Chapter 2
Shaking his head and rubbing a hand over his mouth, Remus just looked at Sirius, not sure what to say. Arthur was sighing heavily and looking down, rubbing his eyes. Sirius had just filled them in on what they had learned over the last couple days from Lucius and it was blindsiding. “This is a mess. A right ruddy mess,” the werewolf said finally, shaking his head.
“You don't have to tell us that,” Sirius snorted, chuckling slightly. Holding on tightly to Harry, who was leaning back against him, he added, “It's all we have so far. Malfoy knows I'm going to tell you, so it's not something that he'll be upset about.”“I assume you have a way to ensure he's telling you the truth,” Arthur said, looking at the man before taking a sip of the Muggle soft drink Harry had given him.“It's the truth,” Sirius confirmed with a nod. “I have a way of doing that because of some of this. And, by now, he knows the consequences for betrayal. He actually goes very pale at the mention of those, so he's read enough on the topic that I doubt he would chance it.”“Now what do we do?” Remus asked, looking between all of them.“That is a good question and one I'm clueless about,” Sirius told him honestly. “It's a bloody nightmare, is what it is. None of us know what to do here.” Glancing at his godson, who was looking over his shoulder at him, he said, quietly, “The connection won't go away now that it's activated. Malfoy is following the lead, which means it's going to end up the way ours did. I doubt there's going to be any backing away from it. Which means, one way or another, we're going to end up together and not be able to be separated. Which is the heart of the whole problem.”“Sirius—I don't know what to do here,” Arthur told him honestly, shaking his head. “This is beyond anything we could have planned for. There is no way that Lucius is going to allow himself to be put in Albus' hands. And I don't see either of you willingly walking to He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named even if you're assured protection. Then, if you all just vanish, everyone is going to look for all three of you.”“No shite,” Sirius chuckled mirthlessly, shaking his head. “Right now, we're not even talking about what to do, honestly. We're more working with what is there and learning what we can. However, Harry and I have figured out a couple things and it leads to a bigger mess than before. Mostly, we're in a wait and see pattern as to what's going on. The chunk with Peter is what we're mostly waiting for. If he ends up in the hands of the Ministry, I’m going to lean towards looking in that direction in some way. Because, even if it does end up with me being cleared, both Harry and I don't think Albus is going to be content to let him stay with me. He's going to work something out here to ensure we're apart. And that's just not possible anymore. It might be for like a week. After that, both of us are going to suffer enough it'll be like torture.”“Albus has already come to me about taking Harry for the summer,” Arthur told him quietly, looking around the table. “He said it would be before his birthday and probably right after the beginning of the month. I've put him off with the standard excuse of I'll talk to Molly about it, something I always do, but he's not going to hold off long. And when I say no he's going to start to wonder what's going on. We won't even talk about what Molly is going to say about it.” Stopping, the man sighed and shrugged, “I'm not going to do it because of the connection. There is no way to hide that and I know it. If Harry comes, you have to as well. We don't have the room for that. We could make room, that I'm sure of, especially with Fred and George gone, but there would be no way to hide what's going on. Not to mention it's going to seem very strange that you're sticking to him like there is a charm on both of you. Then there is Ginny. No, we can't.” Looking at Harry, he smiled and added, though he was sure the young man knew, “You are always welcome with us, Harry, you know that. This has nothing to do with that.”“I know,” Harry smiled.“You have any idea what to do, Sirius?” Remus asked, looking at his old friend.“None,” Sirius told them softly with a shake of his head. “Hell, I didn't have a clue what to do when it was just me and Harry, to be honest. This makes it worse, that's for damned sure.”Thinking it over, looking down at the picnic table they were sitting at, Arthur asked, “You said something about you figured some things out. What are those?”“First is those damned Blood Wards that Albus is always going on about. We've figured out that Lucius can get through them because of the connection. That's rather easy, honestly. As he can't betray us, we're not worried about that. The other problem is that we actually think You-Know-Who can too, if Lucius is being honest about what he's said.”Eyes widening, Remus looked at Arthur, who looked slightly shaken at that. “How did you figure that out? Lucius—well, that part makes sense.”