Chapter 2: Awake and Asleep
The darkness around her started to change. It started to shift form complete nothingness to a blackness that housed sounds. She thought she heard a voice, urging her to wake up. Another shift and she could feel pressure, she could feel hands on her shoulders. Her mind started to reel from the contact as pieces started to float back to her mind about what had happened before she blacked out. Hands. Hands had been all over her, hurting her, trying to force her to do things she didn't want to. Trying to move away from the hands she groaned as pain enveloped her again. Fighting through it she tried to open her eyes. If she could see where the person was she could get away, she could fight again, she wouldn't let them continue hurting her. She only hoped that nothing had happened while she had been blacked out. She didn't feel any new injuries but the one snatcher had said even unconsciousness wouldn't stop them. Suddenly the pressure left her shoulders. They'd let her go? Why? What were they going to do now? With a renewed sense of panic she tried to open her eyes again. Darkness gave way to slightly lighter darkness, a darkness that held shadows of trees and twinkles from stars. It was still night then, she couldn't have been knocked out for long. She blinked as things started to come into focus. A face swam into view near her. Forcing herself to focus on that she desperately hoped it wasn't one of the men she'd been trying to escape. She looked up into a pair of dark eyes, watching her curiously. Her fear receded slightly when she didn't recognize him. Looking around she realized she was in a clearing. Her apprehension started to grow again, she hadn't been in a clearing before. What had happened? Why was she in a different location? Had the snatchers had their fun and tossed her away? Had someone come along and stopped them?
Scabior shifted his weight as he watched her take in her surroundings. Sensing his movement she flinched way automatically, causing her to cry out quietly in pain. She tried to sit up and he reached forwards to help steady her. Her head snapped around as his hand closed around her upper arm, her body stiffened briefly before she started trying to pull away. The sudden movement caused pain to radiate through her head and down her back, reaching all the way to her toes. Her vision swam again though she still tried to scrabble backwards away from him.
Seeing that every move she made was causing her extreme pain Scabior grabbed one of her ankles as she slid backwards, “Stop movin', luv, you'll only make it hurt worse.”
Her eyes, full of fear, pierced his and she kicked her free foot at the hand holding her ankle, “Let me go!”
Hissing as she made contact with his fingers he grabbed her other foot too, “I'm not lettin' you go so you can continue to kick at me.”
Finding both her ankles firmly restrained she resorted to using her hands. Trying to find a spot to hit that would make him let go. “Let Go!” she yelled as she swung at him.
Narrowly avoiding being punched in the nose Scabior momentarily forgot that getting her to stop moving was to lessen her pain. Growling under his breath he pulled her ankles towards him, ignoring her scream of pain as her back scraped along the root covered ground. Climbing on top of her legs to pin them down he attempted to grab her flailing arms to avoid getting hurt himself. Catching hold of her fists he pushed them to the ground either side of her head, finally suspending her efforts to inflict pain.
“GET OFF ME!” she screamed as she felt his weight settle firmly on top of her, his legs preventing hers from moving and his hands on her fists not budging an inch as she continued to struggle despite the amount of pain she was feeling.
Noting that she was firmly pinned beneath him and unable to escape Scabior took a moment to assess the position he suddenly found himself in and chuckled darkly, “I can think of much nicer things to do in this position. Here I am tryin' to save you an' I end up having to protect myself from you.”
Hearing that, she froze, looking up at him. “Tr-trying to save me?”
“In case you 'aven't noticed, luv, you're a might beat up. I've been tryin' to get through that bloody barrier you had up so I could do somethin' about that.”
“In case I haven't noticed?! You think I didn't notice when I was being attacked? Then I wake up and find you with your hands all over me, what the hell was I supposed to think?” she spit out before her brain had analyzed everything he had just said. “W-wait, barrier? What barrier?”
Shaking his head at her outburst Scabior relaxed a little. Even though she was still spitting venom she no longer seemed to want to cause him bodily harm. “If I let go of your hands are you gonna try an' hit me again?”
