I tucked my wand into my tied up hair, sighing heavily as I bound down the stairs.
I bounced into the kitchen, smiling a little when I saw Remus dishing up two large bowls and one baby bowl of soup. The soup was pale in colour, but it smelt delicious. I inhaled deeply.
“Chicken, potato and black pepper?” I guessed as I sat down beside Harry, who was being very quiet. The little boy had his hands planted on his high chair tray and was staring at them unhappily.
“Yeah, hope it doesn’t taste too bad. I’m only used to cooking for myself, and I’m used to eating almost anything nowadays.” The brunette admitted, putting the bowls on the table. “Do you want to feed Harry or shall I?” He asked, waving his wand and casting a small cooling charm on the baby bowl. Harry couldn’t eat anything too hot. I noticed his soup looked thicker than ours, but I spotted a blender next to the sink and realised Remus must have puréed Harry’s so that it was easier to feed him.
“I’ll do it, you get yourself fed. Thanks for this.” I insisted, taking the plastic spoon and bowl before trying to coax Harry into eating. He pouted at me, his tiny face a heart breaking mask of confusion. “Harry, you need food… I know I’m not Lily, and that you’re very confused as to where your mummy and daddy are but they aren’t here.” I told him stiffly, trying to keep my voice level as I offered him the spoonful of soup again. “This isn’t the first time I’ve looked after you for mummy and daddy, you didn’t mind last time.”
“That was likely because he can tell when you’re in a bad mood Sirius… Babies pick up on that sort of thing. Not to mention he was there when his parents died. Yes, it’s unlikely he knew exactly what was happening, but he knows something is wrong.” Remus offered, popping a spoonful of soup into his own mouth.
“I can’t just pretend to be okay, Remus.” I snapped back a little, irritated by him saying that my mood was what was upsetting Harry. Remus recoiled a little, and Harry began to grizzle on cue, his little face screwed up unhappily. “Oh for fuck’s sake.” I snarled under my breath, putting the spoon back down inside the tiny bowl.
“Sirius, I know you can’t pretend to be okay, I’m just explaining why Harry is being difficult… He’ll get better as we do.” Remus concluded, reaching across the table and put his hand on the one I hadn’t realised I had clenched. He squeezed my fist and I sighed, feeling awful for snapping at him and Harry.
“I just… Remus… He was my best friend.” I practically whined, raising the hand he wasn’t holding to card through my hair, knocking most of it out of my pony tail. My breath caught in my throat and I scowled hard at myself as a weak tremble rocked me. “My best friend… And his wife… Are dead.” I whispered, gritting my teeth and exhaling hard.
“Lily and James were my best friends too, Sirius. Unfortunately you’re stuck with me now, you’ll have to get used to that. Now, eat your soup. I’ll sort Harry.” Remus replied stiffly, his voice a little gruff as he cleared his throat and picked up the baby spoon. I opened my mouth to rebuke that being stuck with Remus wouldn’t be all bad but closed it again without saying a word. I was upset and I knew I wouldn’t sound genuine. I’d rather not say anything than have Remus think I was lying for his sake. I wolfed down my soup, not realising until now exactly how hungry I was, my stomach actually reacting in discomfort to the sheer amount of food I was putting in it. I glanced up at Harry as I ate, confused as to how Remus was so much better with him than I was. The tiny boy still looked upset, but he was eating every spoonful Remus offered him, whilst watching me through his unkempt fringe.
“Any news from Dumbledore whilst I was sorting mine and Harry’s room?” I asked quietly once I had finished my meal, watching the brunette opposite me as he ate his own soup. Harry had eaten almost his entire bowl before refusing any more.
“None, I did get an owl from the Weasley’s though. Molly said she’s going to ask Albus if she’s allowed to visit us and bring us some baby essentials. She knits a lot, so she said she’d make Harry some warm clothes and talk us through what we should and shouldn’t feed him…” Remus confessed, not looking up as he spoke, his eyes on his soup. He was probably still upset about my outburst.
“We don’t need someone to tell us how to raise my child.” I huffed a little, scowling and reaching over when Harry made grabby hands at me and letting him clutch at my fingers.
“Your child, Sirius?” Remus asked, sounding surprised and a little reproachful.
