Chapter 2
Coming out of the bedroom, dressed in nothing but his boxer briefs and an open robe, Harry made a beeline straight for the kitchen. As he did, he paid attention to where he was walking as there were boxes piled all over and he was barefoot, something normal for him first thing in the morning. Still mostly asleep, despite the shower he had just taken, he could smell bacon cooking, something that drew him in that direction.
Stepping in, he made his way over to the stove where Remus was standing and wrapped his arms around him, resting his chin on one shoulder. Looking at what he was doing, he grinned, “Smells great! Please tell me we have coffee and not tea.”Giving one of Harry's hands a pat, Remus chuckled, “No coffee, sorry. I'll make sure to go down to the village and get some today when I stock up. This is just something I grabbed quickly so we had a meal. However, we have fresh milk, butter and eggs. I got those from a farmer not far from here that sells them. It's not something we've had since living in Russia. And I'm not sure where in Merlin's name the coffee maker is, honestly. It's in one of the boxes, though I'm not sure which one. I didn't want to chance summoning it and causing an avalanche. So, I just grabbed tea.”“Yum,” Harry grinned. Giving Remus a squeeze, he then stretched with a groan. Looking around, he asked, “Where is Sirius?” As Remus' cottage was small, he would have run into him somewhere after coming out of the bedroom.“Over at Grimmauld Place,” Remus explained, removing the last of the bacon from the pan and cracking in the eggs. “He procured five new elves, so he's setting them to work. That and he was getting his hands on the catalogs we need to order necessities. From what he said, he can get the appliances from the continent, so there isn't an issue with incompatibility like there may be from the States.” Smiling as he watched the eggs, he added, “Hedwig showed up not long before you came out. She's outside dozing in a small owlery out there. I made sure that she had plenty of food and water. We know she didn't fly all the way, but it was still rough on her and she's tired.”“I'll make sure to go out and see her after breakfast,” Harry said with a grin, happy she made it safely. Sobering up, he asked, “How much do we have to do today and does it involve going to that nasty place to tend to it?”“Quite a lot,” Remus told him honestly as he took care of the eggs, knowing just how Harry and Sirius liked theirs. “I'll tend to the bit in town alone so no one suspects anything. All of us are going to have to go through those catalogs and pick out whatever. Then there are other bits and bobs that come up. So, we'll be busy. Nothing to worry about, though, as it's not stressful. The elves are handling the house and Sirius is only going to go over there once a day to run herd and make sure they are doing what they need to. It shouldn't be a problem, honestly, as we know elves do their jobs right.” Chuckling, he added, smiling as he did, “Sirius is having the elves put a rooftop garden on it for you. We'll set up the owlery up there, of course, but it'll give all of us somewhere to sit to get fresh air.”“Good,” Harry grinned, happy with that, then began summoning tableware and setting the table. As he did, he asked, “How much of a problem is filing the bonding certificate going to be, do you know? It's different with each country. As stodgy as it is here about some bits, I'm wondering if it won't be as bad as us having to do it in the States.”“It won't be,” Remus assured him, taking the eggs out of the pan and putting them on the serving platter. “It's already filed, in fact. As they are considered private, there are spells on them to hide the names, so it won't come out that way. We know it will eventually, but as you took the last name of Lupin-Black, instead of keeping Potter, it'll hold off some. For a time anyway. The States were odd in that they are more religious in nature, thus not as accepting of the same sex partnerships in some ways. As long as we had the official certificate from another country, something we did, it was put in place fast. Our solicitor is handling the worst of it from here on out, making sure it stays private.” Starting to send the food to the table, he then poured the tea into the pot and sent it along, making sure to have what else they needed for condiments.Taking a seat at the table, pulling his phone out of the pocket of his robe and setting it by his plate, Harry began pouring tea for all of them. Once that was done, he began to add what he wanted to his. Though it would be odd to most Brits, he just did honey in it, nothing more. That was something he picked up elsewhere and went with. He thought it tasted better and didn't hide the flavor of the tea. Taking a sip when he was done, he sighed. Oh, it wasn't bad, it just tasted different than what he was used to now, nothing more. One more thing to grow accustomed to again.Coming over to the table after everything was on it and the charms to keep it hot were placed on the plates, Remus poured his own tea. Looking at the phone that was by Harry's plate, he gave an amused snort. This was something they were used to by now as it had started with Harry being 'claimed' by Marissa and she had given him the phone. From what they saw, it was the way most teenagers Harry's age were when it came to the phones. Many adults were as well as it was an immeasurable tool for so much. He and Sirius weren't as much, though Sirius kept his on him at all times because of business. Taking a sip of his tea, he chuckled then asked, “No call from Marissa yet?”