Hi guys, sorry for the delay. I'm afraid that university snuck up and hit me over the head with a big heavy textbook while screaming at me to study harder or fail... But no more delays here is the next chapter!
(it feels so great to recieve a review asking for the next chapter just as I am about to upload!)
Chapter 3
Albus Dumbledore sucked on his lemon drop angrily. How dare his spy betray him like this, leaving him without a teacher and daring to interfere with his weapon. He glared at the summons on his desk telling him that he had to appear before the wizengamot to defend against the accusation of child abuse. Since he had told the ministry that Harry was safe with his muggle relatives but had retained the magical guardianship over the boy to ensure he would be able to control the child when he came to Hogwarts at eleven. But those stupid muggle had messed up, damaging the child so much no one could deny that Harry had been abused and even making it so that he would would not be able to fight Voldmort like he was supposed to. But that the ministry dared to summon him on charges was absurd. He was the ALBUS DUMBLEDORE that kept the world safe and defeated the dark lord Grindewald. They should be praying at his feet not charge him for the sake of one little boy.
Severus spend the night by the bedside of young Harry potter even though he knew that with the potions in his system he would not wake up that night but he still could not leave the small form even though he knew Lucius was waiting for him in their bedchamber. Now that he would not return to his job at Hogwarts he would be able to stay with his lover, Narcissa had her own wing in Malfoy manor but she had not shared Lucius' bed since their wedding night when she conceived Draco. Their parents had know of their children's inclinations to prefer their own gender and a match had been made on that knowledge. Lucius had his lovers and Narcissa hers without bothering each other or having to deal with jealousy of one spouse. Although Narcissa had lost her lover and sister Bellatrix after the fall of the Dark Lord and had not taken a lover, still believing she would be released from Azkaban one day and content to wait for her.
Lucius observed his lover from the doorway silently, he knew Severus blamed himself for never checking up on the boy. He had no idea how the muggles could have let this happen. Surly they must have noticed young Harry was not being treated right? Harry did not yet know his uncle was dead, hopefully if would give some relief to the tortured boy that he could not longer be hurt by the man.
A house elf notified him that the files he had requested arrived, shakelbolt was no fan of his but before he left he had requested the files the muggles had on the Dursely family so he could prepare for court. Though Lucius had not worked as a barrister for years he still had the right to and if he felt the ministry was messing up the court cases he would step in to take over.
There was nothing in the file on the first few years. At five the story of woe started, an ambulance was called when Harry dragged a pan of boiling oil off the stove and it damaged his face and eyes so severely the medical report stated no expected regeneration. The Dursleys claimed it was an accident and though the social worker noticed they did not visit Harry very often in the hospital the young boy was released back to his family. Petunia Dursely first send Harry to the same local primary school in their neighborhood but due to his injuries he could not assimilate to the regular school system and had to drop out. A vague mention of his teacher spoke about the hostile relationship between the nephews but the social worker ignored this and Petunia was given permission to homeschool young Harry and received additional funds for keeping home a handicapped boy. It was also at this time the first medical report came in on Harry's clumsy and uncoordinated behavior. Large amount of buises and injuries were noted but they were put down to his blindness and reluctance to use a cane to get around. Petunia held up a tale of woe to the social worker for years about how Harry was prone to bouts of anger and dangerous tantrums, even injuring himself and scaring her son Dudley.
Lucius read the file stunned, no one had connected Harry's behavior and injuries to the possibility of abuse in the Dursley household. The neck injury happened when Harry was 8, according to Petunia he had been out playing in the garden with her son while he went in for a moment to get something and when she came back he had wrapped the hose around his neck and was struggling against the suffocating effect, she had cut away the hose and called the ambulance directly after but the file stated they had not complete believed her story, stating that the damage was more likely someone had repeatedly struck Harry's throat with a closed fist. But only the overweight nephew was present and surely... The social worker had let it go on once again, sending Harry back with severely damaged vocal cords that prohibited him form making noises.
So far Lucius understood that there had been no obvious signs of abuse, but their scans had indicated long term starvation, beatings and broken bones over a long time.
With a sigh he put down the file and rubbed his eyes. It did not make sense for the muggle social workers to have overlooked such obvious signs unless something else was happening. Looking in on Severus one last time to find his black haired lover asleep he quickly walked beoynd the apperation wards and with a moderate crack apperated to surry, little whining, privet drive. He landed in a small alleyway and changed his robes into a muggle business suit with a wave of his wand before tucking the small piece of wood away in the hidden wand holster.
Lucius sneered at the state of the neighborhood, cookie cutter houses and immaculate boring gardens. When he neared number 4 he shivered from the Ward that surrounded the house, he was certain the ward had been forbidden by the ministry of magic for being a blood ward but unlike he expected it was not a ward of protection of the occupant of the house but rather a ward that prevented outside interference. At least that would-be explain why no one ever stepped in to protect young Harry from further harm. Stepping one more step towards the front door he encounterd the next ward, a ward of subservience and obedience. Taking a little more time to examine the signature Lucius vowed to keep searching for the caster of these wards.
