After an uneventful lesson with the new Transfiguration teacher (Professor Amitty, who was a peculiar old man), the Eighth years retreated to the great hall for lunch.
Transfiguration had been very dull compared to their amazing Care Of Magical Creatures lesson… Not that anyone wanted to admit that they loved the previously mocked subject.
“No~! Dumble, stop it!” Hermione scolded, attempting to scoop up her deceivingly playful puffskein as he rolled along the table, humming happily to himself the entire time. Ron snickered, his own puffskein asleep on his shoulder, making a soft keening snore as it did. It was adorable.
Harry watched fondly as Hermione had to stand up and chase the happily rolling puffskein down the table. She eventually managed to grab hold of it, putting it on her shoulder after telling it off uselessly (it was very unlikely the fuzz ball understood a word she said) and rolling her eyes as it just began rolling backwards and forwards across her shoulders.
“I thought you said a puffskein would be easy, Mione?” The dark haired girl snickered, grinning widely as she placed the small nest containing her egg next to her plate on the table. Neville came to sit opposite her, placing a small, ratty nest containing a small blue egg on the table.
“Hey guys… How’re you coping with the pets?” He inquired politely, smiling at Hermione’s restless puffskein skirting along her shoulders.
“Easy, my egg is hardly any hassle, and Ron’s puffskein Godric just sleeps all the time… Hermione’s puffskein however…” Harry inclined, grinning from ear to ear.
“Oh do shush Harry!” Hermione scowled, embarrassed by her boisterous pet. Harry laughed, running one hand over her egg as she ate a slice of chicken pie with the other.
“My nest keeps falling apart…” Neville told them mournfully, eyeing the blue egg with an obvious look of frustration.
“Give it here, I’m good at nests.” Harry insisted, holding her hand out and gently pushing her half-finished slice away. Neville scooped the egg out in to his palm before passing the nest over. “You didn’t wind this very tightly Nev, it’s too loose… Have you got any charms on it?” She noted, examining the nest carefully.
“No… Was I meant to?” Neville asked sheepishly, scratching his head.
“Not really, but it makes life easier.” Harry explained, beginning to tighten the weave on the nest to stop it falling apart. She then placed the basic charms she knew on it and handed it back. Neville grinned in thanks and gently popped the bird egg back in. He began tucking into his food, when moments later a soft tapping erupted from next to him. He glanced at his egg as saw the smallest of cracks forming, frowning.
“Should the egg be hatching already?” He mumbled to Harry quietly, staring hard at it.
“Trust you to get the difficult bird… Go see Hagrid at the head table.” Harry chuckled, grinning when Neville abandoned his meal and rushed the nest up to the table, much to the shock of the teachers.
Draco watched Longbottom run to the teachers from where he was at the Slytherin table, assuming he had an issue with his pet already. His eyes moved back to examine Harry, his own egg on the table in front of him. He’d heard nothing from the egg, and he suspected it wouldn’t hatch for at least another day or so.
He couldn’t get over the change. Harry just looked so different as a female.
The blonde considered himself bisexual, and had thought Harry was quite attractive in a scrawny way before… But now… Harry was a beautiful girl. Curvy, full lipped… Angular features, thin faced. She had an hour glass shape despite how slim she was.
Very easy on the eyes. He felt awful liking her, it seemed wrong somehow… But he couldn’t help it. He was surprised he’d been able to focus in their lessons so far, having not sat far from her in either, and having seen the delightful way her chest strained against her button up white shirt. He’d guess she was at least a D, maybe bigger. Not that he’d probably find out, as he firstly doubted he’d ever get close enough to be in a relationship with the fine girl, and secondly was sure Harry was probably a lesbian. She had grown up a bloke, and dated the Weasley girl… She probably still liked girls, even if she had ended it with Ginny Weasley. Ginny Weasley was straight, and had always dated guys.
So their break up was no great surprise, not matter how mournfully the two looked at each other. Draco had seen the way Ginny started when Harry wasn’t looking, seeming so troubled… To be fair, it couldn’t be easy for either of them. They’d always seemed pretty smitten with each other, and now fate had broken them apart.
