Chapter 3
Looking around at everything in the parlor near the entrance hall of the house, Harry felt a flutter in his stomach. He was nervous, all there was to it. However, he was happy. Very happy. This had been the greatest week of his entire life. He was with Sirius, someone that was repeatedly proving that he cared about him and what was right.
They were still getting to know each other, of course, but it was moving in the right direction. What he was learning was that his godfather wasn't like most adults he knew. Oh, he could be serious when he had to, that was proven when they dealt with the mass of paperwork for Gringotts and him explaining so much then taking care of it, but they had fun as well. A lot of it. Sirius had made sure of that, doing things like playing Quidditch with him, mucking about, teaching him joke spells, all that. And Sirius was really the first person to ask him what he wanted to do. When it came to others, like his friends, that wasn't ever asked. They either just went with the flow or he followed what they wanted.Looking down at his wand, which he was clutching tightly in his nervousness over what was coming after dark fell, he smiled. He could now do magic whenever he wanted. That first day here Sirius had broken the Trace on him so there was no way for him to get cited for underage use of magic or allow anyone to use it to trace where he was. Sirius had told him that when they got out of the jurisdiction of the British Ministry of Magic, it would have been useless anyway, but he didn't want to take chances before then. It had been easy, too. Sirius had cast a spell on him then his wand before having him cast one himself. The spell he cast had made something that looked like ice form around him and the wand, what Sirius told him was a manifestation of the Trace itself, then it cracked and fell to the ground before dissolving. Great! It had worked, too, as he had been doing all sorts of spells since then to help out. That he loved. Somehow, that felt like a freedom he hadn't had before and like a weight was lifted off him. Wonderful!Since that first day here, so much had happened. The first afternoon and night was settling in then going over all kinds of bits dealing with what felt like every part of his life. That was Sirius trying to understand what was going on, so Harry had given it up easily. The more he talked and Sirius asked questions, the more it shored up that they were both sure that Hermione was correct in that there was plenty wrong. They also had to deal with a ton of paperwork. To him it seemed like the more that they signed from Gringotts, the more appeared that they had to deal with. Though he had been concerned about that, worried about a 'paper trail', as Muggle crime shows called it, Sirius assured him that it was normal and no one could trace them with it. That eased his mind. Sirius also walked him through everything he was doing so he understood the basics. His godfather told him this was so he not only understood what it was, but to show him that he wasn't doing anything 'off'. At first, Harry hadn't understood that, but he did now. Sirius wanted to work on the trust and show him that he wasn't doing anything wonky. That he appreciated more than Sirius knew, especially with the growing realization that there was plenty shady and wrong with all that had gone on. This helped and, as Sirius pointed out, there was plenty there that he had to know about. As Sirius had told him, he had a lot of properties and vaults, something he sure didn't know. While Sirius hadn't wanted to dig too much into the mess to see if he couldn't figure out just what was going on, they found enough. One of the things they learned was that one of the vaults that had been set aside was to pay for his upkeep by the person that took him in if the worst happened to his parents. From the accounting of it they got, they found out it hadn't ever been touched. Which meant his aunt and uncle hadn't ever received what they should have. He doubted that would have changed their view on anything to do with him, but it didn't seem right either. They also had gotten copies of his parents wills. As expected, he was supposed to have gone to Remus, not his aunt. Which meant Dumbledore had ignored the wills completely, as had Remus. That he didn't like and it seemed quite wrong. Then there were a myriad of smaller issues, such as him never knowing about the properties and vaults. From what they saw of the paperwork, he was supposed to have been told about that when he went to Gringotts the first time. That was something else that didn't sit well with either of them. After that was the fact that most of the paperwork required for him, such as his assets, birth certificate and other bits his aunt and uncle would have needed, didn't go to them. Those bits were still with the goblins, the executors of such areas because of the ties to the vaults. That information alone had both of them wondering just how his aunt and uncle had managed to get him into school and other things. Sirius was of the opinion that Dumbledore had something to do with it. As they really couldn't dig too much right now, they left it alone, planning to figure it out when they could manage.Once that was taken care of, the next day they had done just what Sirius said; gone out to get him everything he needed. And that, more than anything, had blindsided Harry. He assumed, what with how his life had been like up to that point, that it would just be a couple of outfits and the necessities. Boy, had he been wrong!Sirius had bought him a whole new wardrobe, a huge one, of everything he could ever need. And it was the really nice stuff, too. Designer clothes like what Dudley wore. His godfather hadn't bothered to look at the prices of anything. If he had looked