Chapter 3
Looking up at the ramshackle mid-sized Tudor manor house after landing, Sirius petted Buckbeak and sighed. They had just gotten through the wards after a couple hours of flying to get here. He was sure that the time had more to do with Severus taking them all over the place just in case. That was a wise move, so he wasn't going to say much. Shaking his head at what he saw, not to mention the overgrown lawn, he sighed. This looked plenty bad.
Hand on Harry's shoulder, he looked back at Snape, who was locking down the wards and keying them in, as he waited to see what the man wanted to do. When Severus said this was in bad shape, he wasn't lying. He just hoped that there were at least a couple rooms inside that were livable. If not, they would make do. Just so they were out, he rightly didn't give a shite.Gazing up at the manor house, Harry sighed, not sure what to make of this. Severus told them a couple of the rooms were livable, so he was counting on that. Everything else? It didn't matter. All it meant, from what he could see, was they had plenty to keep themselves occupied with because this looked like it was going to take a lot of work to get it in shape. That was fine, too. He didn't care.Finishing the wards then summoning an elf to drop a message in the box at Lupin's cottage, Severus stepped back over to the two. “Get everything off Buckbeak and let him roam. There is plenty for him to eat and one of the wards won't allow him beyond the property boundaries. One of the small garages is cleaned out and open with hay for bedding, so he has shelter. Then we need to get inside. There is plenty we have to tend to, fast.” He said, patting the hippogriff on the hindquarters.Unloading the bags off Buckbeak then handing them to Severus and Harry, Sirius then undid the harness, taking it off. Grinning, he petted his old friend and said, “Go enjoy yourself.” He laughed when the hippogriff immediately took off to explore. From what he could tell, Buckbeak seemed quite happy to be out of that room and back to what life should be for a hippogriff.Smiling just a little as the hippogriff walked around, Severus nodded. Perfect. Not only was the creature once more free, but he would work as excellent protection for the place. He would have Sirius talk with him later to get him to sound off an alarm of some kind if there were people trying to get in or tarrying too close to the wards. Motioning the two to then follow, he made his way towards the door. As the wards on the house were connected with the outer ones, he didn't have to key them in. Taking the knob in his hand, he sighed then said, not looking at them, “I'm warning you now, this is bad. We have a couple rooms that are livable at the moment, the rest isn't. Not only are they in bad shape, there are plenty of pests still in the house, so be cautious.” Hearing them say they would be, he then turned the knob and opened the door, stepping aside and motioning them to enter.Keeping a hand on Harry's shoulder, Sirius guided him in then stopped, looking around. Nose wrinkling, he had to agree with Severus; this was bad. Everything was mouldering, tapestries hanging in rags, dust, dirt, paintings falling apart, carpeting on the stairs ripped and stained. It looked worse than Grimmauld Place when he opened it. Looking over his shoulder, he waited for Snape to guide them as the man knew where they were going.“This is rather disgusting, isn't it?” Harry said, looking around. Grinning, he added, “It's going to look magnificent when we get it cleaned up, though!”“That's the way to look at it,” Severus agreed with a smirk. “The structure itself is sound with the plumbing in great shape. It's just the cleanup we need to concern ourselves with. Nothing more than that. The three of us are more than capable of tending to that with the help of the elves. It's just going to take time, something we now have in abundance.” Stepping up by the two, he put a hand on Harry's shoulder and looked at him. Smirking bigger, he said, “It's time.” Then he waited. Harry would understand what he meant by that and what to say, so he waited.Grinning, Harry looked around then said, “I've finally come home. This is my home, with both of you.” Though he knew he would feel nothing from what he said, the reaction elsewhere was what they needed.Laughing, Sirius said, giving Harry's other shoulder a squeeze, “And I'm sure we just sent someone else off into more of a panic.”“We did,” Severus said smoothly, almost grinning. Patting Harry on the shoulder, he said, “Follow me. I'll lead you to the two rooms we'll be using for now. Keep in mind that it's dangerous until we get there, so stay wary.” Then he swept off to the two rooms that were closest to the kitchen where they would be staying until they could get on the cleaning. Though the worst was over when it came to so much, there was still one important detail they had to attend to before they could settle down for the night. Once the adrenaline rush brought on by getting out wore off, they would all be tired and need rest. Besides, the following day would be busy, for all of them.
