Freshly eleven year old Harry Potter was still in shock. It had been two days since he a giant man named Hagrid had told him he was a wizard and taken him to Diagon Alley. Even the place seemed surreal. If it wasn't for his new owl companion he would've convinced himself it was all some weird prank. He had decided to call her Hedwig, a name he found while scanning through one of his textbooks. He would've been incredibly lonely without her as his family had taken to pointedly ignoring his presence.
It was just as well, they never had anything pleasant to say to him and he had to admit it was nice not doing all the housework. His stomach started growling loudly reminding him he had yet to eat that day.
" I'll go try to get ahold something without them noticing me" Harry mumbled to Hedwid,
" You're lucky you can go catch your own food" he said fumbling with the latch on her cage.
The sun was just starting to go down so Hedwig flew to the window sill and perched there to watch the sun set. She would be gone by the time Harry came back upstairs not to return until early morning. He stroked her feathers fondly before leaving the safety of his bedroom. The house was too silent, he made it all the way downstairs before he realized that nobody was there. The absence of Dudley's television blaring was quite peaceful.
In the kitchen he fixed himself a ham sandwich taking his time to make it extra scrumptious since he wasn't being glared at or rushed. Fumbling for the pantry light he finally got it on and found what he was looking for. He took an entire bag of crisps and his sandwich back up to his room. Just in time it seemed as soon as he made it upstairs he heard the front door open and the larger members of the Dursley family stomp a cross the threshold. He closed his bedroom door faster then you could say "ye're a wizard" hoping to avoid confrontation. Apparently they felt the same way he did and left him to himself. Harry supposed he should feel lonely but he appreciated the solitude.
He spent the entire month of August pretty much alone besides Hedwig. Dudley was still too terrified of his magic to consider new ways to torment him. Aunt Petunia had however come around to assigning him chores once more. He had a full lost of things to do a few days before September would begin. It was a beautiful day perfect blue skies and sunshine teased Harry through the windows as he scrubbed the kitchen floor with a small scrub brush and a bucket of soap. He was passing the time imagining what Hogwarts would look like, her surmised from he'd read it was a large castle somewhere in Scotland. He had barely skimmed his copy of Hogwarts, A History but he remembered it saying the the great halls ceiling was bewitched to look like the sky outside.
Lost in his daydreams he barely noticed Dudley walking through, didn't even mind re-scrubbing the section of floor his cousin had stomped upon. He finally felt like maybe he could belong somewhere and that was enough to make even the dreariest chores pleasant. He floated through the rest of his chores and scraped up the small amount of money ( That's just muggle money he thought to himself smiling.)that he had saved up over the last couple years. Without anyone noticing he walked down the street and caught the ice cream man at the park. He treated himself to a large chocolate cone.
He sat on a park bench to eat his ice cream and watch the children that were playing. He had never actually played there, not for lack of opportunity but because the playground itself made him feel uneasy. No matter how much fun the other kids were having Harry never so much as went down the slide. Whatever bothered him so about the place didn't ruin the enjoyment he got watching various mothers and fathers of the neighborhood playing with their children. They probably thought he was weird sitting alone there just watching never playing but he didn't care. Harry cherished the look of tender concern and fear he'd seen on countless mothers faces when their child had scraped a knee or bumped their head, always followed by a kiss and an assurance that they're just fine.
Mothers were a curious thing to Harry, Petunia didn't do anyone any good, she just catered to Dudley's every whim. He had seen other mothers like her at the playground as well and made mental notes to avoid those children imagining they'd all be prats. He was much more impressed with the mothers he actually playing with their kids, getting all the kids to play hide and go seek together. It happened frequently, one blonde lady, with a blonde daughter of around nine always started the game and no one stopped playing until every child was found. She made her follow the same rules as all the other children which is something Petunia had ever understood. Petunia looked past anything wrong or offensive that Dudley did and it gave him an awful sense of entitlement.
Harry's mind wandered back to the topic of Hogwarts. Just three more days and he would be getting on a train and into a whole new life.
