Chapter 2: The Caretaker and his most "gracious" host
Disclaimer: In first chapter.
In the whole of Severus' life, he never envisioned that he would be the Butler of such a grand Manor. Actually he never thought that he would be a Butler, following the orders of another "master". This was more of a normal employer/employee relationship. But how Severus came to work for his current employer was entirely different than how he "volunteered" for The Dark Lord and Albus Dumbledore. Firstly, Severus received a letter, asking him to come and be the head butler of the esteemed Tuerie Manoir . While it could have been a joke, the stationary the letter was written on looked and felt very expensive, with a very official seal closing the envelope. Severus didn't know what family or organization the coat of arms on the seal belonged to, but he figuered that it wouldn't hurt him to see what it said(well it wouldn't after he checked it for any hexes or curses). The letter read:
Dear Mr. Severus T. Snape,
I am writing this letter to you in the hopes that you would take into consideration my offer of becoming the head butler of my etsate, Tuerie Manoir. I know that you have no prior experience of being a caretaker of any kind, but I believe that you would be perfect for what I have in mind. Your main duties would be mainly overseeing the rest of the staff, and seeing to any guests that I may have at the manor. You would also be handsomely paid for your services in the the sum of £100,000, I also know that you are a Potions Master so you will have unlimited access to my Potions lab and any and all ingredients that I have for you to brew whenever you are free from your duties. Enclosed with this letter is a check for £10,000 for you to keep whether you choose to accept the position or not. But if you do accept, please come to the manor on July 2. Your uniform will be provided for you in your room and any other instructions will be waiting for you upon your arrival.
Best Wishes,
JPS
Secondly, included with the letter was the aforementioned check for £10,000 that was his to keep whether he agreed to the position or not. This, plus the largely inflated salary, was a big incetive for him to accept. Lastly, whenever there weren't any guests to cater to, he could still brew his potions. Despite the clear perks laid out for him, Severus had this feeling in his stomach, that told him it was a bad idea to accept the job. That this job would be, not to say that he hasn't made many, the biggest mistake of his life and that he would come to regret his decision for the rest of his, however long that may be, life.
...
Disregarding his gut feeling, Severus accepted the position and made plans to travel La Isla de Funesto. Spending most of his years in the dungeons of Hogwarts and a self imposed isolation, most wouldn't think that Severus was much of a sunny island person. They would be mostly right. Severus wasn't one to frolic around in the sun and sand. But sitting by the ocean, reading a good book, and having a drink was more his speed. Anyway, Severus wasn't here for a vacation. He was here to work. At first glance, the manor looked inviting and the perfect place for a vacation in paradise; with its' perfect white sand, the crystal blue water, and the sun casting everything in a warm golden glow, it was the perfect picture of serenity. Upon closer inspection, Severus couldn't help but shudder as his feelings from earlier turn into a cold, hard rock of dread in the pit of his stomach. "Will you be needing anything else, Sir?" the ferryman asked him, setting his suitcases down onto the ground next to him. Severus wanted to tell him to take him back to the mainland as quickly as possible, but instead he said, "No, that will be all. Thank you." "Not a problem." With that the ferryman left, and Severus collected his luggage and made his way up the path to the manor. Every step that he took closer to the manor, his feelings of dread became bigger and bigger, and it took everything he had to keep from calling for the ferry to come back. The house itself wasn't scary or foreboding. It was just the feeling it gave off that made him want to turn tail, and run and never look back. But he had more dignity than that. So he squared his shoulders, held his head up high and made his way into the Manor.
Upon his entry, Severus was greeted by a very stern looking woman and two young men, one on either side of her. She reminded him of Minerva, with her steel grey hair pulled into severe bun like hers, she even wore the same expression that the cat animagus was famous for. "Welcome to Tuerie Manoir, I hope that had you a good trip and had no troubles getting here Mr. Snape. I am Olivia Wyndham, one of the maids of the estate and it will be a pleasure to have you be apart of this staff." said Olivia. "If you would follow me, I can take you on a quick tour of the manor." "Thank you, but that will not be necessary. If you could just show me to my room that would be greatly appreciated." Severus said. "Well then, these two young men will show you the way. Good day." With that, she turned around and walked away, the two men grabbed a suitcase each, and led him to his room.
............
It had been two weeks since Severus had come to Tuerie Manoir, and he has yet to be introduced to his new employer. The most contact that he's had is the first letter and the letter telling him when to be at the manor. Setting up his routine and getting used to the manor took up most of his time so he didn't really think about the weirdness of his situation, but after his first few days he noticed there were wards all around the manor and the entire island. There were even wards stretching out into the ocean. He could recognize the wards for anti-apparation and magic dampening. There was one that he didn't know, but it wasn't active so he gave it no second thought. He wasn't to upset at the wards, the entire staff (apart from Severus that is) were made of muggles, so the wards made sense if you didn't want to exspose magic. What bothered Severus, was why didn't his employer inform him of the wards. He found it blatantly dishonest and suspicious that this bit of information was kept from him. Something like wards to keep him from apparating and using his magic weren't small things that you could conviently overlook. But besides that there wasn't anything else that was too horrible about the job. Despite the size of it, it was relatively easy to manage.