at it or said he liked it, he had gotten it, in plenty of colors. In fact, he had gotten so many clothes, they had to buy bags so they could take them with them. Because he had been so blindsided by it, he had protested getting so much. Sirius had shushed him and told him he wanted to do it. After the clothes, he had gotten new glasses. That had been great and he found he could actually see better as his old prescription wasn't the right one. While there, they had also picked up some colored contacts. Those were nonprescription, but they could use them as his eyes were a telling color for anyone that knew him. Since they got several colors, it would help throw people off. Sirius told him once they settled in Russia, they would get the magical kind that would randomly shift colors or he could choose one. That was great.Once they were done with all that, they had stopped at a Muggle theatrical supply house. What Sirius had done was pick up some of the makeup they used on stage. They were going to use that to cover his scar until they could figure out what to do about it as glamours would only work for so long. It had taken some time, and plenty of laughs, when they got home that night to get it right as neither of them had ever applied makeup of any kind.Since then, they had just worked on getting ready to go. Mostly that was waiting on paperwork and filling it out so their properties were locked down, they had the access they needed to their money and something like Muggle credit cards they could use anywhere outside the UK, in both Muggle areas and Magical. While they waited and tended to that, they readied everything. That consisted of charming their bags so they could hold all their stuff and wouldn't be too heavy for Buckbeak to carry. They also planned how they were going to do this. While it was a hard choice, they decided to go to Russia via Europe. Rather than take a straight shot across the continent, something that would probably be faster, they were going to start on a more northern route then come down that way. Tonight they were going to fly to Norway. After that they were going to cross over to Sweden then head to Finland before going into Russia. Along the way, they were going to stop and see plenty of places neither of them had been to before. They were actually going to spend some time in Sweden, probably a week, so they could get IDs, something they didn't have. Sirius said he knew somewhere they could get those and the papers they would need. While there, they were going to leave Buckbeak. From what he said, there was a reserve there that would take him. It was somewhere he would be happy as well since there were plenty of his own kind on it. From there, they would take magical means to travel, something that would be faster for them. With all they had in place, no one would recognize either of them. As long as they stayed safe and were together, that was fine with Harry and he didn't care.Once in Russia, from what Harry was told, they would shore up everything then work on getting what they needed to fully settle in Chile. Sirius said he would get them permanent paperwork, IDs and everything else that would prove they were Russian, not British. There were other bits as well, about the accounts and that, but Sirius assured him everything would be fine. By the end of summer they would leave Russia for the US. They still weren't sure about spending time there, but planned to be in Chile by October at the latest. So, they had a lot to work on.At the moment, he was waiting for Sirius to finish up checking on something so they could go take care of the last of what they needed to do before leaving. As this was the trickiest, it had been saved for last. They were going to the house Sirius grew up in to grab some personal items his godfather wanted. As it was the property that everyone knew about, he wanted to wait until the very last to take care of this, hoping that if anyone did suspect him, that they would have already check there, though they couldn't get in, and started looking elsewhere.Glancing up when he heard footsteps, he nodded when he saw Sirius coming, hooking a bag over his shoulder. “Are we ready?” He asked, assuming they were.“Ready.” Sirius assured him. “This will hold everything. There's not much there to grab, but I want it.” He had already explained to his godson that it was personal items, like letters and pictures of his parents he wanted to take with him. “We should be in and out in under an hour. The elves are going with us, so they can find the papers I need and some other bits I want them to take care of while we get everything out of my room.”“Isn't there an elf there?” Harry asked, brow furrowed. From the way Sirius talked, all his houses had elves.Snorting, Sirius told him, tone dry, “There's one there and I wouldn't trust him to help with anything but causing problems. He was plenty barmy before I went to Azkaban. I'm sure he's worse now as he's been alone since my mother died. I won't chance anything with him. In fact, the elves are going to take him with them and send him to another of the houses. There won't be anything he can do about it, either. I'm thinking he's going to the one in Ireland. That will keep him plenty busy as it's huge with a couple of dozen elves to watch over him to make sure he doesn't cause problems.”Face taking on a serious look, he said, voice quiet, “I got a letter from Remus about you vanishing.” Seeing a worried look on Harry's face, he soothed, “Its fine, nothing to worry about. It went to that central box we talked about, the one I set up to get mail, so he has no idea where I am. All he knows is that's the way to contact me. Nothing can be traced through it.” Seeing Harry give a relieved nod, he continued, “He and Albus want me to keep an eye out for you. The theory with them seems to be that they think you ran off to find me. Well, one of them. The way he worded it and what's been in the Prophet the last few days leans towards everyone thinking that someone did something to you and you're either dead or being held hostage somewhere. I'll wait until after we leave Finland to answer him. By the time he gets it, we'll be in Russia. With how that country is, we'll be plenty safe and no one can do anything to find us. That's what we need.”