“Legally he is my child. I’m not going to tell him I’m his dad or anything like that Remus, I’ll tell him about Lily and James as he grows up, but I’m his guardian now. He’s my responsibility.” I pointed out, raising my eyes to stare at him. The brown haired man shrugged, looking away.
“Your child or not, I don’t know enough about babies and she could teach you something new. She’s on her… Seventh child. She’ll know more than you do. She had a little girl a few months back and she was six sons so she could have some helpful advice.” The werewolf blew off, standing and taking all our bowls to the sink.
“I’ll wash those, go check out the spare room. It’s basic, but I think it’ll do and I’ll move it all out when we leave if you want…” I ordered, waving him away and retrieving my wand. Remus left, picking up Harry as he went and leaving me alone to do the dishes.
-
I didn’t know how long it’d been since Lily and James had died. Looking after Harry was a full time job, and I only realised quite some time had passed when Dumbledore turned up on the doorstep quite out of the blue.
“Sirius!” He crowed, patting me on the back as he walked straight passed me into the cottage. He was carrying a sturdy looking box.
“Albus- uh… We weren’t expecting you.” I admitted, glancing around at how messy the cottage was. Remus would be disgusted if he were home, but he’d gone out food shopping with some money I had given him. I’d trashed the front room looking for something and would have to set everything right before the brunette got back. “To what do we owe the pleasure?” I asked, slipping my wand back into my pony tail, having only taken it out in case the person at the door had been a threat.
Dumbledore ambled into the kitchen with me in pursuit, placing the wooden box on the table and smiling brightly at Harry, who was sat in his now permanent high chair.
I’d been half way through giving him his after lunch snack, which today was a cut up banana.
“I came to drop by the extra Wolfsbane potion I had brewed for Remus. Is he in?” Albus informed me, sitting himself down in the chair closest to Harry. The black haired baby offered him a mostly gummy smile, having calmed down considerably now he was more used to spending time with me and Remus.
“No, he’s food shopping but he shouldn’t be much longer. I should have realised, the full moon is in three days, right?” I groaned, putting the kettle on the stove. “Tea?”
“I would love some, and two days actually.” The old man corrected, picking up a slice of banana and holding it out to Harry. It seemed like such a pedestrian thing for the man to do.
“Shit, two days? I’m surprised he hasn’t mentioned it…” I groused, frowning a little to myself. I felt anger flare up in my chest when I thought about it some more. “He should have mentioned it.” I snapped a little to myself, getting out two cups and some tea bags. Albus raised an eyebrow at me, watching me as Harry gummed on the banana slice in his hand.
“He’s been talking to me about it, it’s not like he forgot Sirius. It’s likely that he didn’t want to bother you.” My former headmaster insisted, picking up another slither of banana when Harry was done with the previous one. I sighed, putting the kettle on the table with the two cups, tea bags, a carton of cream and a bowl of sugar cubes.
“I’m living under his roof with a young child, he should consult me about these things.” I agonised, handing Albus a napkin to wipe his hands. The man cleaned his fingers one by one after prompting Harry to pick up the banana himself and nodded thanks to me when I poured some water in his cup.
“I wouldn’t take it as an insult if I were you, you’ve both been incredibly stressed recently.” Dumbledore advertised, making me sneer.
“You think I don’t know…? We get accosted in the street. I get it more than Remus, but people approach us in public and pat us on the shoulders, celebrating what happened. Why does no one remember Lily and James? No one is thinking about the casualties, heralding little Harry for saving them all when it was Lily and James’ sacrifices that saved Harry and thus killed Voldemort.” I protested, gritting my teeth and exhaling hard. Harry turned to look at me, tilting his head in confusion and pouting, his face covered in mushed up banana. He’d even gotten it in his hair. I breathed in deeply to calm myself, thinking about every time Remus had told me that my mood dictated Harry’s. We’d noticed Harry got more upset if I was upset than if Remus was.
“People haven’t forgotten James or Lily, Sirius. They’re just excited about the boy who lived. You haven’t been taking him out, have you?”
“No, of course not! It’d be dangerous. Remus and I take it in turns to go out, so one of us is always home with him.” I huffed, looking insulted that he could even consider the idea that we were that stupid. “People know we have him though, and even the people who don’t know he’s in our care know we’re close to the situation.”
