Chapter 2: The Missing Savior
~~~Chapter Begins~~~July 23rd, AC 196: “What do you mean Harry Potter has gone missing? His Aunt and Uncle’s home is the safest place for him; surely he wouldn’t have left without making sure that it was safe for him to do so. Are you certain that you haven’t just been missing him as he been entering and exiting the house?”“I’m sorry Professor, but we’ve been watching for him all week. He hasn’t been seen entering or leaving the house in that entire time. He raced off last Monday and I couldn’t catch up with him in time to find out where he was going. I can’t run while wearing an invisibility cloak, I just trip over it and end up on the ground.”
“I’m sure that he just hasn’t been spending much time outside. You likely missed him returning a week ago and he just hasn’t left the house since then. I’m sure that we have nothing to worry about.”
“But sir, what if something’s happened to him? We can’t just leave whether or not he’s safe up to chance.”
“Very well, give him another week. If you haven’t seen him by then, let me know and I will get in contact with his family to find out if anything has happened to him. Just keep an eye on the house until then. It would also be best if the other Aurors weren’t told about this. The Ministry is already worried enough about young Harry. We don’t need to give them another reason to believe that he might be better off in the Janus Thickey Ward at St. Mungo’s.”
“Yes sir. I’d better go back to London now; Scrimgeour’s starting to ask questions that we really don’t need him to ask.”
Albus nodded and motioned for her to leave. As soon as she was gone, he popped a Lemon Drop into his mouth and glared at the seat she had been sitting in. To say he was angry was an understatement. Harry Potter, the Savior of the Wizarding world, had likely gone missing. Albus was certain he was gone, but it would not do to have Tonks panicking about it. Without the boy, the Master Plan would be ruined. If it hadn’t been for Voldemort buying into that ridiculous prophecy, he could have gotten the glory of defeating the most powerful Dark Lord of the century without relying on the youngest Potter brat. Not that the brat knew that he had older brothers of course.
July 31st, AC 196: “And Harry still hasn’t been found?”“We’ve been watching the house all week without any sign of him.”
“Very well, I will go visit his family. I will contact you once I have returned, to let you know what I have found. If he is in fact missing, we will have to mount a nationwide search. I can only hope that he hasn’t been captured by former Death Eaters determined to bring Voldemort back.”
“Albus, you really don’t believe Harry’s claim about Him being back, do you?”
“Alas I don’t Minerva. I believe that he genuinely thinks that Voldemort has returned, however I do not believe that what he saw actually happened as he saw it. I am not entirely sure if he had a nervous breakdown, or if what he saw was a trick, but I am certain that he did not see Voldemort return. The way he described what he supposedly saw makes me certain that the ritual that Peter used was incorrect, if he actually saw a ritual being performed at all.”
“But Albus, what does it mean if Harry only imagined the entire thing?”
“It means Minerva, that Harry was affected more strongly by the curse that failed to kill him than we originally believed. It may not even be safe for him to return to Hogwarts. Unfortunately, we cannot know for certain until we have found the boy.”
“Sir, do you think he might become the next Dark Lord?”
“I’m not sure Tonks, but we can’t rule that out. Now, I need to go speak with the Dursley family about their missing nephew.”
+++Number 4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surry+++ Albus Dumbledore’s second visit to Little Whinging, Surry wasn’t a late night visit, nor was it one that needed to be kept a secret. This time he was dressed in fancy yet fairly outdated Muggle clothing, a burgundy velvet suit to be exact. He hated having to wear Muggle clothes, but it would be easier to work with the Dursleys if he at least tried to get on their good side by dressing like a Muggle. He apparated to a small and little used alleyway leading off of Privet Drive to avoid having any Muggles see him appearing, and then walked to Number 4 Privet Drive. He rang the doorbell and waited for one of the Potter brat’s relatives to answer the door. Petunia Dursley opened the door and gave him a disgusted look.“What do you want? The boy’s not here.”
“I’m aware of this Mrs. Dursley. That’s why I’m here. May I come in and speak to you about him?”
“The boy isn’t here, there’s nothing to talk about.”