The blonde almost scoffed at himself for that thought, rolling his eyes. It was a little over dramatic. They were teenagers, it had probably just been puppy love.
Either way, Harry was probably not into guys. The Slytherin Prince checked his pocket watch and picked up his bag, slinging it over his shoulder before scooping up his small nest and placing it securely in the top of his bag. “I need the loo before History of Magic… I’ll meet you there.” He asserted, leaving no room for arguments as he stood and walked briskly out of the hall. The teenage boy made his way to the closest loos, relieving his bladder before washing his hands in front of the mirror.
He wetted his hands moments later, splashing his face and pushing his hair back into something not too dissimilar from his old slicked style. He sighed, leaning towards the mirror to stare at his reflection, his hands braced on the sink. “What am I going to do…?” Draco breathed to himself, closing his eyes and inhaling deeply. He was a teenage boy, and he’d never been in a real relationship. His heightened hormones did not help him think rationally around the attractive girl.
He couldn’t let the situation get the better of him… His pocket watch ‘dinged’ softly, alerting him to the fact it was five minutes until his next lesson. He cursed quietly, scowling to himself as he picked his bag up from where he dropped it by the sink, before turning sharply on the spot and walking purposefully towards History of Magic. He didn’t want to be late to the first lesson of term…
The Malfoy heard footsteps in the hall ahead, before they halted with a small thud. He frowned, walking slower round the corner and doing his best to keep out of sight.
“So, you’re a pretty little lady now Harry…? Or should I call you… Harriet?” A sultry voice cajoled softly, and Draco was sure he heard several laughs at that.
“Harry will do, thanks…” The golden Gryffindor verified, scowling deeply at the group of boys opposite her. He didn’t really know any of them, he was almost certain they were students in the year below… And Ravenclaws, going by their ties. “I’m going to be late, do you mind letting me go?” She thundered more dangerously, making Draco smile from where he was hidden around the corner.
She was a feisty girl… The blonde was sure of that much.
“I never said we were done here…” The voice from earlier stressed, quickly removing Draco’s smile from his face. “…I was wondering if you’d come to Hogsmeade with me this weekend…” The teenager lilted sickeningly, making Harry cringe and try to duck under the arm blocking her way.
“Oh Merlin, we really are done here…” The dark haired girl scoffed, blinking when the stubborn student planted his hand on her chest to stop her. She stared hard at where his hand rested on her bosom, like she wanted the appendage to spontaneously combust.
“Don’t be difficult… I’ll treat you nicely.” The boy promised, winking at his mates and grinning when they sniggered childishly.
“Get your hands off of me…” Harry hissed dangerously, her green eyes full of venom as Draco watched her. No one had noticed him leaning around the corner. The gaggle of boys were far too intent on their goal, and Harry was too angry to look elsewhere. The girl smacked the lead boy’s hand away angrily, and Draco inhaled sharply when he saw the boy raise his hand as if to cuff her.
No way in hell would he have that!
“Flipendo!” Draco raged, stepping forward and watching as his target staggered back unsteadily, pushed by the force of the spell so that he missed his attempt at striking Harry.
Harry turned to look at Draco, red faced and clearly upset, but grateful someone had intervened.
“What in Merlin’s name do you think you were doing…? You cannot treat a woman like that, Merlin, you can’t treat any human being like that! Leave now, before I drag each and every one of you to your head of house to explain your behaviour!” The blonde snapped irritably, watching as the shocked students scarped, alarmed by the interruption. Not to mention none of them would dare cross a ‘deatheater’, legally innocent or not.
“…I could have handled that myself…” Harry insisted quietly after a moment of silent, raising her bright green eyes to the concerned silver orbs of her former rival.
“Of course…” The blonde half scoffed, before realising how scared Harry had been. She didn’t need to be mocked right now… She was frightened.
Which was funny in a morbid sort of way. After all the girl had faced… A couple of scummy Ravenclaws had gotten her all shaken.
