Chapter 3
Pacing back and forth in what was Voldemort's fucking bedroom, and if that wasn't the absolute height of irony Sirius didn't know what was, arms crossed over his chest, he was trying to think. That wasn't as easy as normal as his thoughts were all over the place.
First thing that came to mind was that he had to get himself and Harry the fuck out of here. A very close second was that he was going to figure out who in the name of Merlin's skid-marked boxers pulled this stunt and how he was going to get revenge for it. After that—well, there was plenty and not all of them definable. It didn't help matters a damned bit that he was irate, worried, confused and all manner of other things. That just muddled the thought process. Which meant he had to focus, but he couldn't quite manage that yet. Though plenty was warring within him, the first thing that came to mind was protecting Harry. That was a given and he would do it. He was just going to have to stay on top of his game to manage it as he had no idea what the evil son of a bitch might pull.
Stopping, he glanced at the only chair in the room and looked at his godson. Yeah, Harry didn't look real happy either. In fact, he was sitting there, head in his hands, while Hedwig was perched on his shoulder, grooming his hair. That was enough to tell him Harry was probably as stressed, if not more so, than he was. Sighing, he asked, “Any idea who might have pulled this stunt and why?”
“Only one,” Harry sighed, not lifting his head. “And you know who that is. As for the why—no clue. Why he would pull a stunt like this and use that—whatever it was, is beyond me.”
“The Malfoy brat,” Sirius said grimly, eyes going flinty. Oh yeah, that made sense, what with how that little bastard was. “Did you see him anywhere around when that—whatever began to spew smoke?”
“I didn't see anyone but the Hufflepuff first years and it sure didn't come from them,” Harry said, lifting his head and looking at Sirius. With a sigh and shrug, he admitted, “I really wasn't paying any attention to what was going on around me. It was—I was wrapped up in my thoughts and how to deal with a few things.”
“Understood,” Sirius sighed with a nod. “After all, you should be able to walk the damned halls at the school without worrying about someone pulling this shite. And there’s no shot in hell that first years would be able to brew something that complicated.”
“Not unless they were Hermione,” Harry snorted. “They didn't throw it. I put up a shield to protect them. That's about the last thing I remember other than someone saying my name. I think that was Professor Sprout, though I can't be sure.”
“It's a good thing you put up a shield, because if you hadn't, they would have been affected the same way you were,” Sirius groaned. “And being forced through the same damned thing we are.”
Feeling ill at that because of that dream thing, Harry sighed, trying to think. Pondering the message bit and looking at Hedwig, he discounted using her. He was damned sure that if the evil git said he made it to where she couldn't get a message out, he did. Everything else he knew wouldn't work either. Thinking over plenty that was said since the Order was activated, he asked, “You told me once that Order members had a way to contact each other in an odd way. Would that work this time?”
Head whipping in Harry's direction, Sirius said, “It might. I don't know. Let me try.” Lifting his wand, he conjured his Patronus then sent off as detailed of a message as he could for Remus, making damned sure to include that he risked getting caught if one was sent back. Watching the dog then dash through the wall, Sirius lowered his wand. “That may get through. I don't know. We just have to wait and see. It's doubtful, even if it does, that they can do much to help. It will just mean they know where we are, well, you know, and what's going on. Nothing more.”
Looking at the wall where Sirius' dog vanished through it, Harry sighed. “We're in real trouble.”
Though not wanting to admit that aloud because that would confirm in his mind they were, Sirius gave a reluctant nod then said, quietly, “We are. Don't worry, I'll protect you.”
“I think we both need protecting,” Harry told him quietly. Eyes landing on all their stuff, he asked, tone curious, “Why did it pull us here, Sirius? I get that Voldemort would have had come with us, wherever that is, but this makes no sense.”
