probably would have asked for Ravenclaw to get me out of some of the crap going on. Either that or Hufflepuff, one of the two. I couldn't be arsed to care at that point. Really, the only thing I knew about the houses up 'til then was what Hagrid said about some. Since he wasn't a fan of Slytherin, it's the only bias I heard. Even then I didn't care. Though, honestly, it's probably best that I didn't go into Slytherin, despite how well I get along with Professor Snape. With the past, not to mention what is going on now? That wouldn't have gone well.”
“No, Slytherin is a bad idea!” Sirius told him firmly, nodding. “Severus would have protected you obviously, but there would have been problems, big ones!”
“There already are. From what I get there are plenty of strange rumblings about me spending time in the dungeons. Some of the snakes aren't real thrilled about me being down there with Professor Snape. They don't say much, especially where it can get back to him, but they don't like it. He won't tolerate it, of course, and makes that well known, but it's there. Malfoy is the only one that dares say anything and let the contempt show. Since Snape shuts him down and I'm more than capable of taking him on then coming out on top, he keeps it to a low grumble most times.” Harry shrugged.
“You and Draco still have the rivalry thing going then?” Sirius asked. That concerned him, especially with how he was involved with Lucius. He didn't want it to become an issue between them.
“I don't know what you would call it,” Harry shrugged. “On my end it's termed I can't be arsed to give a shite what he thinks about anything. As long as he leaves me alone and doesn't start with me, I don't give a rat's what he does. It's that simple. What it is on his end, I don't know. I dueled him once because Snape wanted me to. Since then, he's dropped a lot of the nonsense. I'm happy about that. Less for me to worry about.”
Nodding slowly, Sirius took that in, not saying anything.
Grinning slightly, Harry chuckled, “Honestly? I think his issue is that he's jealous about the relationship I have with Professor Snape. I kinda' get the feeling he has a 'thing' for the man. Don't get me wrong, I like Snape, but not that way. I have a feeling he's not something that I would want to get involved with. Just a feeling mind you. Honestly, it's one of those gut things that tells me he's the kind that wants to play a whole lot rougher than I could go. Don't ask me where that feeling comes from, it's just there.”
Having insider information on some of it, Sirius grinned, “I think you might be right, on both ends there, Harry.”
Arching an eyebrow, Harry looked at the mirror and grinned, then asked, “Is there something going on with them? I mean Draco sticks to Snape like glue and Snape seriously favors him.”
Not sure what to say, Sirius sighed then asked, “It stays between us?” Seeing Harry nod, he pressed on, “Yeah, there is. Nothing sexual yet, I don't think anyway. Age of consent isn't until fifteen and Draco is just about to turn that, so I don't think Snape would go there until then. I do think it's heading that direction though. Both of them seem compatible, anyway. And I hear things saying that it's pretty much a sure bet it's coming for a multitude of reasons. And, though I don't ask about such things because I really don't want to know, I do know Severus likes to play rough. He's quite the dominant personality. That would come into play.”
“Yeah, no rough like that for me,” Harry told him, wrinkling his nose and shaking his head. “I might be able to dance a lot of places, but rough in some areas I don't like.”
More out of curiosity than anything else, Sirius asked, “What do you mean by rough? Just, you know, wanting a definition here for the sake of figuring out what you mean by it.”
Thinking over what was asked of him, Harry wondered what he should say then decided it wasn't too far out there and shrugged. “Let's say no hitting, restraints or blindfolds. So not my thing. Even thinking about such stuff freaks me slightly.”
Considering what he knew of Harry's life and what he had been through, that made perfect sense to Sirius. “Yeah, I can see that myself. Not my 'thing' either. I know there is an attraction to such things by some, but I don't get it. Even before Azkaban it wasn't something I wanted to play with.” Stopping, Sirius then laughed and said, “You know it's strange to even be talking about someone thinking about a teacher that way, don't you, Harry? I know those in school do end up with crushes on some, though Snape isn't one that generally would be in that category. From my end, I can't see where he would be called anything close to good looking.”
Grinning, Harry couldn't help but chuckle himself then nod,” Yeah, alright, it's strange, I admit it! And, no, he's not the classical definition of good looking by anyone's standards, I don't think. There is something there though, if you go for that type. The voice is good however!” Shrugging, Harry glanced at Sirius and admitted, “My end it probably comes from the fact I fancy older men. Just my 'thing'.”
Taking that in and filing it away, Sirius chuckled then said, “Now, you know I gotta ask this! How old we talking here, Harry? Ancient old or other 'old'?”
“Not ancient, no!” Harry laughed. “Thirties to forties I like. Just my thing.”
Filing that away as another fact he now knew about his godson, Sirius nodded. It also made sense. Harry was far more mature than most his age so an attraction to older beings would be something that made sense since they were more apt to be at his maturity level. “Good, cause if you were talking Dumbledore's age, I don't know what I would do with you but it would involve an intervention at St. Mungos for a check of your mental health!”
“Ewww, too old!” Harry said, wrinkling his nose. “That's gross and will probably give me nightmares for weeks! Thanks, Sirius!”
“Don't mention it,” Sirius laughed.
Rolling his eyes, Harry said nothing as he heard the printer quit. Knowing that batch was done, he quickly found a good article on Komodos with pictures, then began to print it out. While doing that, he cued up the next batch of stories he wanted to print out then leaned back. “Alright, got the article on Komodos going. Will stuff it in the bag I keep the computer in and give it to you next time we can meet up.”
“Good, it'll give me a visual on it,” Sirius nodded. Hearing the strange noises from the thing Harry told him was a printer, Sirius observed, “It sounds like it's printing out a lot more than just something small. I mean, I know nothing about those things and it could be, but you were doing something before and it went on a long time.”
