Chapter 3
The next morning at breakfast, he was sitting in his place at the teachers table, watching the students trickle in before classes. He saw his daughter enter and watched with a heavy heart as she sat down at the end of the table by herself. She was sitting alone for several minutes before several boys joined her, trying to engage her in conversation. She ignored them for the most part, giving only one word answers, or even just shaking her head. He noticed, with a smile, that she looked bored with them. What he didn’t notice was a dark haired boy from the Gryffindor table taking an interest in her.
“Who’s that?” Harry asked his friends as he sat down to eat breakfast. “That red haired girl over there at the Slytherin table.”
Hermione glanced over her shoulder, “Nicole Evans. First year,” she answered him. “The headmaster took her off somewhere last night, she looked very upset.”
“Hmm… she looks familiar.” Harry said, turning his attention to his food.
A few moments later, Snape noticed a blonde boy enter the Great Hall and survey the room. He smirked at his godson, always acting superior to everyone. The boy made his way to the Slytherin table, and to his surprise, the boy stopped next to Nicole. ‘Uh oh,’ he thought to himself. He watched as the boy crossed his arms and before he knew it, the other boys had gotten up and left. The blonde boy, Draco, sat down next to Nicole and tried to engage her in conversation.
“I’m Malfoy, Draco Malfoy,” the boy introduced himself.
“Nicole Evans. I’m sorry, but I would really rather be alone,” she told him, wishing he would go away.
“Now, don’t be that way. You would do well to make friends with me. I have lots of connections,” he said, running a finger up her arm.
She shook his hand off and stood, “I don’t care about your connections. I don’t care about making friends with you. Take your hands off of me and keep your lustful thoughts to yourself,” she yelled, drawing the attention of the entire Great Hall. Noticing that everyone was looking at her, she gathered her books and stormed towards the exit. Draco looked after her, stunned. Snape looked on, concerned at his daughter’s reaction, but also thrilled to see that she could hold her own with the boys. He got up quickly and cut off her retreat.
“Miss Evans, do I need to give you a detention for creating a disturbance in the Great Hall? Classes haven’t even begun yet, what could possibly make you yell out like that.” Snape asked her.
“I’m sorry, sir. It’s just a little overwhelming, this being the first day of classes. I’m just nervous. I apologize for my outburst. It won’t happen again.” Nicole said to him, imploring him with her eyes to understand what she meant.
“Very well, be sure to keep your temper under control from now on,” he said, making sure that he pushed his feelings of love to the forefront so that she would know that he wasn’t angry with her.
She smiled, “Thank you, sir. I will try harder,” she said and then left to find her first class. Her father had understood her and he wasn’t angry with her. She was getting overwhelmed by the lustful feelings around her. Those were almost the hardest to push aside. Physical pain was the hardest emotion that she had encountered to push aside. She hoped no one got hurt here. She wasn’t sure she could deal with that just yet. She still had to work hard to keep all the emotions at bay. She looked down at her schedule and noticed that she had Potions first. Well, that was a relief; her father would be able to help her keep calm.
Nicole went about her day, her first class was very successful in helping her calm down and keep the emotions of the other students pushed back allowing her to concentrate. She had earned a few points for her house and was asked to stay after class for a moment. Her father asked her to meet him in his rooms after dinner, giving her a pass to allow her to be in the corridors at that time.
“So, how was your first day?” Severus asked his daughter.
“It was good, well, it got better after breakfast,” she told him.
“What happened at breakfast?” he wondered.
“Well, emotions are funny things. Most of them are simple to push aside. I have only had trouble pushing back the physical pain feelings before. Well, now I have come up against a new emotion and it’s been harder to overpower it. Lust; I’ve never felt it before today and it just surprised and overwhelmed me. All those boys were feelings lustful things and I was having a hard time pushing it aside. It may take a while, but I’ll get it, father. I am very sorry for creating a scene, though. I just couldn’t take it anymore, and then the Malfoy boy touched me and it just set me off. His feelings were the strongest. I was having a hard time getting around them. The rest of the day, I had no trouble,” she explained.