His own eyes flickering to where their shite was piled, Sirius admitted, “Something else I have no clue about. I really don't. And it makes no form of sense to me. I guess it's another bit we'll have to figure out as this goes on. Along with a shite-tonne else, like what the hell else we can expect.” Walking over, Sirius perched on the arm of the chair Harry was seated in. Putting a hand on the back of Harry's head, he leaned down and kissed him on the top of it. “We'll manage. Don't worry. How? Yeah, no fucking clue there, but we will.”
“Only we could get ourselves into this mess,” Harry groaned, leaning against Sirius.
“Yeah, only us,” Sirius agreed with a dry snort and shake of his head.
“The Board has been contacted,” Albus said, looking between Minerva and Severus. “They alerted the DMLE. We can expect them here within the hour. All evidence will be turned over to them and they will handle it from there. I've been advised that all parties involved will be questioned, including the first years that saw the incident. This will be handled exactly by the book with none of us stepping in to try to help. That I was told firmly.” Looking between the two, he asked, “What have we done to ensure this goes smoothly?”
“Misters Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle are locked in a secure room without their wands. I have the Slytherin dorms locked down and all of my house is in the Great Hall for the duration,” Severus imparted, looking dour. “I haven't gone in and looked to see if I could find anything. That I'll leave up to the DMLE. No one has been told why this is happening, so we can expect wild rumors. We'll handle those as they come up.”
“The Hufflepuff first years are in Pomona's office with her so that they are as untainted as we can get them,” Minerva added. “None of us want to chance them talking to anyone then this spreading through the castle.”
“That's for the best, yes,” Albus nodded. “I have the evidence here. That's all it should take.”
“What will happen to the three that pulled this stunt? Do you know?” Severus asked, a tight look on his face. He hoped that there was something Albus could do to mitigate the circumstances and that a hard slap on the wrist was applied, but he wasn't sure. This warranted plenty and punishments, but he didn't want it going over the top as that would just cause massive problems.
Sighing, looking old, Albus shook his head. “As the DMLE has been called in and this is a case of a Dark, illegal potion, not to mention that Mr. Potter was pulled away then forced into a bonding with someone, the three can expect to have the book thrown at them. Couple in the fact that several first years were also in the vicinity and would have been drawn in as well if Harry hadn't conjured that shield, then you have the making of a nightmare for the three. The chance that any of those first years had encountered their counterpart was there. That meant at the age of eleven they would have been forced into a bond as well. None of that bodes well for the three young men.”
Tight look on her face, hands clasped in front of her, Minerva felt slightly ill over that. “I don't think any of us thought of it that way,” she admitted, thankful that Harry was swift enough to shield the younger children.
Looking at Severus, who was gazing at him, Albus added, voice lowering, “And if they brewed that potion in the dorms, you can expect to be called on the carpet as well, Severus, for not properly overseeing those in your house. As will everyone in that dorm. What happened affected Harry in a way that no one can ever undo it. There is a reason that potion is deemed Dark and was made illegal.”
A black look of pure fury on his face, Severus ran a hand over his face and shook his head. He was already envisioning hexes he wanted to use on Draco. Curtly, he said, “Understood.”
“If any of the students knew what Draco was brewing, they are in real trouble,” Albus added softly, looking up as he heard the staircase start. It wasn't nearly enough time for the DMLE proper to assemble, so he was wondering what was going on. Seeing Kingsley, Tonks and Remus' names, his brow furrowed. Straightening up, he folded his hands on the desk and waited.
Coming in and looking around, a grave look on his face, Kingsley said, “Tonks and I have to get to the Ministry. Before we were called in, something came that all of you need to see.”
Assuming it was part of this mess, Albus motioned them to go on. “What do you have for us?”
Glancing around at the paintings, who were all paying close attention, Remus said, cryptically, “It was a Patronus from someone.”
“You can speak freely,” Albus assured him. “Who was it from?”
“Sirius,” Remus said. “I can't—I don't understand most of what he said, so let me cast the shade of it so you can hear it.” Seeing Albus nod, Remus lifted his wand and cast something like a ghost of the image of Sirius' dog so that Albus could hear what he said. When it finished, he said, “Sirius' things, all of them, are gone. Just vanished. We were all downstairs at supper, waiting for him, so we know he didn't leave the house. I don't know what to make of this.”