“Good,” Harry nodded. He knew about what was in the Prophet, of course. They had gotten a subscription to that the day after they arrived so they could keep up on the news. So, it didn't stun him. “Nothing else off in it? The Prophet doesn't seem to lean towards it being you that did anything, but you never know.”“From what he said, Albus, and everyone, else doesn't think so. You were seen by enough, including Fudge, that no one thinks it's me. They're still looking for me, of course, but that's something we expected. From what he said, they're sure it has nothing to do with my end, that it's either you having taken off, though they don't have a clue how you might have done it, or someone that has it out for you. It's what we need.”“We do,” Harry told him, relieved.Clapping his godson on the back, Sirius told him, “Nothing to worry about. It's handled. I'll manage to keep him off track and make noises like I want to come back to help look for you. That should throw them off. At least I hope so. We'll deal accordingly and make sure there are plenty of clues about you tossed out over the years. I won't figure into it either, so they won't know I'm involved. Don't worry, we'll both be safe.” Seeing Harry nod, he said, “We need to get on this. I want to leave right after full dark. So, we need to get it done and make damned sure that we're ready. Like I told you; be prepared for this to be disgusting. I'm sure it's plenty bad.”“I am,” Harry assured him. “I'll make sure to keep watch out the windows while you take care of this.”“Good. Once the elves get it locked down, we won't have to worry. I just don't want blindsided. While I'm damned sure no one can get in, I want to be careful so we don't tip anyone off.” Seeing Harry nod again, Sirius called the elves. The two elves would take them there, as they could get through the wards, so they didn't have to expose themselves in the park across the street and walk over. The less risk of being seen, the better.Having the elves each take one of them, they were then whisked away to Grimmauld Place.
Standing in the backyard after full dark, Harry looked up at the clear sky and smiled. They were really leaving. Sirius was packing everything into the saddlebags on Buckbeak while running through orders to the elves. Shivering from nerves, Harry pulled the coat he was wearing tighter around him, though it was a warm night. Both of them were wearing one as they would be flying, and up as high as Buckbeak could manage so they weren't seen. From what Sirius told him, they were going to head out to the channel first then go north from there. That way there was a smaller chance of being spotted. If they calculated it correctly, they would be in Norway shortly after dawn. Sirius, from what he said, already had somewhere for them to stay. One of the things they had ordered through a place down Knockturn Alley was Polyjuice Potion. Until they got settled in Russia, they were going to have to use that to throw everyone off. He said that they could easily get it, of course, and it would only be for times when they were out among large groups of people. The rest they would use glamours and other bits for.
When Sirius finally said his name, Harry looked at him, gut fluttering. It was time. Unable to help himself, he grinned. This was—oh, it was great!Smiling at his grinning godson, chuckling a bit at that look, Sirius motioned him to come closer. “I'm going to get you up on Buckbeak and cast a sticking charm so you don't get tossed off. Once I get on, I'm going to Disillusion the three of us. I'm sure no one will notice us, as high as Buckbeak can fly, but better safe than sorry on that bit.”When Harry stepped up next to him, he helped his godson onto the hippogriff's back. Making sure to cast a warming charm on the jacket Harry was wearing, he then put the sticking charm on him. Though he was sure that Harry could hang on just fine, this way his godson could doze while they flew without fear of falling off. He planned to do the same for himself as it was going to end up a long flight. Once he was sure Harry was fine, he hoisted himself onto the hippogriff's back, before sticking himself as well. Disillusioning all three of them, he then pointed out the small bag in front of Harry that had some drinks and snacks in it, which was hanging off the horn of the saddle he had on Buckbeak. “Since we're not stopping for anything, I had the elves pack that. There is also something if we have to use the loo. It won't be comfortable to manage that this way, but we're not stopping for potty breaks.” Seeing Harry nod, still grinning, Sirius slipped an arm around him then took the reins of the crude halter on the hippogriff. “Ready, Harry?” He asked, grinning himself and giving his godson a gentle squeeze.“You bet!” Harry told him with a laugh.“We're out of here, then,” Sirius said, coaxing Buckbeak to take off. Laughing as the hippogriff soared upwards then took a hook in the direction Sirius had talked to him about, Sirius gave Harry another squeeze. They were finally on their way to a new life. He was sure that neither of them were going to miss the old one much. It would be a long time, if ever, before they came back, but a new adventure was in the offing and he planned to make sure that the both of them would enjoy it to the utmost.