“Think about what Albus always says; those are there to protect Harry from the ones on that side that want to do him harm. If it's as Lucius says, You-Know-Who isn't trying to harm him. That means he can probably get through. Those wards won't be fooled by someone saying that but meaning the opposite. Right now, it's not something I want to chance, that's for damned sure, but it's there.” Sirius explained.“You're right,” Remus said, shaking his head. “Which means all of this forcing Harry to be here is for naught. As is all the running around trying to protect him.”“Which we can't say, because then we would have to give up why we think that is,” Arthur added dejectedly.“Yeah, we have to keep playing this game, that's for sure,” Sirius said, looking between the two. “The next is the chunk with the 'gifts' the bond gives. Mine and Harry's we've figured out, as we told you. We now have Lucius' as well. He can actually smell magic on people and objects. It's just starting, so he's working with the beginning on it, but he can now tell the difference between a non-magical object and a magical one with his eyes shut by just taking a deep sniff. What it will evolve into we don't know. We know the two of ours keep evolving to where we can do other things with them.”“Very strange,” Arthur said, shaking his head.“Yeah, we admit that,” Sirius conceded. “It's not something I've heard of before, actually. However, those are just the ones we do have figured out here. There is a shite-tonne we don't. Like just what the connection is with Harry's scar, how to deal with this whole mess and more beyond that.”“Does Lucius know anything about the scar and the connection?” Remus inquired, looking at Harry's forehead.“No, actually, beyond the fact that there is a connection of some kind,” Sirius told him. Shaking his head, he imparted, “From what he's told us, even the other side of the connection doesn't understand it or where it's from. We get that it happened that night, but what caused it is a mystery. Hell, Lucius has been bringing books over to try spells to see if we can't figure it out. He's tried all kinds by now and all of them are coming up negative. From what he’s told us, You-Know-Who doesn't have an idea anymore of where to even look. Between the two of them and Narcissa, they came up with the idea that, maybe, Harry was made into something called a Horcrux that night. Lucius brought the spell over to test that and it came back negative. Which leaves everyone stumped.”“What is a Horcrux?” Arthur asked, brow furrowed.“You don't want to know,” Harry told him, pulling a sour face and shivering.“Very dark magic,” Sirius said shaking his head. “It involves murder and splitting your soul. Rather disgusting to read about, let me tell you.” Stopping, he sighed and said, “This is one of those areas that we think Albus may know something about and we need to get it out of him. We just don't know how. Honestly? We think Snape does too. That's someone it would be even harder to get it out of. We need to know, though. It's obvious Albus knows something because of those damned lessons last year. And he sure as hell didn't tell Harry why. Then there is the fact that Albus said Snape told him You-Know-Who is blocking the connection from his end. Lucius told us, bluntly, that's not true, that he can't. He's also not sure why the connection does what it does. Other than the visions about this last mess, he can't control what goes through and it's so random it makes no sense. Which leaves us with less than naught when it comes to figuring it out.”Listening in, Harry's head then came up and he said, “Lucius is coming.”Looking in the direction where Lucius always approached from, Sirius confirmed, “He is.” A glance towards the two with them told him they were now very apprehensive so he said, “Don't worry about it. He knows we were going to have you two around when you could get here.”Looking at Arthur, who appeared as uptight over this as he was, Remus nodded then glanced over his shoulder. So far, he couldn't see or sense anything. The ward around this small area of the play park also wasn't something you could see through so he was just going to take their word for it. Shaking his head, he sighed then went back to the topic at hand, “I agree; we need what Severus and Albus know here to work with this. It might not give us the answers we need, but it can either rule something out or maybe slide a piece into place.”“We agree,” Sirius told him. “What Harry gets matches nothing Lucius could find. And I mean nothing. Narcissa and You-Know-Who even helped look from what he said and they can't match it either. Pieces match several things, but all together they get nothing. We've even tried to work with stuff that matches only a couple things and it's nadda. The Parselmouth is what's throwing everyone. The only thing it would match was the Horcrux bit. And that's been ruled out, as I said.”
Stepping through the standard ward Black put up, Lucius was apprehensive at seeing Lupin and Arthur there. He knew this was coming, of course, as Black had made it clear that the two would be over at some point in the week to be filled in on what was going on. It just made him tense to finally deal with it.