Somewhat relieved, Albus nodded, “We understand it.” Looking at Tonks and Kingsley, he said, “You two go. You'll understand when you get to the DMLE. I'll explain it to Remus then he can pass it on to the rest of the Order from there.” Seeing them nod and head out, he conjured one of his normal squishy chairs for Remus then said, “Let me fill you in.”
Apprehensive, not liking what he heard from that Patronus or the looks on Severus and Minerva’s face, Remus flopped into the chair, waiting. By the time Albus finished explaining, he was pale and shaking. “Oh Merlin, no,” he muttered, rubbing a shaking hand over his face.
“While the situation is a horrific one, the fact that Sirius is with Harry tells me he can at least offer some kind of protection. We know what he's like. If there is anyone in this world capable of standing up to Tom and putting his foot down, it's Sirius. That's something we have to count on,” Albus said, looking around.
“At least the mutt has some good uses,” Severus muttered, shaking his head. That, though, pleased him. Despite what the Dark Lord was like, he would get nowhere arguing with Black. If the books Albus found on the topic were correct and they couldn't harm each other, that meant the Dark Lord was in for a fight unlike anything he encountered before in his life. That was good.
“Any clue where they might be?” Remus asked, gazing at Albus. “Sirius said they didn't know. I'm assuming that it's not somewhere we know, like the Dursleys.”
“No, the Blood Wards are gone. They fell shortly after poor Harry vanished,” Albus said softly. “And I just don't know. I'll call in those I can tonight after the DMLE leaves to check out places I do know and see what they can find. If it's how Sirius imparted, it's somewhere even Tom's Death Eaters don't know about. Where that might be is beyond me. We'll look, of course, but I don't expect to find much.”
“Now what do we do, Albus?” Remus asked, slightly panicked by this. “What Harry and Sirius, both, know about what's going on can only give that side an edge we'll never be able to overcome.”
“Young Mr. Malfoy has given them an edge anyway,” Albus imparted, looking angry for the first time since coming to his office. “We have no way to counter what he did. Harry in Tom's hands is about as bad as we can get. There is nothing I can think of that will allow us to overcome that obstacle.” Sighing, he shook his head, “Let me see what I can think of to help. Or a way to contact Sirius that Tom can't detect. I don't want to chance sending a Patronus as we don't know if Tom would see it. There has to be something. It'll just take time to come up with it.” Looking at the pale Remus, he said, gently, “Go to Grimmauld Place. Wait there. I'll get with you about what to do when I can. What's coming tonight is going to take time. I'm also sure that before it's over, students will have heard parts then owls about what took place will take flight. Which means rumors need squelched before they get out of hand. If anyone comes over to get information, tell them I'll get in contact with Order members as fast as I'm able. Just hold off telling them anything the best you can.”
“I will,” Remus said firmly, nodding. Glancing between the three, he asked, “What kind of punishment are the three looking at for this? It's deadly serious and there has to be something. And Draco—please tell me Lucius can't counter whatever is done or do something to mitigate it.”
“In this case, Lucius can do nothing, for all his clout,” Albus said firmly. “I'll ensure that if it looks to start playing out that way. As for the rest—they are in trouble. I'm sure, before the night is over, all three will be out of Hogwarts, unable to return. Whether it's a suspension or expulsion, I don't know. We have to see on that. Charges—I'm not sure of the penalties because of their ages, but punitive measures will come. I just haven't a clue of the severity because of their ages.”
“To brew that potion means they knew just what would come, Albus,” Minerva said, voice tight.
“Indeed,” Albus nodded. “I'm sure that will be brought up as well.” Looking at Remus, he shrugged, “When I know more, I'll let you, and everyone else, know. That's the best I can tell you, sorry.”