“Naw, doing more than that,” Harry admitted. “I have some stories I want to keep and read. Printing them out as well. That way, when I get to like Hogwarts where the computer doesn't want to work well, I have them and can do some reading. Nothing more than that.”
“That makes sense,” Sirius nodded. “What kind of stories? Like books or is it something else?” Honestly, when it came to that computer thing, Sirius was far out of his depths and knew fuck-all about it. However, it was something that Harry adored so he thought it was good to ask about it. He might get an understanding of what his godson was talking about then.
“I do have a lot of books I print out, yeah, but it's more than that. There are plenty of sites out there with stories written by amateurs. Those are mostly what I do.” Slowly, Harry began to walk his tech-naive godfather through amateur story sites and stuff like that.
Listening in, Sirius nodded slowly. This was something he was actually getting. Though he didn't understand about some of it, he got enough to actually be able to visualize what his godson was talking about. That helped. When Harry finished explaining, he asked, “What kind of stories are these? I mean, there are so many genres out there.”
“You name it, you can find it. They have everything,” Harry shrugged.
Unable to resist, Sirius grinned then asked, “The porn stuff too?”
Flushing slightly, grinning somewhat sheepishly, Harry nodded, “Yeah, that too.”
Laughing uproariously, Sirius said, “Let me guess, Harry-- that's what you're printing?”
Flushing more, Harry gave an uneven chuckle then said, quietly, “Yeah.”
“I love it! Yes!” Sirius laughed. “Shite, Harry, it's normal. Don't worry about it. And if you're printing some out for yourself, print me some too! Pick some good shite!”
“Define 'good shite' and what kind do you want,” Harry shot back, grinning.
“Well, what kind can you get?” Sirius asked, still looking at his godson, grinning.
“You name it, I can find it. Any kind of genre with whatever kink you want. With a plot, without, females with males, males with males, females with females and all combinations of it. What kind do you want?” Harry asked, looking back at him though still slightly flushed. Somehow he knew this wasn't normal but since Sirius was more like a friend than any kind of parental figure, he didn't let it bother him too much. After all, it was just some stories.
“Some of the male with males stuff. Find some good ones. I don't care what's in them except no BDSM. Not my thing, you know,” Sirius told him with a shrug.
Nodding, Harry told him, “Gotcha. I have some good ones. Try those and see what you think. You can go from there and tell me what you want after that.” Opening one of the folders he kept the more 'straight' stuff in, Harry quickly scrolled through the mass that was there and cued up several for printing. Leaning back, he said, “Got them ready to go. Will put them in a folder and give them to you next time we meet up.”
“Good! I haven't read things like that in a long time so I can't wait!” Sirius said, grinning.
“Just curious on the topic-- does the Wizarding World have porn? I mean, it's not like I would know about that or even where to look for it so I’m just curious,” Harry asked.
“They do, but the Muggle version is better,” Sirius told him. “Other than with Muggle movies of it, theirs doesn't move like ours does but it's much better. Shite, I can't stand our version. It's not very good. From the stuff I read, it's more like about the magic involved than the sex. I don't care about that shite if I'm reading something like that. Not to mention it all seems to have a thing about men with beards. Not that I mind those, but it gets old after a while.”
Nodding, taking that in, Harry decided he didn't want to ask any more questions about that topic. It was a strange one anyway, so he wasn't sure how much further he wanted to get into it with Sirius. Instead, he decided to change the conversation to something else. “I was curious about something,” Harry said, looking at his godfather. When he saw the man nod, he said, “I was wanting to look into animagus transformations. Since you did it in school, I was hoping you could point me somewhere to start looking into it. General information first then, if I decide to try, where to get how to go about it.”
“Oh, I can do that! Shite, I have the books here we used. I'll make sure I snag them then give them to you the next time we meet up. With that, I can even give an assist if you want to give it a shot. It's not easy, something you probably already know, but I think you can manage. You seem to have a damned good grasp of what you need to even start.”
“Oh, good! Yeah, I'd like those! It'll give me something to read besides what I'm getting online. From all I've heard, I think it's something I'd like to try,” Harry nodded.
“I'll help all I can. I think it's a damned good idea, actually,” Sirius told him.
“Along with that-- any idea when I’m getting out of here this summer? I mean, I don't want to stay any longer than I have to since I hate this place. With what's going on with the Ministry, I'm sure the longer I stay, the more of a chance there is going to be I'm going to get caught up in something. I'm trying to be careful, honestly, and am not going to do anything to drop myself into their hands, but I want out.”
“I'm trying, Harry. Already I'm bugging the shite out of Dumbledore about it. So is Remus. We've even enlisted Severus to do the same. He agrees that you need to be out of there. Between the three of us, we think we can get him convinced. Just be careful is all I can say. They have plenty of ways of finding out that you are doing magic outside of school and not all of them are the Trace either,” Sirius told him.
“I assumed they did,” Harry said with a nod, looking grave. Shaking his head, he said, “No, I’m making sure to be careful. I don't want to walk into whatever they are planning. If they try, it's going to be a battle to get me to do anything they want.”
“Good. Just keep on your toes, Harry,” Sirius warned.
Hopping back to the animagus topic while things printed, Harry began to ask general questions about that to get a feel for what was involved. Once that conversation started, it took on a life of its own and the two of them had fun talking until it got late and both needed rest.
* For those of you that might not know what a Komodo dragon is, here is the link to the Wikipedia article explaining what they are; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Komodo_dragon All I'm going to say is they are like something out of a nightmare. I do believe you can find plenty of videos online that show them as well, something that will give you a better feel for what they are and how vicious they can be.