“Are you going to get off of me too?”
“Only if you promise not to attack me again,” he replied, adding as an afterthought, “and you agree to answer my questions.”
Heaving a sigh she said, “Fine. But you have to answer my questions too.”
“Deal.”
Scabior slowly let go of her hands and leaned back, half expecting her to take a swing at him again. When she didn't, he shifted to one knee and twisted his body to the side and off of her a bit reluctantly. Not only was he still a bit worried she might change her mind and strike out at him again, but sitting as he had been straddling her he had come to the realization that she had a deliciously curved body. Sitting on the ground beside her he waited for her to sit up, watching her blink a few times as she did. She must still be dizzy, he thought. He decided to keep the first round of questions brief so he could get her back to camp and Thom's healing skills.
As she sat up a wave of nausea hit her and she suddenly felt too warm, even in the cool night air. Looking over at the man sitting beside her she realized he must be waiting for her to ask the first question. Sitting upright was proving harder than she thought it would be as spots started to flash before her eyes. Blinking a few times she started to speak, “Y-you said something about a... about a barrier?”
Scabior nodded, “You had this glowing shadow around you that wouldn't let any of my men touch you. Knocked one of them clear across the clearing when he tried.”
“How did you get through it?”
“Nope, it's my turn.” he said, shaking his head. “Who are you?”
Giving a slight start at his question she searched her brain. Who was she? She could remember what those men had done to her and what they'd tried to do to her. But she couldn't remember why they'd done it. She couldn't remember why she'd been in that forest. She couldn't remember anything before running through those trees. Well, she had one thing, her name, she remembered her name, but that was it. Why couldn't she remember anything?
Scabior raised an eyebrow as she searched for an answer to his question. He could almost hear her brain thinking. Emotions fleeted across her face, first surprise, then confusion, followed by anger which slowly turned into fear.
“Is it really that hard of a question, luv?”
Glancing up she searched his face, hoping to find any sort of answer to the questions now pelting around her own brain. “I can't remember...” she whispered.
He cocked his head to the side, trying not to let his surprise show, “You can't remember who you are?”
She shook her head slowly and spoke in a hushed voice, “I can remember my name... and what happened right before I was... before I was knocked out. But I-I can't remember anything else.”
“Okay, let's start with the easy one then. What's your name?” Scabior asked, noting how pale she had suddenly become.
“L-Lexington,” she breathed, “My name is Lexington.”
Suddenly everything became too much. She didn't know where she was. She didn't know who she was with. She didn't even know who she was. Taking a large breath to try and steady her mind she reeled at the pain that flooded her body, sending another wave of nausea washing over her. As the spots before her eyes returned she shook her head to clear her vision, which was a mistake because the sudden movement caused her head to explode with pain. The spots turned into star-bursts and every shuddering breath she took made more pain radiate through her body.
Scabior watched as her breathing grew rapid and her body started to sway. Realizing what was about to happen he lurched forward, coming to his knees, just as she started to topple sideways he caught her shoulders to prevent her head hitting the ground. The last thing she needed was another head injury. Bringing a hand to her check, he was about to tap her face lightly to see if that would bring her back to consciousness he realized that she was still quite warm.
“Well, Lexington, I think it's time we got you patched up, eh?” Keeping one arm around her shoulders he scooped the other under her legs and lifted her up gently. With her body snug against his chest and her head nestled on his shoulder, Scabior once again noticed how good her body felt against his. Now that he had her in his arms he could feel that she was toned, but still had a girlish softness to her, and he groaned. The months he spent in the woods with his crew meant that seeking the company of a woman didn't happen very often. He couldn't remember the last time he'd had that opportunity. But now he had the form of a girl pressing against him, a girl who was really more woman than girl, a girl who's body he could feel rubbing against his chest with every step. This was going to be a long walk back to camp.