Standing, Remus sighed, “I'll do what I can. Let me see. I'm expecting Molly and Arthur to say something quickly as Ron and Hermione are probably wondering where Harry is as we speak.”
“Let me see what I can manage,” Albus told him with a sigh, knowing the nightmare had just begun. Seeing Remus nod and leave, he vanished the chair the man had been sitting in and shook his head. This was about as bad as it could get and he wasn't sure what to do.
Looking around at the sheer mass of bodies in his office, Albus wasn't sure what to do. He had Amelia Bones and Rufus Scrimgeour there, of course, along with several Aurors. There was also Thomas Milne, head of the Hogwarts Board. Of course, the three miscreants and their parents. Then there was Severus, Minerva and Pomona. Even Cornelius was here. Giving an internal sigh, he said, “We have handed over all the evidence we have. What are we looking at?”
“We're looking at multiple, serious charges,” Amelia said firmly, glaring at the three students and their families. “Do we have any idea where Mr. Potter was taken? Or even a hint where we can look?”
“No,” Albus said truthfully, leaving it at that so he didn't have to lie.
“I do believe, as this was done in the school, that the charter bylaws deem it should be handled in-house,” Lucius said, standing tall, looking around. This was horrific and he wasn't sure what he could do to counter what Draco had done. As it was, he was damned sure that his solicitor would end up involved. Not to mention the Dark Lord was going to end up furious over it as there was no way to trace Potter.
“The bylaws don't cover Dark, illegal potions, Lucius,” Thomas shot back, glaring at the man. They all figured Lucius would try to wiggle or come up with something to get his son off. No, it wasn't going to work this time. “As your son knowingly brewed then used such a potion, we turn it over to the DMLE. Every bit of literature out there on this—potion makes it clear it's Dark and illegal. Even our crime novels make it clear it's illegal. There is no mitigation I can see to not let the law take over. His fingerprints are all over the instruments used to brew it. The book in the dorm had his fingerprints on it. A teacher saw him 'throw' the 'bomb'. He knew what he was doing, Lucius! Whatever the why was behind it doesn't matter.”
“The fact that he cast the 'bomb' in front of several first years makes it even worse! If Mr. Potter hadn't cast that shield, they, too, would have been affected, maybe even for the rest of their lives! Your son and his friends took away Mr. Potter's free will to make his own choices about who he wanted to be with,” Amelia told Lucius in a cold tone, eyes flitting to Draco, who was pale and looking at the floor. “You know what happens in our courts when such charges are leveled, Lucius. We take over. This is a case that the Board won't step in to handle the matter and turns it over to us.”
“We do understand mistakes were made,” Lucius conceded with a sigh. Then he was cut off.
“It's not a mistake,” Rufus gruffed, folding his arms over his chest and glowering at the Malfoy brat. “He looked it up, bought the ingredients for it as some aren't in this castle, brewed it, something that took over a week, then threw it. That was not a mistake. It was a premeditated action, Lucius. One that, even if Mr. Potter hadn't found his magical match, still would have affected him in a harmful manner. You know the laws, Lucius, and what comes when you do something like this. He was caught, all there is to it.”
Seeing the flushed Lucius about to argue, Albus cut in and asked, “Now, what are we doing? Arguing the merits of the case in this office won't do us any good.” He hoped that would end it, but wasn't sure.
“We arrest them. All three of them,” Amelia said firmly, flinty look in her eyes as she stared at the three now very pale looking Malfoys. “Rufus will handle that. I'll stay here and take charge of the evidence, a more intensive search of the dorm, interviewing witnesses, all of that. I do believe, because of the age of the others that saw the incident, we need to call their parents in so they know not only what happened, but can be with their children as they are questioned because they are quite young.”
Knowing if he didn't do anything that one of his biggest donors might be lost, Cornelius said, “There has to be a way to handle this quietly. After all, the rivalry between Mr. Potter and young Mr. Malfoy is well known. I see no reason to involve the DMLE.”
