Chapter 3
After all that week of applicants, this one just happened to show up last minute, and just happened to get the job. Well, Harry was a bit on the wary side, but he knew Dumbledore well enough to trust his decision. It was quiet now in the house with all the interviews over. Harry now had the time to pour over some of the books in the library, trying to find something to deal with the Permanent Sticking Charm that Mrs. Black had cast on her portrait.
Harry had been pouring over some ancient looking charms books, when he found an intriguing entry in Weird Wizarding Dilemmas and Their Solutions:
“Flesh-eating slugs stay on their subject, due to a sticking charm in their saliva, the only way to counteract and detach the slugs use a repellant of Bundimun at a stronger degree than the normal cleaning solutions. 5x the amount in a cleaning solution should be added.”
“It couldn’t be that easy.” Harry thought. He went to the closet and pulled out a bottle of cleaning solution, reading the label to make sure it was the right kind. He went down to the kitchen and grabbed a jar from the pantry with the Bundimun. He measured out 4 tablespoons of the fungus and poured it in the solution, then swished it around.
Harry traveled to the foyer and quietly pulled back the curtains, trying not to wake the portrait up. As soon as he started spraying around the edges of the portrait, he noticed the edges coming back from the wall. It fell with a loud resounding thunk! The occupant of the portrait was definitely awake now. She was screaming loudly and irritatingly.
“Filth! Half-blood! And in the most noble and ancient house of Black! Be gone, be gone!” she screamed maliciously.
With a great heave, Harry, whilst trying not to let the earsplitting screaming of the woman get to him, dragged the portrait over to an overlarge fireplace.
“Incendio,” Harry said while pointing his wand at the portrait.
The portrait wouldn’t burn through.
“Silencio!” Harry screamed back at the portrait still pointing his wand and to his great relief, the spell actually worked. Harry walked out of the drawing room and called “locomotor portrait.” and the portrait followed him, up all the flights of stairs to the loft. He deposited the portrait there and went back to examine the wall behind where the portrait had been. Harry wanted to make sure the Bundimun wasn’t eating through the wall.
When Harry arrived at the spot he saw a mess and used a spell to clean it.
“Scourgify.”
The mess disappeared leaving a small door in the middle of where the portrait used to sit. Harry cautiously opened the door and saw an envelope inside. Harry picked up the envelope, which was yellow with age. The front was addressed such:
To: A Member of the most noble and ancient house of Black.
Harry tried to open it, but it refused to open. This may be something he has to save for Mr. Weasley since the Weasley’s are the only ones related to the family of Black that He knows. “Besides the Malfoys.” He pondered on that thought for a moment. A flash of blond crossed his mind and he sighed before pushing it deep down.
Summer just wasn’t the same without his friends. Harry decided to invite them back and went to write the letters. He would, of course, to invite Neville too, since Ginny was with him now… That was an odd thing. Harry would never have guessed, but at least Ron wasn’t trying to kill him anymore. Neville really came into his own over the past few years, no longer letting anyone bully him. His schoolwork improved greatly, he had only needed the confidence. Harry guessed that the battle with the death eaters in their fifth year gave him that.
Since then Neville has been a different man, and Ginny noticed right away. She didn’t give another girl a chance, she also didn’t give Neville the option to say “no.” either, and not that he seemed to mind. Who wouldn’t want to be with her, especially seeing how beautiful Ginny had become. Her auburn hair always sparkled as it hung down her back. And most boys couldn’t help staring. Most that is, except for Harry.
Harry was fond of Ginny, but merely as a sister. He laughed at the crush she had had on him and knew Ron had definitely pushed that. Not that Ron knew much on the issue of women; he didn’t even have to courage to ask Hermione on a date. His best friends were so much in love it was stupid.
Ron was a coward when it came to women, and Hermione was so stubborn not budging on the fact that Ron had to move first or else nothing would happen. Harry was glad though, at least Ron knew what he wanted. Harry, on the other hand, had no earthly idea. Harry knew Ginny wasn’t for him… He also knew he just couldn’t find a girl he really liked like that. The whole experience with Cho seemed like a minor thing now. Harry figured that it was just the idea of someone liking him that way that kept him interested. But now it was different. Harry always had someone else in mind, someone who would never accept the idea. So Harry just wished silently.
Late the next afternoon Harry was milling around in his drawing room.
“How nice it sounds to say it’s mine.” Harry thought.
His eye caught sight of Dobby, who was now working for him, scraping some Hinkypunk eggs off the large drape of the Black family tree. He smiled a bit. Harry was happy when Dobby asked to be employed by him. Dobby helps more than Harry thought possible. Harry’s interest was drawn to the outline of the Black family tree, his eyes rested on Narcissa Malfoy. Harry let out a sigh and thought about a pair of silver eyes.
Over the next few week members from the Order shuffled in and out, holding meetings and chatting briefly with Harry, but not revealing too much. All were annoyed by the fact that they couldn’t seem to get a grasp on any information about the Dark Lord. Even Snape was of no help. Voldemort hadn’t called for any meetings with his Death Eaters in a long time now. The only Death Eaters missing was Sirius’s cousin Bellatrix, Lucius Malfoy, and of course, Rookwood. Something was definitely wrong. The Dementors had vanished as well, but other than that all was normal, too normal. At first, Harry tried to feel anything but nothing came. Nothing, not even a slight twinge came from his scar.
On the morning of his birthday, Harry woke up a bit on the melancholy side. Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and Neville had not responded to any of his numerous owls. He didn’t know why and it bothered him. Usually, he would get at least four owls bearing gifts or letters, but all during the morning, everything was quiet. He went to the drawing room and picked up his Quidditch Match magazine to read. As his hand touched the magazine he felt a powerful jerk behind his navel, the room vanished from around him and sped forwarding a swirl of colors and a rush of wind the magazine pulling him onward.
