AN: Second update of chapter three to my four part series. Here's what's new in Mozambique.
n: Happy to please and I'm trying to get one of these up every month, but school is de-damn-manding. Charlie has quite a lot to learn about the men of the village, but I think Zuri will be a big help, and, yes, she's very cute.Chapter Three: Courtship DanceThe temperature rose to a dry heat that sapped the body of energy and made everyone slow and laggard, especially one not accustomed to such weather. With the blessings of the King, Charlie returned to his assigned room at just passed noon and when he sat on the bed, Zuri jumped off of his shoulder and onto his case. She scolded him harshly and he suppressed a chuckle."I apologize for keeping you out so long. Are you hungry?"
Zuri became silent and regarded him with a tilt of her head. Her eyes, complete with two sets of lids, blinked at him in contemplation. When she seemed to have come to a decision, she scurried up his arm and stood on his shoulders, her front paws on his head, where she promptly thumped him.
"Ow," he cried out and the little dragonette returned to the case where she regarded him again. This time, her gaze was so intense that Charlie was reminded of his occlumency lessons with Grandfather Septimus. The creature looked through him and he was aware of her presence inside of his mind.
"Do never anger people king."
"Woah! That was you?"
"Do never anger people king!" she repeated. "King very, power great."
"The king is powerful, I know."
"King want fire-dragon-man in his clutch."
"His clutch? His family?"
"Mate with youngling, makes part of clutch."
"He wants me to mate with Kenzei? But, I'm with Chris."
"Fire-dragon-man belong with Drow Princeling of other clutch. Dragon-man is full with scent of Chris Drow."
"Thanks," Charlie felt his face flush with color.
"Chris Drow must win battle for dragon-man. Zuri will help."
"So, you are called Zuri?"
"Dragon-man named Zuri. Zuri is name." The tone she used made Charlie chuckle. "Zuri must go."
"You're leaving?"
"Au Wera spy on people king."
Before Charlie could speak again, Zuri disappeared and was gone from his mind. He sighed loudly and fell back onto the bed, determined to have a nap and forget about it all for a while.
A rustling sound woke Charlie and he opened his eyes and looked around the little room. "Zuri?" he mumbled, seeing the end of an Au Wera tail hanging from the top of the room's only cabinet. The little beast turned sharply and stared at him. “I thought you went to spy on the People King?”The tiny dragon turned a salmon pink and scurried down the side of the cabinet and up onto Charlie's chest. As it stared directly into his face, Charlie realized that it was much smaller than Zuri. “Hello. Who are you?”
The tiny Au Wera blinked and shook itself like a wet puppy. It turned so dark that it nearly looked black with purple highlights and its eyes were deep navy blue as they regarded him. It leaned way forward and flexed its wings out behind it. Charlie hadn't even noticed the wings on the female, but now that he thought about it, she had probably just kept them folded along her back.
“So, Beautiful. Do you have a name? Or, should I just give you one?” The lizard tilted his head and watched Charlie, but didn't seem hostile, so the man decided to assume it had agreed. “Okay, you are quick and curious. You don't scare easily and I think you're a prince among your kind. I'll call you Dashing.”
As it leaned forward and rubbed the top of its head on Charlie's stubbly chin, Dashing crooned and flashed images into Charlie's mind. The wizard assumed they were Dashing's, since many of them took place outside of Charlie's memory.
He was flying over mountains he'd never seen before, angling against the sun to protect his sensitive eyes. He was flanked by his brothers and father, since he was the smallest and needed protection.
Suddenly, the sky grew dark as something huge and dangerous flew overhead. He was afraid to look up and concentrated on making a speedy dive down to the tree level. Before the first branches could protect them, Dashing heard a screech to his right and his brother, who kept mainly blue colors, disappeared.
Father, who was mostly gold or yellow, called for them to hurry and Dashing made for the thickest branches, driven along by the screams of his other brothers from behind him.
He was the smallest, but also the fastest, and when he was safely within the tightly woven trees, he turned back to see the retreating form of the black dragon, but no where were his family to be found.
Dashing had searched for days, but finally decided he was alone. He found Zuri, just as he reached maturity, and she took him as a mate.
