Chapter 3
After taking a seat at the kitchen table between Bill and Sirius then sipping at the tea that appeared before him, Harry looked around. Brow furrowed, he glanced between Bill and Sirius, seeing equally confused looks there. This was—odd and didn't look to be at all pleasant either
Remus and Lucius were at one end of the table, all but glued to each other. Lucius actually had his head in his hands, not looking up. Remus—Harry didn't know how to describe the look on his face. Stunned and uncomfortable seemed close, but that wasn't entirely accurate either. Tonks was seated right beside Remus, hair a dull mousey brown color, eyes red rimmed, as though she had been crying. Narcissa was at the opposite end of the table, just looking shocked, trembling slightly. From what Harry could see, she was staring at Lucius.
Though Draco and Charlie were seated together, the two weren't even looking at each other. They also seemed to be staying as far apart as they could. Though they didn't look like they were happy about anything, they didn't seem to be angry either. The same couldn't be said for Snape and the twins, though.
Seated on one end of the bench, Snape was sandwiched between the two, and all of them looked furious. The twins both had some open sores, probably from some kind of hex, while Snape had green hair and some kind of orange-ish hairs about a foot long sprouting from his ears. That was enough to tell Harry that the night hadn't gone well with the three.
Shaking his head and looking down at his plate when it appeared in front of him, Harry wasn't sure if he wanted to know what was going on, honestly. It couldn't be good, what with the things he saw. And it would probably grow worse as the day continued.
Glancing around then looking at Bill, who was gazing at him, Sirius sighed, wondering what the hell was going on. Tonks—well, he got that. She probably was told what happened and of the bonding. That would be enough to cause what he saw. After all, she and Remus were headed for marriage from what he knew. In fact, they had been planning a quiet ceremony for the last couple of weeks. Snape and the twins? That wasn't unexpected there. He figured something just short of all out war had happened overnight in their room. Cissy though—something was off and he wasn't sure he wanted to know what it was.
After a bracing sip of tea and a couple of bites of his food, he asked, “Anything going on we need to know about?”
“Some,” Remus said softly, looking seriously off-kilter. “Albus is at the Ministry at the moment trying to get help with what went on. The DMLE might have something on the spell we were hit with. There are a few other things he's checking as well in other areas to see if he can figure out what in Merlin's name happened. He also has several people looking into the readings on the bond. When he knows something or has information for us, he'll come back.”
“He also wants us all to write down anything odd we've seen with the bond,” Charlie added, tone uneven. “Anything at all we've seen. Also, to add how far we can get from each other. We've noticed some odd things and that the distance varies with all of us.”
“We can do that, easily,” Bill nodded. Brow furrowed, he looked around then asked, “How bad is the distance problem? We're having some problems, but it's not horrible.”
“It depends on the 'couple',” Lucius sighed, not lifting his head. “Remus and I aren't bad. We have a tether that's at least workable. Draco and Charlie are about the same though theirs seems shorter. It's Severus, Fred and George that have the issues. They are all but stuck together with only a couple of feet. It's even shorter than it was yesterday.” Lifting his head, he glanced at Sirius, Bill and Harry then asked, “How is yours?”
“Um—we're good actually,” Bill said, bewildered, glancing between Harry and Sirius, both of whom looked just as confused. “We have plenty of play in it. Enough so we can tend to what we need without a problem. Well, provided we don't do something like shut the door to the loo completely.”
Looking at Bill, brow creased, Remus then looked around at everyone else, seeing confused looks there as well. Quietly, he said, “I don't think the rest of us have that kind of length, Bill. Lucius and I—well, as long as we stand right outside the door, leaving it open, we can do what we need alone. Draco and Charlie are the same way. Severus, Fred and George can't. They have to be in the same room at all times.”
Eyes wide, Sirius said, softly, “We all took showers alone last night while the others sat on the bed. The door to the loo was open slightly, but we didn't have a problem getting yanked back or anything. In fact, I think we could go anywhere in the room without an issue if someone was in the loo.”
“Draco and I couldn't do anything like that,” Charlie said, bewildered. “It wasn't horrible, but we had to stay close.”
“As did we,” Lucius said. Shaking his head, he sighed, “Are you noticing anything else off? Or strange?”
“No,” Bill said, shaking his head. “We're good actually. It's just like normal with us.”
“That's the same with Draco and me,” Charlie added, glancing at Draco who nodded. “It's just the tether that's a problem with us.”
