Draco wasn’t totally sure if he COULD trust Harry. The teen had done so much to him in the past. Was it even plausible to expect him to be able to care for Draco’s needs the way he would have to in order for this spell to go well and keep Draco safe and healthy?
He sighed, and turned back to the book, reading through a few passages, then he found one that gave him pause.
“The ritual must be undertaken with care, and both parties must be aware of all the implications and the roles they will fill within it. If the ritual does not feel the intent matches the requirements of the binding itself, it will not work.
“The supplicant must know that s/he is giving her/himself totally to the Owner, to do with as they please, and must willingly surrender all material and monetary assets that are theirs to give, with all expectations never to see them again.
“Likewise, the Owner must know that they are consenting to care totally for the supplicant, fulfilling all of her/his needs: Food and drink, hygiene, happiness, clothing, shelter, physical touch and comfort, protection and affection must all be promised within the Owner's mind in return for loyalty, servitude, and fidelity.
“If one partner is unaware of any aspect of the ritual or is unwilling to give one of the necessary components, the ritual will fail without exception.”
Draco bit his lip. ‘This changes things somewhat.’ He decided.
If Harry had to know what he was getting into, really KNOW it, before it was done, then there would be no doubt that he would protect Draco if it did indeed work.
‘I can trust the ritual to let me know if Harry still means to neglect me in some way, or harm me. So, I can trust Harry’s word on whether he can do this or not, and I will know for sure if he was truthful when we do the ritual.’ Draco felt lighter, suddenly. ‘This will be the final test, and it is one that cannot be cheated on.’
He nodded, and grabbed his wand, hiding the book within the chaos of his bookshelf, knowing his father was unlikely to find it even if he looked among Draco’s books for something, and if he did find it, could not be sure if Draco was using it for deceitful purposes.
He walked down to the study, knocking on it twice.
“Enter.”
Draco opened the door, seeing Lucius seated in an armchair, drink in hand. “Yes, Draco?”
“Father, I wanted to go to Bellview.” Draco said calmly, referencing the smallish Wizarding village nearest Malfoy Manor. “May I go unaccompanied? Mother is gone to one of her fittings for a new gown.”
Lucius nodded. “You have your signet?” He asked.
Draco held up his hand, displaying the Malfoy signet ring, of which there were but four, on his finger. When he needed to come home, the ring would act as a Portkey, landing him in the receiving room. “I do.” He said calmly.
“Very well, then. Do not take too long, and do not spend all your money, my son.” Lucius said with a small smile, indicating that he knew it would be impossible for Draco to empty his private account at Gringotts with one shopping trip, no matter how much Draco loved buying expensive things for no reason other than that he could.
Draco nodded, then closed the door and set off on foot. It was only a ten minute walk to the village, and he didn’t mind the exercise.

“Albert.” Draco called, slamming the door to the nondescript establishment behind him. “Get your lazy arse out here!”
Albert stumbled out of the back room, he had been in, smiling widely. “Draco the ever-so-annoying Malfoy! How can I help you?”
Draco gave the man a withering look. “You’re not funny.”
“I’ve heard differently.” Albert said calmly.
Draco just rolled his eyes. “Bastard.”
“And proud of it!”
Draco ignored the comment. “I need a suitable piece of silver to fashion into a blade. A CEREMONIAL blade.” He said. “And this must be kept secret.”
Albert frowned. “Why would you need to make…” His eyes widened in realization. “That rite hasn’t been invoked in CENTURIES!” He breathed.
Draco scowled at him. “And if you know what’s good for you, you’ll keep silent about it!” He hissed.
Albert nodded. “I have a good piece here. You’ll need to shape it and sharpen it, but once you can find time, it should only be a three-day job, at most. Frequent breaks will help the metal to harden, as long as you use the right spells and give them time to settle.”
Draco smiled, as Albert brought the metal over. “Good. That’s perfect. Do you have anything to use for the hilt?”
Albert swallowed, then asked in a small voice, “What color?”