The staff were a likeable group of people, even though with the size estate, they were grossly understaffed. The estate could easily comfortably hold over 150 inhabitants, but there were only eight maids, four porters, two chefs, one groundskeeper, and one marine specialist, which is just a fancy way of saying he handles the boats. There was also what Severus assumed to be an assistant head butler, named James. His purpose not yet known, but what he did know was that his 'assistant' was grating on his last, and very thin, shred of patience. His name didn't help his cause either. Since Severus had been there, he'd done nothing except follow him around, annoying Severus with his incessant prattle. Always finding a reason to be in Severus' personal space, with the exception of the last few days. When he wasn't doing that, he was in the study doing who knows what. But overall, Severus found his new situation to be very pleasant.
As Severus retired to his room for the day Severus found a letter on his dresser. It was of the same quality of his other letters from his mysterious employer, it even had the same seal on the back. He opened the envelope expecting another set of instructions or some sort of clue as to who his employer was. What he found was something that confirmed his first gut feeling of turning down this offer. Inside was a letter that Severus prayed was only a joke. It read:
Dear Mr Severus Snape,
I am writing you to inform of 12 guests arriving tomorrow. They will be coming to my manor expecting a vacation and a harmless game of detective, but I assure you the game that I have in mind for the coming week will be much more murderous. During the coming week there will be a series of murders that the guests will have to figure out how I did it. If they guess right , they will get to live another day. But if they are wrong, they become the next candidate for 'elimination'. Whoever is left by the end of fhe week will not only unmask me as the killer but will be able to leave the island with their lives. Your part and the rest of the staff's are simply to act as indifferent referees, carrying out my whims. You will follow all of my orders to the specifics. If everything goes right you and the rest of the staff will also get to leave this island alive. While I do not want to kill you, I will if I need to.
Be smart,
JPS
Severus' first reaction to the letter was to laugh, and while he did let out a little chuckle, he had more composure than that. He then paused to actually think about the letter. The words on the paper seemed very serious; for all he knew it could be a joke. But just to be on the safe side he was going to send a patronus to the nearest witch or wizard. "Expecto Patronum." he said. Nothing happened. So he tried it again, and again, and again, and it was the same results everytime. Nothing. That's when he remembered his earlier observations of the manor...and the manor's wards...the magic dampening and the anti-apparation wards. Severus then remembered the phone, he'd just used it yesterday to confirm the food that was delivered for the week. So, he went to the study to use phone and there he found the surprisingly quiet James...and the arrow that was sticking out of James' throat. Now, while Severus was no stranger death, he been the reason for quite a few, he didn't expect to find some random muggle with an arrow in his throat on a tropical. He didn't inspect his body too much, as glaringly obvious as his death was Severus continued on to the phone, only to find that it too was dead. He made his way back over to the desk to see if there was any other way of communication. As he looked around he noticed that under one James' hands there was another of the envelopes. Opening it, he found another letter. It read:
I see that you have found James and I hope that you realize that I am deadly serious. For the rest of the week you are to follow every instruction that I have given you to the letter, and then you and the staff will be safe and allowed to leave. Tomorrow when the guests arrive you will nit try to warn them or the ferryman. That will resultin the deaths not only you but the guests, the ferryman, and the rest of the staff. Do not force my hand
JPS
Severus dropped the note, and ran to the adjoining room recalling a radio in there that he could use to call someone...anyone. When he reached the cabinet where it was stored, he opened it, only to find the radio smashed to pieces. A little sticky note, that said 'Did you think that I was that stupid?', rested on the broken pieces. 'How did he find himself in these situations? One crazy psychopath after another.' Severus thought to himself. He walked from the room intent on going back to his suite, when he deciced to gather the rest of the staff and gage their reactions on their new instructions. When they all came to the entrance hall, it seemed to Severus that they weren't bothered by their employers' instructions at all. They seemed to think that it was a joke. If hadn't have seen James body for himself than, he too would have seen this as a joke.
"Alright Severus, why are we here. We know there are guests coming tomorrow, we don't need a pep talk." said Hal, the marine spec- you know what, the boat man. He was another that tap danced on Severus' nerves. He was obnoxiously outspoken and just a very loud individual. "Mr. Maverick, if you've gotten even remotely the same letter I have then you should know why I have you gathered here. Besides, I don't give pep talks."Severus sneered. "That letter was probably nothing but a joke and I'm going to prove it to you." Severus contemplated showing them James body as an example of how mush this situation is not some elaborate hoax, but Hal himself would give them a live demonstration. Hal made his way down the beach and to the boats. Severus and the rest of the staff followed him down to the docks and watched as he climbed onto the boat and started it up. As it started pulling away, Severus thought that maybe 'JPS' actually did forget about the boats. That is until the blew up. The force of the knocked them to the ground and left little doubt of Hal' s survival and confirmed everyone's doubt of whether this whole thing was a joke or not. (2)