“I know you could have. I just couldn’t stand by and watch that lowlife treating you the way he did.” He assured her when she opened her mouth to retort, a scowl already furrowing her brows. At his proclamation her features softened and she frowned, but nodded her understanding.
“Thanks, I guess…” She muttered quietly, chewing her lip and pulling her bag further up her back. “We should be getting to class… We’re really late.” She added absently, turning and walking a little unsteadily down the corridor.
“Are you okay?” Draco asked cautiously, following the girl closely.
“Yes, of course…” Harry touted unconvincingly, glancing over her shoulder at the pale blonde behind her. Aforementioned blonde frowned, but said nothing, looking unsettled.
It was obvious Harry was far from okay… She was just trying to put a brave face on.
“Finally decide to join us then?” Their new professor barked as they entered the classroom, sending a brief smile to Harry before a deep scowl set on their face. The woman was tall and strict looking, bone thin with her hair in a tight plat that reached just passed her rib cage where it rested over her shoulder.
“I’m sorry we’re late Miss… A group of Seventh years cornered me, asking about my transformation and such in the corridor… I couldn’t get away from them, and Draco found me there. He told them to leave, and they did…” Harry explained feebly, looking nervous. She hated being told off… And she certainly didn’t want a detention so soon into the school year.
“Take your seats at the back of the class, I will talk to you both after lesson…” The prim looking woman fumed, looking a little derailed but disbelieving too. The two late students nodded, moving to the only free seats in the room, side by side at a table in the back of the class.
Harry noticed Hermione and Ron staring at her, trying to catch her eye, but ignored them in favour of nodding her thanks to Draco when he pulled her chair out for her. The raven haired girl was feeling quite…
Unsteady.
-
Harry couldn’t concentrate at all during the lesson, just staring blankly at her text book as the teacher rambled on about some Goblin revolution. She couldn’t care less about class right now, quite alarmed, and ashamed, by the events before lesson. Why hadn’t she defended herself? She’d lived her whole life looking after herself, and all of a sudden she needed Draco Malfoy to be her hero?
It wasn’t right. She’d been so rattled. She didn’t feel like herself right now, she hadn’t known how to react… It wasn’t a scenario she was used to. She couldn’t say she’d ever been approached by guys that way before. She blanched at the thought of what those Ravenclaws had wanted from her.
“…are you alright?” Draco fussed quietly, and Harry turned to notice him watching her. She hadn’t been paying much attention to him, so hadn’t noticed him watching her the entire lesson.
“I’m fine… I don’t need your help.” Harry groused, staring hard at the blonde and daring him to deny her that. The Slytherin grimaced but said nothing, not liking the way Harry couldn’t admit how bothered she was.
“…I’m not trying to undermine you Harry. I’m genuinely concerned.” He asserted firmly, soft grey eyes meeting the green ones of the girl beside him. The raven haired girl faltered at the sincerity of the boy beside her, grimacing to herself.
“…Yes, I know… I’m fine. Just a little… Shocked.” She admitted reluctantly, turning her eyes back to her book.
“I’m afraid that’s probably not the last time that’ll happen… Guys want the girl-that-lived. Girls wanted you when you were famous in sixth year, girls just aren’t as aggressive…” Draco confessed, a little ashamed of his gender. “You’ll get a lot of attention, because you’re a very beautiful girl.”
Harry blinked hard, shocked by that statement. “You think so?” She verified, raising her eyes to his again, and noting how his cheeks went a little pink.
“Any bloke with eyes thinks so, Harry.” The blonde mumbled, averting his eyes, clearly embarrassed.
“If you say so…” Harry muttered to herself, deeply confused, and strangely flattered.
What did she care what a Malfoy thought…? Yeah, she guessed he was attractive, if you were a girl. But she wasn’t… Not at heart anyway. And she couldn’t be in a relationship with a guy, that’d be weird.
Technically it would make her gay, right? She wasn’t exactly attracted to women anymore, not with all these complex emotions and bizarre bodies, but she couldn’t like a bloke… That wasn’t right.
-
“Now, would you two care to explain what happened that made you so late to my lesson?” Professor Rohm asked in her crisp German accent.