“Well, Draco is a good kid. He means no harm; it’s all a front to put on for show. He’s got the best heart. As for the others, I don’t know much about them. I would try to stay away from them. I’m glad you had a good first day. I know controlling your empath powers is hard for you. If it gets to be too much again, just walk away and find someplace to be by yourself for a bit, maybe that will help,” he offered. “You may come here any time you wish to be alone. It’s protected, and you know the password.”
“Thank you, father, I know things will get better. It’s getting easier to control my powers. I haven’t had a vision here yet, so maybe those will stay away,” she said. “Well, if that’s all, father, I think I may turn in. This day has been a bit more exhausting than yesterday was.”
“Of course, Nicole, I know you are tired. Please, let me know if there is anything you need,” he told her. She nodded and left the room.
The days passed, getting control of this new emotion she was feeling from people became easier. Nicole made a few friends, even talked with Ginny more, even though they were in rival houses. She attended Quidditch matches and cheered for her house team. She was relieved that she was able to get away from all the emotions over the Christmas Holidays. The break was just what her mind needed. It was getting easier to control her empath power, but that didn’t mean that it wasn’t still taking a lot out of her. The summer holidays were wonderful as well. Her father took her on a trip to Paris and they spent a great few weeks just checking out everything.
The years passed by much the same. Nicole’s life was quiet, even though her brother was having adventure after adventure. During her third year, the Tri-Wizard Tournament took place. During the last event, Harry had an experience like no other. The Dark Lord returned and chaos would soon follow.
Severus was sitting in his rooms, reading over essays from one of his classes. Harry knocked on his door and was allowed entry. “What is it Potter?” the professor snapped.
“Sir, I’m sorry to bother you, but I had a question,” Harry began.
“Well, spit it out Potter, I don’t have all night,” Severus snapped again, hating himself for doing so. He hated this front he had to put on sometimes.
“Tell me about my sister,” Harry said softly.
Severus was expecting anything but this. How in the world had Harry found out about Nicole? “How…?” he began.
“My parents. I saw them when I fought Voldemort the other day. My mother told me to take care of my sister and when I was confused she told me to talk to you about it. So, what do you know about my sister?” the boy explained.
Snape let out a breath that he hadn’t realized he was holding. “I didn’t realize that she was aware of your sister,” he began to tell the story. “Your mother was pregnant when the Dark Lord killed her. The child lived, just as you did, protected by some magical force that is not known. Anyway, I found the child and took her in and raised her. She knows that you are her brother and has been keeping her distance, or trying to, from you. I didn’t want you to know who she was, her powers are growing and she’s having a hard time controlling them. I’ve tried helping her the best way I know how, but I’m not sure it’s enough.”
“Nicole,” Harry muttered the name. Looking up at the man who hated him, “She’s my sister, isn’t she. Of course she is, she looks exactly like our mother,” he thought out loud. “I’m right, aren’t I? Nicole is my sister.”
Snape looked at Harry for a full minute in silence before nodding his head slightly. Knowing that he couldn’t keep the truth from Harry any longer, “Yes, Potter, Nicole is your sister. She has some very unique powers that take effort to control. I kept her in the house for 11 years, because being in a crowd is difficult for her. Being here at school is taking a toll on her mind. She comes in here several times a week just to get away from everyone.”
“What powers does she have?” Harry asked.
“I can feel the emotions of everyone around me. Well, for a while it was those around me, but lately it’s been getting worse. I’ve been feeling things from people who are miles away. It gets a bit overwhelming at times.” Nicole spoke, coming in to the room to have some quiet time. “I overheard your conversation. I’m sorry, father, I didn’t mean to listen in.”
“It’s quite alright, child. I understand. Well, Potter, now you know about your sister. However, being an empath is not the only power she has. She also has visions, not entirely like a seer, though. She has to be touching an object or person to have the vision. Have you been having any of those, Nicole?” Snape spoke quietly to his daughter. He hated to raise his voice near her.
Nicole shook her head, “No, father, I haven’t had any visions here at school. It’s only the empath power that gives me trouble. I was hoping to get some peace here for a while,” Nicole said quietly.
