Chapter 3
Watching Harry come into the kitchen as he sorted through the mass of mail that arrived that morning, Remus smiled a little. It was still hard to fathom that, after a year alone, the two were back. He adored it, of course, but it still seemed like a dream after wanting it for so long.
When Harry sat on the bench by him and draped a leg over his own, Remus reached down then patted it before sending an elf for the young man's breakfast. “Where's Sirius?” He asked quietly.“Still in the shower,” Harry told him after taking a large drink of his milk. “We thought it best not to do that together as we get 'distracted' when we do.”Chuckling at that, Remus nodded, “Very true,” then went back to sorting through the mass of mail. The biggest pile so far was from those none of them knew, something he was going to have the elves burn when he finished going through all of it. They had enough real issues to deal with that they didn't need to worry about anything from the direction of those they didn't even know.Picking up the Prophet as he started to dig into his eggs, Harry snickered at the headline then shook his head. Seeing the huge proclamation of 'Harry Potter and Sirius Black Return' with a picture of Remus leading them out of the Ministry then, under it in a smaller font was the blurb 'What Does This Mean For the Fight Against He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named?'. Rolling his eyes, Harry skimmed through the article, brow furrowing at the leak of that damned prophecy, what it meant according to 'sources' and the speculation about how this might align with their return. “Yeah, just what we need; the public knowing about that prophecy.” Tossing the paper aside, he went back to eating.Knowing what Harry was talking about as he had already read the article thoroughly for any information in it, Remus sighed, “No, that's not a good thing, I agree. It's just adding fuel to a fire that we don't want. We can't do anything about it, though, and will stay out of this mess for a while, so it shouldn't affect us. Don't worry about it.”“If they think they are drawing me back into this chaos, they're delusional,” Harry snorted, grinning a little as he ate.Smiling at that, Remus nodded, “I know. We won't worry about that now anyway. There are plenty of other things we should concern ourselves with before we even ponder that part of this mess.”Scanning the mass of mail that Remus was plowing through, Harry asked, eying it, “How much of this crap are we going to have to deal with and how bad is it?”“Quite a lot,” Remus told him honestly. Gesturing to the burn pile, he said, “That we're not going to worry about. The rest we do though. I haven't delved into much of it yet, but there is plenty here we have to concern ourselves with.” Tone distracted as he tossed some more into various piles, he said, “The only one I've read so far is from Rufus, the new Minister of Magic. We're good on that front. I think he's fishing for information on how you two managed this, but he made it clear that no one, anywhere, can detect that you did anything Dark to come back, so he's going to leave you alone. He sent along another copy of the pardon papers for Sirius, as well as the notice that reparations for his mistaken imprisonment is in his vaults, along with his letter of apology from the Ministry.”“That's good,” Harry said. He looked up as Sirius came in then went back to eating before asking, “Who all else are we going to have to deal with here? Do you know?”“That I don't,” Remus said honestly, nodding to Sirius as he got himself a cup of coffee then sat down. “There are a lot of letters here, from Albus to Arthur and plenty of others that we do need to look at. I'll sort through and read them, then determine how best to go about this. We'll go from there on how to work with managing the situation.”Looking over at what Remus had in front of him, Sirius snorted as he took his plate. Shaking his head as he felt Harry's leg drape over one of his, he said, “Yeah, gonna let you handle that there, Remus. You know better than we do what's going on and who might be pulling what.”