Walking up to her room, Hermione flipped through the mail. The Muggle post had just come, so she had a couple of book catalogs to browse through, hoping she could order something and get it before she left for the rest of the summer. She had also picked up the Magical mail from the small box attached to the back of the house where the neighbors wouldn't notice it, or the owls that dropped whatever she got in it.
There were more catalogs there plus that day's copy of the Prophet and something from Ron. The one from Ron she knew what it was about. It was making plans for her to go to the Burrow in a couple of weeks. His dad had tickets for the Quidditch World Cup and had invited her. Once there, she would stay for the rest of the summer then go to Hogwarts with them. That was something she was looking forward to. It just meant she would have to show the letter to her parents when they got home so they could all work out the details.Shutting the door to her room after stepping inside, she was skimming the front page of the Prophet for any new news on Harry. Though there was a small article there, it wasn't the headline it had been only a week or so ago. As they hadn't found any clues about what happened, the story was dying down. Part of her didn't like that and thought her friend vanishing should warrant more concern, but the logical side knew that this was for the best. Let it die down. That would keep Harry and Sirius safer.Tossing the Magical version of mail onto the nightstand, Hermione then flopped on the bed. Smiling, she began leafing through one of the book catalogs to see what was new. As she was the frugal sort, she didn't spend much of her allowance, thus having plenty to devote to her passion of reading over the summer months. She planned to divide up what she had saved between regular Muggle books and their Magical counterparts. It also meant that she had to quickly decide which Muggle ones she wanted so she could get them before she left. As the booksellers she would deal with were in London, she could manage it as long as she decided this week. That was the hard part, though. Which meant that she needed to make her list now so she could decide.Sliding up to the head of the bed, she leaned back against the headboard then grabbed her pad and pen, starting to flip through the first catalog so she could make notes of names and page numbers. Once she had a running list, she would sort it from there.About halfway through the catalog, having taken copious notes about the books that stood out for her, she frowned when a postcard dropped into her lap. That was odd as the Post Office was quite careful about ensuring people's mail didn't get mixed up or lost. Picking it up, seeing a picture of the original Legoland on it, she turned it over, wondering who it could be for. After all, she didn't have many friends in the Muggle world. The ones she did have wouldn't go somewhere like that. Seeing her name on it, her brow furrowed. It was for her. A quick glance at what was written there and she smiled. Now she knew. All it said was 'We're safe and thank you'.Feeling her eyes prickle for the first time since the few days after Harry vanished, she smiled bigger. Running a now trembling finger over the handwriting she knew wasn't Harry's, figuring it was Sirius', she chuckled. “Legoland? Of all the places you two could go, you chose Legoland?” She whispered, but was still smiling. This was good, though.Clutching the postcard to her chest, she kept smiling, though there were a couple of tears from it. Harry was safe and with Sirius. That was wonderful. Shaking her head, she knew she had to get rid of the postcard in case someone saw it and asked questions, but she couldn't yet. She wanted to hold it for a while. It was the confirmation she had hoped to get at some point. “Thank you, Harry,” she whispered, though she knew no one would overhear her. “You two stay safe and I hope to see you again someday.” She added. Soon she would tear it up then flush it, but for now she wanted to hold onto that innocuous looking postcard. That made her feel better and told her all the questioning she had gone through was worth it. Harry was safe with Sirius and she was sure they were having fun. That was all that mattered to her.