"CRUD" Harry cried aloud.
Jumping to his feel he ran back to his Aunt and Uncle's house. He found his Uncle Vernon alone in the living room staring that telly, not sure how to begin he decided to wait for and advert before saying anything. When the cop show Vernon was watching finally came to break his uncle beat him to it.
"What is it Boy?" Vernon grunted not looking up.
Well, I start at... My school on the first and I'll need a ride to Kings Cross that day. I was wondering if you could take me?" Harry asked politely, he didn't want to ruin his chances.
"Train eh? Funny way to get to a magic school, I suppose all the flying carpets have flats" Vernon chuckled to himself enjoying his little joke,
"You're lucky, we're going into London that day anyway we can drop you off."he finally replied
"Thank you Uncle Vernon, why are you guys going into London that day?" Asked Harry.
"Got to go to some sort of specialist up there to perform Dudley's surgery, can't have him starting at Smeltings with a tail!" His uncle spat out angrily.
Luckily his show came back on just then and Harry made a quick escape to his room. Hedwig hooted in greeting at his entrance, he responded by opening her cage and reaching for the owl treats he had bought her.
"You're so beautiful Hedwig. I'm sure you'll be much happier at Hogwarts just a couple more days!" Harry told opening his window to let her out into the cool night.
Too excited to sleep he reexamined all his school supplies. Holding his wand in his hand he enjoyed the very natural connection he felt to it. Since he had read his potions book the least he settled into bed with it and scanned it until he fell asleep.

Harry was awake and ready to go three hours before the Durlsey's even woke up. He had breakfast sitting on the table and all his school things aside from Hedwig's cage stuck in the trunk by the time Vernon grumbled a thanks for the coffee and breakfast. Feeling as though nothing could bring him down he hand buttered everyone's toast and cheerfully poured himself, Dudley and Aunt Petunia orange juice before sitting down to his plate. Following everyone's example Harry kept quiet while he ate, it took all he had not burst into song but he didn't figure the Dursley's would much appreciate it. Dudley looked rather nervous, before he could ask why he remembered that Dudley was going to have surgery that day.
He didn't dare say it aloud but Harry joked in his thoughts about how much more natural Dudley looked with the tail. He was lost in thought imagining Dudley leaving society to live on a farm and laze about in the mud. Laughing silently as he cleaned up the kitchen and did a final sweep of his room. Gathering his socks and his toothbrush up in his arms he reached for Hedwig's cage and was done. This was it he was leaving for at least a full term.
There was a brief argument with Dudley as he didn't want to sit next to Harry or the owl but finally Petunia bribed him with promise of a special dinner in London. On e they were all in the car time seemed to slow down. London was only an thirty minutes away but it seemed like hours of silence before they arrived at Kings Cross Station. To Harry's surprise Uncle Vernon jumped out of the car cheerfully and opened Harry's door before going to the back of his car and removing Harry's trunk. He took Hedwig from Harry's hands and stacked he atop his trunk. Smiling all the way Vernon walked him to to the space between platforms nine and ten.
With an evil grin he asked Harry,
"What platform did you say again? Nine and three quarters didn't ya? Should be right around here somewhere. Have a nice term!" Still grinning evilly at Harry he turned and strode out the station.
Harry was lost, Hagrid must've forgotten to tell him something. Maybe he had to pull out his wand and start tapping on the bricks in between the platform. That would call to much attention to himself so he started to panic instead. What was he going to do, he was already getting weird looks due to the owl he was toting around. It's not like he could even ask anyone because he wasn't quite sure where the school was.
He stood there at a loss for what to do next when he heard a snippet of conversation.
"Packed with muggles of course"
He stared at everyone trying to figure out who had spoken when he spotted a large amount of red heads with trunks similar to his own. One of them even had an owl. He got closer and heard the mother telling two identical boys to go ahead, they bantered back and forth for a moment and then one of the boys started walking towards the barrier between platforms nine and ten. Craning his neck to watch what he did all he saw was a large group of tourists walk by when they passed the boy was gone, Harry looked back towards the family missing the second boys departure.