Draco narrowed his eyes. “Green, preferably light.”
“How about dark green? I have some lovely-”
“Let me see what you don’t want to part with.” Draco said firmly.
Albert sadly got a box out from behind the counter and looked at it fondly, before handing it to Draco.
Draco eyed him, and opened it. Inside was a round handle for a dagger, made of Avada-green jade. “This is perfect. How much?” He asked, not looking away from it.
Albert whined. “I wanted to keep it.”
Draco grabbed Albert’s shirt. “How. Much?” He asked harshly.
“Four hundred galleons.” Albert answered morosely.
“Two hundred and fifty. Don’t complain.” Draco said.
Albert sighed. “But it’s so BEAUTIFUL!”
“I know. And now it’s mine. When I pass, the blade I fashion will be willed to your shop, I’ll make sure. The person who will own me will listen in this, I believe.” Draco said consolingly, knowing that the shop was well-warded against surveillance, tracking and recording spells.
Albert perked up. “It will make a beautiful decoration.” He said happily.
Draco smiled. “Indeed it will.” He paid and slipped the shrunken purchases into his pocket. “Now, I have something else to buy.”
“All right, then. I’ll see you around?”
Draco bit his lip, hesitating at the door, then replied softly, “I don’t know.” Before he left.
The hardest part of this whole ordeal would be walking away from the life he was used to, including all the friends he had made, and those whose constant banter kept him on his toes.
Albert was not one of the acquaintances his parents approved of, but he was Draco’s first adult friend, and Draco was loathe to part with the man. He was a vampire, but he was kind and gentle, and had a sense of humor that had survived many centuries of hiding. He was loyal, and had been one of the first Hufflepuffs in Hogwarts, sorted by the founders themselves.
Draco hated that he may never see him again, but he needed the security the spell offered, and nothing else was showing any promise at all.
This was how it had to be.

Draco walked into the third apothecary of the day, smiling winningly at the witch behind the counter. “Giselle.” He said softly, when she didn’t even glance up from her paperwork.
“Draco!” The red-headed teen exclaimed, running around the counter to throw her arms around him in a warm hug. “I haven’t seen you at all this summer. How are you? How was Hogwarts? We should get together for tea sometime soon.” She finally took a breath, then let it out, and smiled. “I missed you.” She finished simply.
Draco chuckled. “I missed you, too. Hogwarts was the same as always. Boring, full of petty fights with Potter, and Pansy was just as clingy as ever.” He shuddered, lightly, and Giselle smothered a giggle.
“What brings you here? Just a visit, or are you here for ingredients?” She asked, walking back behind the counter and putting the unfinished order form away.
Draco smiled. “I wish it WAS just a visit, but, alas, I need some rare ingredients, and I can only trust you to sell me the best quality you have.” He pulled out a piece of paper with what he needed written on it, and handed it to her. “This is what I’m looking for, and I need them now. I trust this won’t be a problem?”
Giselle looked over the list of ingredients, and whistled lowly. “Well, it won’t be cheap, but we do have them in stock. Can I ask what would use these? I’ve never seen this-” She pointed to one of them, understanding the need for privacy, “and this one here, used together. It’s… Most unusual.”
Draco smirked, and leaned in close to her.
Giselle leaned the rest of the way, offering her ear eagerly.
“Have you ever heard of Amore Schiavo?” Draco whispered in her ear.
Giselle leaned back, eyes wide. “Oh, Draco. Are you SURE?”
“If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t be doing this.” Draco said firmly. “I know what this means, and I am prepared.” He said, knowing that that sounded ambiguous enough to be safe.
Giselle nodded, looking sad and as though it pained her to help him, knowing what he was setting out to do. She did, however, collect the ingredients he needed, in the right quantities, and the price she gave him was more reasonable than it should have been. “Good luck, then.” She said softly.
Draco turned and smiled at her. “Thank you. Hopefully we’ll see each other again sometime.” He said, then turned and headed back home, all his purchases shrunk and safely in his pockets.