“We have other problems,” Remus sighed, shaking his head. Before anyone could ask, he explained, “Narcissa can't get close to Lucius. If she does, she gets shoved away by something, we don't know what. Tonks can get close and touch, but she gets some kind of odd reaction that makes her skin crawl so badly that she can't stand it. Lucius keeps getting yanked behind me if we're walking down the hall or something similar. It's nothing too horrible, but it's strange. And we had to stay in the same bed. If Lucius tried to lay down in the one the elves put in there, he was yanked into mine.”
“We could do separate beds, they just had to be close,” Draco told everyone softly.
“Of course, we couldn't manage that one,” Snape sneered, arms folded over his chest. “No matter how we tried it, we kept getting pulled together. Even when the bed was enlarged, we had to be touching in some way or we ended up yanked together.”
“This was not pretty,” Fred said, shaking his head.
“We couldn't do much of anything,” George sighed.
“We didn't try the separate bed,” Bill admitted. “The elves just enlarged ours and we were good.”
“When we're all done eating, we'll write down what we experienced. Albus wants us to keep a running journal of sorts about odd areas so we can keep track. It might help figure out what is coming, something that might show a pattern to follow or whatnot,” Lucius sighed.
“We're not hopeful that this will help,” Remus added with a shake of his head. “All of us seem to be dealing with something different. We hope it will give us some idea what can help, though. At the very least, it might give a hint of what works to ease it for some of you. I don't know.”
“That we'll do,” Sirius nodded after taking a couple bites of his food. He was about to ask after a few other things when he heard someone come into the house. Looking up, he waited to see who it was. Once the door to the kitchen opened, he gave an internal sigh. It was Fleur. This wouldn't be good, but it needed to come. Once it was over, they would press on. That thought quickly began to change when Fleur all but threw herself on Bill, sobbing loudly.
Eyes widening, Sirius glanced down at his arm where the bond mark was. It was tingling madly and not in a good way either. It was something that was like that unpleasant sensation of a limb waking up after it fell asleep. While it did that, he began to realize that Harry was getting angry. He didn't know how he knew that, but he did. Whatever it was seemed to come from the bond mark. Putting a hand over it under the sleeve of his robe, he could feel the heat coming off of it. And it was intense. Not enough to burn his hand, of course, but it was plenty hot. Head coming up, hand still over the mark, he looked at Harry. His godson had his head lowered, eating, but you could tell by a tick in his jaw that he wasn't real happy.
Looking over at Bill, he watched at Fleur hugged the man tight, sobbing, head on his shoulder. With that, she was vowing to do something or find a way to break the bond. Then she began to loudly profess her love for him, going so far as to try to kiss him. It was then Sirius' mark began to throb madly. It was as though Harry's anger over this was channeling into it. Another look at his godson saw a slight flush on his face. Rather than eating now, he had his hand down on the bench, but and was clutching his wand tightly. Oh, this wasn't good. And he could understand it. Though they expected dramatics from Fleur, this was going way overboard. Bill was trying to get her to back off, glancing at Harry as he did, but she wouldn't, clinging to him tighter, sobbing loudly.
Seeing Remus glance at him, eyebrow up, obviously wondering what was going on, Sirius cleared his throat unevenly. Quietly, he said, “I know Fleur is upset. That's expected, we all get that, but she needs to back away. I'm not sure what's going on, but if she doesn't, I'm sure something very bad will come from this.”
Taking that for what it was, Remus whispered something to Tonks. She then slid over to the upset French woman, trying to get her to let loose of Bill. It didn't work, though. Instead, Fleur clung to him tighter, kissing him, pressing tightly to his body as she hung on to him.
Feeling Harry's leg start to bounce up and down, Sirius looked back at Bill, who was desperately trying to get Fleur off him. Oh, hell, whatever was coming if she didn't get a clue wouldn't be nice! Leaning over to Cissy, who was fairly close to him and watching intently, he whispered to her, hoping she would go get help.
Happy to do something besides focus on how bad this situation was, Narcissa stood then went to go try to help her niece pry Fleur off Bill. Like with Tonks, though, it didn't seem to help, just making Fleur cling tighter to Bill.