“Mrs. Dursley, I’m afraid I must insist on speaking with your family.”
“Fine! Come in before the neighbors take notice of you.”
She moved out of the way and motioned for him to enter the house. She closed the door with a harsh snap and angrily pointed towards the living room before calling for her husband. A few moments later Mr. and Mrs. Dursley were seated in their living room with Albus Dumbledore, and neither of the Dursleys were happy about having the Headmaster of their nephew’s school in their living room.
“Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, when exactly did Harry go missing?”
“He left the house on July 15th and didn’t return. Good riddance to the little freak, we certainly never wanted him here to begin with. If you ever find him, make sure he knows that he’s not welcome back here.”
“Mr. Dursley, surely you don’t actually feel that way. Mrs. Dursley, you are the boy’s only living blood relative. You must have some affection for him. At the very least, please seriously consider the ramifications that refusing to allow him to return to your home will have on others. He is the Wizarding World’s only hope, and by extension he is also the Muggle World’s only hope. If Lord Voldemort ever manages to return to power, your nephew will be the only one who can defeat him. Your house is the only truly safe place he can stay during the summer, because of special wards made by his mother’s sacrifice to ensure his survival when they were originally attacked by Lord Voldemort.”
“I don’t care what he means to your sort, he’s not stepping foot inside this house ever again. I want you to leave this house and never come back. We should have never allowed that boy into our home in the first place. Now, get out of our house before I call the police!”
“Very well. I had hoped that you would be willing to help us locate your missing nephew. I shall leave.”
Albus Dumbledore stood and left the living room. Once he was out of the house and out of the line of sight of the local Muggle population, he apparated to a spot on the path leading to the gates of Hogwarts. He waved his wand, transforming his velvet suit back into the rather more impressive robes the suit had originally been, as he walked through the gates of the school. Now all that remained was to inform his loyal followers of what happened during his visit to the Dursley house, and of the rather pushy notice he had received from the Ministry that morning but had not yet revealed to his staff. Neither bit of information would be happily received. It was true that he had yet to find a new Defense against the Dark Arts teacher, but for the Ministry of Magic to force him to accept an individual of their choosing because of the bad luck he had faced was truly intrusive and unnecessary.
September 1st, AC 196: The Sorting Ceremony and Opening Feast were over and it was time for Headmaster Albus Dumbledore to make the Start of Term announcements. He stood up and motioned for the students to quiet down. He smiled as the students turned their attention to him.“Now that we have eaten our fill and greeted our returning friends and new students alike, it is time for me to inform you of a few things. I would like to begin by informing our new students that the Forbidden Forest, as its name implies, is forbidden to all students. Our returning students should keep this in mind as well. Our caretaker Mr. Filch would like me to inform our new students and remind our returning students that magic is not to be performed in the hallways between classes. There is also a full list of items forbidden within the castle located on the door to Mr. Filch’s office that students can check at any time. I also have some rather disconcerting news. Unfortunately, we have lost yet another student.
Albus Dumbledore paused for a few moments to let the gravity of his next words sink in. “You are all likely aware of the regrettable loss of Cedric Diggory at the end of last year; I am afraid that the only student who saw Cedric die, young Harry Potter of Gryffindor House, went missing over the summer. We do not know exactly what happened to him; however it is believed that the stress and trauma of the end of last year may have been the cause of his disappearance. A search is currently under way in an attempt to find him, however there has not been very much head-way made. When he is found, he will be brought back to the school if he is deemed safe for other students to be around. I would also like to say that Quidditch team try-outs will be held two weeks from now, for any students in second year or above who would like to play for their House team. Finally, we have a new Defense against the Dark Arts teacher. Allow me to introduce Professor Dolores Umbridge. Now, I think we are all content and-”
“Hem-hem.” The woman who could only be Professor Umbridge stood up. “Thank you for those kind words of welcome Headmaster Dumbledore. In light of the tragedy that happened at the end of last term and concerns about the current standard of education within these hallowed halls, the Ministry of Magic has chosen to take a more direct interest in the education of the current and future school aged generations of Witches and Wizards here at Hogwarts. I am honored to have been chosen by the Minister of Magic himself to help ensure that those standards remain high. Each Headmaster of this prestigious school as brought something new, however we must discourage progress for the sake of progress. As instructors within this school, it is our place to preserve what should be preserved; perfect what can be perfected; and prune practices that ought to be prohibited.”*
She sat back down at the end her speech, having interrupted Albus Dumbledore’s welcoming speech for the first time that anyone at the school could remember. This new teacher was squat with a face that reminded the students of a toad. She was dressed in all pink, including a fuzzy pink cardigan, with a large black velvet bow on her head. She spoke her entire speech in a high, simpering voice. All but a few of the students were completely lost about a minute or two into the new teacher’s speech and had completely missed what she actually meant by what she was saying. The small number of students who were able to follow what she was saying from start to finish were shocked by what they had heard.
