Hadrian was comfortable and content, a ray of sun bathed him in its warmth, he had found the perfect spot in the humid forest to relax, a spot with lots of fallen leaves to make a bed of sorts. Blinking lazily around, he took in the brown ground, with little grass due to most of the ground being covered in the now dead fallen leaves of the tall trees that were densely packed into the area. As far as he could see there were a variety of thick and thin tree trucks, and brown earth with the occasional illumination of sun light that managed to break through the thick foliage above. Lying back, he looked up at the hidden beauty of this forest; unless one looked up they would miss the best part, in Hadrian’s opinion. The colors that blended in the canopy above always took his breath away. Deep greens blended into lighter greens as very tone of green was represented, bluish greens, yellowed greens, soft greens, brown greens, greens with red undertones, and then the thinner green leaves that light filtered through making them glow. A smile graced his handsome face as searched the canopy for new colors, the heat from the forest and sun lulled him into a near slumbering state, until he heard a snap of a twig.
He wasn’t alone.
Sitting up, he looked towards the sound and then he leapt to his feet when he saw a shadow and then a patch of skin through dense trees.
With his heart in his throat, he peered through the trees, assessing the person making their way to him. A shudder went through him as the piercing dark blue stare of the man walking towards him met his vivid green eyes.
Stifling a gasp, Harry turned and quickly dashed into the forest, racing away from the man. Dodging trees and jumping over fallen branches and roots, Hadrian’s breath came out in pants as he sprinted deeper into the trees.
Hearing footfalls behind him, Harry glanced back, only to see the man was chasing him, and was very close to catching him. Trying to run faster, Hadrian looked around to see if there was any way to get away from the man, maybe an obstacle he could push in the man’s way.
Harry peeked back to where the man was following him, only to his surprise, the man was now running almost along the side of him.
In his shock, Hadrian was no longer looking forward and the sudden brightness in his peripheral vision distracted him from his pursuer. He looked ahead to see that they were entering a clearing, the blazing sun caused his vision to go white for a moment.
The man tackled Harry, who let out a startled yelp; the two landed in a pile of limbs a short way into the clearing the soft grass cushioning their fall.
Hadrian found himself on his back, the sun blocked out by the larger man who was hovering over Harry by supporting himself on his hands, which were firmly on the ground on either side of Harrys head.
“Must you always run from me?” The deep timber of his voice caused a shiver to go through Hadrian.
“You love to catch me, and you know it!” Hadrian answered with a laugh, smiling up at the man.
Bringing his hands up, Hadrian began to explore the other man. Running his hands over the man’s chest and torso, a thrill ran through him when his palms moved from skin to scales.
Along the man’s upper back, shoulders and down over his left pectoral were a gorgeous array of green and yellow scales.
Harry’s scales were dark green with a slight iridescence, making them flash different colors in the light. The man’s scales on the other hand faded from dark greens to light greens, with spots of yellow which Hadrian found almost hypnotizing.
“I’m beginning to think you prefer my scales to me,” the man said, cocking an eyebrow at Hadrian.
Harry’s tinkling laugh surrounded them for a moment.
“There’s nothing I prefer to you,” Hadrian whispered, wrapping his arms around the man’s neck and pulling him down to lie fully on Harry.
Harry let out a sigh when the man began to run his lips along his neck, the man’s hands, now free from supporting his weight, traversed Harry’s body, causing the younger man’s sigh to turn into a moan.
“And, you, my little viper, are my world,” the man breathed into Hadrian’s ear, while moving Harry’s legs so they wrapped around his hips.
Harry let out another moan and the man let out a growl when they settled together, their hard lengths pressing against each other.
“No!” Harry cried when he heard a sound off into the distance.
“Shush, my love, it will be alright,” the man said, trying to calm his mate down, running his hands along Harry’s sides to comfort him. “We will be together soon.”
“I don’t want to wake up yet! It hasn’t been long enough!” Harry cried, tears falling from the corners of his eyes. “It will be too long until I see you again!”
“Soon, we will be together in real life, not just in dreams, my little viper,” his mate answered softly, pressing his lips to Harry’s forehead.
Harry wrapped himself around his mate as tightly as he could; not wanting to leave the Wraith, wishing his alarm would stop and not pull him fully from this perfect place.
“My love,” his mate whispered, causing Harry to look up and into his dark blue eyes.