“A memorial statue has been erected in Godric’s Hollow, for James and Lily. The Ministry have also acquired the rights to the ruins of the house and are preserving it as a historical monument.” Dumbledore informed me, stirring a spoonful of sugar into his hot beverage. He had put an absurd amount of sugar in his drink, but I knew from meetings with the Order that Albus had a sweet tooth so I wasn’t surprised.
“Really…? Well I guess that’s… Nice.” I allowed, wrinkling my nose a little. It seemed distasteful to me, but I knew they meant well. What had happened that night was a big deal. Harry was the first person to ever survive the killing curse and he had (in the eyes of the Wizarding population) destroyed Voldemort at the age of one.
“It is… The Minister told me he wants to publically award Harry a ‘Service to the Magical Community’ medal, but I told him that was taking things too far. He’s a baby, he doesn’t need the stress or any more publicity.” The wizened old man told me, making me sigh and taking a long sip of the cup of tea I had prepared myself.
“That hot kettle best not be on my table without a coaster, Sirius.” Remus chastised as he entered the room, arms laden with shopping.
“Wehhhhhhm…!” Harry called, seemingly in greeting, making Albus smile widely as the tot waved clumsily at Remus.
“He is a sweet thing, how is he doing?” He asked, lifting the kettle up when Remus came over to put a coaster under it.
“He’s doing okay. The first few days he cried often, but he seems to be adjusting…” The brunette explained, beginning to put the food he had bought away in various cupboards. “He cried so hard he made himself sick the first day. I wish he were old enough to understand… It makes me feel so helpless knowing I can’t explain what’s happening to him.” He sighed softly, turning to glance at Harry. “Merlin’s beard, Sirius… Did you not put a bib on him??? He’s going to need another bath now!” He groaned, waving briefly at Harry, who was still waving his hands about for attention.
“Wehms…!” The dark haired boy cried more shrilly, pouting.
“Is he trying to say Remus?” Dumbledore queried, his voice amused. I nodded, smiling a little. I ignored Remus’ complaints, not in the mood for his bitching right now. I was stressed enough.
“Yeah, he always calls Remus ‘Wems’. He’s not any good with Rs yet. Or Us for that matter, he can’t say my name.” I elaborated when Dumbledore raised an eyebrow at me.
“Sometimes Harry imitates the angry way Sirius says my name when he’s annoyed, he probably thinks that the tone of voice is what I respond to.” Remus mused dryly, wetting a flannel in the sink and walking over. He scooped Harry up into one arm and began mopping at his face, smiling when Harry squealed and tried to wriggle free. “He does try Sirius’ name too though. Look,” He insisted, capturing Harry’s eyes with his own. “Sirius.” He enunciated, staring down at the little boy. He repeated my name a few times, and I was about to open my mouth to point out Harry was showing him up when the boy began to babble.
“Ss… Siry.” He crowed, turning and making grabby hands at me, making it obvious who he was referring to.
“Well I’ll be damned…” I muttered quietly to myself, taking Harry when Remus held him out. “How long have you and Remus been working on that?” I asked him, as if he could answer, watching as he stood in my lap and gently tugged on my pony tail.
“Siiiiiryyy…!” He squawked in my ear, smiling gummily at me.
“I talk to him whenever I’m looking after him or playing with him, and he hears me say your name all the time. He’s been trying to copy it for about a week now, probably because neither of us reply to ‘mama’ or ‘dada’.” Remus speculated, shrugging and getting a cup and a teabag for himself now that he had finished putting things away. He poured himself a cup of tea, standing against the kitchen side with it. “I’m guessing you’ve come to drop of my potion, Albus?”
“Yes, enough to finish this month’s dosage and enough for next month too. Apologies for not giving you enough the first time.” Dumbledore apologised, making me frown.
“You’ve already got some Wolfsbane?” I queried, turning to look at Remus as Harry bounced on the balls of his feet in my lap.
“I did have, I popped in on Dumbledore when I went shopping for baby clothes last week but he didn’t give me a full dose. I need one goblet full a day for the week of the full moon, he only gave me five days. Unintentionally of course.” Remus explained, putting his tea down and picking a bottle out of the crate on the table. He poured some potion into a goblet he already had out on the side. The potion gave off a soft blue smoke and I wrinkled me nose.