Even Bill, who was desperately trying to get her off him, couldn't manage. He could feel the burn and tingle from the mark, not to mention Harry's anger. That wasn't unexpected. Harry hated Fleur. Oh, he never said that aloud, of course, but he did. The issue wasn't Fleur liking him, just what she tried to do to 'land' him was the issue. When it became obvious that he wasn't interested, she pulled out everything she could, including working with her allure to entice him. Then came the overboard areas of moving here, clinging to him, announcing they were engaged, all that. He had made it clear to her to back off, but she didn't. She just kept pressing forward. That's where Harry's hatred of her came in. Then there was the time Fleur had shoved Harry away when they were sitting together, just talking. That was all it took for Harry. And he understood that completely. Panting, he said, “Fleur, you need to let loose! For your own safety! Just—back away!”
Watching as both Tonks and Narcissa tried to manually pry Fleur's arms off Bill, Sirius winced as that tingle grew more intense and the burn hotter. Shaking his head, he leaned close to Harry, making sure his face was turned away from everyone, then whispered, “Just calm down. Let them get her off him.”
“I'm trying,” Harry whispered back, desperately trying to focus on anything but what he was hearing from her and feeling through the bond. He couldn't quite manage though. Whatever she was doing was setting off very unpleasant things for him. He didn't understand it either. No, he didn't like Fleur, that was clear to most that knew of the situation, but he had never felt anything like this. In the past, he had always been content to let Bill handle it. After all, his lover knew what he was doing with that end and Harry knew Bill didn't care for Fleur. This though—he didn't know where it was coming from. Shaking, he told Sirius, keeping his voice down, “I can't, Sirius. I don't know why either. It's triggering all kinds of things I can't control. It's never been like this either! I swear!”
Putting a hand on Harry's back, he watched, wide-eyed, what was going on with the beautiful woman. Oh, this was going to end up badly!
Finally, Narcissa and Tonks managed to get Fleur's arms off Bill. However, as they were trying to coax her away, Fleur, sobbing loudly, threw them off then wrapped herself back around Bill, clutching him tightly. It was then there was a sound like a soft explosion and she was blown back into the wall on the far side of the room. Stunned, Sirius stood and watched Narcissa and Tonks tend to the woman, not sure what to do. He didn't think it was wise for him or Bill to go anywhere near her, with what just happened. Shaking his head, he breathed, “Bloody hell!”
Standing himself, watching, Remus looked around, stunned. Stammering and shaking his head, he said, “I think—yeah—um—most everyone needs to not touch any of us for a time. At least until we can figure out what's going on and how to stop some of this.”
Watching to make sure Fleur wasn't really hurt, Bill muttered, making sure only Sirius and Harry could hear, “We need to talk, alone, when we get done eating.”
“We do,” Harry nodded, keeping an eye on what was going on to make sure Fleur wasn't hurt. He was now feeling plenty guilty over what happened, though he had desperately tried to stop it.
“After breakfast, we'll hide out for a few awhile to try to figure this out,” Sirius whispered back, sitting down. Oh, bloody hell, this was a nightmare and they needed nothing to make it worse or more dangerous!
“I couldn't stop it no matter what I did,” Harry said, looking between Bill and Sirius. They were holed up in one of the small sitting rooms after breakfast, trying to figure out what happened. Fleur was gone, thankfully. Tonks took the woman with her went she left. The others were trying to sort through part of this themselves, so this didn't look odd. Harry had quickly run them both through what he felt while dealing with it.
When he finished, he shook his head and told them, “Look, I don't like Fleur. I'll admit to that. It's a lot of things that brought that on. I wouldn't do anything to hurt her though! All along I've let Bill handle it. That works for us. He takes care of it and backs her off when she gets too overly—whatever. I've never once thought about hurting or even snarling at her. We knew that when it ended it wouldn't be nice on her end. I expected that. I even expected something like she did. Just—the reaction—I don't know where it came from. Honestly? I don't think I've ever been that angry at anyone in my life!”
Hand on Harry's back, Bill patted it then shook his head before looking at Sirius. “He's right. I've always taken on Fleur. Harry doesn't do anything. If it gets bad, he's walked off. I've not once seen him get more than slightly annoyed by it.”
Smoothing down his goatee as he thought this over, Sirius shook his head. “Bloody hell! I'm not sure here where it came from then. Shite! I've seen Harry around you and Fleur. There was nothing even close to the reaction he showed. And she's been plenty clingy when he was around. I get this was emotional, but it didn't warrant that. And I have no clue where it came from. It also worries me what might come with the two of us as well.”
“What do you mean?” Bill asked, brow furrowed, as he looked at Sirius.
“How protective we are of Harry,” Sirius told him softly. “If someone starts with him, it might set off the same thing with us. Or even to a lesser degree if someone starts with either of us. I don't know.”