Charlie drew a long breath, when he was abandoned by the thoughts of the little Au Wera male. “That was scary. I've never seen a dragon like that one. I've seen a few black ones, but never so completely dark and sinister looking. Have you seen it since then?”
Dashing cocked his head, turned a soft blue, and Charlie felt the thoughts tap gently on his mind. “If I had, I would not have survived.”
“I suppose you are right. So, you are Zuri's mate? I'm pleased to meet you. Will you be staying with me for the rest of my day?”
“Dashing watches dragon-man until Zuri returns. Dashing helps Chris Drow to win battle for dragon-man.” Dashing leaped into the air and flew over to the window, looked around and then flew back to land on Charlie's shoulder. “People-princeling comes to take dragon-man for feeding. Dashing stays right here.” and with that he disappeared from sight. Charlie chuckled and stood to shake his robes out and smooth the wrinkles that had accumulated.
There was a tapping at the door and he opened it to find Kenzei standing there. “It is feast time, Charlie Weasley. Come, we have prepared out best for you.”
“Okay.”
A feast was the right word for the abundance of food arrayed before them. Charlie was seated between Halla'an and the shaman wizard and his plate was filling rapidly as each suitor brought a tray of their specialty for him to try and introduced themselves. He took small helpings of each and tasted them so that he would remember who cooked which of the delicacies, but he was soon full and staring at the plate that he couldn't empty.
Chris had made a dish of fresh vegetables with a dressing he learned from his mother. Kenzie had cooked a wild boar that he had killed that morning while everyone slept. Most of the others were proclaiming it to be the best meat ever, but Charlie's piece was burned on one side and tough to eat. He chewed the first bite until it was soft enough to choke down and didn't touch any more. Kenzei glared at him, but Charlie ignored him as the shaman spoke to him.
“What is your impression of our village, so far?” The man's name was Obadie something.
“Oh, I like it. The pyramids are amazing and the markets are so colorful and exciting. I wanted to buy some presents for my family and I got good ideas from just walking through it.”
“Ah, so you will be needing an escort?”
“I could go by myself. I don't want to put anyone to trouble.”
“No, it is necessary. Until you have chosen, you must not be un-chaparoned. I will speak with Halla'an about who can take you to the market. Most of the council will be in meetings until late today.”
“Oh, I could wait for a day or two. My family won't mind.”
“Nonsense.”
Obadie arrived just after the dinner nap to take Charlie on his shopping trip. The man was an amazing haggler and he got good deals for the British wizard. He bought some beautiful cloth for all of the women in the family and some amazing boots for Ron, Ginny and the twins to wear while playing quidditch. For Bill, who didn't play much anymore, and Percy, who never had, he bought some rare and interesting potions vials and ingredients.
Since the shaman had assured him that their delivery system was unequaled, he wasn't concerned about the leaves and fruit spoiling, so he also bought baskets full of produce and had it all sent within an hour.
By the time evening had fully settled around them, Charlie was too tired to think of anything but sleep. He fell onto his bed, barely noticing that Dashing had been joined by Zuri, and the two took turns watching him sleep.
The new day began with the sound of Zuri scolding her mate. “The people king son did wrong. He broke rules.” Dashing defended.“What rules?”
“People men were supposed to cook meal for dragon-man. People king son caught running beast and had others cook it.” the little lizard sounded smug. “Dashing made right.”
“People men always cheat. Dashing interfered. Dashing could get caught. Zuri would lose Dashing.” Though her words were harsh, Charlie detected worry in her tone.
“Dashing never get caught by people men!”
At this, Zuri crooned softly and Charlie cracked an eye open to see her nuzzling the smaller male with her head under his chin. The dragonette prince looked as smug as he had sounded earlier.
“Could you two get a tree or something?” Charlie made the complaint with as little force as possible and was soon under loving attack by a pair of chirping little flying lizards.
“The dragon-man is awake. Dashing must tell of people men and party.”
“Dashing must be quiet. Not get people men to come in hut.” Zuri put one clawed hand on her mate's head and held him down, bowed a little in front of her, and Dashing went silent.
“I'd like to hear what's going on.” Charlie offered and the male's eyes looked up from his position. Zuri eyed him, as well, and finally released her mate.