Looking through the window the wizard saw a tall horse faced woman sitting in the kitchen crying. In the living room he could see the television playing and a mop of blond hair sticking out above it. Sighing, Lucius rang the doorbell. Loathe to bother the grieving family but needing answers only they could provide.
"Yes," the horse face woman asked suspiciously when she opened the door, red faced.
"My apologies for disturbing you at this time but there are some matters that need to be discussed." Lucius said formally.
"What about?" She asked warily.
"Your nephew, he was found injured wandering around kings cross station." Lucius said, counting on her humanity to at least be willing to discuss the matter. But as soon as he mentioned her nephew her demeanor changed, shifting out disgust and rage.
"I will hear nothing about him. That disgusting creature killed my husband. He is not welcome here, the little freak has always destroyed anything good near to him. It would be better if he had died and my husband was alive." She sneered at him though clenched teeth. Lucius was taken back by the sudden fiery words.
"Madame, my apologies but if that is your opinions why take care of the child for the past 10 years?" Lucius asked surprised.
"Because we could not get rid of him. No matter what we did he would always be brought back and we would suffer misfortune." Petunia snarled. "When we brought him to an orphanage he was brought back, when we left him in the city he was brought back. Please just keep him this time and relieve us of his cruse." By now the tall blond, horselike woman was almost crying and Lucius felt unsure how to deal with the situation. In some way it seemed like this family had been as much a victim as Harry had been though he still did not understand how they could do this to a child.
"I would like to retrieve any personal items Harry left behind here since he did not have any luggage when he came to us. After that I promise you that Harry will not return to your domicile." Lucius said formally. Aware that he would warn miss bones about this conversation and warn her that it might be necessary to search for the caster of the wards rather the punish the Dudley's.
"He has nothing here. Be gone." Petunia said coldly, looking a bit closer at the handsome blond standing at her door, having to forcefully remind himself that this was one of those freaks dispute how handsome and reasonable he seemed.
"Let me just check his room to make sure he did not forget anything to prevent me having to come back." Lucius pressured once again, wondering at the women's reluctance to let him come in and check.
"I checked, leave." Petunia said again.
"My apologies ma'm, I need to check." Lucius said, rudely pushing past him and grabbing his concealed wand to get a idea of where Harry's room was. Strangly it did not send him up the stairs but rather towards the living room.
But when he passed the stairs he felt it turn. Shocked he stared a the small door under the stairs leading to a cupboard with a large padlock on it. With a wordless alomahora the lock sprang open and with a shaking hand Lucius pulled open the door. The cupboard was cluttered with cleaning supplies, a vacuum, mop and broom but in a corner he spotted a small thin pad from what looked like a toddler camping bed and a thin ratty blanket.
Stunned he looked at the small corner, sadly surveying the picture before him realizing the implications he was looking at. Doing a last scan to make sure that she had spoken the truth and there was nothing left behind he avoided the screeching woman and left the house without another word.
Severus woke up with a sore neck from sleeping upright in a chair. For a moment he was confused where he was. The opulent room could only be in one of the pure-blood families but why was he sleeping in a chair if he was in a manor.
The bed before him looked slept in and the moment he saw the potions on the bedside table he rememberd the waif like boy he had brought to Lucius. Panicky he rushed from the room, ignoring the painful stings from his sleeping legs in his fear that the boy had been hurt again. Lucius looked startled when Serverus almost ran into him, looking around panicked.
"Harry. Have you seen him?" The potions master asked hurried.
"I have not, have you asked the house elves? They generally keep track of where everyone is?" Lucius asked calmly. Sure that Harry could not have gotten far when he had ordered the house elves to keep an eye out for him.
"Dippy," the patriarch said clearly, refusing to call for his elves. A elf poped in, dressed in a neatly pressed uniform with a Malfoy crest.
"Have you or you kind seen lord Potter?" The blond asked calmly.
"He is wandering the hallway, sir. We tooks him to the kitchen for eats." The elf squeecked, making Severus feel dizzy trying to decipher the strange grammar the creature used.
"This way Severus, let's go see how our little guest is this morning," Lucius said calmly, leading the potions master along to the kitchen, delaying the discussion about the Dursleys and what he found there.
The kitchen was bustling with elves. More than Severus ever had seen together. And in between all the elves there was a single small boy holding a bread roll and turning his head like it was on a stick trying to keep track of the elves moving around him.
"Harry," Severus breathed relieved, seeing the slight form before him. Immediately Harry jumped of the chair and turned to him. Terror evident on his face. He quickly put the bread roll on the table retreating a little.
"Harry, I won't hurt you." Severus breathed softly. Trying not to scare the boy any more than he already was. The elves were now avoiding the boy, moving around them. But Harry stood still, shivering and frightened but without responding.