Nothing else to do Harry approached the mother of the large family
"Excuse me ma'am" he began timidly
"Hello dear, is it your first year at Hogwarts? My Ronnie is starting this year." The women said in a pleasant voice.
"The thing is, I don't know how to..." Harry said with a bit more confidence,
"Don't know how to get on the platform, do you dear? Well you can go before Ron, you see the barrier between the two platforms? Walk right through it. Best do to it at a bit of a run if you're nervous." The kind lady informed him.
Thank you!" Harry exclaimed as she nudged him forward.
He got a tight grip on his luggage and starting out slow he gained speed heading towards the bricks. Closing his eyes convinced that a crash was imminent he broke into a full sprint. When he opened his eyes again he was on the other side. The Hogwarts Express was emblazoned upon the side of the bright scarlet train before him. All around families were saying their goodbyes, with no one to bid him farewell he walked alone down the train until he found an empty compartment towards the back. Once he got the compartment door open he tried to heft his trunk up the stairs. The trunk was much too heavy and after several attempts Harry was ready to give up.
"Need a hand?"
Came a voice from Harry, it was one of the twin boys he had followed through the barrier!
"Yeah that'd be great, I can't seem to get this damn thing up there." Harry replied.
"Oy! Fred! Over here." The boy called out.
Together the three of them got Harry's trunk put up and away and Hedwig's cage situated.
"Thank you guys!" Said Harry bushing his sweaty hair out of his forehead,
"What's that?" Asked one of the twins, pointing at his lightning scar.
"Blimey, are you?" Asked the other twin.
"He is..." Said the first twin, "aren't you?" He added to Harry
"What? " said Harry
"Harry Potter" chorused the twins.
"Oh him.." He replied, "I mean yes, I am."
The two red haired boys gawked at him. Harry felt his face turning red when luckily a voice came from outside the car
"Fred, George!? Are you in there?"
"Coming mum" said the twins with one final look at Harry before turning and exiting the train car.
Harry sat down by the window where, half hidden he could watch the red headed family on the platform outside, and hear what they were saying. After scrubbing the youngest nose and kissing her oldest son, who was a prefect. Their mother started warning the twins to behave and look after their brother.
"Ickle Ronnikins is safe with us mum!" Said Fred.
"Shut up!" The younger brother replied sullenly,
"Oh, mum! Guess who we met on the train" George said to his mother,
Harry leaned back in his seat so they wouldn't see him staring.
"Who dear?"
Fred said, "You know that small, dark haired boy that was near us in the station?"
"That was Harry Potter!" George finished.
Harry heard the only girls voice cry out,
"Oh mum, please let me go on the train and meet him!"
"No Ginny, you've seen him already. The poor boy isn't something you goggle at in the zoo! Is he really Fred? How do you know?"
"Asked him," Fred said assuredly, "saw the scar, it's really there, shaped like a lightning bolt!"
"Poor dear- no wonder her was alone, I wondered. He was ever so polite when he asked how to get onto the platform."
"Never mind that, d'ya reckon he remembers what You-Know-Who looks like?"
Their mother all at once looked very stern,
"I forbid you to ask him Fred! Don't you dare, as if he needs reminding of that on his first day of school!"
"Oh alright, keep your hair on!"
A whistle sounded.
"Hurry up then!" The mother said hurrying the three boys onto the train.
As they leaned out the window to be kissed goodbye their younger sister began to cry.
"Don't Gin, we'll send you tons of owls!" Called one twin
"We'll send you a Hogwarts toilet seat!"
"George!"
"Only joking!"
The train began to move, the sister half laughing half trying ran along with train waving until she couldn't keep up. Harry watched the girl and her mother disappear into the distance. Houses began to fly past the windows and fields and farms and more houses all in a colorful blur. Harry wasn't sure where he was going, but it had to be better then the place he was leaving behind.
