Hello every body I'm back with the next chapter. This one will be a little longer then the last two so I hope you like it. Also I will try to keep my updates to once a week, usually on the weekend, but as I catch up to what I have written the updates may take a little longer. Also thanks to those that reviewed and sorry for the Vale/Veil mix up.
Chapter 3The sun was just coming up over the roof tops when the Bus slammed to a stop in front of the Leaky Cauldron and Harry, a bit dazed, stumbled his way off it and into the pub. The trip had been rough and Harry was slightly battered but all in all it was a normal ride on the Knight Bus. As the door closed behind him Harry took a moment to steady himself and look around the nearly empty room. The only patrons were a couple of old wizards off in the corner who didn't even glance up when he entered. The only other person in the room was the Inn Keeper Tom behind the bar.Harry glanced at the clock on the wall and realized that he had a little while before Gringotts opened so he decided that with the extra money he could afford a little breakfast. Harry made his way over to the bar and asked Tom for the breakfast special. Tom smiled and nodded before heading to the kitchen. As Harry waited he spent the time wondering what changes he would under go and how the people who knew him would react to the change. Some of the more ridiculous images that came to mind had him snorting to himself. Before he could completely burst out laughing Tom was back with his breakfast and a glance at the clock had him quickly digging into the large plate of food.
Harry took his last bite of food before standing and paying Tom. Harry then made his way out to the back alley and then, after checking the coast was clear, into Diagon Alley with a quick tap of his wand. Once on the other side Harry stopped and took a deep breath and just let the feel of being back in the wizarding world wash over him. While it had only been a few months it had been too long since he had been part of this world. He felt like he had been traveling out of country and had finally come home to his own. Sighing Harry shook his head and reminded himself why he was here before moving on. The street was quite with only a few shop keepers moving around getting their shops ready for the day as Harry made his way up the street to the big marble building that was the goblin bank.
The bank doors had just opened when Harry climbed the steps and passed through the entryway into the main room of the bank. Even as early as he was there were still a few witches and wizards that had got in before him but there were still a couple unoccupied goblins. Approaching a more isolated goblin to cut down on eavesdroppers Harry stood tall and waited to be acknowledged.
“Yes, can I help you?” The goblin's voice was high pitched and nasally. His eyes held a glint that suggested that he would have said something much more impolite if it wouldn't have been bad for business. Though the look on his face said he clearly thought the boy in front of him not worth the effort.
“Yes. You see I'm Harry Potter and I'm here to claim my legacies.” Harry tried to keep his nerves from showing as the goblin's eye's widened took a closer look at him.
“Very well Mr. Potter if you would follow me I will lead you to the Legacies Department.” So saying the Goblin jumped off of his step stool and headed quickly toward a door in the back of the chamber. Harry hurried to catch up with him as he passed through the door and down the hallway. The hallways' walls were covered in tapestries of the goblin wars. The scenes were filled with the death and suffering of the wizards who opposed the goblin forces.
As they continue down the hall they pass multiple doors, each made of a valuable material and covered with detailed and amazing art. Harry did his best to get a closer look at some of the doors but was ordered to keep up by his goblin guide. Soon they reached the last door on the hall, a plain oak wood door with a simple design of a large deer or elk with an overly large rack of antlers that dangled vines. As Harry was studying the image the creature lifted his head and glazed back at him which led to a staring contest. Unfortunately the contest was cut short when the door was pushed open and Harry was motioned through into the office beyond. The office was a good size and housed four goblins and their desks as well as cabinets that lined the walls and held all sorts of ores and gemstones. Glancing up Harry noticed that the ceiling was covered in carvings depicting creatures of all sorts gallivanting around in a carefree manner and the images should have been happy, but there was a darker feeling to the art. Harry took a closer look and studied the moving figures, but was unable to see what it was that made him think that there was a controlled violence beneath the play of the creatures depicted.
“I see that you have noticed our beautiful ceiling. It depicts the Wild Hunt of old. Back when magic wasn't the docile, manageable thing human wizards know today, but was instead a force to be reckoned with.” Harry jumped and turned his attention back to the rest of the room and noticed that the goblin that had lead him to the office had left. The goblin who had spoken to him was slightly shorter then the first and his features were much pointier as well. The goblin smiled, showing all his sharp and crooked teeth. “Now is there something you needed with the department of Legacies?”