Walking over, he seated himself by Harry and nodded to the two across the table. Looking at Black, he asked, “I assume this is about catching them up with what is going on?”“It is, nothing more than that,” Sirius told him. “We're talking about the connection right now. I think we've gone through most everything else, at least that I can think of.”“Any luck on their end with the connection and what might be happening?” Lucius asked, looking at the two.“Nothing,” Sirius told him with a shake of his head. “The only thing we have is that Albus and Snape might know something. That's not at all helpful as we don't even have a leaning as to what that might be.”“Very true,” Lucius sighed.Though reluctant to deal with Lucius as he didn’t personally trust the man, Remus was going to take what Sirius said and go with it. Quietly, he asked, “Could the Parselmouth part have come through the family line and just been a latent trait that finally manifested? We all know that most Purebloods are interrelated in some way. It's also being touted that most Muggle-born wizards and witches are probably descended from squibs that come from Pureblood lines. I'm not familiar with the family history when it comes to Harry's side, so I don't know if there are any instances of this in the past.”Thinking that over, Lucius finally said, “It's worth checking into. Let me see what we can find. The Potter line will be easy, I would think. Lily's side is where I'm not hopeful about coming up with anything. I'll pass that along to see what we can determine.” Stopping, he shook his head then said, sighing as he did, “It may be, I'll give you that. However, it also may be a case of whatever connection this is took a trait that may have lain dormant for centuries before it would to come to the forefront and activated it. I don't know. We're honest in saying we're not even sure that what's manifested already is all there is. We just don't know as Harry hasn't explored much on his end with it. The Dark Lord is reluctant to explore more as well since he doesn't want to upset Harry or cause him harm in any way.” That wasn't something he would normally say, but he had the Dark Lord's permission to do so and felt that Black was going to fill the two in anyway.“You do that,” Sirius said, nodding. Quickly, he filled the man in on what they had learned then shook his head. “We're just going to wait and see here then decide when the time comes because we have no clue what to do about this or how to go about it.”Muttering a mild swear word and heartily cursing Dumbledore under his breath, Lucius shook his head. Trying to think, he said, tone distracted as an idea began to form, “How about this—let me look into seeing if I can purchase a chunk of property that we can use to get you both to when the time comes. I can do so under a false name, of course, with money from all three of us so we all own it. I have plenty of properties, that there is no question about, but I don't think it wise to put you in one of them. This way, if I can get my hands on something, we can fortify it. If we proceed this way, you can get out, how will be determined later, and won't have to go to one side or the other. If I play this right, I can get my hands on something unplottable. There is one I can think of off the top of my head I can get for a song. It will take work, however, a great deal of it to get it up to livable standards. That should provide all the protection you will need. You won't have to decide right now, of course, but it's a plan.”Looking at Harry, who was nodding, then to Remus and Arthur, Sirius said, “Go for it. When you get the price, let me know. I'll get the money for our part and pass it along. You need to realize, though, if we vanish, people are going to look for us. Albus alone is going to turn over every rock there is to find us,” he warned.“This I know. If nothing else, the man is persistent,” Lucius told him sourly. “We can work on that as time goes on. Let's just get something in place where you can at least hide. That will be the most pressing concern.”“Good idea, Lucius,” Arthur told him softly. Like Remus, there was no trust there with the man. With what he knew of the connection that was there, having been shown what it was in several books, he was going to take it for granted that the man wouldn't lie to them on the topic. After all, Sirius said he would know if he did. “I am curious, because of what is happening with Ginny and her crush; what are you going to do about Narcissa? It's going to be a problem from what I understand.”“Narcissa has already agreed to make it very clear that she's going to back off. Right now, divorce is not possible for various reasons. When it comes to a point we can manage it, we will. That should end that. If it comes to the point that she has to say away to avoid problems, she will. That she's made very clear to me and will to both Sirius and Harry when the time comes,” Lucius explained, looking at the man then over to the two involved.Liking that, Sirius nodded. Remembering what he had brought along, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a book. Tossing it onto the table in front of Malfoy, he said, “Where it's marked is the spell Harry and I use for a form of telepathy. I'm warning you now, it's not the best and is iffy as to when it works. Anywhere with a lot of magic it's not going to work. We thought you might be able to either modify it to where it would work better or come up with something else. Honestly? It helped us at first when we had to be apart so we didn't feel as twitchy. It might do the same for you. If you can find another spell or get it to where it functions better, it might help on your end.”Grateful that there was something that might help him, Lucius quickly glanced over the spell. “Let me see what I can find tonight. I'll look this over better and will work with your end on it tomorrow when I come over. I've not heard of anything like this so it may take me some digging to see what I can find.”