“Thank you for that highly enlightening speech Professor Umbridge. As I was saying, I think we are all content and ready to find our way to our respective beds for the night. Prefects, please escort the first years of your House to your common room.”
+++Slytherin Common Room+++ “Draky-Poo! Do you believe the things that everyone has been saying about Potter? I heard that he’s turned dark and the Headmaster has hidden him away to keep the world from knowing that his precious Golden Boy is really a monster.”“Pansy, it does not matter if Potter has turned dark or if he has actually cracked. Either way, I no longer have to put up with him. If you don’t mind, I’d rather like to go to bed now. It has been a long day and I still need to write my mother a letter, you know how she is.”
“Okay Draky-Poo. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Draco Malfoy, Fifth Year male Slytherin Prefect and Prince of Slytherin House, nodded to the young woman who firmly believed that she would be the next Lady Malfoy before standing and heading towards his dormitory. He smirked as he walked through the door to his dormitory, knowing that she wouldn’t be happy to learn that there wouldn’t be a Lady Malfoy for him. He had already found the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, and that person was another male. He just couldn’t publicly announce that he was with that person because it would put both of them in serious danger. It also bothered him that he had to pretend to hate said person. His family knew who he was in love with, and proudly supported their relationship while also keeping it a secret. Though he was happy to get away from Pansy Parkinson, he really did have a letter to write to his mother, as well as one to write to his father about the fact that Harry Potter seemed to be missing. If anyone would know what might have happened to the Boy-Who-Lived, it would be Lucius Malfoy. He also wanted to write to his twin sister, a girl that the Magical World had no idea existed.
Draco moved over to his bed and pulled a quill, an ink bottle, and three sheets of parchment from the drawer of his bedside table. Then he got comfortable on his bed and began to write his first letter. It was easy to write to his mother. She was a kind and loving woman who always had time to help her son and daughter in any way she could, even if the only thing she could do was listen to their problems. His mother would know exactly what to say to sooth his pained heart.
Dear Mother,I arrived at Hogwarts safely. I’m sure that Father has already told you about the new Defense against the Dark Arts teacher. I have a feeling that she won’t be a very good teacher. She actually interrupted Dumbledore’s Start of the Year speech tonight at the feast. She has every intention of doing everything she can to interfere with how the school is run. While I’m not worried about what it means for Dumbledore, I am worried about what it means for other students, and for my own education. I fear that I may need a tutor over the summer to ensure that I am up to par for next year. It’s a shame that this is happening this year instead of next year. I am also worried about Harry. He isn’t at the school, and Dumbledore seems to have no idea what has happened to him. I’m also having a hard time keeping Pansy Parkinson off of me. I was hoping that you might have some advice for me on both issues.