Harry smiled and nodded respectfully. “Yes. You see I am Harry Potter and I have come to claim my Legacies.” Harry paused and thought a moment before adding, “I would also like to claim all that is mine.”
The goblin nodded to each request before motioning the young wizard over to his desk and taking his seat behind it. Harry sat in the chair that he was motioned to and waited for the goblin to speak. The goblin took a moment to pull a few things out of his desk and situate them on the top before turning back to Harry.
“Now Mr. Potter my name is Nagnok and I am the department head for this office.” Nagnok pauses to let Harry nod before continuing. “You have requested to claim your legacies and any inheritances you might have coming to you. The inheritances are easy, we will preform a brief ritual to prove that you are who you say you are and then list to you all you own. This will also tell us if you even have a Legacy to unlock, to keep us from wasting time and resources on a very detailed ritual that would be pointless if you don't have one. Now will you be wanting both rituals today?”
“Yes, sir. Today's my sixteenth birthday and I am told it has to be done today.”
“Left it a little late didn't you?” Nagnoks' voice held disapproval.
“Yes, sir. It's just that I only learned about it yesterday. This was the soonest I could get in, I'm sorry if it causes you problems.” Harry rubbed his hands on his thighs in an attempt to calm his rising nerves. This is where things could start to fall apart, if they couldn't do the ritual today the chance would be gone.
“I see.” Nagnok looked down to rearrange the items on his desk. “Well you are in luck as, since you got here so promptly this morning and we have no other Legacy rituals planned today, we can fit both rituals in today.”
Harry let out a sigh of relief. “Thank you so much Nagnok.”
Nagnok gave a dark, gruff laugh. “Don't thank me yet. The rituals are quite expensive due to needing some rarer items. But if you really are Harry Potter I don't think you have much to worry about, the Potters have always been wealthy.”
Harry blinked and asked, “So the Potters were an old pure blood family then?”
Nagnoks' eyes narrowed. “You didn't know that? The Potter family was the seventh family to open a family vault with us. Their wealth is not only in gold and silver, but artifacts that span hundreds of years of wizarding history.”
Harry closed his eyes and frowned. “Until yesterday I had only been told vague information about my parents school years and how they had died. To be truthful I know very little about my ancestors and the history of my family. In fact I hope that I might inherit something that will give me some insight into who they were and what they were like.”
Harry reopened his eyes as Nagnok spoke. “Well lets get the smaller inheritance ritual out of the way, then if you are indeed Harry Potter and do indeed have a Legacy to unlock we will set up the larger ritual. The set up will take around a hour, and then the ritual can take a hour to two hours to complete. After that I would suggest going over any accounts you may inherit with the goblin in charge of them. Now the smaller ritual is really sort of simple, all you have to do is take this knife and use it to slice your palm then catch the blood in this vial. The vial will be turned over to a specialized goblin who will read the blood.”
As the goblin spoke he held up a bone white knife with a blood red ruby in its hilt and then a medium sized crystal vial. When he got done speaking he held the knife out handle first to Harry who took it nervously. Harry eyed the blade before placing it across his hand and closing his fingers around it. He gritted his teeth and pulled the knife out of his fist.
The blood started flowing instantly and he had to quickly grab the vial and catch the liquid inside. When the vial was full Harry handed it to Nagnok and looked down to watch the cut close on its own. Nagnok had cleaned the blade and put it away leaving only the vial on the desk.
“Now Harry we need to move to one of the ritual rooms where your blood would be read. Please follow me.” Nagnok got up and led Harry out a second door on the opposite wall. The hall way that they walked down was less polished, more raw and primitive then the first one. They passed two archways before entering the third cavern.
The cavern was lit with torches set at intervals along the wall and their glow revealed a chamber with a level, polished floor that had multiple runes and symbols carved into it. The walls were rough and unfinished with the left hand wall having a balcony like outcropping. There was a air of power and anticipation that hung around the cavern as Harry was lead to a circle carved into the floor and situated in front of the outcropping. Nagnok motioned for Harry to stay where he was and walked up a rough ramp that led to the outcrop and then disappeared from sight.
Harry fidgeted where he stood as he felt the magic in the room rise and the circle he stood in began to glow. There was a noise up on the balcony and Harry turned his attention from the circle and up to the goblins that had come to stand at the tip of the outcrop and look down at him. One was Nagnok, but the other was new to Harry. This goblin was ancient, all wrinkles and droopy ears. He also appeared to be blind, his eyes were milky white and unmoving.