“I stumbled on it by accident,” Remus admitted. “It was in the library at Grimmauld Place. None of us have been able to come up with anything like it since then. Sorry, that's all the help I can give.”“If there is one, there are others. It may just take time to find,” Lucius said, shutting the book then pocketing it.Looking around as silence descended, Arthur cleared his throat then asked, “Whatever happens, you're going to ensure they can stay in contact with us, right? We don't want to be left in the dark.”Seeing Lupin nod at that, Lucius said, “I think that's mandatory, actually. We'll figure out some way, even if it is by unconventional means. We're going to need to know if Albus is up to something. I assure you, though I know that means nothing right now, that my end of this mess won't harm you or yours. The target, as I told both Sirius and Harry, is Albus.”“What is your side going to do about Severus?” Remus asked. “I'm not sure why he is a spy, honestly. He's—well, you know him. There has to be a reason he's doing this. And it's not because of blind trust in anyone.”“We don't know,” Lucius said, honestly. “Right now, what is going on with him works out well. We get information we want from that direction. There will come a time that we will have to handle that situation. I do agree though, the why here is going to be something we may need to know.” Like with Black and Potter, he was going to give up information to Remus and Arthur for various reasons. He was dead certain, from what he was picking up from the other two, that neither of the men was going to betray them. Black would know in seconds if they were, from what he knew so far. It could be something that would only aid all of them in the future. The Dark Lord agreed when he discussed this part with him so he was going to follow his instinct here.“This is a right ruddy mess,” Remus reiterated, shaking his head.“You get no arguments from me on that assessment,” Lucius snorted, rubbing his eyes.
After Arthur and Remus left, Lucius was alone with Harry and Black. That seemed to ease some of the jitters he was getting when it came to this manifesting. Sliding closer, ensuring that all three were touching in some way, he asked, tone resigned, “Do you have any idea how long we can keep going like this until whatever this is presses us to consummate what is there?”
“Harry and I managed until Christmas break last year when it became apparent over the summer. With you? I don't know. You're following what is there closely enough that it might shorten the time you can manage. There is also the fact that the connection between Harry and I is consummated. That might have an effect as well. This is just something I don't know. And nowhere in this did I say it would be comfortable. It sure wasn't for us.” Sirius explained the best he could. With a heavy sigh, Lucius looked down and shook his head. He didn't know what to do here. By now, Black and Potter were dominating all his waking thoughts and he had issues focusing on anything else. It was starting to affect many things in his life. He assumed, from what he read, that it was the connection pulling him to join. Right now, that wasn't going to happen for a variety of reasons, though he wanted it to. Rubbing his eyes with a slightly shaking hand, he said, “How about this—as the time is apparently limited, especially if Dumbledore is plotting something, we work to see how fast we can progress this. I’ll take the spell you found and see what I can come up with. That way we can work on the serious issues here more as we'll have more time to do so.” Snorting, he said, “I'm distracted enough that I'm fairly worthless at anything else right now anyway. This way I would have plenty to focus on and see what we can manage.”Looking at Sirius, who was nodding, Harry said, “Works for us. If you can find something better, you're going to need to. Those wards around the house make it hard to get through. Anything on your end is going to be worse if it's anything like other magical houses. In fact, it makes it almost impossible to connect to each other.”“I'll find something,” Lucius said, determined to do just that. “I don't care what it is. If nothing else, I'll find another means of communication to use. Let me see what I can do here.” Straightening up, he said, “The Dark Lord would like to come talk to both of you.” Seeing wide-eyed, wary looks there, he said, shaking his head, “I assure you there is nothing nefarious here. He will answer whatever questions you have as honestly as he can. In the next couple days, we plan to have Pettigrew in the hands of the Ministry. After that, he's going to see if I can't arrange something with you both. He's not what you remember, trust me. His appearance is even normal. That is not a glamour or a transformation, it's real.” Stopping, he waited to see what the two had to say.Not liking that, Sirius shook his head then said, “How about this—get Peter to the Ministry then we'll talk again and go from there. No promises, but we'll talk.”Seeing that as an acceptable compromise, Lucius nodded. Quietly, he shifted the focus of the discussion to the more mundane while trying to get a feel for the personalities of the two so he could more easily work with things in the future.