“It's best I do,” Remus agreed with a nod, fishing around in the piles then pulling out the letter from Rufus and handing it over to Sirius. “Let me get through this mess, then we'll go on from there. That's going to take time.”Reading the letter and nodding, pleased with it, Sirius then tossed it aside and picked up the Prophet. Shaking his head at what was there as he sipped his coffee, he then said, “Yeah, that's not good. Nothing we can't handle, but not something we needed either.”“We're fine,” Remus soothed as he continued what he was doing. “We have all the time in the world before we have to venture out to do anything and face anyone. The elves take care of the shopping. Whatever else we might need, I'll go out for. I can either go under Polyjuice or use a simple glamour. It's nothing to worry about.”“Good,” Sirius said, digging into his food. “I don't plan on going anywhere for at least a month. It's probably going to take that long to let things settle. Maybe even longer than that. We'll see there. And, as for this mess? Fuck 'em. They can deal with it on their own. We'll go with an intermediary to talk to and work from there. We are not getting drawn into this war right now. I don't care what happens.”“I plan to make that very clear, Sirius,” Remus told him with a firm nod. “We do need to keep an eye on what's going on, though. Albus, and that faction, I'm not worried about. It's the other side that I am. With both of you back, You-Know-Who might target Harry again because of that prophecy. For now, we're safe and will deal with things as they come.” Stopping what he was doing, he looked at Sirius then said, quietly, “If you plan to implement what you set in place before you both died, it's going to have that side focus on us, that's for sure.”“I know,” Sirius conceded with a nod. “Right now, I'm not doing anything. Once we get settled, I'll look at it again and see what I think. Not sure there. There are other things that we need to work on more than that. Albus isn't a problem, we know that. Not sure what exactly he had planned with this, but he'll leave us alone if we make it clear that's what we want. I'm counting on that. They'll want information, of course, something we'll give some of, but he won't push. It's the other side I'm worried about. Even if I don't take that step, chances are they won't leave us alone.”Finishing his food, Harry leaned against Remus and asked, “What's gone on since we've been gone? With the war I mean. Can we at least get the highlights?”Finishing the sorting, Remus sent the burn pile off with the elves then took a sip of his coffee before launching in, “To be honest, it's bad. I've stayed out of as much as I can, obviously, but the blow of losing you, Harry, was a major one, for all factions but the other side. It's as if your death was the loss of hope.” Hearing Sirius snort and seeing Harry roll his eyes, Remus smiled and said, “I agree there.” Quickly, he walked them through the basics of Imperious'd people in the Ministry, Fudge getting chucked out, attacks on Muggles, the push of legislation and all the other nightmares. At the end, he said, “The Dursleys have new wards up, for what that's worth, as they refused to leave. So far, they haven't been targeted. That may change with you back though. Anything anyone is trying isn't working. Rufus is doing the best he can, but it's not much help in stopping the mess. The other side has too many players in place, not to mention the tactics they use to get what they want. Albus is working with the situation and the Order is doing its best, but it's not helping either. I think both Rufus and Albus are going to try to pull the both of you in, even if it's just as a figurehead of some kind to get people to focus on. Honestly? There isn't much anyone can do from what I see. Until everyone wants to stand up and do something, it's not going to work.”“Yeah, well, unless someone comes at us directly, we're not involved in this,” Sirius snorted, sending his plate to the sink and refilling his cup.“That may come, Sirius,” Remus told him softly, looking in his direction. “Harry is going to draw that side anyway, we know that. Especially with that prophecy leaked as I don't think he knew all of what it said, at least until today because of the paper. Then it'll get worse if you do what you planned.”Nodding slowly, Sirius thought that over and sighed, “Give it some time here before we decide anything on the second. The first? Let them try. Between you and I, Harry's fine. They won't know what hit them if they try.” With that he gave a rather feral grin and sipped at his coffee.Chuckling at that, smiling himself, Remus nodded, “Very true. We'll wait and see though. I don't think we need to concern ourselves with anything until we start going back out in public. We'll keep an eye on the situation, of course, but not worry too much.”“Good idea. It's going to take time to resettle here and let the bond have its way,” Sirius sighed, shaking his head. “The pull is already there to work on it. We need to get some of this shite settled before we do that.”“We do,” Remus told him firmly, though understanding what Sirius was talking about. “We can get through most of what's here this morning then we can work on that.” Seeing that sheen still in Sirius and Harry's eyes, Remus knew that part was coming. Quietly, he added, “This part does need tended to first, Sirius. I need to know just what we're facing here to prepare.” Smiling a little, he added, lowering his voice, “Though I'm as anxious to press on with the fun part as you are.”“I know,” Sirius told him, looking in his direction. “I'll keep it under control here, don't worry.” Shaking his head, he sighed. “Alright, now what plan do you have to deal with this mess in explaining what happened? You said last night you had something here, at least I think you did.”“I do,” Remus told him with a firm nod. “What I thought was this; give up the spell James did initially. That's easy enough. What I won't give up, and will say that, is the reaction we saw when he did it. As that spell is one that can cause all kinds of different reactions, depending on what was done, it's very doubtful anyone, anywhere, even Albus, can figure out what went wrong with it. Then I'm going to bluntly lay out what we started noticing when and the reaction to it.” Softening his tone, putting a hand on Harry's back, he said, “Including what you were dealing with, Harry. I know that's not something you probably want many to hear, but it'll drive the point home of how bad it was.”