“Hear now the Reading of the Blood spoken unto you by Bloodseer the oldest of the Shaman belonging to the Bone Breaker clan. He has not been called to do a blood reading in over a hundred years.” Nagnok looked pointedly at Harry before turning to his companion. “The one who has come to be read is ready to hear your words. Look into the blood and tell us what it has to say.”
The older goblin held up the vial of Harry's blood and turned his unseeing eyes to focus on it. As he peered into the ruby liquid it began to glow and pulse. Harry gasped when he realized that it was pulsing in tune with his heart, as if it was still part of him. Nagnok glanced at Harry and motioned him to remain silent and Harry nodded as Bloodseer began to speak.
“Harry James Potter, son of James Potter and Lily of the Fire, also known as Lily Evens, sixteen years of age today. Blood status is Pure with duel heritage of Wizard and Fae.” The voice that came from the ancient shaman was strong and powerful, it seemed to wrap around Harry so that there was no way he could miss a word spoken. “From his father, James Potter, Harry Potter has inherited the tile of Lord Potter and all the power, positions, and responsibilities that come with it. From his father, James Potter, Harry Potter also has inherited all the Potter family and personal vaults, properties, and worldly possessions. From his mother, Lily of the Fire, Harry Potter has been gifted with the Fae Legacy to be bound until his sixteenth birthday when he will make the Choice. From his mother, Lily of the Fire, Harry Potter has inherited her personal vaults, properties including her ancestral home, and all her worldly possessions. From his godfather, Sirius Black, Harry Potter has inherited the title of Lord Black and all the power, positions, and responsibilities that come with it. From his godfather, Sirius Black, Harry Potter also inherited all the Black family vaults, his personal vaults, properties, and worldly possessions. Harry Potter savior of the wizarding world, shining hope for those that are forgotten, these are your inheritances written in blood and read from blood. What have you to say to what has been spoken?”
Before Harry could decide what to say his mouth opened and seem to reply on its own. “I have heard what has been said and give thanks to the Reader Bloodseer. I claim all that is mine, for it was left to me by blood and bond, as it has been spoken so let it be.”
The Shaman nodded and spoke again. “Harry James Potter, son of James Potter and Lily of the Fire, you have accepted all that has been left to you by those that are gone. From this moment on you are Lord Harry James Potter–Black. Go forth and prepare for the Ritual of Legacies.”
Bloodseer lowered the vial before opening it and pouring out the contents on the stone outcrop. Then without another word he turned and left back the way he had come. The light of the circle faded and left Harry standing there trying to wrap his mind around what had been told to him. He was a lord? Not only to one house, but two? Why hadn't anyone told him that his father had been a lord? Or that his family was a pure blood family?
Harry's mind was working back through all the information that had been told to him, and all the information that he had managed to gather himself. He considered the people who were involved and their views on things like pure bloods and old families. He came to some conclusions that left his temper simmering under the surface and left him with only a few questions that needed to be answered before he decided whether to leash it or to let it rage full out at the people who had been misleading him from his first step into the wizarding world.
As Harry had been lost in thought Nagnok had left the outcrop and made his way back to Harry. He had stood silently until he could see that the boy had returned from his inner reflections before he spoke. “My Lord it would be a little while before the other ritual is ready, would you like to take a look in your vaults while you wait?”
Harry nodded. “I think that would be a good idea. Do you think you could answer a couple of questions for me while we do? I think quite a lot has been kept from me and I am tired of being lied to by the people I trust. I have to get a good handle on whats going on so that I can figure out who was involved in trying to hide my ancestry from me.”
Nagnok raised an eyebrow and nodded. “I don't know everything, of course, but if I have the answers then I will do my best to give them to you. My Lord, if I may be so bold to ask, did you really not know about your lordship? Or your other inheritances?”
Harry shook his head slowly. “All I was told about was my school vault. I knew nothing of anything else. Bloody hell, I didn't even know that Sirius' Will had been read or that I was to inherit anything from him.”
“Sirius Blacks' Will was not read, I believe that your Guardian asked for it to be sealed until your seventeenth birthday as you were to upset to set through the reading. You only heard what you received from him because of the type of ritual that was performed. Any lesser ritual and it wouldn't have been mentioned.”
“What do you mean my guardian asked? If my muggle aunt and uncle had known I had a pound to my name they would have done anything to get their hands on it, not ask you to hold off for a year.”