“We will handle this by the book, Cornelius,” Amelia told him coldly, shooting him a furious look. “If you're willing to have a full trial for Mr. Potter for producing a Patronus to ward off a Dementor, something that was proven at his trial to have happened, we're going to have one for someone that knowingly broke the law.”
Sputtering, not sure what to say, Cornelius wiped his now sweaty face with his handkerchief. “Now, Amelia, surely we can come to a compromise.”
“We cannot! This potion is illegal for a reason! It will go by the book, Cornelius,” she snarled. “This is not political, so I don't see why you're even here. Don't you have more important matters to attend to?”
“I pride myself on being a hands on Minister, you know that,” Cornelius told her.
“Especially for one your biggest donors,” Rufus told him, glaring at the man. Shaking his head as Cornelius looked to argue, he straightened up then motioned for his Aurors to arrest the three. “The parents can follow and wait at the Ministry while we book them. I would suggest, while they do, they contact solicitors.”
Giving his pale son a squeeze on the shoulder, Lucius looked thunderous. This was horrific and he wasn't sure what he could do to help. Eyes flitting to Severus, they narrowed. The man had always promised to keep an eye on Draco and try to ensure he stayed out of trouble. He had failed at that. While the cuffs were being put on his son, he hissed, “And I would like the Board to look into why a head of house was so negligent that this potion was allowed to be brewed in a dorm he oversaw, if that's indeed what happened. Also why students were so unsupervised that they were able to get something such as that out of the dorm then cast. While that's not proven, the evidence needs looked into. After all, such complaints have been leveled before at the head of Slytherin House.”
“We'll look into it,” Thomas said, glaring at Snape, who was looking at Lucius with a murderous look on his face.
“I shall ensure it does,” Lucius said, lifting his nose then sweeping out with his wife as his son was led away.
Watching Lucius go and waiting for the door to shut, Thomas looked at Snape then his gaze slid to Albus, “First, we need your approval for the dorm search and anything else Amelia needs to take care of.” This was a formality, really, but it was needed before they could begin.
“As always, granted,” Albus told him with a tired nod and a weary look on his face.
“Come with me, if you would, Minerva and Pomona. We need your assistance,” Amelia said, motioning for those that remained to follow her as she swept out.
“Of course,” Minerva said, stiffening up then following after a nod to the others in the room.
Pomona, eyes flitting to both Albus and Severus, nodded as well then followed. This was a horrific night, one she hoped wouldn't get any worse, but she also needed to be there for her young Badgers. That she would do.
Knowing that Lucius was furious and he may need to see what he could do to placate the man, Cornelius excused himself after tutting about negligence on the part of the Board and those in charge of the school. He hoped there was something he could do.
Once the door closed, Thomas glared at Snape and said, “Do you care to tell me how something like this was allowed to go on under your very nose, Severus? You are charged with ensuring such debacles don't take place.”
“I don't know,” Severus said honestly. “I didn't detect anything nor did the spells I put up to ensure that I knew when they were up to something.”
“Obviously, they knew they could get away with it as the cauldron and book that contained that spell, along with plenty of other illegal ones, were all in plain sight in that dorm,” Thomas said, voice tight.
“Severus, like the other heads of houses, is stretched thin,” Albus soothed, hoping to hold off a fight he knew was coming from the thunderous look on the Potion Masters face.
“That is not an excuse,” Thomas snapped, glaring at Albus. “This was above and beyond the normal shenanigans students get up to. Something should have set off a warning considering how Dark that potion was. Which means Severus either ignored it or the students negated the spells, something he is supposed to check several times a week. Either way, it shows negligence on his end.” Eyes flitting back to Severus, he said, tone icy, “As of now, Severus is suspended as head of Slytherin House. Until the investigation is over, he won't be in charge of overseeing them. For now, we'll put Aurora Sinistra in charge. In the morning, I'll convene a Board meeting to discuss what we want to do and measures to put in place so this debacle never happens again.” Seeing Albus about to say something, he shook his head and said, “My word is final. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have plenty to do.” Then he swept out, still furious.