Harry looked away slightly, staring at her hands as she wrung her wrists in embarrassment. “Some Ravenclaws accosted Miss Potter on her way to lesson, Professor… I was just coming back from the bathroom when I found a group of them blocking the way in an attempt to corner her. She told them to leave her alone, but they would not. One of them tried to hit her, but I pushed him back. Once he noticed my presence, he and his friends left.” Draco told her honestly, understanding Harry’s reluctance. She thought it was shameful, but it wasn’t her fault.
Professor Rohm frowned, looking unsettled. She turned to regard the young girl before her, eyes betraying the worry she felt. “Is this true Miss Potter?” She inquired softly, watching Harry closely.
Harry grimaced but nodded, refusing to meet her eyes. “Yes, Professor… They were seventh years. They followed me from the Great Hall. I’d stayed longer than the others to get food. I spent most of lunch helping my friend with his pet project, so was a little late leaving after I had eaten… They cornered me in one of the corridors leading here.” She explained weakly, scratching her head sheepishly.
Professor Rohm nodded, looking unhappy. “Did you know any of them?” She asked.
“I recognised Matthew Irons, Professor. I had to report him once when I was a prefect… He wasn’t the one who tried to hit Harry, but he was there.” Draco said when Harry shook her head, surprising the girl. She hadn’t recognised any of them at all… But she didn’t know many lower year Ravenclaws, besides Luna.
“Matthew Irons… Alright. I will inquire about this for you, I don’t want them going around bothering fellow students needlessly.” Rohm insisted, making Harry grimace further.
“That’s not necessary-” She insisted, only for Draco and their teacher to scowl back at her.
“Yes, it is. Even if you aren’t worried about reporting them, we need to make sure they don’t do this again.” Professor Rohm declared firmly, the blonde Slytherin nodding in agreement. The Professor pulled out a bit of parchment and wrote an excuse for the two being late to their next lesson, handing it to Draco.
“I’ve written there why you are late, you best get to your next lesson now though.” She told the two of them, dismissing them. The two students left the room, walking towards where they would be having double Charms.
“…why did you say I’m attractive?” Harry breathed as they walked, turning to look at the young man beside her.
“I said you were beautiful, not attractive. And because I have eyes, Harry.” Draco sneered a little, but with no real malice in his voice. Harry rolled her eyes a little at his attitude, folding her arms across her chest as they walked. He was trying to throw up a mask of disinterest, but it wasn’t very convincing.
“…right…” Harry mused to herself, spending the rest of the journey walking in complete silence. They entered the classroom five minutes later, and the raven haired girl grimaced a little at the stares they received. She muttered an apology as Draco handed over their note, sighing deeply when she saw that yet again, there were only two seats left… At one table near the front of the class. She’d be sitting with the blonde again.
That was now three lessons she had to work with him for. Yes, she was being civil with him, but that didn’t mean they’d be best friends. Even if he did think she was good looking. She felt similarly about him. Not that she’d admit that to herself, or anyone else.
“Right~! Well, as I was saying, there’s not an awful lot we’ve got left to teach you! But, this term I will be hoping to teach you all a spell called ‘Waddiwasi’ which is used to shoot normal objects at targets…” Flitwick continued as Harry and Draco sat down, the two teenager removing their books, parchment and quills for the lesson. “Has anyone ever seen this spell in use?” The tiny Professor asked the group, grinning when a few students raised their hands. “Neville?” He prompted, watching the boy closely.
“Professor Lupin used it to shoot gum at Peeves once on a way to a lesson with our class.” The boy hummed, a finger gently stroking the head of the baby bird sat in its nest on his desk.
“Oh really? Bless that man, he was incredible…” The teacher chuckled, eyes glazing over sadly for a moment. The Professor stayed quiet for a little while, before clearing his throat. “Anyway! By the end of this term, I want you all to be able to hit a small target from across a room with an object of your choosing. Today we will study the theory, and I will give a demonstration.” He elaborated, voice somewhat more subdued.