Hadrian took in the handsome features of his mate, the strong jaw, high cheekbones, and the thick eyebrows over those almond shaped eyes, the dimpled chin and the touch of grey mixed in his black hair around his temples.
His mate covered Hadrian’s lips with his own, and Harry melted into him, letting his eyes drop close as he was pulled into the passionate kiss.
When Hadrian opened his eyes again, he was in bed, his alarm letting off a ringing noise across the room, letting Harry know it was time to get up and get ready for the day.
Harry sent a strong explosive hex at it and allowed a small smile to grace his features when the clock burst into fiery pieces.
Instead of getting out of bed, Harry rolled over and allowed the deep feeling of loss to cover him.
He knew something was wrong, but couldn’t gather up the want to do anything about it.
Normally, after having a Wraith, Harry felt happy and content. Of course, as he got older and the Wraiths became erotic, he would wake up covered in come or needing a good wank. But, that was the extent of it, he never felt this way, like a hole had been left inside of him due to leaving his mate.
Curling himself into a ball, he stared at the wall next to his bed and let out a few tears every now and again to fall onto his bed.
When his House Elf, Pip, popped into the room, telling him that his Godfather was waiting in the sunroom to begin breakfast, Harry found that he barely had the energy to shoo the Elf away.
Sirius sat at a small wrought iron table in the glass enclosed sunroom, the recently risen sun bathing the room in a myriad of colors.
With a pop, Pip appeared next to the table, tugging at her flopped over ears, blinking up at Sirius.
“Where’s Hadrian, Pip?” Concern filling the man at Pips obvious upset.
“The young master is in his room, Lord Black; he lays in his bed and doesn’t move!” The small elf wailed, wringing the towel she wore in her tiny, long fingered hands.
Quickly getting up from his seat, Sirius left the sunroom and made the short trek to Harry’s room, readying his wand to check his godson over.
Entering Harry’s room, Sirius found him curled up into a ball in the center of his bed, facing the wall, his eyes open, staring at the wall with tears glistening on his face.
“Hadrian?” Sirius asked, gently reaching around his godson to turn him over so he could properly see him. “Can you hear me?”
Harry looking up at him was the only reply he got.
Running several spells on his young ward, Sirius was baffled by the results.
Harry was fine, nothing was physically wrong with him, but his heart rate was low and his magic was reading as almost being curled into a ball like its host was. The readings pointed to deep depression, but Hadrian had never shown signs of that before.
“Pup, I need you to tell me what happened?” Sirius got down on his knees next to the bed, to be eye level with his godson.
Harry just looked at him, tears continuing to fall out of those despondent green eyes.
“Pip!” Sirius shouted, the elf popping into the room, next to the bed. “I need you to go into the medicinal potions cabinet in my office and get me a pepper-up potion and a cheerfulness potion, they are clearly marked.”
The little elf quickly popped back out and then back into the room, with a potion in each hand.
Taking the potions from the elf, Sirius administered them via a spell since Harry wasn’t responsive enough to drink them.
A few moments later, Hadrian moved to grab his pillow where it had been pushed up to the top of his bed, he pulled it to himself and wrapped his arms around it, pressing his face into its softness.
“Harry, what happened?” Sirius asked again, running a hand through Harry’s hair, coaxing Harry to relax and talk.
“I had a Wraith.” Harry whispered, moving his face out of the pillow to answer.
Sirius was at a loss, he looked down at his godson in confusion. “Why are you so sad, then? I thought Wraiths made you happy.”
“They normally do.” Harry answered his voice still barely above a whisper, as if it was hard for him to talk. “But, this time was different. Waking up and leaving him was like having my soul torn out.”
Sirius didn’t know what to do, while the potions helped for a short while, they would wear off and Harry would drop back into the deep depression Sirius found him in. It could kill him, having his magic fade like it was when Sirius did those diagnostic charms a short while ago.
“I will be right back, Pup,” Sirius told Hadrian, getting an idea. He quickly left the room after telling Pip to notify him if anything changed with Harry.
His office was small, since he only used it to write correspondence and to do some paperwork.
Sirius’ dark desk, sat in front of a large bay window, it was covered in stacks of messily organized papers, letters and file folders. To the left of the desk bookshelves lined the wall, with two overstuffed chairs for relaxing and reading. To the right of the desk there was an ornate mirror, it was as tall as Sirius, with multicolored gems adorning its golden frame. Two cabinets sat along the wall as well, one was still open, rows upon rows of varies potions could be seen before Sirius shut the door that Pip had left open in her hurry.