Your son,
Draco Malfoy
Draco reread the words he had written and sighed softly. His mother would worry about Harry, but he needed her advice on what he should do about him. She would also worry about his issue with Pansy because she knew what kind of a girl Pansy was. She was the sort of girl who would turn into a gold-digging woman with no interest in finding someone that she could actually love. Once she found out that he had no interest in her, there was no way of knowing exactly how she would respond to the situation. Harry might well be put in danger from her as well as from the Dark Lord and the supposedly light side. It was something that Draco never wanted to think about, though he forced himself to do so. He sighed and began the letter to his father.Dear Father,I was hoping you could tell me something important. Dumbledore announced that Harry had gone missing during the summer and no one knows where he’s gone. I was hoping you might be able to give me more information than what Dumbledore gave us at the Beginning of Term speech. I hope that he hasn’t found himself in the hands of the Dark Lord. I was also hoping that you could contact Lord Parkinson and convince him that there is no way that I would be willing to marry his daughter. She will not leave me alone and it is truly becoming a problem. I’m also worried about what she might do if or, rather, when she finds out that Harry and I are together. I am also worried about the new teacher. I have a feeling that she won’t be teaching us what we really need to learn this year. I think it would be best if it were arranged for me to have a private tutor this summer, if you haven’t already made arrangements for one. Please let me know your thoughts on these issues soon.
Your son,
Draco Malfoy
Draco shook his head as he finished his second letter. His father would be able to give him the information he needed. If she was at the school because of Harry’s claims that the Dark Lord returned, it was likely that Harry wouldn’t be safe if he did return while she was still at the school. It was unlikely that she would target Draco because his connection to Harry was for the most part unknown to the students at Hogwarts. She would likely focus any negative attention on the House that Harry belonged to as well as anyone who publicly announced their support for the Boy-Who-Lived.
Draco only had one more letter to write before going to bed for the night. His sister was another part of Draco’s life that most of the Wizarding world was unaware of. The Malfoy family loved both of their children, even though they had only directly raised one of them. Draco’s twin sister had been born a Squib. She couldn’t even perform the simplest of spells. In a normal family this would have meant that the child would be encouraged to attend Muggle schools while still being part of their Magical family; but in a family that was as deeply connected to the Dark side of the Magical community such a child was likely to be in serious danger. So Draco’s twin had been raised by a Muggle family with close ties to the Magical world knowing that she was a Malfoy, and knowing that she was loved by her biological family.
Dear Des,I know that I’ve only just returned to Hogwarts and that we saw each other less than a week ago, but I figured that I’d write to you confirming that something has in fact happened to Harry. Dad hasn’t said anything about him, but we both know that doesn’t actually mean much of anything when it comes right down to it. Dad hates telling us things that might make us less than happy. I’m hoping that now that Dumbledore has announced that Harry has gone missing, Dad will tell me anything he knows about the situation. I hope that you’ve made it back to the Colonies alright, and that this letter gets to you quickly. Tell Quatre and Trowa that I say hi.
Love,
Draco
Having completed his final letter, Draco made sure that the ink of his letters had dried before folding the three of them up and putting them, his quill, ink bottle, and wand into the drawer of his bedside table. Then he got into his pajamas and pulled the green and silver hangings around his bed closed before curling up and going to sleep. He would send his letters the next morning when the post arrived at breakfast time.+++Headmaster’s Office+++ Albus Dumbledore paced back and forth in his office. There was still absolutely no word about exactly what had happened to the Potter brat. His patience was truly starting to wear thin. There was no way that the boy could have left using magic, nor had he been in contact with the Weasley family during the entire summer. He did not have any other connections to the Magical world that he could safely get in personal contact with and he had no connections to the Muggle world aside from the Dursley family. His treatment by his Muggle family was no reason for him to run away; he had never experienced anything but neglect at their hands. Unfortunately, the treatment the Dursleys were giving him had ceased to work the way it was meant to. The neglectful treatment that they had been giving him was meant to keep the brat submissive and eager to please anyone who might show him positive attention. In the last year he had transformed from a meek and well behaved little pawn to a suspicious and brooding young man. If it wasn’t for the fact that the Wizarding world needed the boy, Albus would be happy to see him vanish for good.It really was a shame that Voldemort had chosen to believe in the prophecy Trelawney had made and had decided it applied to the youngest Potter child. Still fuming, Albus sat down at his desk and gazed at his Pensive for several moments before beginning to reexamine his memories from the end of the last school year. He had done this several times since first discovering that Harry Potter had gone missing, but he still couldn’t find anything that hinted at why the boy would run away.