“I've gotten a couple of texts,” Harry snickered. “I think she's adjusting to the time difference, honestly. She's not sure of that yet as it's huge.”“I'm sure she'll adjust then it'll go back to normal,” Remus told him, entirely amused. Sobering up, he added, “It's only for a couple of years, Harry, then we're going back. Marissa and your other friends won't abandon you. As Plato promised to bring Marissa over with him when he comes to tend to part of the business end once Sirius gets it up and running, you'll get to see her. And, as we promised, we'll visit here and there.”“I know,” Harry sighed, shaking his head, missing his friends already. “I understand why Sirius wanted to do this and don't have a problem with it. As long as we stay together, we'll be fine. Besides, that lot isn't about to move on and forget me. I know that. There are just some insecurities here and there over it, nothing more.”“No one is going to say anything to you about how much you talk to them, you have my word,” Remus reassured him with a smile. Marissa and the group of about six girls that hung around with her were the only real friends Harry had since they had taken him all those years ago. Because they had to move around so much to stay hidden and didn't stay in one place long, Harry hadn't had a chance to make friends like others his age. It was just the three of them, for the most part. So, when the friendship started with all the girls, he and Sirius had encouraged it all they could. Now they both felt guilty about ripping him away from that for the couple of years it would take to get this opportunity up and running.Smiling at Remus, Harry nodded, “Understood.” Looking at the door to the outside that was in the kitchen, he sighed, “Sirius needs to hurry up. I'm starving and that bacon smells great. If he doesn't, I'm going to eat his share as well before he gets back.”Chuckling at that, Remus looked amused. “I do concur there. So, he needs to get it in gear. He shouldn't be long, though. Nothing to worry about.”“I am worried,” Harry admitted with a sigh, shaking his head. “Until we reveal that we're back, it's a concern. The same with him going it alone, no matter what he's doing. We all know how bad it is here, from what's been in the papers. And we can guess that it's probably horrendous, as the Prophet is well known for not reporting the worst of it.”“There is that, yes,” Remus agreed. “He'll manage, Harry. You know that. The three of us weren't able to hide for so long without him knowing what he was doing. This is the same kind of thing. Besides, it'll only be for a week, no more than that. As we planned, after that we'll all three go tend to whatever together. That will help. Between the three of us, we'll remain safe, as we always have.”Harry was about to answer, when he heard the crack of Apparation outside. Relieved, knowing it was Sirius, he shouted, as he heard the front door open, “About time you got back! Remus and I were about to eat your breakfast!”Chuckling as he came into the kitchen, Sirius then ruffled Harry's already tousled hair before sitting down, saying, “You better not. I would get even if you did!” Looking around at the spread on the table, feeling and hearing his stomach giving a growl, he said, “This looks good!” Glancing at the condiments, not seeing his hot sauce there, he asked, “Where is the Tabasco?”Snorting and starting to dish up the food, Remus told him, completely amused, “I don't have any idea, Sirius. It's in a box somewhere, probably in the same place the coffee pot is. I'll see about finding it later. It was a case of having other things to do rather than worry about hunting that up.”Moaning, poking at his food as Harry chuckled, he shook his head, “We're finding that, all there is to it. It's bad enough I'm going to have to actually brave going into Muggle areas or order it from the States to get it, but I need it on my food!”“You'll manage, just like I am without my coffee this morning,” Harry grinned, shoveling the great food into his mouth. Nodding at the flavor, he asked Remus, “Any way to get the milk, eggs, butter and that from this place when we move? I haven't had anything this good in a long time.”“I can easily set up an order with him and pick it up a couple times a week. Not an issue there. I do have to admit that the fresh is far superior to what we're used to. I'll go over and tend to that today after getting groceries.” Remus told him with a smile, enjoying his own food. “I do believe he sells other bits as well, such as jams and jellies. I'll take a look and pick up what I think we'll like.”“Set it up,” Sirius said as he dug into his food. After swallowing, he began explaining, “I have the elves and they are hard at it. They're starting with the downstairs first, getting that in shape, then they'll tend to the top floor. After that, they'll divide up and take on the rest. They assure me that it'll be done in the week. As they finish, they'll come over and get what they need. Once a day all three of us are going to go over and tend to whatever pests they can't handle. It won't take long and that'll give us a chance to check on their progress. Which means that we have to start getting not only deliveries set up, but ordering what we need. That comes first. The appliances we have to tend to today, no two ways around it. Then we have to get the furniture for the bedroom. Everything else we'll work on from there. I'm also ordering the skylight kit for the bedroom. The elf I put in charge said they can easily get that in place and it won't conflict with what else they put on the roof.” Grinning, he added, “And they are putting the indoor pool in the basement. That's something we'll order today as well. From what I was told, they can easily take care of it, the sauna and hot tub without an issue. So, we'll get the kits for those ordered as well. It won't be the same as we had in the States, but it'll be close.”