After downing more Pepper-Up, Albus smoothed down his beard with a sigh. It was after two in the morning and he was exhausted. So far there were no signs of Harry or Sirius. Now Severus was missing as well. At this juncture, everyone involved was thinking this was a plan of Tom's. Sirius and Harry alone led them there. Then Severus not returning was another clue that had even the DMLE thinking that was the cause. At the moment, he still had an office full of people. DMLE and Order members were gathered, exchanging information, not that it was much. So far there were no clues. The only maybe hint was that there was house elf involvement. That's all any of them could think of for the just vanishing. Whose elves were where the issue came in. There were any number of Pureblood houses that had not only the elves, but were aligned with Tom. As they had no evidence at all who might be involved, the DMLE couldn't just go question people, not that doing such a thing would yield anything anyway.
Groaning as he sat up straight and folded his hands on the desk, he shook his head. This was a nightmare, one he didn't know how to handle. Sitting there, he had a few things he thought people should check into, but couldn't say anything with the DMLE in the room as they involved Sirius. He thought it best to contact Remus when the DMLE finally left to see if he could tend to them while he had others going out to look elsewhere. On top of that, he had to get with a couple of the teachers to shift them around to cover for Severus as both Head of House and Defense until he could find someone to step in. That meant he had to put out feelers for the few he knew that were qualified to take over. As classes started the following day, he didn't have much time to get it in place.Honing in on the conversation when they talked about who might be involved, though he doubted anyone in the DMLE knew more than they did, he was then startled when a couple of his instruments began sounding an alarm. Eyes widening when he realized that the alarm was the one that indicated the Blood Wards had fallen, he stood then hurried over to check. A few spells told him that, indeed, they were gone. Shaking his head, he turned to the rest in the room, who were now all eying him, then sighed, “The wards on Privet Drive are gone. I don't know if that means Harry has died or something else has happened.” Though he could see very concerned looks on the faces of Order members, he focused on Madam Bones when she stepped forward to look at the instruments.“Is there any way to tell what happened?” She asked, looking at the delicate silver devices.“None,” Albus said with a shake of his head. “They just tell me they are there or not.”“Would you like to explain to me just why you feel it's necessary that you monitor those wards, Albus?” She asked, voice tight, looking at the old man. “I don't believe that falls within your purview as your role of Headmaster.”Sighing, Albus said, tiredly, “Someone has to. The DMLE doesn't have the time.”“Those wards and what goes on with Mr. Potter and his family aren't any of your business, Albus,” she said, coldly. “If there is that much danger to Mr. Potter, the DMLE should have been informed so they could take over.”“They don't take this seriously,” Albus told her softly, not wanting to get into this now.“Just how long have you been monitoring those wards?” She asked, deciding that the old man needed looking into as well. She didn't think that he had anything to do with the disappearance itself, but his motives might factor in.“Since Harry was taken in by his aunt,” Albus told her honestly. “I don't see where this is something that will help in the search. Though we do need to do something to put up protections for his family now that the wards are gone. They'll be a target if we don't.”“I'll send Ministry wardmasters over there once we check it out,” Amelia told him, eying all the instruments, wondering, not for the first time since the DMLE got involved, just what Albus was hiding or not telling all of them. She did think that he honestly didn't know where Mr. Potter was or Severus Snape, but she was also equally sure what he did know might help to figure out what happened.Nodding to her, Albus made a mental note to send Order members over when the Ministry was done to beef up whatever wards they put up. They also needed to question the Dursleys, thought he doubted they knew anything. “I think you need to focus on the other side of this mess, Amelia. If anyone had a hand in it, they did.”“We're already planning to,” she told Albus, tone frosty. Then she added, “Unless you have some clue we don't, where to start looking is beyond us. We don't know.” Straightening up to her full height, she then told him, tone decidedly icy this time, “Don't tell me how to do my job, Albus.”“I'm not,” Albus soothed. As it was so late and everyone was tired, tempers were short. He didn't want her angry with him, thus making getting information out of the DMLE harder. “It's just a suggestion, nothing more.”