Sirius went to one of the bookshelves and pulled a small wooden box off of it, walking over to his desk; he sat down and began to rummage through the many papers in the box.
Finding the paper he was looking for, Sirius went to the mirror and using his right pointer finger he copied the runes from the page in his hand onto the top portion of the mirrors glass. When that was complete, he spoke the incantation that was also on the page.
The mirror glowed for a moment, the runes Sirius wrote turning white before fading away.
A few moments later, the surface of the glass shimmered and a different room appeared in the glass, with a beautiful woman sitting in a chair.
“Greetings, I am Veda, please state your name,” the woman flicked part of her long red hair behind her, poising a quill over one of the many papers she held in her hands.
“I am Lord Sirius Black.”
Veda nodded before quickly writing his name down, when the page glowed a strange yellow color, she looked up at Sirius.
“You are not in the Viperidae registry, are you contacting us to register?” she inquired, her honey brown eyes examining Sirius.
“No, I am not a Viperidae,” Sirius answered, “but, my...”
“If you are not Viperidae, then how did you get the address to this mirror, Lord Black?” Veda seemed very annoyed and she signaled someone off to the side of the room.
“My godson is a Viperidae, Ms. Veda!” Sirius quickly injected, not wanting to be forced off the mirror call. “He is seventeen and just had his inheritance. He will be in your files, his parents Revealed his creature when he was born, the Viperidae nation would have been informed immediately.”
“Alright, why have you called? Why not the young man himself or one of his parents?”
“I am his guardian, his parents died when he was one.” Sirius replied, pausing to swallow deeply, it was still hard to say, even sixteen years later. “Hadrian James Potter, is his name, he is very ill. However, I can’t figure out what is wrong. I invent medical potions and I am a licensed Healer, none of my scans show any disease or why this sickness has come on so suddenly.”
“And you think it may be tied to his Viperidae side?” Veda concluded jotting down the information Sirius gave her, this time the paper glowed blue. “According to my records, he had his inheritance two days ago. Has he been able to tell if he is a Dominant or Submissive?”
“Harry has known since he was six that he was a Sub,” Sirius answered, getting impatient, but still trying to be polite.
“It is not possible for Mr. Potter to have known he was a Sub that young,” Veda retorted, shifting her seat, pulling the sleeves of her long, purple robe up to reveal brilliant red scales along her forearms.
“He has Mating Wraiths, I don’t know when they first started, but he first told me about them when he was six.”
“Mating Wraiths,” Veda gasped, her eyes going wide. “I haven’t heard of any Viperidae having those in last three generations.”
“And, I think they’re the problem. Harry just had his inheritance, his Viper is now fully manifested and all it needs is its mate.” Sirius began to pace a little, right in front of the mirror, so Veda could still see him; he needed to release some of his nervous energy. “He had a Wraith last night, but this morning when I found him in his room he wasn’t responsive. His heart rate was low and his magic had badly faded, he was showing signs of deep depression. I was able to give him a pepper-up and a cheerfulness potion; he was barely responsive after that. All he said was that he had a Wraith and leaving his mate was like having his soul torn out.”
“Do we have your mirror runes to return a call?” She asked, setting her papers aside and standing.
“Yes, do you know what is happening to him; is there a way to help? With his magic this low, I could lose him!” Desperation seeped into Sirius’ voice as he demanded answers.
“The counsel is currently meeting, I have never heard of this, but if anyone would know what is going on with your godson, it would be one of them.” Veda responded softly. “Use potions to keep him as stable as possible for now and I will call you as soon as I know something.”
With a despondent sigh, Sirius hung his head, staring blindly at the toes of his shoes. His pup was hurting, and he couldn’t do anything about it.
“Lord Black,” Veda paused until Sirius’ haunted grey eyes looked up at her. “We Viperidae would do anything to protect our own. Your godson, as all Submissives are, is treasured among us. We will help him however we can.”
Not trusting his voice, Sirius nodded and Veda ended the call.
Taking a deep breath, Sirius pulled himself together, his godson needed him. Walking over to the potions cabinet, he pulled out what he needed before making his way back to Harry’s room.
