Friday morning came far too quickly for Hermione. It was as if the week had passed by in the blink of an eye and now doomsday was upon her. Her thoughts ran rampant as she showered and dressed for another day of classes. She hadn't slept well all week and as she stood in front of the mirror, she could see the signs of stress etched upon her features. Dark circles appeared under her bloodshot eyes, her face looked haggard and lined with exhaustion. She sighed, shaking her head and headed down to the infirmary for the second time that week.
"Back again, Miss Granger?" Madame Pompfrey asked curiously when she saw Hermione walk through the double doors of the hospital wing.
"Yes, ma'am. I'm in need of a Pepper-Up potion. Up late studying and all, you know." She forced a small smile.
"Of course, dear. I'll go and fetch it for you, but I still think you're pushing yourself too hard. You should give yourself time to rest, have fun, enjoy some time off from studying. I have it on good authority that you're well ahead in all your classes, so take a little break, dear." The mediwitch walked back to her inventory and grabbed the vial of Pepper-Up potion and brought it to her. Herione quickly downed the pinkish liquid and handed the empty vial back to Madame Pompfrey. Hermione knew the woman meant well, but she had no idea of the true nature of her problems. No one did. Well, with the exception of Professors Snape and Dumbledore. Oh, and can’t forget Malfoy, apparently he knew as well. How she was going to deal with that one, she hadn't a clue. But, Hermione didn't have the time to worry about him right now. She had to get to class.

"Hermione, are you alright?" The soft cadence of Luna's voice caused Hermione to glance up from her lone spot at the Gryffindor table during lunch where she was once again pushing her food around on her plate. "You seem a little melancholy lately."
"I'm fine, Luna. Thank you." She replied quietly, as the small girl sat down beside her. It was uncanny how Luna could always tell when something was amiss and yet she was thankful for the company she offered. Hermione glanced over to where Ginny was sitting between Harry and Ron, talking furiously to each of them and she could only wonder what the spitfire Weasley was saying. She watched as Ginny rose with her plate, saying something to each boy before making her way over to where Hermione and Luna sat.
"I swear, sometimes I'd like to hex those two into oblivion. I don't know what's gotten into them, but they're both being right arseholes." Ginny huffed as she plopped down onto the open seat next to Hermione. "Ron's just following along with Harry, but Harry.....it's like he's turning more and more into Voldemort every day. Especially with all his talk about Muggleborns and blood traitors. The slimy git." If it had been any other day, Hermione might have laughed at Ginny's griping about her two best friends, but her comments hit too close to home for that today. Leaning close to Ginny, she spoke just quietly enough for her alone to hear.
"I think that's the problem, Gin. What you said about him turning into Voldemort. Harry has a piece of Voldemort inside him and I think somehow he's controlling Harry with it." Ginny's eyes went wide with surprise at her suggestion but that seemed to be the only thing that made sense right now. "I have to believe that's what it is, Gin. Because I don't think I could bear the alternative." Her voice cracked at the end, betraying the hurt she still felt at the abandonment of her best friends. "I think I'm gonna go to the library. I'll catch up with you later, Gin.” Hermione stood slowly, her expression glum as she gathered her things and headed out of the Great Hall.
Malfoy found her a couple of hours later, sitting in a chair in the restricted section, reading another book on mind links and its effects. "Tonight's the night, Granger. You ready?" His taunting drawl as he sat casually in the empty chair across from her had her glancing up and scowling daggers his way. He held his hands up in a sign of surrender, attempting to reassure the clearly frazzled girl that he was not there to harm her. "I'm just here to make sure you're not going to embarrass myself and my godfather at the meeting tonight. What the Dark Lord would want with a filthy Mudblood like you, I haven't a clue, but I hear he's most anxious to meet you.” Malfoy’s expression was sly and his voice full of mock-curiosity, clearly trying to goad her, waiting for a reaction. He’d never admit the smidgen of apprehension he felt waiting for her to react; but all he was rewarded with was a death glare from Hermione. It angered him that he couldn't get a reaction out of the girl. He'd always gotten a rise out of her - for years. Granger always had some witty comeback and loath as he was to admit it, he rather enjoyed their verbal sparring. Something had her rattled and off her game. He'd never seen her like this. So he decided to up the ante. "Or perhaps the Dark Lord simply wants to kill your parents and make you watch before killing you. Wouldn't that be marvelous?” Hermione's head snapped back up, her expression both pained and livid, a bright fire roared to life in her eyes at his malicious comment. Now there's the Granger I know.
Hermione shot up from her chair, wand in hand and pressed underneath his chin in an instant. Her whole body vibrated with the need to curse him into oblivion, a darkness that she'd never known settling into her very soul, and she knew in that moment that she could have used an Unforgivable with ease. What bothered her more, and what stopped her from doing so, was the realization that she wanted to. Hermione wanted to Crucio Draco in that moment for speaking about her parents like that, wanted to make him hurt like she was hurt. Instead, she lowered her wand and punched him square in the nose, for the second time during her years at Hogwarts. She watched as blood spurt everywhere upon contact and felt as well as heard the crack of his nose breaking. His head rocked back as he made a grab for his nose and cursed. "That's for my parents, you miserable little ferret." She grabbed her things and made to leave but paused, turning back to Malfoy, who was still holding his nose and trying to stop the bleeding. And she did something unexpected. She laughed. Genuinely laughed, for the first time in days. Hermione shook her head and pulled her wand. "Oh here, you spineless wanker." She said, still smirking as she walked back over to him and aimed her wand at his nose. "Episkey!" She cast the spell perfectly and heard the crack of the bone resetting and healing itself.