“I don't care anymore,” Harry said honestly with a shrug. “It's done and over, so it doesn't matter.”“Good,” Remus said with a smile, rubbing his back softly. “I need that in there to explain part of this and the nightmare it was dealing with what came from it. We also have proof that there was really something wrong from Minerva because of that weekend we spent in the Shrieking Shack that year. She allowed that and I'm not sure even Albus knows it happened, though he may. At the time, they attributed it to the tournament, but we know better.”Taking all that in, Sirius gave a slow nod. “So far, so good. This isn't bad. Just make sure to include our reaction. I mean, shite, we were horrified about what was happening and coming from it.”“Believe me, I plan to make that very clear,” Remus said with a dry snort, shaking his head. “I'll then go through us finding out what happened, though not giving details, and what we did to try to fix it, again not telling them what that was. After that, how we only found one thing that could manage and took steps to do that. That's where I'm going to have to give up some of what we did. However, what I will tell them is something they're going to see anyway, like the marks and the collar. I'm also going to make damned clear that there is no undoing this.” Lowering his voice, he said, “And explain that Harry always has a choice, that he's no slave, but a submissive. I don't want it out there and speculated on that this relationship is one he has no choice in.”Taking that in and thinking it over, Sirius gave a slow nod, “Alright, this works. You're good enough to know what not to give up here. The other part—we'll work with it as they see some of it.”“I think, honestly, at some point very soon, Harry needs to talk to Arthur alone to confirm that part. What Arthur's apt to see is something that's going to stun the poor man.” Seeing Sirius look at him, that sheen more pronounced, he held up his hand and said, “Not right away, but soon. And it won't be for long. I swear, Sirius. Just long enough for Harry to talk to him a little. If Harry gets distressed, we'll both know.”Thinking that over, Sirius smoothed down his goatee then gave a slow nod, “Yeah, that might be a good idea. It's just going to take time to where I can handle that. The same with Harry. It's going to set off hell for both of us if we do it right away.”“We'll make sure both of you are in a more stable place before we even talk about it again,” Remus reassured him. “Right now—no, I'm not even considering that. Dealing with Arthur, even with all of us sitting there, will be hard enough.”“Yeah, you need to give that a couple of days, that's for damned sure,” Sirius said with a chuckle, shaking his head.“I will,” Remus soothed. “One of the many letters here is from Arthur. I'll reply to that today, letting him not only know that we're sending him Kreacher, but that we'll talk to only him for the time being. And that we need to give it a couple of days before we can safely do that. That should hold everyone off.”“Good,” Sirius nodded. “The wards won't allow anyone else in, right? You set it to reject those that used to have permission?”“I did,” Remus assured him. “I also managed to change the Fidelius to where I'm the secret keeper. The only ones allowed in are the three of us right now. We'll work with anyone else later on.”Pleased with that, Sirius sighed, “Alright, good. Now we press on.” Eying the stack of letters, he asked, “Do you want help with those or is it something you feel you should handle?”Sighing, looking at the mass he had to go through, Remus shook his head then said, distractedly, “I think it's best if you both help. You can at least sort through what needs handled from what is just—junk. I'll take on whatever does need an answer in some way, but I need help sorting here. And I think it's best to keep both of you busy for now. The bond is pulling, I can feel it myself, but we need this completed before we answer the siren song of it.”“Yeah, busy is good,” Sirius chuckled, grinning slightly manically at that. “Alright, Moony, divide them up and we'll start on it. Let's see what we can manage here.”Dividing the mass into three, Remus passed the two stacks over then began opening and reading, sighing as he did. This wasn't going to be fun.
A couple of hours later, the mail was at least divided into what needed answered and what was just letters that they didn't have to bother with. Taking a break, sipping at his drink, Remus asked, softly, “What was it like on the other side? If you can remember that is.”
Turning to straddle the bench, facing Remus, Sirius held Harry to him and looked down at the younger man. Seeing Harry gaze up at him, Sirius sighed then said, “We remember. It was damned strange, that's for fucking sure. We were in Diagon Alley, believe it or not, but it was deserted. At times you could hear other people talking, though they sounded far away. No matter how hard we looked, we never found them. The shops were just how they normally are, but no one was in them. We could even wander and try things or take what we wanted. Hell, we spent nights in most places when it came to sleeping, like in apartments above them, until we found a whorehouse in Knockturn Alley we both liked.” Grinning at that, he explained, “That's because it was more comfortable than anywhere else we found and had everything we needed in it.”Snorting at that, smiling a little, Remus said, “That sounds interesting.”“We wondered if the real shops on this side of the Veil had the same things we saw in areas customers don't go,” Harry added, shifting around to get comfortable, straddling the bench like Sirius had and leaning back against the man. “It's something we wonder if we can't find out now that we're back.”“That would be interesting,” Remus admitted with a nod.Shaking his head, Sirius told him, voice quiet, “The only strange thing was the Leaky Cauldron. That was, as expected, just like the rest of the Alley. Except the front door. You know how that leads to Muggle London?” Seeing Remus nod, Sirius sighed and pressed on, “This one didn't. Instead, it was surrounded by this really bright white light. It was closed all the time, but you could see the light surrounding it and is something that's hard to describe other than it had a strange glow to it. And it had a pull to it that nothing else in the Alley did. You could hear voices calling to you, beckoning you to open the door and step through. In fact, it was a fight to not follow that pull if you were even close to it. Harry and I, both, were drawn to it more than once and had to be pulled back by the other.”