“I didn't think of that,” Bill groaned, running both hands through his hair. “That we don't need.” Shaking his head, he said, “We need to figure it out, though. And try to find a way to stop it.”
“I go for just up and leaving the room until we do,” Harry said, looking between the two. “If we aren't there, nothing continues. It might be odd, but everyone saw the reaction. They just don't know the reason behind it.” Quietly, he added, “Charlie, Fred and George might. They have their own problems though.”
“Let's go with that,” Sirius nodded. “We'll add it to the list of odd reactions, just not give the history of what might have brought it on. Then we make it clear that if we feel it again, we're leaving to get it under control so no one gets hurt.” Quietly, he said, “I think we should fill Remus in. He won't say anything to anyone.”
“Lucius has to come wherever he is, Sirius,” Bill pointed out.
“Well, yes, he does,” Sirius sighed, stroking his goatee. “With how Lucius is, he's not going to say a word. He knows to keep things to himself. And if the bond is that tight, he may not be able to because of Remus. We just won't get with Charlie yet, or the twins, because of who they're attached to.”
“I'm betting they got it anyway, at least those three,” Harry sighed, shaking his head. “They know I don't like Fleur.”
“Probably,” Bill chuckled, grinning just a little. “At least a part of it. I'll try to get something across to at least Charlie later. As bad as the bond with Snape is, I'm not going to chance that chunk. At least not for now.”
Looking down at his wand hand as there was a lull after that, both of the others seeming to think it over, feeling it ache, Harry sighed. Then he said, tone weary, changing topics, “And I need some more of that junk for my hand.” Shrugging, he added, “It's going to rain.” He knew from experience that if he didn't get it soon, it would be a lot worse to deal with.
“I have some upstairs. We'll get it when we're done here,” Bill told him, putting a hand on his back.
“That's another thing we need to get Remus involved in,” Sirius told them both firmly. “We have to figure out that chunk and get help before it grows worse.”
Thinking it over then looking at Harry, who was glancing at him, Bill gave a tired nod. “If you can get their assurances that part of this doesn't come out. It's coming anyway, we know that, we just don't want to add fuel to an already huge fire. This is already plenty bad. We don't need it made worse by this coming out yet. Because I guarantee we haven't dealt with the worst yet.”
“It's not anyone's damned business anyway,” Sirius told him firmly. “You both have the right to keep it quiet if you want. I'll make it clear, though. Let me see what I can manage.”
Seated in a chair in front of the bed in Sirius' room, Remus had a hand over his mouth as he pondered what he was just told. Glancing back at Lucius, who was pacing behind him, he said, tone distracted, “I wonder if we'll get the same thing.”
“I don't know,” Sirius said honestly, glancing between the two from where he was lounging on the bed by Bill and Harry. “I think it's something we need to worry about though.”
Stopping and looking at the three, arms folded over his chest, brow furrowed, Lucius asked, to clarify, “You felt something in the bond mark before it was set off?”
“We did,” Bill confirmed with a nod. “And it wasn't a pleasant feeling either. That we can assure you.”
“And nothing before this set off a similar reaction, though you've dealt with part of it before?” Remus asked gently, looking at Harry.
“Nothing, I swear,” Harry said with a shake of his head. “It's never even been close. Like I told Sirius; I let Bill handle her. He's done fine with that chunk, so it doesn't bother me other than I just don't like her. It's obvious why though.”
“I'm going to take a flier and say this is probably coming, in some form, for all of us,” Lucius sighed. “The bond marks are all different, something that tells me they signify something different for each of us affected, but I'll bet some reactions we'll all get, at least in some way.”
“At least we have some foreshadowing for part of this,” Remus sighed, shaking his head. “That I do like. There's enough here that's blindsiding that something that may end up dangerous is a part we need to prepare for. All of us do.”
“Let Remus and I see what we can manage with getting this across to the others,” Lucius imparted, sounding slightly defeated. “Severus is going to be the worst with that. We need him to calm down before we even attempt that. Draco—I can impress upon him to keep it quiet.”
“We won't give away the parts about the prior relationship, of course,” Remus assured the three with a placating gesture. “At least to the ones that don't know. I'm certain your brothers will guess some of it, Bill.”
“That's fine,” Bill told him with a nod. “It should give them enough of a hint that they know where it's coming from.”
“I'm wondering if the prior relationships that are established between the three of you might be affecting this,” Remus pondered aloud, looking between them. “You and Bill don't have a close one, Sirius, but Harry does with both of you. Just a different kind. None of the rest of us have that.”