“Tell dragon-man and then go watch people king.”
“People men will fight. Winning people men will take dragon-man to big flames and have dancing.”
“Wait. There's gonna be a fight and the winner gets to take me on a date? Oh, I so do not like this. I need to stop it, right away. I'm not a prize for some behemoth's show of strength and brutality.” Charlie rose so quickly the Au Wera had to fly to their perches to avoid being thrown into a wall or stepped on. When he had stripped off his sleep clothes and pulled on some cool robes, Charlie ventured through the door, not noticing the larger Au Wera on his shoulder and the smaller flying out through the window.
Chris had not slept as well as his lover, especially as his dinner was disagreeing with him most of the night. His room, in the large pyramid, was complete with a private bathroom, where he had lost the majority of his meal down the commode and spent a few hours staring at the wall while his system regained control. Now, he was better, and had slept a few hours, but still couldn't shake the residual nausea he had fought all night. He was not one of the scheduled contestants in today's event so he could afford to spend some time in bed, but he would rather be there to watch as Charlie discovered the events that had been planned. It was sure to be quite a sight.
Before he was dressed and ready, while he tied on his dragon-hide boots, a small projectile came through his window and knocked him to the floor. He was about to pull his wand and send off a few defensive spells when he realized what had attacked him and was currently attached to him.
Clinging to his outer robes, with tiny clawlike fingers, was a small Au Wera, that was obviously not the same female he had seen with his intended. “Greetings, little prince. Are you a friend, or enemy?”
Chris sat up, watching the tiny green dragon and careful not to upset it, and when he was leaning against the wall, it spread its wings and launched off of him, to perch on top of his wardrobe. He laughed at its antics as it marched along, stopping to glare at him every few steps, but when he did it leaped from its perch and was once again attached to his robes.
“So, I am in trouble now, yes?”
The Au Wera looked deep into his eyes and realization struck with the echo of words in his head. “You must win dragon-man. Zuri sends mates to help.”
“Ahh, then you must be one of Zuri's mates. Do you have a name, little one?”
“I have none.”
“Then, I will call you Msaidizi. Since you have come to help.”
“We meet Dashing at cone of meeting.”
“Cone of meeting? Oh, the administration pyramid. Let us go, but I would like to hurry, so I can be there when my Charlie finds out about the competition for today.”
“Chris Drow must not do fighting. Zuri tells mates to keep dragon egg safe.”
“Huh? I'm not fighting. Oh, let's just go.”
Dashing and Msaidizi flew circles over Chris' head, agitated by the activity below them. They were far from the confrontation, high on a platform intended for the supervisors of the fight. Far enough that stray spells would not reach them, but this did not calm the little dragonettes.“Shhh. I cannot hear. Stop, or someone will hear you.” this convinced the two males to land on Chris' shoulders an cock their heads to listen with him. Below, Charlie was glaring at Halla'an and the other drow politician. “I don't care. I won't be used as a prize for your gambling exhibits. If you decide to do this, I will eliminate anyone who participates, just for that reason. I'm not won over by martial arts or boxing matches and I don't want to be courted by someone who uses brute strength to prove themselves. I won't chose someone who uses their magic, either. So, no duels. Throw rune cubes or something that relies on chance, but no physical or magical competitions to chose who gets a turn to romance me.” He crossed his arms and glared even harder. “It's just barbaric.”
Halla'an sighed and turned to the other men. They spoke together for a few moments in their native tongue, which Charlie could only catch a few words of, and came to some agreement.
“A breaking of shells.” The king's brother said and Charlie waited for a better explanation. “The shells of the dragon eggs are unpredictable. Some break easily, others take more effort. Each contestant will chose a shell, and the number of attempts it takes to break the piece down to the size of a cacao nut will determine their place in line for a chance to show their worth.”
“Great. At least it sounds fair, even though its still stupid.”
The shells were brought out and the twelve contestants from the fight were given a choice. The breaking began and soon the list was made. All twelve would be allowed a half of an hour with him at the evenings fire and dance. Charlie sighed as he saw the line-up to woo him.
First on the list was Kenzei. It was going to be a long night.