"Why'd you do that?" Malfoy asked, bewildered at the fact that she'd heal him after accosting him like she did. He knew he wouldn't have done the same for her.
"So you can't go running to Madame Pompfrey and say I physically attacked you, of course. Honestly, Malfoy, I would expect you to at least be cunning enough to sort that one out on your own." And with that, she turned and left the library, leaving a stunned Draco behind.

Back in her dormitory, Hermione stood glaring at her wardrobe, trying to figure out what one would wear when meeting a madman who held their parents hostage. She'd never before fussed over her attire but it seemed that her school uniform would be highly innappropriate. Especially considering the Gryffindor crest that adorned her vest and robes. No, that would not do at all. Selecting a pair of jeans and a plain black babydoll shirt, she tossed them on the bed. She didn't see the need to dress up, so everyday casual clothes would have to do. Glancing at the clock as she dressed, she noticed that she had only a half hour before she had to meet Snape at his office. She quickly applied a liberal amount of Sleakeazy's Hair Potion on her hair to help make it a bit more manageable, grabbed her cloak and headed out to meet her doom.
"Ah, so you are capable of being early for something." Professor Snape drawled in that uninterested tone he seemed to use for everything. "Come in, Miss Granger. We were just going over some basics." Her brows furrowed. We? Who's we? She glanced around the room and groaned audibly when she saw Malfoy sitting at one of the desks, close to the front of the room. She'd been so focused on the professor when she walked in that she hadn't even noticed him. She wanted to ask why he was there, but then, of course he'd be going with them. His father was a Death Eater and if the rumors were true, so was he. Bloody hell. She'd been so emersed in her own thoughts that she hadn't even noticed that Professor Snape had left the room until he came back carrying a solid black cloak. The same cloak that the Death Eaters wore. Just the sight of it sent a shiver up her spine. "Put this on. You may leave your school robes in my office until our return." He said simply, handing her the cloak. Hermione eyed it warily before placing it on one of the desks to change into.
"What's the matter, Granger? Nervous? You should be honored to wear that cloak. The first Mudblood to wear a Death Eater cloak. You're making history." Malfoy taunted while lounging back in his chair, placing his feet up on the desk.
"Would you like another broken nose, Draco? Or perhaps an actual curse this time? I'd be happy to oblige you." Hermione sneered before they both started at Snape's shout.
"ENOUGH! I will not have this nonsense in my classroom or my presence. Draco, stop taunting the girl. And get your feet off my desk! And Miss Granger, did you just threaten another student? I can assure you, curses are nothing to play around with and should you threaten anyone again in my presence, I will personally make sure you are on the first train back to London. Do you understand?" He eyed her expectantly until she nodded her head meekly. "Now both of you stop this nonsense," he glanced at Draco then back to Hermione. "And you, change into that robe so we can get going."
Hermione quickly stripped off her school robes, revealing her casual attire and a nearly inaudible gasp escaped Draco at her appearance. So the Mudblood actually has a fit body underneath those robes. He thought to his own chagrin. He dismissed the thought quickly as she donned the Death Eater robes, effectively covering the body that he'd just admired a moment ago. Despite her blood status, he had to admit, even if only to himself, that the Dark Lord's robes suited her quite well.
A darkness enveloped her when she put on the solid black robes, the same darkness that she'd felt in the library when she'd wanted to curse Malfoy. It was strange and she turned to the professor with a quizzical look on her face. "Professor, is there a charm on these robes? I feel different...darker...since I put them on." Professor Snape's expression changed from one of disinterest to one of surprise. She'd been right about the charm, but it didn't effect everyone, only those who had the potential for true darkness within them. He hadn't thought this would have been a problem with her, she had always been so aligned with the light that he didn't think the cloak would have an effect on her. Apparently, he was wrong. She was standing there expectantly, patiently waiting for an answer so he decided to go with a half-truth and his usual impatience, hoping it would put her off the question.
"Yes, Miss Granger, there is a charm on the cloak. Now can we go or do you have any more impertinent questions?" He drawled in a bored tone.
"No, Sir." She took a deep breath and exhaled, squaring her shoulders and holding her head up high. This was one challenge she was not going to back down from. "I'm ready."
"Good. Draco, come. It's time to leave." Professor Snape said, not glancing at either of them as he led them out of the castle and into the Forbidden Forrest. They made it a few yards into the forest when Snape stopped and held out his arm to Hermione. "Miss Granger, take my arm and Draco, you take hers. We leave now." Hermione took hold of the professor's arm while Malfoy reluctantly took hold of hers and in an instant they were flying through the air. This way of travel was so much different than flying a broom or even apparition. It was almost as if they were birds flying on the wind and she couldn't help the laugh of exhilaration that escaped her. Glancing over at Professor Snape, she found him eyeing her strangely, as if she'd botched a potion or something. She turned her gaze to Malfoy to see him smirking at her, but before she had the chance to think on both of their expressions, they had landed, rather gracefully at that, in front of a grand manor. Timidly, she stepped forward ahead of the two men, admiring the beautiful architecture.
"Godfather, the wards!" Draco warned Snape quickly but the professor merely stood there, observing.
"I have a theory. I want to see if I am right." He replied, watching intently as Hermione pushed open the gate and stepped through. He watched as she gave a slight shiver as she passed through the wards but they did not throw her back as they should have. "Interesting." He said quietly before turning to Draco. "Come. It would not do to allow her to enter alone."
"Why didn't the wards work on her?" Draco asked as they walked to catch up to her.
"Because apparently, our Miss Granger is closer to the Dark Side than we thought. She felt the wards but they did not repel her as they should have. It seems, The Gryffindor Princess is half Death Eater already."