“We're sure that's the door to pass completely to the next life, or what manifested as such in that place,” Harry added softly, shaking his head. “It was hard to fight off going through. We finally quit going into the Leaky Cauldron so we didn't have to deal with it. Though, at times, you could feel it calling to you in some way. We usually went as far down Knockturn Alley as we could get when that happened to avoid it.”“Sometimes the fight not to pass through was almost overwhelming so we decided that it was time to stay away from the Leaky. There were plenty of other things to do, of course.” Grinning, he said, “We spent quite a few days riding the carts in Gringotts just for fun. They went all over the place! We had to figure out how to make them work, of course, but once we did it was great.”“Time was—strange there,” Harry said with a shake of his head. “There was no day or night, it was like twilight all the time. And there were no working clocks, so we didn't have any way to tell which was which. Even the watches we had on didn't work. They just spun quickly around. So, we just had to kind of judge time by sleeping schedules and how tired we were. The temperature was always at a constant comfortable one and there was never any change to the weather. It was like we were stuck in the same day the whole time we were there.”Taking that in, Remus nodded then said, quietly, “It doesn't sound too bad.”“It was and it wasn't,” Sirius told him with a shrug. “It was comfortable at least. That was a plus. The downside was no eating and missing other things, like interaction with other people. I'm sure if either of us had to go it alone, we would have ended up passing through that door. I think, honestly, as time went on, the fact that we could still feel that pull from your end of the bond is the only reason we didn't just give up and move on. That's what kept us grounded, for lack of a better term.”Thankful for that, Remus asked, “How did you know when the Veil on your side would appear again if you couldn't judge the passage of time?”“Your end of the bond,” Sirius told him. “As time went on, the pull became stronger, so we knew that the Veil reappearing was approaching. We could judge from that what we needed to do to ensure that we could pass back through. When the throb from it was constant, we stuck close to the area we showed up in that place, knowing that's where it would show back up.”Taking that in, Remus nodded, understanding because of what he felt from his end of the bond as well. “Was it like actually being alive there? Or different?”“That's another yes and no thing,” Sirius sighed, shrugging. “We could touch, use and whatever with most things, but it wasn't the same as doing it on this side of the Veil. The best way to describe it is that it felt muted, like you were wearing some kind of thin gloves when you touched something. Other than each other. When it came to us, it was like our bodies were real.”“Was the pull how you knew when it would come back and could pass through?” Remus asked, softly, looking between the two.“It was,” Sirius told him with a firm nod. “We knew as the flares in the bond grew more intense, the energy was building enough that we could manage to come back through. As we knew it would be at the peak at the exact same moment we passed through a year later, though could manage after that if we had to, we camped out on the street waiting for it to show again because we weren't sure how much it was building from the intensity. Just when we thought it had peaked, it seemed to grow again. That was the only issue on our end and, quite frankly, was enough to make you go mental. We'd be all prepared, it wouldn't show then it would keep building.”Thinking that over, Remus gave a slow nod. “I could see how that would be a problem. I had clocks that worked to judge the time.”“Yeah, toward the end there it was maddening,” Harry sighed, shaking his head. “We did what we could to hold off the worst of the reactions, but it was bad. And we had no way to judge how much it would still build or how close the time was to pass back.”“How did you manage to get back through? I know that wasn't something we could plan for.” Remus inquired, curious about that.“That was the biggest guess we had,” Sirius admitted, looking at him. “Because we didn't know how 'death' would come, if it would, we had no way to judge going in how to make the return trip. In the end, we built as much energy up as we could through everything we could think of then just did what you do to get on to the platform at Kings Cross, making sure we were holding on to each other as we did it. It worked, thankfully, though it wasn't the most comfortable thing in the world as we did it.”“Yeah, it wasn't,” Harry added sourly, shaking his head. “It didn't hurt like you did yourself an injury, but it wasn't real fun. The only thing that did really hurt was the first time you took a breath. That really hurt. It was like inhaling broken glass the first few minutes.”“I guess, honestly, that has to do with the fact that we weren't really alive on the other side and suddenly were again,” Sirius shrugged. “I don't know there. Either way, it worked, that's all that matters.”“It is,” Remus said with a smile and a nod. “I was just curious what it was like was all as I've only read a few accounts of people coming back. What you described is nothing like anything I read.”“What can I say? We're special,” Sirius grinned then laughed.“You are,” Remus chuckled, shaking his head. Sighing, he said, “I'm sure I'm not the only one that's going to ask you to recount this.” Looking at the two stacks of letters, he blew out a breath and said, “I think I better get on these. You both should stay while I compose the replies so we can work out some of the areas.” Grinning a little, he added, “The faster I get this done, the quicker we can move on to the more fun stuff.”“Get to it then,” Sirius grinned, shaking his head. Quietly, sobering up, he said, “You probably should hurry. I'm working with this here, but I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to do that.”Understanding, Remus nodded then grabbed the first letter off the stack and began to read through it again to see what he needed to do.