“I'll take it under advisement,” she told him, tone still cold. Shaking her head, she said, “As we're turning up nothing here and those that were around at the time of Harry’s disappearance are in bed, we're going for the night. If we need any more from the students that were there, we'll let you know.” Seeing him nod, she then motioned for her people to follow and left, planning to start assigning people to check out Albus, and what he might be up to.Watching her go, waiting for the revolving stairs to stop, Albus sighed then said, “Unless one of you has a suggestion where else to look, I'm going to send most of you home. Alastor, I need you to get Bill. I'll get in contact with Remus and a couple others I know. Once the Ministry is gone from Privet Drive, I want you to take charge of beefing up what wards they put in place. Tomorrow I'll send a couple others over to see if the Dursleys know anything, something I doubt. Then I'm going to need some help from you and Minerva to start activating the Trace on Harry. That will take time as it has to hone in on his magical signature. It's best we start it now.”“Will do,” Alastor told him with a tired nod. “Let Remus know to meet us at Arabella's. I'll see if she knows anything or saw any suspicious activity.”“Do that.” Albus told him. “I'll send word to her you're coming and tell her that you'll explain when you get there.”“I'll take care of it,” Alastor told him, a determined look on his face.Dismissing everyone else, Albus sat down with a tired groan. Shaking his head, he quickly sent off a message to Remus then one to Arabella. After that, he began summoning books. It was his hope that they could find poor Harry and Severus before the worst happened. He didn't know why the wards fell, but he prayed it wasn't the worst. He would just have to wait and see.
Though tired, Remus was still awake when Albus' message came in. When it did, he smiled. Then he went to check the small box outside his cottage, one that was charmed to look like part of the rain barrel on the side of the house. In it, as he hoped, was a message from Severus telling him they were safe. Perfect! It went according to plan. That made him happy. Though he didn't know where the three were, he knew they managed to get there without a problem. That's all he really needed to know.
Pulling on his robes, he adjusted them, planning to meet Alastor just like Albus wanted. Once they were done there, and he got all the information he could, he would send a message back so the three would know what was going on. The more information they had, the better chance they had at staying safe. That he planned to ensure they received. Because he wanted the three that were being used most for whatever ends to stay safe.
Reading through the spell in the book he was holding, finger running down the page as he did, Severus about jumped out of his robes when he felt his arse being groped. Ignoring Harry's chuckle, he groaned then snapped, “Black! Quite groping me! This is serious and we need to tend to it, not play foolish games.”
“Why stop? You like it,” Sirius chuckled, doing it again. “Besides, this is the first time I've gotten to do it as there are usually too many around for me to try.”Looking up at the ceiling and groaning, Severus huffed, “There'll be time enough for such foolishness later. At the moment, we need to focus on this. That Trace needs gone as fast as we can manage. I'm sure both Albus and the DMLE are getting ready to activate using it by now.”Groping him yet again, Sirius then chuckled at the snarl that elicited before stepping up beside him and looking at the book. “We'll take care of it, don't worry. Keep your boxers out of a bunch. What do we have to do?”Sighing, knowing it was useless to chastise him about it, Severus held out the book. “It's just a simple spell, but we both have to cast it at the same time on him to strip it away. Then he has to cast the other spell to remove the residual. Nothing more. I want this taken care of now as we're all tired and need rest.” They were coming down from the rush of the escape, so exhaustion was creeping in. Though he didn't think that anything could be done to trace Harry this soon, he wanted it broken so they were certain of it as this was the biggest weapon the Ministry and Albus had in their arsenal.Taking the book, Sirius read over what was there and nodded. As he knew other spells in this class, it wouldn't be a problem. Quickly memorizing the spell and wand movement, he handed it back. “Let's get on it then.” After handing the book back, he raised his wand and waited, winking at the grinning Harry as he did.Setting the book aside, Severus leveled his wand at Harry as well. Counting down to three, they then both cast. Concentrating, he held onto the spell while the orange-ish light from both their wands surrounded Harry.Holding still, Harry gritted his teeth as the spell did its thing. This wasn't comfortable, though it didn't hurt. It was like millions of bugs crawling on him, though softly. He could also feel something like them chewing. It wasn't on his skin, but like they were on something around him that made his skin tingle. There was even a crackling noise from them doing it. As seconds ticked by, he could feel that—whatever it was surrounding him feel like it was starting to crack and give way. Then there was a shattering noise as he was surrounded