Sighing, Albus looked at the infuriated Severus and shook his head, “Nothing to worry about. Let them do what they want. It'll give you some free time anyway.”
“That's not the point,” Severus hissed, glaring at Albus. “Draco—I don't know what he did as Thomas is right and it should have set something off. We need to know what he did so we can figure out what else he might have been up to.”
“I'll see to it,” Albus said. Standing with a groan, he said, “Go relax, Severus. I'm sure Amelia will need to speak to you before she goes.” Quietly, he added, “And if Tom does have poor Harry and Sirius, you need to stay on your toes to get information. I doubt he'll hide that for long as it'll be too good for him to keep quiet.”
Not having thought of that, Severus gave a firm nod. “I will.”
Putting a hand on Severus' shoulder, Albus guided him out, not pleased with the mess he now knew he was going to have to handle and what else would come of it.
Entering the newly redecorated and expanded room, Tom nodded, pleased. The elves had done a magnificent job on it, especially with how quickly they had to get it done. While it wasn't like having a full floor of a house, it was definitely the size of the dorms at Hogwarts, something that would be more than comfortable for the two. It even had all the amenities they could want save an exit, other than through his room.
Taking a seat, glancing at the irate looking Sirius, who was clutching his wand and glaring at him after having slid over to stand by Harry, he said, smoothly, “Though I want answers for the many questions I have regarding whatever happened, I think that should wait until the morning. I've also managed to gather a few more books on the potion used and have feelers out for more. We'll take those on tomorrow as well. Tonight, though I doubt too much rest will come for either of you, I say we all try to relax. Tomorrow we'll work on the myriad of issues that are here and try to suss out plenty more.” Eyes flitting to Harry, seeing the pained look there, he added, “Like what the connection is between the two of us.” Shaking his head, he focused back and said, “So, we'll leave it here. You both should be comfortable. Rest assured, I've fortified this house to the utmost, so you can't escape. As I mentioned, the only exit is through my room, at least for now. If I don't hear you and wake, Nagini will. She stays in there with me. I've also made her aware to keep an eye out for you. It's my suggestion that you relax the best you can and we'll press on in the morning.” Not waiting to hear what either of them had to say, Tom then stood and swept out of the room, shutting the door behind him.
Glaring at the door after the evil git left, Sirius huffed, relaxing his grip on his wand. Shaking his head, not sure what to do, he sighed and looked at his godson. “Let's at least lay down. After we get something to eat. Neither of us got our dinner.” Seeing Harry nod, Sirius' eyes flitted to the door then he said, “And I'm calling an elf to get us one big bed. It might make you uncomfortable, but we're sleeping together so he can't pull something strange.”
Though his mind hopped back to that—whatever it was that happened before waking up to this nightmare, Harry nodded, understanding what Sirius meant. “That's good by me. Because this is a right ruddy mess.”
“It is,” Sirius groaned. Shaking his head and taking a seat by Harry on the settee, he said, “Maybe some rest will make it to where we can think more clearly. Then we can figure out something. I don't know. We'll see.” Putting his hand on Harry's back, he said, “What do you want to eat?”
“Something light, like sandwiches. I don't know. Not real hungry, honestly. Then there is the situation,” Harry sighed.
“There is that,” Sirius nodded. Calling for an elf, he sent the creature off for food. “Once we're done eating, let's explore a bit to see what's where before lying down. Won't do us any good not knowing what we're dealing with.” Seeing Harry nod, Sirius patted him on the back. “We'll get through this, don't worry. And deal with it as it comes. I'll be right here with you as it happens, don't worry.”
“I know,” Harry said, leaning against his godfather. “And if it was Malfoy that did this, I'm getting even.”
“I think we all will,” Sirius chuckled, kissing Harry on top of the head. Yeah, the brat wouldn't know what hit him if he caused this mess. That Sirius was going to focus on to get him through this nightmare.