“When I get back from picking up supplies, we'll start on it,” Remus told him, happy that so much was started. That meant they could move rather quickly and be somewhere more comfortable. As he was about to press on, the whiny voice of Marissa came from Harry's phone saying, “Harrryyyyyyyy”. Chuckling at the ringtone for her, he said, “I was wondering when that was coming. It's been almost 24 hours without a phone call. I'm sure she was dying.”Grinning himself, Harry set the phone up on the stand then answered, making sure the hands-free was on so he could eat. “Morning, Marissa,” he said, continuing to shovel food into his mouth.“Harry, do you know it's one in the morning here? We've been without you for over 24 hours!” Marissa whined into the phone, her snooty, upper class accent seeming thicker than normal. “What time is it there, anyway?”“It's about nine in the morning. We're just having breakfast,” Harry told her, chuckling. It felt good to talk to his best friend, though.Huffing, Marissa pouted, “I don't like this. It's too far away, Harry.”“I know,” Harry sighed, shaking his head. “We'll manage.” Looking at the grinning Remus and chuckling Sirius, he said, “Remus and Sirius are here.” Motioning for them to say hi, they did and he waited.“Hi Remus. And I'm still not talking to you, Sirius the pervert! You took our Harry away from us!” She huffed, pouting, something you could easily hear in her voice. As that was normal and expected, Sirius grinned from ear to ear as he ate. “I miss you too, Marissa. You'll get to see him, I swear. Your dad promised to bring you with him when he comes here and we swore we would come visit several times a year.”Huffing loudly, Marissa shot back, “It's not the same! We need our Harry and you know it! It's the start of swimsuit season and we need him to help us pick them out. And we have the slumber parties. Those aren't the same without him.” Pouting more, she whined, “We miss our Harry.”Trying not to chuckle, though looking completely amused, Remus soothed, “It's not the same, we know that. It'll only be for a couple of years. Besides, with the video call function on the phones, when you need Harry to help you, like picking out the swimwear, you can easily call and have him do it that way. As we told you before we left, we take no issue with how much you call Harry or how long you talk.”“You are so sweet, Remus,” Marissa sighed. “You and Harry. How you both put up with Sirius the pervert, I'll never know!” She huffed.Laughing at that, as it was a running joke, Sirius said, “And if this plays out right, we'll be moving close to you, so Harry will be right at hand all the time. Think of it that way.” It wouldn’t work, and he knew it, but he was putting it out there. He didn't take what Marissa called him seriously, as the young lady was sweet and the name was a joke, the same with what she said about him. It was just her way of dealing with so much and looking good, nothing more. “And I would think that the pervert name was something that you would have given up by now because what happened was an accident.”“Now, I do agree with Sirius there, Marissa,” Remus told her, still looking completely amused. “Padfoot did not mean to drool on you. It was just one of those things as what you were doing felt good, nothing more.” The incident that the name was attached to was an innocent one. Marissa had been rubbing Padfoot's belly after Sirius shifted into his Animagus form. Like many of the girls that Harry was friends with, Marissa found the big dog adorable. Understandably, she had wanted to pet him. In fact, she had been so good at it, she had both of Padfoot's back legs going from the belly rubs and he had accidentally drooled all over where his head was resting, on her chest, getting it all over her white shirt. Since then, because it was all over her chest, Sirius had been tagged with the pervert name.“You are always so sweet, Remus, especially when you defend him,” Marissa sighed. “How you two put up with Sirius I'll never know.” Before Sirius could say anything in his defense, she pressed on, “How is the house you're staying at? What's it like?”Sighing, Harry began explaining the issues. Though it was a small thing, these were the types of conversations that he always shared with his friends, so it felt good and normal to do that with her. That made him feel a tad better about the situation, though it increased his longing to go home. He would deal, though.
Tossing aside the appliance catalog after having ordered what they needed, Sirius leaned back in his chair with a sigh. Grabbing his butterbeer, he took a drink, smiling as he did. It had been years since they'd had this and it still tasted good. In the States, they had something called Sorcerous Sodas. Those came in all kinds of flavors, including one that was purportedly like butterbeer. It just wasn't the same, though it was close. So, it was great to finally get the original once more. Glancing over at Harry, who was looking through the catalog for furniture, he noticed he looked tired. Well, that would be considered normal as it was early in the morning in the time zone they were used to functioning in. As they had been up what would be considered all night, it was bound to take its toll. After all, it had on him and Remus, that's for damned sure. Remus had gone out, tended to the groceries and other bits, then found what they all considered necessities and he was now taking a nap. As it was just under a week since the full moon, he was tired.