by what felt and looked like a thin layer of glass that immediately broke apart then fell to the floor with no noise, vanishing as it hit.Pleased, Severus lowered his wand and nodded. That was the worst of the procedure. Motioning Harry over, he grabbed the book and flipped to the next page. Holding it out for the young wizard, he quickly ran him through the wand movement and incantation. This would remove the last of it. Seeing Harry nod when he had it down, he kept the book up then said, “Cast it.”Holding his wand out, Harry kept his eyes locked on the book then cast the spell, making sure it was pronounced right and the wand movement exact. When it was cast, there was a puff of yellow light then a soft crack followed by an orange smoke surrounded his wand turning into the same kind of glass-like substance and breaking apart, falling to the floor. After it finished, he lowered his wand and asked, “It's gone?”“Gone,” Severus said with a smug smirk, patting him on the shoulder. Closing the book and vanishing it to the place he had all his others stored, he said, “That's enough for tonight. We're all tired. Let's get some sleep. The elves will keep working, so they should have these two rooms and the kitchen complete by the time we wake up.”“Good,” Sirius said then yawned and stretched. “Just don't expect us up at the butt-crack of dawn. I plan to sleep in. This will be the first time we've gotten to stay in bed together without having to worry about being caught, so I want to relish it.”“As we don't have anything pressing tomorrow, sleeping in isn't something I'll grouse about,” Severus admitted, completely exhausted from the events of the day.Ruffling Harry's hair, Sirius guided him to the room off this one, an old parlor that was their temporary bedroom. “Good. Because if you did that, I was turning your hair blond.”Snorting and rolling his eyes, Severus shook his head and trailed along. All he wanted to do was find the comfortable bed and sleep, nothing more. There was still much to attend to, but he wanted rest before they tackled it. Besides, he was locked in this house with both Sirius and Harry, something that meant he had to stay alert for not only their normal shenanigans, but any plotting they might do. As they were both fairly unpredictable in some areas, that was a must. There was also Sirius' propensity for agreeing to almost everything Harry wanted. That he needed to stay alert for as you never knew what it might entail. On top of that was their want to drag him into the middle of whatever deranged ideas they had for fun. If he didn't stay alert, he would end up blindsided and in the middle whether he wanted to be or not! That was not happening. Which meant he had to not only run herd over them, something that was harder than keeping track of the entirety of Slytherin, but stop plans before they pulled him in. To do that, he needed to be at his best. So, sleep was a priority.
Waking with a groan, Severus squinted as he looked at the windows in the room they were using to sleep in. Then he scowled. It was a disgustingly bright and sunny morning with birds tweeting merrily. Eyes narrowed at the sun streaming in, he snagged his wand from under the pillow he was using then leveled it at the window. One non-verbal spell later and the curtains were not only shut, allowing no light at all through, but there was a silencing charm that let in none of the cheery noises the foul feathered things were making. Good! Shaking his head, he groaned then stuffed the wand under his pillow, fully planning to go back to sleep.
Just as his head was once more about to hit the pillow and him planning to return to his blissful slumber, his brow furrowed. Something was off.Shaking his head, he tried to think what it was. At the moment, he was lying on his stomach. That was—well, it was strange. When sleeping with the two, he was normally on his side, facing Harry. The normal sleeping arrangements were him on one side of Harry and Sirius on the other, both of them facing Harry. He never slept on his stomach unless alone. Concentrating, he could feel and hear Sirius on one side of him. The way Sirius breathed while sleeping was something he was accustomed to, so he knew it well. Then he could hear and feel Harry on the other side of him. In fact, Harry had an arm draped over his back, one leg thrown over one of his legs. Black's arm was also draped over his back. Sirius head was resting next to his while Harry's was lying on the back of one of his shoulders.Lifting his head, he looked at the two, brow furrowed. Vaguely, he wondered how in Merlin's name he ended up sleeping between them when that wasn't the way they went to sleep. Groaning, he let his head drop onto the pillow, deciding he was too tired to suss it out now. Besides, it wasn't like it mattered how they slept. Most of the times before, it was to hide that Harry was in bed with them if someone poked their head into Sirius' room. They could handle that relationship being exposed, they just didn't want it revealed about Harry. Now that wasn't a concern. It was just that it wasn't 'normal', nothing more.Smiling just a bit as he drifted off, he had to admit that it felt good. So, he didn't mind.