"Harry, why don't we take you to the breakfast room where it is warmer and so the elves can finish their preparations in peace." Lucius said calmly, turning and walking to the door loudly, much louder than he would usually move. Severus frowned for a moment until he saw Harry unfold his cane and swinging it before him calmly he followed the footsteps quite adeptly. Copying his friend he moved more loudly than he would usually to follow them out. Both men carefully led the boy through the extensive halls, stamping their feet and making sure they did not come too close to the traumatized boy.
Narcissa looked up surprised when she heard two pairs of heavy footsteps approaching the breakfast room and she wondered who ever it would be that was making such a racket. Worried she pulled her gown a little more closed to cover more of her cleavage, they would usually dress informally for breakfast and she was not expecting any guests. Worried she rose when the door opened only to find her husband, his lover and their young guest there.
"Lucius," she breathed a little startled. Shocked that her husband would make such a racket.
"Good morning." Lucius said, smiling at her and walking loudly to his chair, Harry following silently behind. "You can sit to my left Harry." Lucius said calmly, waiting for Harry to move around and use his cane to find the chair and stand behind it unsure. Moving slowly Lucius pulled the chair out and Harry perched on the edge. Severus sat on the other side of Harry rather than take his place at Lucius right.
"What do you like for breakfast Harry. Some scrambled eggs?" Lucius asked softly, watching their silent guest closely. But Harry turned his head a little but gave no sign that he wanted some.
"How about I just put some on your plate and you can try to see if you like it." Lucius decided, putting some eggs, mushrooms, buttered toast and ham on Harry's plate before filling his own. Severus started a casual conversation but all three adults closely watched Harry when they started to begin eating. But the boy sat quietly without moving to eat himself.
"Try to eat something sweetheart." Narcissa encouraged him gently seeing him just follow their movements but not move towards his plate. Severus watched the little boy for a moment, remembering how he had acted when they gave him the soup last night that had been laced with dreamless sleep. He was not sure how much the youngster remembered from last night but most likely it would have made him even more food weary. Combining that with the likeliness that his family had used food as punishment made it difficult for Harry to trust them with food.
"Just a few bites love." He encouraged softly, hoping that if they all verbally encouraged him he would at least take a bite. Though even just surrounded by house elves and a fresh bread-role in his hand he had not dared to eat though he had no idea how Harry viewed the house elves that surrounded him. Using his wand Severus made the fork nudge against Harries slack hand, at first making Harry start but reluctantly take the fork in his hand.
After a few more minutes Harry reluctantly moved his fork, stabbing at random parts of the plate softly. Watched closely by the three adults who still kept up their casual chatter.
Harry's face was scrunched up in concentration, trying to figure out what was on his plate. The feeling he got was different from anything he had ever sensed, though he generally used his fingers and not a fork and just got some crusts rather than real people food.
"Those are scramble eggs Harry." Lucius said, seeing Harry poke at the food. When Harry moved the fork to some other place Lucius would continue to tell Harry what was on his plate. Finally Harry stabbed a tomato that would not slide off his fork and he hesitantly moved it to his mouth, his body posture speaking of how uncomfortable he was feeling, wearily shifting. It took him several tries to get the slice of tomato into his mouth.
Narcissa had to suppress a sob, seeing how helpless and frightened the boy was. Frustrated the boy let the fork drop on the table and explored the plate again with his fingers, seeking out the different foods and quickly stuffing hands full into his mouth.
Severus shook his head at the others to prevent them form interfering. Right now having Harry eat was more important than the table manners he was using. Once the boy felt comfortable eating near them they would attempt to teach the boy manners. Harry cleared his plate completely, whipping the juices from his plate and sucking his fingers clean.
"All full Harry?" Severus asked, watching his smaller companion. Harry nodded a little, already sitting up a little straighter.
"Shall we move to the sitting room?" Narcissa sakes, suddenly lost on what to do next.
When the men nodded and got up Harry automatically followed. Moving slightly less loud Harry was still able to follow them easily and it seemed like he was growing used to moving with them. At the sitting room Harry stood in the doorway lost for a moment.
"Come here for a moment, take the couch that is to my left." Severus said. Waiting for Harry to follow the instruction, locate the couch and perch on the seat nervously.
"I would like to talk to you a little. Just to get to know you a bit more." Severus told him. Harry cocked his head to the side. Waiting patiently.
"You seem confident walking with a cane, have you used it long?" Harry shrugged a little. "Have you learned sign language to be able to communicate?" Severus continued receiving a minute shake of his head.
"Have you learned to read Braille?" Serves asked wearily, afraid of the answer. What had Petunia been teaching the boy all those years she had homeschooled the boy. Again Harry shook his head.
"We will attempt to remove the scars on your neck that will hopefully allow you to speak once again so we will focus at first on learning Braille and perhaps you could try to walk with a guide dog to see if you like it. It would give you more freedom and a well trained dog can help you a lot with small things." Severus said, waiting for Harry to nod a little.
"But for today we will take it easy." Narcissa decided. "Perhaps go for a walk in the garden and rest up. This has been a very exciting few day for all of us and we all need a break." The woman decided, knowing her men well enough to know in their enthusiasm they could forget to rest, eat or keep in mind the needs of others.