“Not something I thought of either,” Sirius said, glancing around.
“We do need to add that to the pile to ponder,” Lucius said, brow furrowed. “It has to affect part of this.” Tapping his foot, thinking it over, he then said, “I say we pay close attention to what you three are dealing with. That might give us a hint as to what we can do to help the rest of us in this situation. If you find something to work, it might correlate for us as well.”
“We'll just make sure to keep it quiet until it comes out about Harry and Bill,” Remus added.
“That's fine,” Bill told him with a nod. “I just don't want the major explosion over all of it coming at once. We'll handle it better if we can do it in doses.”
“It's none of anyone's damned business anyway.” Sirius said bluntly. “I plan to make that clear even after it comes out.”
“I'm in complete agreement,” Remus assured him. “Just keep a running record of what you're dealing with that you don't want parts out about. We'll use that to help.” Changing topics, he asked, “What's the other problem? You said it was health related?” Stopping, he glanced between the three.
Sighing, Sirius then walked them through what they had discussed the day before. When he was done, he said, looking between the two, “I don't know what to suggest to help. Remus was always better with this chunk than I was. It's something we need to take care of before it gets worse.”
Before Remus could say anything, Lucius said, firmly, “He needs to go to a Healer, quickly. Arthritis in Wizards can develop into something far worse than in Muggles. The magic drives it and makes it mutate. This is one you do not want to play with. I've seen several who've developed forms of it. None of them are nice.”
“Understood,” Bill said with a firm nod. “It's just how to get him help is the problem. We can't just show up at St. Mungos. Too many questions are going to come if we do that. And we don't want to answer any of them because it'll cause all kinds of problems we don't need. If we could have managed last year, it would be fine. As close to his birthday as we are, we want that to come rather than the mess that will play out if it becomes known how his hand was hurt. And if the other side of this mess hears about it, we have even worse problems. You know they still have plenty of influence in the Ministry. What they can manage with that I don't know, but we don't want to chance it.”
“Very true,” Lucius sighed, rubbing a hand over his face. “Let me think—I know a few private Healers we might be able to get him to. I'm going to put out some feelers to see what we can manage. I agree; no St. Mungos. That's a nightmare waiting to happen. They would figure out about the bond in seconds then who knows what the other side might manage to use it for. It's best we handle this on our own.”
“Let me look a couple of potions up to see what we can use. I know a few that might do better until we can get Harry to a Healer. At least he'll be more comfortable.” Remus told them, looking between the three.
“I would normally say get Severus involved, as he would know better than we do what could be used. With all he's dealing with, that wouldn't be wise,” Lucius sighed.
“And it would get back to Albus in seconds. We don't want that either,” Bill told him firmly.
“Very true,” Lucius conceded with a nod. “Let me see what I can find for you. If the three of you go together, the bond shouldn't be a problem. We'll just use a glamour or something on Harry to keep him safe. I'll send an elf over to the Manor today to grab some papers I have then start contacting people. We'll go from there.”
“We'll get him there if you can get the appointment, Lucius,” Sirius told him firmly.
“I'll manage, just give me a little time,” Lucius assured him.
Flopping back on the bed after the two left, Sirius groaned and rubbed both hands over his face. “Alright, we got some things in motion. Let's hope this doesn't get any worse. And we don't get something that is more violent than what we saw earlier.”
Holding the now sleepy Harry close, Bill sighed, “We can hope. Don't count on it, Sirius. What's coming that we're going to have to deal with is going to be worse than Fleur.”
Looking at Bill, Sirius asked, “Your mum?”
“Oh yes,” Bill sighed as he nodded. “Ginny, Ron and Hermione won't be any better. And I don't see us just being able to walk out of the room either.”
“Fuck!” Sirius groaned, realizing Bill was right.
“And I don't want to even consider what might come if something is said that sets both of us off,” Bill told him softly. “With what's bound to be said with some of them, that's a damned good possibility.”
“Double fuck,” Sirius muttered. Sighing, he said, “Which means we have to find a way to deal with this before that explosion comes. And I have no idea where to even start figuring it out.”
“Me either,” Bill admitted, shaking his head.
Lying there, Sirius tried to think, but nothing was coming to mind. He just hoped that some of this could hold out a couple of days before it happened. Maybe they could come up with something or work it out with Remus and the others to find a way around it. If not, things would get ugly, fast!