There was still the slim possibility that the boy had been taken by someone. He had not publicly believed Potter’s insistence that Voldemort had returned, nor had he privately agreed with the boy. For all the boy knew, Albus hadn’t believed him at all. But the truth was; Albus had known he was telling the truth about Voldemort from the very beginning. Since he actually knew that Voldemort had returned he did know that there was a possibility that one of the Death Eaters had kidnapped the boy. It was also possible that a Muggle was behind the situation. If it had been a Muggle, it could mean bad news for the Wizarding world because it could mean that they might never find the brat again. Without the brat it would be impossible for Voldemort to die, unless the brat had already been killed. Unfortunately there wasn’t really a way to find out if the boy was dead or alive at the current time.
+++Unused Classroom, Charms Department of Hogwarts+++ “Potter had better not have run off to be with some Muggle chit. He’s supposed to marry me! I’m supposed to be the one who gets most of the Potter fortune. Ron, what am I supposed to do? How do we fix this?”“Don’t worry Gin; Mum will know how to take care of this. I’m sure that she’ll know exactly where he’s actually gone and know exactly how to convince him that he needs to marry you.”
“But Ron, what if it isn’t enough? He hasn’t shown any interest in me yet. What if he does decide to go after another girl?”
“Then we’ll use a love potion on him. We’ve put up with him for the last few years, the least he can do is give you a guarantee that you will get his money before he finally has his ‘accident’ and dies.”
“The Potter fortune will be mine. Ron, you send a letter to Mum letting her know exactly what’s going on.”
“Fine, I’ll write the letter tonight and send it tomorrow before class.”
“You’d better. Now let’s get to the common room.”
The two siblings left the classroom, heading for Gryffindor Tower.
+++Gryffindor Tower, 4th Year Girl’s Dormitory+++ Ginerva Molly Weasley, the youngest child of Arthur Weasley and his wife Molly Weasley nee Prewett and the only girl born into the Weasley family for several generations, was not a very happy 14-year-old. In fact, she was absolutely livid. Her ticket to wealth beyond anything her family had experienced in centuries had been foolish enough to run off. He had no right to run off, he had absolutely no right. Grumbling angrily, she pulled her diary, quill, and one of her three ink bottles from her bedside table and began to write in it.September 1st, AC 196Harry went missing over the summer. If it wasn’t for what I would lose if he didn’t come back, I would be happy to never see him again. He’s a disgusting, foolish slob. He has no idea how to act within the confines of proper Wizarding society, no idea what our customs are, and he’s nearly as stupid as the Muggles who raised him. There’s no way he could possibly ever fit into our society. It’s such a shame that he is part of one of the oldest Wizarding families to still exist.
According to Mum, the Potter family is connected directly to the ancient Peverell family. That’s a family that anyone would be proud to be part of. I’ll be so rich and well-connected after marrying him that once he’s met the accident Dumbledore has promised will kill him; I’ll be able to marry anyone I want. I could even catch the attention of someone like Draco Malfoy. He may be a horrible prat, but he is a fairly handsome prat. We could make good looking children if we chose to get married.
With my stunningly good looks, I might even be able to remove some of the pointiness of his face from any children we have. I suppose I will have to have a boy child with Potter. It wouldn’t do for the Potter line to die out, of course. But I refuse to give him anything, any money I get from the Potter family will be MINE and I refuse to share it. I won’t allow my body to carry any other children of Potter’s beyond that one male heir to keep his line alive. I wish that I could go to Malfoy, or whichever wealthy wizard I marry after Potter dies, as a virgin. Unfortunately there aren’t any spells that will reverse the loss of a woman’s virginity. I can at least go to my second husband wealthy and well-connected. My connections to the Potter family will make my second husband even better connected than he would have been without me.
~~~Chapter Ends~~~A/N: First and foremost; I’ve gotten this chapter done about ten days ahead of schedule and I figured that I’d just post it now. I hope to avoid directly quoting the book. At the same time, because of how similarly her speech here and the one in the book are, it does count as paraphrasing so I am taking this moment to cite the book as heavy inspiration for the speech. This is particularly true for the last line.