Harry seemed to deflate a little beside Draco, and the blonde threw him a worried look. “…you were close to him, weren’t you?” He murmured, titling his page with the name of the spell as Flitwick wrote it (and a page number) on the blackboard.
“Yes. He was one of my parents’ best friends, and I am the godfather of his child…” Harry explained slightly unwillingly, reluctant to discuss the matter.
“You are…? That’s my cousin’s son, right…?” He asked, turning his book to the recommended page. The Gryffindor girl nodded, but did not elaborate, instead pulling a small moving picture from her bag. She handed the picture to Draco, who smiled a little.
The picture showed Harry with a bubbly little boy (that looked younger than a year in age) sat in her crossed legs, waving one chubby hand at the camera whilst the other clenched itself tightly in Harry’s baggy grey shirt. It must have been a picture from when Harry had only very recently become female, as she was still wearing men’s clothes, which she no longer did (in public at least). The child had a shockingly bright pair of emerald eyes, and deep black hair… Like Harry.
“He looks like you…” Draco pointed out, brow furrowing it confusion. He did not remember the boy’s father or mother looking the way this child did.
“He’s a metamorphmagus… He does it on purpose. I help his grandmother raise him.” Harry hummed in a soft, unbelievably kind voice. It was obvious she was very fond of the baby. “Andromeda moved close to the Weasleys so that I can see him whenever I want, even though I’m staying with them. She comes for meals with us often, so I spent a lot of time with him over the summer… He’s a great little thing. I thought it’d be weird, but I got used to him being around very quickly… He’s like the younger sibling I never got to have when I was a kid.”
Draco smiled warmly at Harry, passing back the photo. It moved him a little how dedicated the girl was. He’d never known family like that himself. His father was a man to be respected… The only member of his family that genuinely loved him was his mother. She’d spoilt him rotten because of it, and thus taken part in the ruining of him. It wasn’t her fault, she’d meant well. His main corruption was the fault of his father, filling his head with the rubbish he believed in.
“Andromeda actually managed to find Remus’ father, not too long ago… She contacted him and got him to come meet us. We had to tell him that his son was dead… And had left him a grandson. He was grief stricken, as one can expect, but he visits sometimes, he likes seeing Teddy… He’s all he has left now, a childless widow.” The girl beside him sighed, snapping him back to the conversation.
“Lyall Lupin?” The blonde asked, shocking Harry.
“You know of him?” She queried, chewing her thumb nail as she took notes with one hand.
“Yes… My father met him a few times. He disapproved of him for marrying a muggle, and mocked him for going against Voldemort by working with the ministry. He once insulted werewolves to Fenrir, causing the attack on his son. My father thought this to be amusing.” Draco sniffed pointedly, sounding very distinctly disgusted by the fact. Harry hissed a little at that statement, wrinkling her nose unhappily.
“Love is love, love is not blood supremacy… I never understood how you Malfoys could believe being pure blooded was all that was important in marriage. Surely love means more?” Harry huffed, shocking himself and the Malfoy a little with his conviction.
Maybe he had learned from Dumbledore after all.
“…don’t group me with my family. I was raised to those beliefs, but that doesn’t mean I follow them now I am old enough to think for myself.” Draco pressed unhappily, shooting a pointed glare at the stunning girl beside him. She smiled sheepishly, shrugging.
“…sorry. I know you’ve changed somewhat… I shouldn’t assume you’re a completely bigoted twat.” Harry giggled a little, making him smile back at her amusing choice of words.
“…completely? So I am in some way still a bigoted twat, as you so elegantly phrased it?” He laughed back, rolling his eyes when she nodded without hesitation.
“Yes.” She quipped playfully, making him shake his head in bemusement.
Typical Gryffindor…
Author's Notes: An introduction to two of the new teachers and an insight into how Draco has changed since the war! :)
I like this chapter, it shows some progress between Harry and Draco (who if you hadn't guessed are going to be the main ship in this story), and illustrates how the road isn't going to be smooth for them just because Harry is a girl now.
Thank you for reading!!! As always, reviews are welcome positive or otherwise, and if you have any questions for me please send them via a review and I will answer them as soon as I can :)