“I didn’t know that.” I admitted sheepishly, referring to the need for him to take it daily for the week. I’d though you took it on the day and it prevented you going savage when you wolfed out.
“If you’d bothered to ask I’d have told you.” The brunette sniffed pointedly before gulping down the potion and shivering bodily. I tried to think of something to say to defend myself, but really there wasn’t anything I could say as he was right. I’d not asked.
“…what’re you going to do when you… Change, then?” I mumbled, wincing when Harry tugged my hair hard. I untangled his hand from my ponytail and put it on my shirt collar, which he promptly began to tug on.
“Stay in my room. I’ll be conscious of what I’m doing, I’ll probably just try to sleep off the change, I’ve read that’s how most people deal with it. I’ll lock my bedroom door and ward it with magic too though, just in case the potion doesn’t work very well.” He assured me, putting the goblet in the sink before retrieving his tea and sitting between Dumbledore and I.
“I’ll turn for the night, just to make sure you don’t hurt yourself.” I offered sincerely, licking my bottom lip and turning Harry in my lap so that he was stood facing Dumbledore. I kept my hands on his tiny torso in support so that he didn’t fall or try to move away.
Remus visibly startled at my words, imploring silently with his eyes as he shot a pointed stare towards Albus.
“He knows, Remus. I had to tell him so that he could inform the ministry how Peter might evade them.” I disclosed, waving off his concern.
“I shouldn’t be surprised that Remus knows…” Albus chuckled, but Remus still looked pale and scared.
“He… They all became animagi for me. So they could help me with my transformations.” The brunette murmured, scratching his head and sighing. “When’re the Ministry going to take Sirius…?” He asked Dumbledore directly, the tea cup he was holding shaking in his hand.
“Take him…? They’re not going to, Remus. Sirius and I have agreed to tell the Ministry that I am tutoring him in becoming an animagi. I tutored Minerva, and they were fine with it do long as she came to them when she was fully trained and showed them her form so that she could be registered. I have already owled the Ministry with an excuse for not informing them sooner and they’re waiting for Sirius and I to ‘finish’. They don’t know he’s already an animagi. I am impressed however, that he managed to teach himself.” Our former head teacher disclosed, and I smiled slightly as Remus visibly relaxed. He’d looked so scared for me, it had been unnerving.
“It was quite the feat.” Remus admitted, sending me a sheepish smile.
“James and Peter managed it too, it’s not like I did it alone.” I pointed out.
“You were always one of the cleverest in the year. It was your idea to become animagi, and you who assumed you’d be able to communicate with me in my werewolf form as an animal.” The werewolf countered, smiling a little stronger now and nudging my shoulder. I got Harry to sit down on my lap and kept a firm arm around him.
“Out of curiosity, can you two communicate when Remus is in werewolf form?” Albus asked, glancing between the two of us.
“Yes, quite well actually. Even when I’m in full wolf form rather than using potions. I don’t understand him on a human level, but I respect his form. Sirius becomes an almost abnormally large black dog, and my wolf form respects his prowess. It even respected James, and he was a stag. I think it was a size thing, and that James and Sirius were very good at showing my wolf that they weren’t the kind that backed down.” Remus laughed a little, likely thinking back to when we had first started out helping him with his transformations.
“It was a bit of a standoff the first few times. James and I had to get used to standing our ground, even if that meant giving Remus a head butt or a bite now and then.” I agreed, grinning a little at Remus. “His wolf form isn’t as vicious towards other animals as it is people. When he realised we wouldn’t leave him alone he rarely tried his luck. Every now and then James or I would get scratched, but often it was because we were stopping him leaving the shrieking shack and he didn’t like being restricted.” I added, pulling my shirt collar down slightly to reveal a pale scar dipping from my left shoulder blade downwards.
“Incredible… You should start documenting this when you’re a legal animagi, it’d be interesting headway in understanding werewolves.” Dumbledore mused, smiling over the rim of his cup and he took a sip of his tea.
Author's Notes: Sorry if this chapter seems a little slow, the next one should be more exciting, as it will cover Remus' first transformation since he took in Sirius and Harry.Thank you for reading, please feel free to rate and review :)