“Your muggle aunt and uncle, my Lord? I don't understand. Your guardian is a wizard, one Albus Dumbledore. The wizarding world would never leave a baby lord in the hands of muggles.” Nagnok sounded angry. “Are you telling me that you were raise in a muggle house hold? How often did Dumbledore check up on you? When were you introduced to the magical world?”
Harry's eyes hardened and he growled out, “He never checked up on me. I didn't even know that he was my guardian. I was left on my aunt and uncle's door step on the night that my parents died and did not learn that I was a wizard until I got my letter from Hogwarts. I found out later that my aunt and uncle knew about my magic and had decided to stamp the magic out of me. Needless to say my childhood was not a happy or fun one.” Harry paused, thought a moment, then continued. “Nagnok, what sort of power would Dumbledore have as my guardian?”
Nagnok, not liking where this was going, answered in a gruff voice. “He would have access to a single vault so that he could afford to feed, house, and clothe you. He would be your voice in public and sit on your seat in the Wizengamot.”
Thinking quickly Harry asked, “Is Dumbledore an old pure blood family?”
“No. They are a smaller off shoot of a larger family.”
“So without my seat Dumbledore wouldn't have a seat in the Wizengamot, would he?” Harry asked softly.
“Most likely not my Lord.” Nagnok paused a moment. “He may have also held the Black seat as there was no lord while Sirius was imprisoned. But now he holds neither as you have claimed them. I would wager that he will not be pleased when he finds out, my Lord.”
“It's Harry, Nagnok, and no I don't think he will be. But I also don't give a damn.”
While they had been talking Nagnok had led Harry back to his office and through it back out into the first hallway. They went back up pass three doors and crossed the hall to a large ebony door depicting the night skies and the constellations marked out in diamonds. Nagnok came to a halt and gestured to the door.
“This is the office of the goblin in charge of the Black accounts.” Nagnok continued down the hallway a few doors to a door made of gold featuring a dragon standing guard over a nest of eggs. “While this is the office of the Potter account manager. Which would you like to view first?”
“Actually, I would like to view the vaults left to me by my mother first. But if you could ask the managers of the Potter and Black accounts to have an overview of those accounts ready for when I'm done with my mothers I would appreciate it. Have them focus on who has access to them and who has visited them in the past 20 years as well as everything else.” Harry paused for a moment. “If that's okay, that is.”
Nagnok snorted, before grumbling, “Dismisses two of the riches vaults for the one his mother left him, a one of a kind wizard indeed.” Continuing in a louder voice the goblin gave an affirmative answer before poking his head in each door to convey the new Lord's orders. Each of the managers had already heard that they had a new Lord and agreed to have the summaries ready when requested. Nagnok returned to the young Lord who had again wondered off to admire the doors.
“If you will follow me we will have to make our way to the mine carts, but there is an entrance closer then the one in the main room.” So saying Nagnok lead him down a side hallway and around a couple of turns before they came to the carts. Following Nagnok into the cart Harry settled in for the ride.
“The vault your mother left you is actually a family vault that was passed down to her from her own mother, though it is very unlikely anything of her mother's remains within it due to the fact that most Fae do not need or want a lot of possessions. It is one of the first vaults built when this bank was founded, in fact all the first vaults belonged to Fae or other nonhuman beings as wizards had yet to come to trust us with guarding their wealth. Unfortunately many of those lines have died out or have become repressed in another bloodline and forgotten.” Nagnok frowned. “Anyway these vaults aren't numbered, they are known by the image on the door. Your mother's vault is the Lily vault. Lily was a common name used in the family to help them remember their history. As it is we are in for quite a long ride as the vault is on the second to lowest level. The only level lower is the one used for major rituals, which you will see later. Lets go.”
With that the cart started forward a short distance before shooting almost strait down into darkness. The darkness lasted for a few minutes before they entered a lighted area and Harry was able to watch as doors rushed past fast enough for him to wish that the darkness would return so that he wouldn't have to know how fast they were going. While Harry didn't have a watch he was sure that the trip took at least half an hour before they reached a sturdy stone door decorated with a carved crystal lily that caught the light and rippled with a multitude of colors. Nagnok exited the cart closely fallowed by Harry who was more then ready to be on solid ground.
“All you have to do to gain entrance is to place your hand on the smooth rectangle on the door.” Nagnok pointed out the spot and Harry eagerly spread his hand over the area. It took a moment but then the door slid silently back a few inches before retreating into the wall. Stepping inside Harry received his first look at the Lily vault.