“Certainly, child,” Severus said, gesturing for her to have a seat. “Mr. Potter, is there anything else?”
“Well, yeah, why did you raise her? Why did you never come and get me?” Harry asked.
Severus sighed, “Well, I’m sure that Dumbledore has told you of the protection that your mother instilled when she died for you. That protection had a catch, so to speak. The protection only works with the ones who took you in. Your aunt and uncle took you in to their home, so your protection applies only while there. I took Nicole in, so her protection applies in my home. Now that you know about your sister, I will agree to allow you to stay with us during part of the summer holidays. You must go back to the Dursley’s for a certain amount of time first, though. That is how the protection works. I will speak with Dumbledore about this. It will allow you to get to know your sister away from school. I do ask that you not let anyone know that you have a sister. This is not knowledge that we want to get out at this moment. That is why you were never told before. For your safety as well as hers, the Dark Lord must never know that she exists. It is imperative that your relationship is kept a secret, Harry. Do you understand?”
“Well, I don’t really understand why, but I will keep it secret. No one will find out from me. I promise, sir,” Harry vowed. “I would like to spend some time with her, though, to talk and get to know each other. It’s weird knowing that I have a sister.”
“Very well, you may spend Christmas holidays with us at my home. You will be free to speak about anything there.” Snape said. “Now, if you don’t mind, Nicole needs some time away from emotions. I’ve become quite good at keeping my emotions calm in her presence, but you have not.”
“Yes, sir, I’ll go now. I’m sorry, Nicole, I will try to keep my emotions under control around you. You may have to help me learn how to do that, sir,” Harry said and then left the room.
Nicole let out an audible sigh when he left, taking his emotions with him. “I’m sorry, father. I’m glad that you can block outside emotions here, it makes it easier for me to calm myself. Thank you,” she said, closing her eyes. He turned back to the essays he was reading, leaving her alone with her thoughts. Soon, he heard her even breathing and smiled, knowing that she had fallen asleep. Silently making his way over to her, he conjured a blanket and covered her sleeping form with it, making her more comfortable on the couch. He would leave her there until she woke on her own, even if it meant all night. He missed seeing her in the mornings before putting on his façade.
Nicole awoke the next morning, finding herself in her father’s living room on the couch. She found that it was morning and she had managed to sleep the entire night, something that rarely happened, since people’s dreams are connected with their emotions. She rarely had a night when she was able to sleep away from all the emotions in her dorm room. Hearing a noise behind her, she turned to find her father watching her. “Good morning, child,” he said.
“Good morning, father. I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to fall asleep here. Why didn’t you wake me?” she rambled.
“I wanted to take care of you, if only allowing you to sleep. I know that you don’t sleep well in your dorm and I hate that. I didn’t want to disrupt your much needed rest,” he explained. He told himself that he would discuss the situation with Dumbledore at the first opportunity. “Run along now, before everyone else is up and sees you aren’t in your dorm. I’ll see you in class later.”
“Yes, father. Thank you,” she said before rushing off to her dorm before the others were awake. Grabbing some clean clothes and heading for the shower, she began to think about her brother. He now knew about her, she wondered how that would affect things. They were in different houses, only had a few classes together, but she knew that he hung around with the Weasely kids and she was still friends with Ginny.
After her shower, she went down to breakfast. Entering the Great Hall, she surveyed the room quickly. Already the emotions were running rampant and she was fighting for control. She spotted her father at the teacher’s table and nodded slightly to him. Making her way to her house table, she felt eyes on her. Casually looking around, she spotted Harry staring at her. Ignoring him, she sat down and filled a plate for herself.
Over the Christmas holiday, the brother and sister spent time getting to know each other and Severus left them alone mostly. They spent Christmas Day as a family, surprisingly to Harry. He had never seen this side of Snape. He was actually a nice man, so different from the person he was at school. Nicole and Harry became friends, telling each other about their lives growing up. Snape worked with Harry, trying to help him suppress his emotions around Nicole. Back at school, they pretended to be strangers