Sighing, tired himself and wanting a nap, he shook his head. Smiling as Harry checked his mobile for texts, he couldn't help but feel rotten for doing this to him. Harry—it sometimes was hard to fathom how much he had changed over the years. What they had taken from that rotten house was a little boy that was willing to do anything and put himself in danger for approval from those around him because he got none at home. There had been no self confidence in anything, including the abilities he was stellar at. That was far different by now. Before they moved to California a few years ago, Harry had gained that by having him and Remus around and them teaching him to have that in various areas. It had taken time, but they had managed. The same with not having to seek approval from those around him. What they hadn't managed, his friends in California had.The girls—at first, they had been highly dubious of the gaggle of obviously wealthy girls that were always around, wondering about what they wanted. That wasn't the case anymore. All those girls were what they called 'outcasts'. Though their families were quite wealthy, something those around them would suck up to, they were also the ones that had plenty of talk behind their backs because all of them were lesbians, something not readily accepted in the States. The girls were good for Harry, giving him friends that would totally accept him, despite the fact that he was gay and bonded to two older men. They also gave him his first real, close friends since they left the UK so long ago. They were all odd and dragged Harry along to do the absolutely strangest things, such as shopping for lingerie with him being the one to tell them if it looked good or not, slumber parties and all manner of other strange bits, but Harry loved it. It was odd, of course, especially how it started, but he and Remus didn't say a word, despite the fact they sometimes felt like they were overrun in their house by teenage girls. Harry adored them and they felt the same about Harry. To him and Remus, that's all that mattered. That and they made Harry happy. Harry adored his 'girlfriends', as they all called them, and they Harry. Especially Marissa.Watching Harry toss aside the one catalog after marking some bits, he asked, “You doing okay, Harry?”Taking a sip of his own butterbeer, Harry then nodded. Smiling just a little, he said, “I'm good. Don't worry about me. I miss my friends already, but as long as I'm with you two, we'll be fine. Just like it's always been. It's just going to take some adjustment and me getting used to watching my back again. That I haven't had to do in what seems like forever. The same with not going out on my own like I did in LA.”“We'll make it as easy on all of us as we can,” Sirius assured him. Standing up, he walked over and sat next to Harry, slipping an arm around him. Pulling him closer, he gave him a soft kiss. Feeling Harry lean against him when they broke it off, he said, “It'll be strange on all of us, but we'll manage. Once it's set up, I swear we'll go back. I adore it there as much as you do. So does Remus. It's just going to take a couple of years, no more than that. If Plato and I have our way, less than that. We think less, actually. These phones are something they don't have here and could help tremendously in what's going on. Far better than that antiquated shite they are using. If they take off well enough and I can get everything set up we need, we'll be gone sooner. Either way, we're not living here again.”Leaning against Sirius, smiling, Harry told him, “Just give me some time. I'm still adjusting. It's only the second day, after all.” Lowering his voice, he admitted, “This time it was harder to go than all the others combined. We're together, though, so I'll manage.”“We will,” Sirius assured him with a smile, giving him a squeeze. “And, unlike all those others, this isn't forever. Just remember that.” Looking around at the mass of catalogs still there, he shook his head then told Harry, “I vote we give this up for a time and follow Remus' example. I think we're all tired from the time change. We've got the worst handled, so this can wait. Besides, I think it would do us all good to lie down together.” Grinning, he added, “Make sure to bring your phone so your 'girlfriends' wake us up. That will make everything seem normal.”Laughing at that, knowing it was true, Harry nodded, reaching out to grab the phone that was sitting on the table. “It will.”“You'll be back with them soon,” Sirius assured him then stood. Stretching, he groaned then added, “We'll make sure to send them all kinds of crap to soften the blow and keep them from whining too much. One of them will be butterbeer so they can understand why we say that other shite isn't the same.”Standing himself, Harry agreed, “We do. I think a case each. After they taste it, they'll be begging for more.”Clapping Harry on the back, he guided him towards the bedroom. “Make sure that you jostle the bed a lot when you get in so we wake Remus. Can't let him get away with being too amused by what Marissa said to me.” Hearing Harry laugh again, smiling that he managed that with how Harry had to be feeling, Sirius guided him along, talking about some stuff they would do to have fun while here. It was a start, that's all they needed. He just wasn't ready yet to think about the hell going on in this country or what it could cause them. That would come later.
